BACKGROUND: Low back pain is the leading cause of productivity loss, imposes a significant economic burden on the patients and society. Oxidative stress is considered a critical factor in the complex pathophysiological process and pathogenic mechanism of low back pain. Adjustment dietary pattern can effectively increase antioxidant biomarkers levels within the body to reduce oxidative stress. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) serves a reliable scoring system for quantifying the potential dietary antioxidant capacity of daily diets. OBJECTIVE: We aim to investigate the potential association between CDAI and low back pain, in order to enhance the management of low back pain through dietary guidance. METHODS: This study included 17,682 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000, 2001-2002, 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. The weighted logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between CDAI and low back pain, while restricted cubic spline (RCS) was employed to examine non-linear trend and cutoffs. RESULTS: After adjusting for all confounders, the results showed that there was no significant association between CDAI and low back pain. However, individuals in the highest quartile of CDAI exhibited an 11.7% less likelihood of experiencing a low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.883; 95% CI [0.787,0.991], P = 0.034), and the trend test was also significant (P for trend < 0.001). RCS indicated a linear relationship between CDAI and low back pain (P for non-linear = 0.876). Gender subgroup analysis showed that this negative association was significant in the female population (OR = 0.983; 95% CI [0.968, 0.998], P = 0.027), and females in the highest quartile of CDAI were 19.7% less likely to suffer low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.803; 95% CI [0.682,0.945], P = 0.008). Additionally, the changes in zinc (OR = 1.009; 95% CI [1.002, 1.016], P = 0.015) and selenium (OR = 0.379; 95% CI [0.164, 0.875], P = 0.023) per milligram were independently associated with low back pain. CONCLUSION: The fully adjusted model showed no significant association between CDAI and low back pain, but it was significant in quartiles. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis by gender revealed a negative association between CDAI and low back pain in the female population. Additionally, the findings of this study also suggested that the antioxidant diets should be studied in a dietary pattern context.

Soluble low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (sLRP-1) plays a crucial role in facilitating inflammation, lipid accumulation, and atherosclerosis, and the latter factors are involved in the pathology of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to explore the ability of plasma sLRP-1 for reflecting stenosis degree in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. sLRP-1 was detected from plasma by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 169 ACS patients and 77 non-ACS subjects (as controls) after admission. Our study illustrated that sLRP-1 was increased in ACS patients versus controls (P < 0.001). Meanwhile, sLRP-1 was positively correlated with body mass index (P = 0.021), white blood cells (P = 0.009), neutrophils (P = 0.002), cardiac troponin I (P = 0.009), and brain natriuretic peptide (P = 0.008) in ACS patients. Notably, sLRP-1 was positively associated with the Gensini score (P = 0.002) and Gensini score stratified stenosis severity (P = 0.004) in ACS patients. After adjustment, sLRP-1 [odds ratio (OR) = 1.333, P = 0.045] independently estimated a higher risk of moderate-severe stenosis, so did numbers of coronary artery lesions (OR = 2.869, P = 0.001), but ejection fraction forecasted a lower risk (OR = 0.880, P = 0.012). Interestingly, a combination of sLRP-1, ejection fraction, and numbers of coronary artery lesions exhibited a good ability to estimate moderate-severe stenosis risk with an area under the curve (95% confidence interval) of 0.845 (0.783-0.906). In summary, increased plasma sLRP-1 represents an aggravated inflammation, impaired cardiac function, and especially a higher stenosis severity in ACS patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the level of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a key precursor of heme, and expression of heme-peroxidase on the regulation of heme synthesis in E. coli. METHODS: A transporter gene (eamA) was knocked out, and glutamyl-tRNA reductase gene (hemA) for 5-ALA synthesis and a dye-decolorizing peroxidase gene (DyP) were overexpressed. RESULTS: Knockout of eamA caused decrease of 5-ALA secretion, indicating EamA participates in 5-ALA transportation. Overexpression of hemA elevated intracellular 5-ALA and heme levels. However, overexpression of hemA in eamA knockout mutant led to decrease of intracellular heme content and down-regulation of the transcription of heme synthetic gene hemL by ~ 5.2-fold. When overexpressing both hemA and DyP in the mutant, hemL was up-regulated suggesting the binding of heme to DyP released the feedback repression of hemL. CONCLUSION: HemL expression is heme-mediated and the approach of intracellular immobilization of free heme by overexpression of heme-peroxidase benefits the understanding and application of heme regulation.

