RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Cytokines play an important role in the development of cancer. Several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cytokine genes have been reported to be associated with the development and severity of inflammatory diseases and cancer predisposition. This study was undertaken to evaluate a possible association of interleukin 2 (IL-2) (- 330A>C) gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility to oral cancer. METHODS: The SNP in IL-2 (-330A>C) gene was genotyped in 300 oral cancer patients and in similar number of healthy volunteers by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism and the association of the gene with the disease was evaluated. RESULTS: IL-2 (-330A>C) gene polymorphism was significantly associated with oral cancer whereas it was neither associated with clinicopathological status nor with cancer pain. The AC heterozygous genotype was significantly associated with oral cancer patients as compared to controls [odds ratio (OR): 3.0; confidence interval (CI): 2.14-4.20; P<0.001]. The C allele frequency was also significantly associated with oral cancer (OR: 1.80; CI: 1.39-2.33; P<0.001). IL-2 (-330A>C) gene polymorphism was also associated with oral cancer in tobacco smokers and chewers. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that oral cancer patients had significantly higher frequency of AA genotype but significantly lower frequency of AC genotype and C allele compared to controls. The IL-2 AC genotype and C allele of IL-2 (-330A>C) gene polymorphisms could be potential protective factors and might reduce the risk of oral cancer in Indian population.

RESUMO

Oral cancer is a multifactorial disease process and involves complex interactions between gene to gene and gene to environmental factors. Interleukin 8 (IL-8), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, having angiogenic activity with elevated expression in tumor cells, is reported to play an essential role in oral cancer development. This study was conducted with the aim to investigate the role of IL-8 (-A251T) gene polymorphism in susceptibility, progression, and self-reporting pain in oral cancer. The single nucleotide polymorphisms of the IL-8 (-A251T) gene were screened in 300 patients with oral cancer and 300 healthy controls, by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Genotype and allele frequencies were evaluated by chi-square test and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of associations. The results of the study demonstrated that IL-8 (-A251T) gene polymorphism was significantly associated with susceptibility of oral cancer, whereas its correlation with clinico-pathological status or pain due to oral cancer could not be established. The AT heterozygous (OR 5.31; CI 3.38-8.34; p 0.0001) and AA homozygous (OR 2.89; CI 1.76-4.75; p 0.0001) had a greater risk for oral cancer compared to TT homozygous. Furthermore, significantly increased values of A allele frequencies compared to T allele were observed in all patients (OR 1.56; CI 1.24-1.96; p 0.0002). Tobacco chewing and smoking were also found to influence the development of oral cancer and increased the incidence of pain in oral cancer patients. The findings of this study suggest that the IL-8 (-A251T) gene polymorphism may be associated with increased risk of oral cancer.

RESUMO

Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is one of the immunomodulatory cytokines that plays an important role in cellular functions against tumor development and progression. IL-18 (-607) C/A and (-0137) G/C gene promoter polymorphisms and their haplotypes variants are associated with risk of various cancers. We evaluated a possible association of IL-18 (-607) C/A and (-137) G/C gene promoter polymorphisms in the susceptibility to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A total number of 272 patients with OSCC and 185 healthy volunteers were genotyped for the IL-18 (-607) C/A and (-137) G/C polymorphism. Polymorphism variants were examined by using tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system (T-ARMS). Genotype frequencies were evaluated by chi-square test and odds ratio (OR) relative risk. IL-18 (-137) G/C gene polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of OSCC as compared to healthy volunteers (genotype GG vs GC: OR 2.238; 95 % CI 1.455-3.441; p = 0.0003 and allele G vs C: OR 1.984; 95 % CI 1.335-2.947; p = 0.0007). The genotype and allele frequencies of the IL-18 promoter -607 C/A polymorphism in OSCC patients were not significantly different than that in healthy controls (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that IL-18 -137 G/C polymorphism is significantly associated with the progression of oral cancer but -607 C/A polymorphism is not associated with this.

