PURPOSE: Social cognition disorders after stroke are poorly described. Yet, rehabilitation difficulties are frequent after stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of social cognition disorders 3 years after a first-ever stroke and to assess the factors associated with this condition. The second aim was to describe all the cognitive domains altered in the same population. METHODS: Patients who suffered from a first-ever ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment, which included the mini-Social cognition and Emotional Assessment (SEA) for evaluating social cognition. RESULTS: The 43 included patients were 67±15 years old, with a median Neurological Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (± interquartile range) at 0±1, and a median modified Rankin Scale (± interquartile range) at 1±1. Twenty patients (46.5%) had poor results in the facial emotions subtest; this factor was associated with a low educational grade (P=0.001). Fourteen patients (34.2%) had poor results on the "faux-pas" recognition subtest; this factor was associated with nonverbal episodic memory disorders (P=0.01). Thirty four patients (79.1%) had cognitive impairment, with at least 1 cognitive domain affected. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates the high frequency of social cognition impairment 3 years after the first-ever stroke in young patients. Doctors and nurses should be sensitized to cognitive handicap after stroke because of difficulties for rehabilitation and returning to work.

The polarity in ZnO nanowires is an important issue since it strongly affects surface configuration and reactivity, nucleation and growth, electro-optical properties, and nanoscale-engineering device performances. However, measuring statistically the polarity of ZnO nanowire arrays grown by chemical bath deposition and elucidating its correlation with the polarity of the underneath polycrystalline ZnO seed layer grown by the sol-gel process represents a major difficulty. To address that issue, we combine resonant x-ray diffraction (XRD) at Zn K-edge using synchrotron radiation with piezoelectric force microscopy and polarity-sensitive chemical etching to statistically investigate the polarity of more than 107 nano-objects both on the macroscopic and local microscopic scales, respectively. By using high temperature annealing under an argon atmosphere, it is shown that the compact, highly c-axis oriented ZnO seed layer is more than 92% Zn-polar and that only a few small O-polar ZnO grains with an amount less than 8% are formed. Correlatively, the resulting ZnO nanowires are also found to be Zn-polar, indicating that their polarity is transferred from the c-axis oriented ZnO grains acting as nucleation sites in the seed layer. These findings pave the way for the development of new strategies to form unipolar ZnO nanowire arrays as a requirement for a number of nanoscale-engineering devices like piezoelectric nanogenerators. They also highlight the great advantage of resonant XRD as a macroscopic, non-destructive method to simultaneously and statistically measure the polarity of ZnO nanowire arrays and of the underneath ZnO seed layer.

The selection of the polarity of ZnO nanowires grown by chemical bath deposition offers a great advantage for their integration into a wide variety of engineering devices. However, the nucleation process of ZnO nanowires and its dependence on their polarity is still unknown despite its importance for optimizing their morphology and properties and thus to enhance the related device performances. To tackle this major issue, we combine an in situ analysis of the nucleation process of O- and Zn-polar ZnO nanowires on O- and Zn-polar ZnO single crystals, respectively, using synchrotron radiation-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction with ex situ transmission and scanning electron microscopy. We show that the formation of ZnO nanowires obeys three successive phases from the induction, through nucleation to growth phases. The characteristics of each phase, including the nucleation temperature, the shape and dimension of nuclei, as well as their radial and axial development are found to depend on the polarity of ZnO nanowires. A comprehensive description reporting the dominant physicochemical processes in each phase and their dependence on the polarity of ZnO nanowires is presented, revisiting their formation process step-by-step. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the phenomena at work during the growth of ZnO nanowires by chemical bath deposition and open the perspective to develop a more accurate control of their properties at each step of the formation process.

Background: Fatigue is a frequent symptom after stroke. We aimed to determine the association between fatigue and cognitive performance in patients with ischemic stroke who received acute revascularization therapy (IV thrombolysis and/or mechanical thrombectomy). Methods: Seventy patients were prospectively included in the stroke unit of the University Hospital of Dijon, France. A follow-up was performed at 6 months with clinical examination, fatigue assessment by the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. Patients with fatigue (FSS score >4) were compared with patients without fatigue. Neuropsychological factors associated with fatigue at 6 months were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Fatigue was reported by 34.3% of patients. Patients with fatigue were older, had more frequent residual handicap, depressive symptoms, and impaired quality of life. They had more frequently low score (<26) on the MoCA scale (79.2 vs. 47.8%, OR = 4.15; 95% CI: 1.32-13, p = 0.015), memory impairment (60 vs. 30.6%, OR = 3.41; 95% CI: 1.09-10.7, p = 0.035), and executive dysfunction (65 vs. 30.8%, OR = 4.18; 95% CI: 1.33-13.1, p = 0.014). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, only memory impairment was independently associated with fatigue (OR = 5.70; 95% CI: 1.09-29.6, p = 0.039). Further analyses restricted to non-depressed patients (n = 58, 84.1%) showed in multivariable models that a score < 26 on MoCA scale (OR 5.12; 95% CI: 1.00-26.2, p = 0.05), and a memory impairment (OR = 6.17; 95% CI: 1.06-35.9, p = 0.043) were associated with fatigue. There was also a non-significant trend toward an association between divided attention deficit and fatigue (OR = 6.79; 95% CI: 0.80-57.6, p = 0.079). Conclusion: The association between fatigue and subtle cognitive impairment including memory or attention deficits could be of interest in elaborating future interventional studies to evaluate the impact of therapeutic strategies, including cognitive rehabilitation, on fatigue.