Background: The pain and sleep disorders caused by arthritis are health issues that have been re-emphasized with the aging population. However, the majority of research on arthritis and sleep disorders has focused on cases that have already been diagnosed with arthritis. This research aims to explore the correlation between sleep duration and new-onset arthritis in middle-aged and older adult individuals. Methods: Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from baseline (2011) to the Wave 3 follow-up (2018), we conducted a 7-year longitudinal investigation targeting populations with valid sleep questionnaire records and without arthritis. Sleep duration was assessed from nighttime sleep and daytime nap records. The new-onset of arthritis was determined based on self-reported diagnosis. We employed different logistic regression models to consider the potential impact of sleep duration on arthritis and conducted mediation analyses to assess the involvement of BMI in the association between sleep duration and the new-onset risk of arthritis. Results: Out of the 6,597 individuals analyzed in the cohort, 586 (8.9%) were diagnosed with new-onset arthritis. Median sleep duration was notably shorter in the new-onset arthritis group (6.63 vs. 6.41 h, p < 0.05). There was a notable negative correlation found between new-onset risk of arthritis and sleep duration, with each Interquartile Range (IQR) increment in sleep leading to a 16% risk reduction (OR: 0.864; 95% CI: 0.784-0.954). Stratified analyses revealed BMI as a potential modifier in the sleep-arthritis relationship (P for interaction = 0.05). Mediation analyses further showed that about 3.5% of the association was mediated by BMI. Additionally, the inclusion of sleep duration improved the arthritis predictive power of our model, with an IDI of 0.105 (0.0203, 0.1898) and an NRI of 0.0013 (0.0004, 0.0022) after adding sleep duration to the basic model. Conclusion: In the middle-aged and older adult demographic of China, increased sleep duration is associated with a decreased new-onset risk of arthritis, with BMI potentially playing a role in mediating this connection.

Background: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most common cause of chronic heel pain among adults. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is the recommended in the current guidelines, and the small needle-knife yields acceptable clinical effects for musculoskeletal pain. Objective: To systematically compare the efficacy of the small needle-knife versus ESWT for the treatment of PF. Methods: The present review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (i.e., "PROSPERO", CRD42023448813). Two of the authors searched electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the small needle-knife versus ESWT for the treatment of PF, and collected outcomes including curative effect, pain intensity, and function. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook Risk of Bias tool and the quality of the RCTs was evaluated according to the Jadad Scale. The same authors independently performed data extraction from the included studies, which were imported into Review Manager version 5.4.1(Copenhagen: Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, 2020) for meta-analysis. Results: The initial literature search retrieved 886 studies, of which 6 were eventually included in this study. Meta-analysis revealed no significant difference in curative effect (OR = 1.87; 95 % CI [0.80, 4.37], p = .15) nor short-term pain improvement (MD = 2.20; 95 % CI [-2.77, 7.16], p = .39) between the small needle-knife and ESWT. However, the small needle-knife may be more effective than ESWT for pain improvement in mid-term (MD = 9.11; 95 % CI [5.08, 13.15], p< .00001) and long-term follow-ups (MD = 10.71; 95 % CI [2.18, 19.25], p< .00001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the small needle-knife combined with a corticosteroid injection yielded a statistically significant difference in reduction of pain intensity at all follow-ups (MD = 4.84; 95 % CI [1.33, 8.36], p = .007; MD = 10.99; 95 % CI [8.30, 13.69], p< .00001; MD = 17.87; 95 % CI [15.26, 20.48], p< .00001). Meta-analysis revealed no statistical differences in short-term (MD = 1.34; 95 % CI [-3.19, 5.86], p = .56) and mid-term (MD = 2.75; 95 % CI [-1.21, 6.72], p = . 17) functional improvement between the needle-knife and ESWT groups. In a subgroup analysis of moderate-quality studies, the small needle-knife demonstrated a favorable effect on mid-term functional improvement (MD = 1.58; 95 % CI [0.52, 2.65], p = .004), with low heterogeneity (χ2 = 0.77, p = .038, I2 = 0 %). Conclusion: Pain reduction and functional improvement are essential for the treatment of PF. Therefore, treatment using the small needle-knife may be superior to ESWT. Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis may provide alternative treatment options for patients with PF as well as more reliable, evidence-based recommendations supporting use of the small needle-knife.