INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the self-assessment skills of third-year dental students regarding their performance in complete removable prosthodontics (CRP) preclinical course. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on all third-year dental students attending the International Dental College of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The students were requested to self-assess their performance in primary impression making, custom tray fabrication, border moulding, final impression making, master cast fabrication, record-base fabrication and tooth arrangement in CRP preclinical course. The performance of dental students in each step was scored by themselves and their mentors. Data were analysed by the Mann-Whitney U, Pearson's correlation and t-tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Totally 25 male (55.6%) and 20 female (44.4%) dental students were evaluated. Significant differences were noted between male and female dental students in self-assessment scores regarding adequate extension of the custom tray (p = .027), the correct position of tray handle (p = .020), visibility of vestibular width and depth on the cast (p = .011), the coincidence of upper and lower midlines (p = .005) and correct orientation of maxillary and mandibular planes in the articulator (p = .036). The mean self-assessment score of female students was significantly higher than that of male students (p = .01). The scores given by the mentors were not significantly different for male and female students (p = .975). The difference between the self-assessment score of students and the mentor score was not significant (p = .067) either in males or in females (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Undergraduate dental students favourably self-assessed their performance in all steps of the preclinical course of CRP, comparable with their mentor assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the increase of implant treatments in daily practice, graduates should be well acquainted with appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge in implantology. This study sought to assess the knowledge and attitude of undergraduate students towards the benefits of their courses in the implant dentistry curriculum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This survey study was performed on all senior dental students at Pardis International Campus, School of Dentistry of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire containing various items on knowledge and attitude. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were already approved. Collected data were coded, entered in Microsoft Excel 2019, and analysed by t-test (α = .05). RESULTS: Forty questionnaires were filled out by 28 female and 12 male students. Only 7.5% and 12.5% of students reported that they had adequate knowledge to conduct the surgical and prosthetic steps of dental implant treatment, respectively. The majority of students had a positive attitude towards the quality of theoretical education. However, less than 50% of them perceived the same about their practical education. No significant difference existed between male and female students regarding their responses to the knowledge and attitude questions (p = .458 and p = .288, respectively). Ninety percent of the students felt the need for further education regarding dental implant treatment in the undergraduate curriculum. CONCLUSION: Despite the satisfaction of the theoretical knowledge, most senior students believed that they did not achieve adequate expertise to practice after graduation and were willing to receive further practical training in implantology.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the effect of printing layer thickness on the marginal and internal fit of interim crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A maxillary first molar model was prepared for ceramic restoration. Thirty-six crowns were printed with three different layer thicknesses using a digital light processing-based three-dimensional printer (25, 50, and 100 µm [LT 25, LT 50, and LT 100]). The marginal and internal gaps of the crowns were measured with replica technique. An analysis of variance was conducted to determine if there were significant differences between the groups (ɑ = .05). RESULTS: The marginal gap of LT 100 group was significantly higher than that LT 25 (p = .002) and LT 50 groups (p ≤ .001). The LT 25 group has significantly larger axial gaps than LT 50 group (p = .013); however, there were no statistically significant differences between other groups. The LT 50 group showed the smallest axio-occlusal gap. The mean occlusal gap differed significantly by printing layer thickness (p ≤ .001), with the largest gap occurring for LT 100. CONCLUSIONS: Provisional crowns printed with 50 µm layer thickness provided the best marginal and internal fit. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is recommended that provisional crowns be printed with a 50 µm layer thickness to ensure optimal marginal and internal fit.

Objective: Dental educational curricula are under constant modification and improvement. However, designing a comprehensive, efficient, and flexible curriculum is still challenging for the authorities. An efficient curriculum should obviate the educational needs of students and promote their knowledge and expertise for future practice. Time planning of clinical rotations is highly important for optimization of the learning process. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of two different timing models of clinical rotations, namely four versus two rotations in each semester. Materials and Methods: A total of 74 dental students and 54 faculty members of Tehran University of Medical Science that experienced both rotation models for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) participated in this study. A questionnaire was designed to assess different aspects of the two timing-models. Results: A one-sample t-test indicated that students' and faculty members' mean perception were significantly better regarding the two-rotation program. Conclusion: This study indicated that changing the time planning of educational rotations can affect different aspects of education.

Introduction: All-ceramic restorations are being widely used due to its various advantages. However, they have restricted durability and may have to be removed. The conventional procedure for removal is grinding the restoration with rotary instruments which are considered time-consuming and inconvenient. A newer advantageous method is the application of lasers for debonding ceramics from the tooth surface. The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive literature review on laser-aided ceramic restorations debonding. Methods: We searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Seven articles from 2011 to 2018 were identified. Studies were assessed for the efficacy of laser application and the amount of pulpal temperature rise. Results: Studies selected were categorized according to variables including shear bond strength, debonding time and intrapulpal temperature. Oztoprak and Iseri investigated that erbium-doped yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser application reduced shear bond strength of ceramic laminate veneers. The time of debonding took an average of 190 seconds in Rechmann's study and 106 seconds in Morford's study. One of the main issues while using the laser is thermal irritation of the pulp. A 5.5°C temperature increase may cause pulpal damage according to Zach and Cohen. Philips et al and Rechmann et al reported no intrapulpal harm due to temperature increase. Additionally, Phillips et al demonstrated that the laser setting affects both the debonding time and the temperature alterations and that a laser adjustment of 2.5 W/25 Hz would be the best safest group. Conclusion: Removal of ceramic crowns and veneers from tooth surfaces can be successfully done by Er:YAG laser application in a less time-consuming procedure and without any harm to the underlying dentin. However, a temperature rise in the pulp may occur which could be overcome by adequate air water cooling.