OBJECTIVE: At present emotional experience and implicit emotion regulation (IER) abilities are mainly assessed though self-reports, which are subjected to several biases. The aim of the present studies was to validate the Clock'N test, a recently developed time estimation task employing emotional priming to assess implicitly emotional reactivity and IER. METHODS: In Study 1, the Clock'N test was administered to 150 healthy participants with different age, laterality and gender, in order to ascertain whether these factors affected the test results. In phase 1 participant were asked to judge the duration of seven sounds. In phase 2, before judging the duration of the same sounds, participants were presented with short arousing video-clip used as emotional priming stimuli. Time warp was calculated as the difference in time estimation between phase 2 and phase 1, and used to assess how emotions affected subjective time estimations. In study 2, a representative sample was selected to provide normative scores to be employed to assess emotional reactivity (Score 1) and IER (Score 2), and to calculate statistical cutoffs, based on the 10th and 90th score distribution percentiles. RESULTS: Converging with previous findings, the results of study 1 suggested that the Clock'N test can be employed to assess both emotional reactivity, as indexed by an initial time underestimation, and IER, as indexed by a progressive shift to time overestimation. No effects of gender, age and laterality were found. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the Clock'N test is adapted to assess emotional reactivity and IER. After collection of data on the test discriminant and convergent validity, this test may be employed to assess deficits in these abilities in different clinical populations.

ZnO nanowires are usually formed by physical and chemical deposition techniques following the bottom-up approach consisting in supplying the reactants on a nucleation surface heated at a given temperature. We demonstrate an original alternative approach for the formation of ZnO nanowire arrays with high structural and optical quality, which is based on the spontaneous transformation of a ZnO thin film deposited by sol-gel process following a simple annealing. The development of these ZnO nanowires occurs through successive shape transitions, including the intermediate formation of pyramid-shaped islands. Their nucleation under near-equilibrium conditions is expected to be governed by thermodynamic considerations via the total free energy minimization related to the nanowire shape. It is further strongly assisted by the drastic reordering of the matter and by recrystallization phenomena through the massive transport of zinc and oxygen atoms towards the localized growth areas. The spontaneous shape transition process thus combines the easiness and low-cost of sol-gel process and simple annealing with the assets of the vapor phase deposition techniques. These findings cast a light on the fundamental mechanisms driving the spontaneous formation of ZnO nanowires and, importantly, reveal the great technological potential of the spontaneous shape transition process as a promising alternative approach to the more usual bottom-up approach.

OBJECTIVE: Time perception is fundamental for human experience. A topic which has attracted the attention of researchers for long time is how the stimulus sensory modality (e.g., images vs. sounds) affects time judgments. However, so far, no study has directly compared the effect of two sensory modalities using emotional stimuli on time judgments. METHODS: In the present two studies, healthy participants were asked to estimate the duration of a pure sound preceded by the presentation of odors vs. emotional videos as priming stimuli (implicit emotion-eliciting task). During the task, skin conductance (SC) was measured as an index of arousal. RESULTS: Olfactory stimuli resulted in an increase in SC and in a constant time overestimation. Video stimuli resulted in an increase in SC (emotional arousal), which decreased linearly overtime. Critically, video stimuli resulted in an initial time underestimation, which shifted progressively towards a time overestimation. These results suggest that video stimuli recruited both arousal-related and attention-related mechanisms, and that the role played by these mechanisms changed overtime. CONCLUSIONS: These pilot studies highlight the importance of comparing the effect of different kinds on temporal estimation tasks, and suggests that odors are well suited to investigate arousal-related temporal distortions, while videos are ideal to investigate both arousal-related and attention-related mechanisms.

Controlling the polarity of ZnO nanowires in addition to the uniformity of their structural morphology in terms of position, vertical alignment, length, diameter, and period is still a technological and fundamental challenge for real-world device integration. In order to tackle this issue, we specifically combine the selective area growth on prepatterned polar c-plane ZnO single crystals using electron-beam lithography, with the chemical bath deposition. The formation of ZnO nanowires with a highly controlled structural morphology and a high optical quality is demonstrated over large surface areas on both polar c-plane ZnO single crystals. Importantly, the polarity of ZnO nanowires can be switched from O- to Zn-polar, depending on the polarity of prepatterned ZnO single crystals. This indicates that no fundamental limitations prevent ZnO nanowires from being O- or Zn-polar. In contrast to their catalyst-free growth by vapor-phase deposition techniques, the possibility to control the polarity of ZnO nanowires grown in solution is remarkable, further showing the strong interest in the chemical bath deposition and hydrothermal techniques. The single O- and Zn-polar ZnO nanowires additionally exhibit distinctive cathodoluminescence spectra. To a broader extent, these findings open the way to the ultimate fabrication of well-organized heterostructures made from ZnO nanowires, which can act as building blocks in a large number of electronic, optoelectronic, and photovoltaic devices.