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the safety and the mid-term efficacy of unilateral biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (UBE-TLIF) and 3D microscope-assisted transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MMIS-TLIF) for treating single-segment lumbar spondylolisthesis with lumbar spinal stenosis (DLS-LSS). METHODS: The clinical data of 49 patients who underwent UBE-TLIF or MMIS-TLIF in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed, including 26 patients who underwent the UBE-TLIF and 23 patients who underwent the MMIS-TLIF. The demographic and perioperative outcomes of patients before and after surgery were reviewed. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were used to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients before surgery and at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after surgery. The lumbar lordosis angle (LL), disc height (DH) and lumbar intervertebral fusion rate were assessed before surgery and at the last follow-up. RESULTS: The VAS and ODI scores of the two groups were improved compared with those before surgery. The ODI of UBE-TLIF group was lower than that of MMIS-TLIF group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, and there were no significant differences between the two groups at other time points (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in VAS between the two groups at each time point (P > 0.05). However, the UBE-TLIF group had more advantages in blood loss and hospital stay. The complications between the UBE-TLIF group (11.54%) and the MMIS-TLIF group (17.39%) were comparable (P > 0.05). Radiographic outcomes showed that the LL and DH of the two groups were improved compared with those before surgery, and the difference before and after surgery was not significant (P > 0.05). The fusion rate was 96.2% in the UBE-TLIF group and 95.7% in the MMIS-TLIF group. There was no significant difference in the fusion rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both UBE-TLIF and MMIS-TLIF have favorable outcomes for treating single-segment DLS-LSS. Both groups have the advantages of clear surgical vision, high surgical efficiency, and favorable mid-term efficacy. In addition, compared with MMIS-TLIF, UBE-TLIF causes less intraoperative bleeding and faster postoperative recovery.

Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) is a highly fatal and disabling event, and its incidence rate is increasing in China. Therefore, we collated the epidemiological factors of TSCI in different regions of China to update the earlier systematic review published in 2018. Method: We searched four English and three Chinese electronic databases from 1978 to October 1, 2022. From the included reports, information on sample characteristics, incidence, injury characteristics, prognostic factors, and economic burden was extracted. The selection of data was based on the PRISMA statement. The quality of the included studies was assessed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) tool. The results of the meta-analysis were presented in the form of pooled frequency and forest plots. Results: A total of 59 reports (60 studies) from 23 provinces were included, of which 41 were in the Chinese language. The random pooled incidence of TSCI in China was estimated to be 65.15 per million (95% CI: 47.20-83.10 per million), with a range of 6.7 to 569.7 per million. The pooled male-to-female ratio was 1.95:1. The pooled mean age of the cases at the time of injury was 45.4 years. Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and high falls were found to be the leading causes of TSCI. Incomplete quadriplegia and AISA/Frankel grade D were the most common types of TSCI. Cervical level injury was the most prevalent. The pooled in-hospital mortality and complication rates for TSCI in China were 3% (95% CI: 2-4%) and 35% (95% CI: 23-47%). Respiratory problems were the most common complication and the leading cause of death. Conclusion: Compared with previous studies, the epidemiological data on TSCI in China has changed significantly. A need to update the data over time is essential to implement appropriate preventive measures and formulate interventions according to the characteristics of the Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the mechanism of Modified Danggui Sini Decoction in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis via a combination of network pharmacology and molecular docking. METHODS: The main chemical components and corresponding targets of Modified Danggui Sini Decoction were searched and screened in TCMSP database. The disease targets of knee osteoarthritis were summarized in GeneCards, OMIM, PharmGkb, TTD, and DrugBank databases. The visual interactive network of "drugs-active components-disease targets" was drawn by Cytoscape 3.8.1 software. The protein-protein interaction network was constructed by STRING