RESUMO

Background General anesthesia (GA) is a standard for breast malignant surgery. The issue of postoperative pain as well as the high occurrence of nausea and vomiting have prompted the quest for a superior methodology for tormenting the executives with fewer complications. Over the most recent couple of years, paravertebral block (PVB) has acquired huge fame either in combination with GA or alone for anesthetic management. In this study, we aim to evaluate the efficacy of morphine and clonidine as an adjunct to ropivacaine in PVB in breast cancer patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy. Methods In this study, a total of 90 patients were divided into the following three groups (30 each) based on a computer-generated random table. Group C (control): PVB with 0.25% ropivacaine (19 ml) 1 ml saline; Group M: PVB with 0.25% ropivacaine (19 ml) + 20 microgram/kg body weight morphine; Group N: PVB with 0.25% ropivacaine (19 ml) + 1.0 microgram/kg body weight clonidine. The postoperative pain intensity was recorded using the visual analog scale (VAS), and sedation was observed by the Ramsay Sedation Scale (RSS) score. Results The VAS was similar at zero hours, two hours, and four hours in the postoperative period among all the groups. There was a significant (p = 0.003) difference in VAS from six hours to 20 hours in the postoperative period among the groups. A significant (p < 0.05) difference was observed among the groups at eight hours to 20 hours. The first requirement of analgesia was significantly (p = 0.001) higher in Group N (7.70 ± 1.74) than in Group C (4.43 ± 1.43) and Group M (7.33 ± 2.21). Conclusion Morphine in the PVB provides better postoperative analgesia. The consumption of rescue analgesia was significantly reduced in the morphine group as compared to the clonidine group. The procedure also proved to be safe as no complication was encountered in the PVB in our study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this clinical study is to compare the efficacy of adding dexamethasone or clonidine as an adjuvant drug to levobupivacaine in supraclavicular brachial plexus block (BPB) with regard to the onset and duration of sensory and motor blocks along with duration of postoperative analgesia. BACKGROUND:  Brachial plexus block (BPB), with or without general anesthesia, has been used widely for multiple upper limb surgical procedures, by virtue of its efficacy in terms of cost-effectiveness, efficiency, safety margins, and good postoperative analgesia. Various adjuvant drugs have been described to potentiate the analgesic effect of local anesthetic agents such as epinephrine, clonidine, dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine, or midazolam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind study in which a total of 90 American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) physical status I and II patients of either sex, aged between 18 and 60 years, were scheduled for elective upper limb surgical procedures under supraclavicular BPB. They were divided into three equivalent randomized groups with 30 patients in each group. The patients were administered either normal saline 2 mL (in group L) or clonidine 0.5 mcg/kg body weight (in group LC) or dexamethasone 8 mg (in group LD) with 30 mL of 0.5% levobupivacaine. The time of onset and duration of sensory and motor blockades along with the time duration of analgesia were compared. RESULTS: All groups were equivalent as per demographic data. The time duration for onset of sensory and motor blocks was comparable among all three included groups (12.77±2.60 minutes and 20.80±3.25 minutes, 15.93±2.08 minutes and 22.43±3.07 minutes, and 12.57±2.62 minutes and 22.47±3.10 minutes for group L, LC, and LD, respectively). The time duration of analgesia and motor blockade was significantly prolonged in the dexamethasone group (1195.33±50.01 minutes and 1173.17±43.57 minutes) and moderately prolonged in the clonidine group (696.33±36.74 minutes and 674.67±34.33 minutes) when compared to levobupivacaine group (416.33±35.98 minutes and 397.00±35.12 minutes), and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). CONCLUSION:  Dexamethasone appears to be a superior adjuvant drug to clonidine for brachial plexus block via supraclavicular approach as it provides prolonged duration of motor block with lesser requirement of postoperative analgesia and lack of adverse effects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding tuberculosis (TB) and DOTS among young medical graduates (interns). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Lady Hardinge Medical College and Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India, during November and December 2002, simultaneously. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire consisting of 30 items was administered to the young medical graduates/interns posted in different departments. The questions covered mode of transmission, symptoms of pulmonary TB, investigations, short course chemotherapy including DOTS as well as conventional anti-tubercular treatment, special situations, health education and chemoprophylaxis. RESULTS: A total of 287 interns were surveyed. Majority of the study subjects (92.7%) ranked DOTS strategy as more successful for treating tuberculosis in comparison to self-administered therapy. However, a mere 4.2% study subjects were aware of all modes of transmission. One hundred and eighty-nine (65.9%) correctly chose sputum examination for acid fast bacilli as the single most confirmatory test for diagnosing pulmonary TB. The rest either gave incorrect responses (including ELISA-17.0%, PCR-9.8%, X-ray chest-4.2%, ESR-1.7%) or did not respond (1.4%). Only 2.1% marked pyrazinamide and rifampicin as the agents to be avoided in patients with liver disease. One hundred and forty-one different treatment regimens were mentioned in the responses received and of those only 11(7.8%) were scientifically acceptable. CONCLUSION: TB is a major health problem in South-East Asian countries. There is a need for appropriate changes to be made in the undergraduate medical teaching/training curriculum in the concerned countries with regard to TB.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a pleiotropic cytokine with either immunosuppressive or immunostimulative activities. It has been reported that in cancer, the promoter region polymorphism of IL-10 (-A592C) alters both the expression and serum levels of this cytokine. In the present study, we have addressed the question as to whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at positions -592 A/C in the IL-10 gene promoter, could predispose an individual to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). DESIGN: We analyzed the genotype of the IL-10 (-A592C) gene, in 250 histopathologically confirmed OSCC patients and similar number of healthy volunteers taken as controls, in an Indian population by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Allele and genotype frequencies were analyzed by the Student's t-test and the chi-squared test, and strength of associations by the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: The genotype and allele distribution of IL-10 (-A592C) gene polymorphism was significantly different between OSCC cases and controls (genotype AA vs AC: OR 2.87; 95 % CI 1.50-5.48; p=0.0016 and AA vs CC: OR 4.08; 95 % CI 1.98-8.41; p=0.0002). The -592 C alleles were found to be significantly different among OSCC cases and controls (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.12-1.85, p<0.0051). CONCLUSIONS: The IL-10 gene promoter region (-592) A/C polymorphism is significantly associated with reduced risk of OSCC. The OSCC group had a significantly greater frequency of genotype AA as compared to control group.