RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Nursing associations require that nurses develop the skills to integrate evidence into practice to support the quality of care. CONTEXT: Lack of self-confidence in the operational steps of evidence-based practice was identified as a barrier to integrating evidence into nursing practice. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of a journal club (JC) on nursing students' self-efficacy (SE), expectations, and intentions to use evidence. METHOD: Quasi-experimental, longitudinal approach with a non-randomized comparison group. RESULTS: The development of SE toward the use of evidence-based practices favored students who participated in the JC (n=48) compared to students who received a conventional educational modality (CEM) (n=50). However, there was no significant group x time interaction effect on expectations or intentions. DISCUSSION: The significant positive changes beyond the CEM may be explained by the fact that the JC incorporated modes of influence on SE. CONCLUSION: The positive effect associated with the JC on SE is difficult to sustain without continued practice. It is important to maintain high outcome expectations within nursing training.

RESUMO

AIM: This qualitative study describes the experience of nursing students who construct and use electronic concepts maps in theoretical and clinical settings. BACKGROUND: Although concept maps are seen as innovative and effective teaching and learning tools, little qualitative data exists that describes the process by which students learn to master the skill of concept mapping. METHOD: A descriptive approach was used to analyze the data collected during 12 semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Motivated, open-minded students tend to perceive the usefulness of concept mapping, making the experience positive. Workshops, along with constructive feedback, were deemed essential to helping students master the skill of concept mapping. CONCLUSION: The results of this study will contribute to the successful integration of group concepts maps as part of a new competency-based nursing program. Results could also be beneficial to programs that wish to adopt concept mapping.

RESUMO

Nursing educators need strategies for preparing students to be successful in the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®). Understanding the educational practices used is an important step in informing curricular decisions and helping regulatory agencies evaluate nursing programs' efforts to prepare students for practice. This study described strategies used in Canadian nursing programs to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN®. A cross-sectional descriptive national survey was completed by the program's director, chair, dean, or another faculty member involved in the program's NCLEX-RN® preparatory strategies using the LimeSurvey platform. Most participating programs (n = 24; 85.7%) use one to three strategies to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN®. Strategies include the requirement to purchase a commercial product, the administration of computer-based exams, NCLEX-RN® preparation courses or workshops, and time dedicated to NCLEX-RN® preparation in one or more courses. There is variation among Canadian nursing programs in how students are prepared for the NCLEX-RN®. Some programs invest considerable effort in preparation activities, while others have limited ones.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to map the infection prevention and control education and training that long-term care homes use with families during a pandemic or infectious outbreak. INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions were imposed on visits to long-term care homes to decrease the risk of virus transmission. These restrictions had negative consequences for both residents and families. A scoping review of infection prevention and control education and training used with families will inform family visitation practices and policies during future infectious outbreaks. INCLUSION CRITERIA: This review will examine literature describing infection prevention and control education and training provided to families in long-term care homes. Research and narrative papers, including experimental; quasi-experimental; descriptive observational quantitative and qualitative studies; and reviews, text, policy, and opinion papers, will be considered for inclusion. METHODS: A 3-step approach will be followed, in line with the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. Published literature will be searched for in databases, including CINAHL, Embase, ERIC, MEDLINE, and AgeLine. Published and unpublished papers will be considered from 1990 to the present, in English or French. The World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, and the Public Health Agency of Canada websites will be searched for unpublished and gray literature. Two authors will independently review and assess studies for inclusion and extract the data. The findings will be charted in a narrative summary and tables.

RESUMO

For healthy and independent older adults, aging in place can be seen as identical to any other adult living at home. Little is known about how frail seniors, particularly those who speak a minority language, manage the challenges of aging in place. The present qualitative descriptive study explores the strategies that Canadian French-speaking seniors have put in place to counter their loss of independence and promote their ability to stay in their home. Semistructured individual interviews were conducted with 39 older adults and transcribed, followed by content analysis to identify common themes related to study objectives. Six themes emerged in response to strategies described for aging in place. Findings reveal the limited extent to which language issues were perceived as a barrier by participants. In conclusion, the results of this study provide us with fruitful insights to guide community nursing practice, future research, and public policy.

RESUMO

New Brunswick is one of the provinces most affected by the aging of the population. Moreover, aging at home in Francophone minority communities is a major challenge in rural areas. The goal of this paper is to identify the main advantages and disadvantages of aging at home and to expose organizational strategies deployed by seniors and their families in order to promote aging in place. The case study is the method of analysis that we have recommended. Our methodology is based on content analysis of 13 semi-structured interviews with seniors and their children. The results show that family and community support, resourcefulness and resiliency, the practice of leisure activities as well as the living environment are among the principal means used by older adults to promote aging at home.

RESUMO

The complete repertoire of cellular and molecular determinants that influence graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) is not known. Using a well-established murine model of GVHD (B6-->bm12 mice), we sought to elucidate the role of the donor non-T cell compartment and molecular determinants therein in the pathogenesis of GVHD. In this model the acute GVHD-inducing effects of purified B6 wild-type (wt) CD4(+) T cells was inhibited by wt non-T cells in a dose-dependent manner. Paradoxically, unlike the chronic GVHD phenotype observed in bm12 mice transplanted with B6wt unfractionated splenocytes, bm12 recipients of B6ccr2-null unfractionated splenocytes developed acute GVHD and died of IFN-gamma-mediated bone marrow aplasia. This switch from chronic to acute GVHD was associated with increased target organ infiltration of activated CD4(+) T cells as well as enhanced expression of Th1/Th2 cytokines, chemokines, and the antiapoptotic factor bfl1. In vitro, ccr2(-/-) CD4(+) T cells in unfractionated splenocytes underwent significantly less activation-induced cell death than B6wt CD4(+) T cells, providing another potential mechanistic basis along with enhanced expression of bfl1 for the increased numbers of activated T cells in target organs of B6ccr2(-/-) splenocyte-->bm12 mice. Collectively, these findings have important clinical implications, as they implicate the donor non-T cell compartment as a critical regulator of GVHD and suggest that ccr2 expression in this cellular compartment may be an important molecular determinant of activation-induced cell death and GVHD pathogenesis.