Introduction: The removal of ceramic veneers is a time-consuming procedure in a dental office. Little research has been done in alternative removal techniques for ceramic veneers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the removal of feldspathic and lithium disilicate reinforced glass ceramic veneers by Er, Cr: YSGG and to measure debonding time and pulpal temperature increase during veneer removal. Methods: Fifty-seven bovine incisor teeth were prepared and divided into 3 groups. Ceramic specimens with a thickness of 0.7mm, a width of 4mm and a length of 8 mm were fabricated from feldspathic ceramic, lithium disilicate reinforced glass ceramic HT (high translucency) and lithium disilicate reinforced glass ceramic MO (medium opacity) (19 for each group). Specimens were cemented on the labial surface of incisors using resin cement. The Er, Cr: YSGG laser was applied to each specimen at 2.5 W and 25 Hz. Debonding time was measured for each specimen, and the intrapulpal temperature was detected in 3 specimens for each group. Data were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at significance level of 0.05 (α = 0.05). Results: Mean debonding time was 103.68 (26.76), 106.58 (47.22) and 103.84 (32.90) seconds for feldspathic, lithium disilicate MO, and lithium disilicate HT respectively. There was no significant statistical difference among the groups (P value = 0.96). The intrapulpal temperature increase was less than 1°C in all groups. Conclusion: Er, Cr: YSGG can successfully be used to efficiently debond feldspathic and lithium disilicate reinforced glass ceramic veneers. There was no significant difference for debonding time among these ceramic materials. During ceramic laminate veneer removal by laser irradiation, no irritating temperature rise was detected.

RESUMO

Different techniques have been introduced for the removal of ceramic brackets. Since the early 1990s, lasers have been used experimentally for debonding ceramic brackets. The goal of this study is to give a comprehensive literature review on laser-aided ceramic bracket debonding. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were used to identify dental articles with the following combination of key words: Ceramic brackets, Debonding, and Laser. Sixteen English articles from 2004 to 2015 were selected. The selected studies were categorized according to the variables investigated including the intrapulpal temperature, shear bond strength, debonding time, enamel damage and bracket failure. Most articles reported decreased shear bond strength and debonding time following laser irradiation without any critical and irritating increase in pulpal temperature. There were no reports of bracket failure or enamel damage. Laser irradiation is an efficient way to reduce shear bond strength of ceramic bracket and debonding time. This technique is a safe way for removing ceramic bracket with minimal impact on intrapulpal temperature and enamel surface and it reduces ceramic bracket failure.

OBJECTIVES: Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that mediates mechanical bone loading. Cyclic guanosine 3', 5' monophosphate (cGMP) is a NO-induced effector molecule. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of NO-cGMP pathway on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats by use of two phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors namely sildenafil and tadalafil as chemical tools. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five male Wistar rats were divided into three equal groups (n=15) based on the substance they received. The first group received daily injections of tadalafil; the second group received daily injections of sildenafil and the third group received daily injections of normal saline. The orthodontic appliances consisted of nickel-titanium closed-coil spring ligated between the maxillary right incisor and the first molar of the animals for 21 days. The amount of tooth movement was measured in all three groups at the end of this period. Histological analysis was performed to assess root resorption lacunae, osteoclast number and periodontal ligament (PDL) thickness. RESULTS: All appliance-treated molars in the experimental and control groups showed evidence of tooth movement. The mean OTM was calculated to be 0.39±0.16, 0.32±0.16 and 0.26±0.16mm in tadalafil, sildenafil and control groups, respectively and there were no significant differences in OTM among the study groups (P>0.05). In the tadalafil group, significantly greater root resorption on the tension side was seen when compared with controls (P≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Tadalafil and sildenafil PDE-5 inhibitors affecting the NO-cGMP pathway did not affect OTM in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoclasts and osteoblasts are responsible for regulating bone homeostasis during which the trace element zinc has been shown to exert a cumulative effect on bone mass by stimulating osteoblastic bone formation and inhibiting osteoclastic bone resorption. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of zinc (Zn) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 44 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of 11 animals each and received 0, 1.5, 20 and 50 ppm Zn in distilled water for 60 days. In the last 21 days of the study, nickel-titanium closed coil springs were ligated between maxillary right incisors and first molars of all rats, and tooth movement was measured at the end of this period. Histological analysis of hematoxylin/eosin slides was performed to assess root resorption lacunae, osteoclast number and periodontal ligament (PDL) width. RESULTS: Mean OTM was calculated as 51.8, 49.1, 35.5 and 45 µm in the 0, 1.5, 20 and 50 ppm zinc-receiving groups, respectively. There were no significant differences in neither OTM nor histological parameters among the study groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the results obtained in the current investigation, increase in supplementary zinc up to 50 ppm does not affect the rate of OTM neither bone and root resorption in rats.