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to correlate thromboelastography (TEG) variables versus conventional coagulation profile in all patients presenting with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and to see whether TEG would be helpful for evaluating coagulation in parturients before regional anaesthesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study on 100 pre-eclampsia/eclampsia patients undergoing lower-segment caesarean section under regional anaesthesia. Two blood samples were collected. First sample was used for TEG measurement and second sample for laboratory tests. The following TEG data were obtained-reaction time, kinetic time, alpha angle, and maximum amplitude (MA). The following laboratory tests were obtained-haematology (haemoglobin, TLC, DLC, platelet count) and coagulation test [prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time (TT)]. RESULT: Out of 100 patients enrolled in the study, 80 (80 %) had a normal coagulation profile, while remaining 20 (20 %) had hypocoagulation profile. The results show that TEG parameters have a good correlation with conventional coagulation profile and also showed excellent independent predictive efficacy for prediction of hypocoagulation. PT, aPTT, and TT were directly proportional to R-time and K-time and inversely proportional to alpha angle (p < 0.001). Platelet count showed a strong positive correlation with MA (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: By giving a global picture of haemostasis, TEG can lead to improved decision-making about safety of using regional anaesthesia. Its fast feedback time makes it ideal for monitoring in a fast moving situation such as in obstetric emergency.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Multimodal analgesia includes regional anaesthesia in the form of nerve block may improve recovery along with optimal rehabilitation and early resumption of day-to-day activity following major surgery. Conventional general anaesthesia consists of premedication, induction, intubation and maintenance. AIM: The aim of the study is to compare the multimodal versus conventional approach in oral cancer surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were randomly allocated into three groups, 30 patients in each group using the computer generated random table to one of the following groups: Group A: Fentanyl 1 µg/kg, Group B: Fentanyl 1 µg/kg + bupivacaine local infiltration, Group C: Fentanyl 1 µg/kg + bupivacaine local infiltration + Dexemedetomidine infusion (Loading 0.5 µg/kg, Maintenance 0.2µg/kg/hr). RESULTS: No significant (p>0.05) difference was found in mean arterial pressure and heart rate at different time intervals among the groups. The VAS was lower in Group C than Group B and A. The ramsay sedation scale was higher in Group C than Group B and A. The rescue analgesic for 24 hour was lower in Group C than Group B and A. The time of first time analgesia requirement was significantly (p=0.001) higher in Group C than Group B and A. The rescue analgesic was significantly (p=0.001) lower in Group C (39.29±19.67) than Group B (68.33±18.49) and A (160.83±35.16). CONCLUSION: Multimodal analgesia has beneficial haemodynamic effects during oral cancer surgery with reliable postoperative analgesia and sedation and less postoperative complication. Dose of drugs used in our study is not associated with any major adverse effect.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) encodes a cytokine protein, which causes inflammation, maintains immune homeostasis and plays an essential role in oral pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between IL-6 (- 174 and - 572) G/C promoter gene polymorphisms and risk of OSCC among Indians. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphism in IL-6 genes was genotyped in OSCC patients and healthy controls by PCR-RFLP method. Genotype and allele frequencies were analyzed by chi-square test and strength of associations by odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Frequency distribution of IL-6 (- 174) G/C gene polymorphism was significantly associated with OSCC patients in comparison to healthy controls (OR: 0.541, CI: 0.356-0.822; p: 0.004. However, frequency of IL-6 (- 572) G/C gene polymorphism was not significantly associated with OSCC patients (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The genotype GC and allele C of IL-6 (- 174) G/C gene polymorphism play a significant role in OSCC susceptibility.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pro-inflammatory cytokines play an essential role in immune response and are involved in a variety of inflammatory and infectious disease. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) gene polymorphism has been a potential determinant of susceptibility to various types of cancer. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of TNF-α gene promoter (-238) G/A and (-308) G/A polymorphisms with the susceptibility of OSCC patients in North Indian population. METHODS: A total 272 patients with OSCC and 185 healthy volunteers were genotypes for the TNF-α (-238) G/A and (-308) G/A gene polymorphism. Genotypes were identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Genotype frequencies were evaluated by Chi-square test and Odds ratio (OR) relative risk. RESULTS: TNF-α (-238) G/A polymorphism was significantly associated with OSCC patients as compared to healthy volunteers (GG vs. GA: OR=0.3500, 95% CI=0.1289-09502; p=0.036; G vs. A: OR=0.3589 1.477, 95% CI=0.1335-0.9652; p=0.0386). No significant association was found in TNF-α (-308) G/A gene polymorphism with OSCC patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the TNF-α (-238) G/A polymorphism was significantly associated with OSCC however TNF-α (-308) G/A polymorphism was not associated in OSCC patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hyperbaric ropivacaine produce more reliable sensory and motor block, with faster onset, better quality of muscles relaxation than isobaric ropivacaine. So, this study was designed to compare the efficacy of hyperbaric ropivacaine with isobaric ropivacaine in patients undergoing lower abdominal surgery. METHODS: A randomized controlled double blind study in two groups of patients. group A (n=35) received 3 ml of isobaric ropivacaine 6 mg/ml (18 mg). Group B (n=35) received 3 ml of hyperbaric ropivacaine 6 mg/ml (18 mg). The onset and duration of sensory block at dermatome level T10, maximum upper and lower spread of sensory block, intensity, and duration of motor block were recorded. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Block characteristics were compared using the two-tailed Mann - Whitney U-test. The proportion of side effects was compared using the Chi-square test. RESULTS: The median time of onset of sensory block at the T10 dermatome was 4.4±1.3 min in group B and 6.0±1.03 min in group A. The median time to maximum block height was 16.7±3.7 min in group A and 12.03±1.96 min in group B. The median duration of complete motor recovery (B0) was significantly shorter in the heavy ropivacaine group (166.5±11.7 min) compared with the isobaric ropivacaine group (192.9±9.6 min). CONCLUSIONS: Intrathecal hyperbaric ropivacaine provides more rapid, adequate, and good quality of sensory and motor block with rapid post-operative recovery as compare to isobaric ropivacaine.