database. Then, GO function and KEGG pathway enrichment were analyzed by Bioconductor/R, and the pathway of the highest degree of correlation with knee osteoarthritis was selected for specific analysis. Finally, molecular docking was used to screen and verify core genes by AutoDockTools software. RESULTS: Seventy-one main components of Modified Danggui Sini Decoction and 116 potential therapeutic targets of knee osteoarthritis were selected. The KEGG pathway and the GO function enrichment analysis showed that the targets of Modified Danggui Sini Decoction in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis were mainly concentrated on PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, IL-17 signaling pathway, apoptosis signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, Th17 cell differentiation signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, and NF-κB signaling pathway. It mainly involved inflammatory reaction, regulation of apoptotic signaling pathway, cellular response to regulation of inflammatory response, cellular response to oxidative stress, and other biological processes. The molecular docking results showed that ESR1-wogonin, MAPK1-quercetin, RELA-wogonin, RELA-baicalein, TP53-baicalein, TP53-quercetin, and RELA-quercetin have strong docking activities. CONCLUSION: Modified Danggui Sini Decoction has the hierarchical network characteristics of "multicomponent, multitarget, multifunction, and multipathway" in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It mainly regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of chondrocytes by regulating the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and establishes cross-talk with many downstream inflammatory-related pathways to reduce the overall inflammatory response. Meanwhile, HIF-1 expression was used to ensure the normal function and metabolism of knee joint under hypoxia condition, and the above processes play a key role in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

Using the concept of "cloning", we report herein a rational approach to grow single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with controlled chirality via an open-end growth mechanism. Specifically, by using open-end SWNTs as "seeds/catalysts" (without metal catalysts), "new/duplicate" SWNTs could be grown and cloned from the parent segments via an open-end growth mechanism. Using this strategy, we have measured more than 600 short seed segments and have found that the yield of cloning is relatively low (around 9%). This yield can be greatly improved up to 40% by growing SWNTs on quartz substrate. Atomic force microscopy and micro resonance Raman spectroscopy characterization indicate that the parent nanotube and the duplicate nanotube have the same structure. These findings provide a potential approach for growing SWNTs with controlled chirality, which are important for the application of SWNTs in nanoelectronics.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can prevent further spinal cord injury (SCI) caused by spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury to the maximum extent, which has been reported increasingly in recent years. However its security and effectiveness still lack of high-quality medical evidence. In this study, we will perform a systematic review of previously published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HBO therapy for SCI. METHODS: All potential RCTs on HBO therapy for SCI will be searched from the following electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, Wanfang database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. We will search all electronic databases from their initiation to the September 30, 2020 in spite of language and publication date. Two contributors will independently select studies from all searched literatures, extract data from included trials, and evaluate study quality for all eligible RCTs using Cochrane risk of bias tool, respectively. Any confusion will be resolved by consulting contributor and a consensus will be reached. We will utilize RevMan 5.3 software to pool the data and to conduct the data analysis. RESULTS: The quality of the assessments will be assessed through Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. Data will be disseminated through publications in peer-reviewed journals. CONCLUSION: This study will provide evidence to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HBO therapy for SCI at evidence-based medicine level. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: INPLASY 2020100084.

Dotting the i's: Stimuli-responsive optoelectronic devices are formed from the title transistors functionalized with photoactive quantum dots. The p-type semiconducting tubes show a fast current decrease under UV irradiation and reversibility when the UV irradiation is switched off. In contrast, ambipolar tubes show mirror-image photoswitching effects when negative and positive gate bias voltages are applied.
