A historical review of the growth of the health services in Jamaica - Period 18th - 20th century

Public health programmes and services have developed mainly in response to a series of crises and without regard to advanced long term planning or relating to other social developments in the community: The programmes for the eradication of yaws, hookworm, and malaria responded to the high rate of morbidity and mortality, occasioned by the incidence of these diseases. In this decade however attempts are being made to define the relationships between health and economic and social development. The importance of health has been said to lie not only in its contribution to well being but also in its direct relationship to production, productivity and the capacity to consume and to save. (AU)