RESUMO

Hydatid disease mostly caused by Echinococcus granulosus is a common parasitic infestation of the liver. Most common sites are liver (70%) and lungs (25%). Intraperitoneal hydatid cyst is found in 13% and it is usually secondary to rupture of primary hepatic cyst. Primary intraperitoeal hydatid cyst is rare (2%). Primary hydatid cyst in mesentery is very rare. In this article, the author presents a case of primary mesenteric hydatid cyst with chronic pain in lower abdomen.

RESUMO

Epidermoid and dermoid cysts represent less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. We describe a rare case of large epidermoid cyst in floor of mouth, with an oral as well as submental component resembling plunging ranula reported in the literature from India. We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with complaints of a mass in sublingual region, difficulty chewing, and dysphagia for about 5 months. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed keratin flakes and proteinaceous material. Contrast-enhanced CT oral cavity was done and showed 7.0 × 5 × 4.5 cm well-circumscribed non-enhancing cystic mass extending into the floor of the mouth. On examination, a firm swelling was noticed in the submental area, extending down to the thyroid notch. The patient underwent surgical removal of the mass. On histopathology, acidophilic stratum corneum and basophilic dot like staining of stratum granulosum, which is the hallmark of an epidermoid cyst, were seen.

RESUMO

Ectopic thyroid glands generally occur in the midline as a result of abnormal median migration. The presence of these ectopic glands, lateral to the midline is rare. Here, the authors present one case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid arising from an ectopic thyroid tissue in branchial cleft cyst presented as a swelling in lateral neck diagnosed after cystectomy. Total thyroidectomy and neck dissection were done to rule out occult primary carcinoma of thyroid. Histopathology report showed thyroid and lymph nodes were normal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: 80% of patients undergoing surgical procedures experience postoperative pain1 and requires adequate pain relief. Nowadays drugs like COX2 inhibitors and calcium channel modulators (Pregabalin and Gabapentin) are been increasingly used for postoperative pain management effectively. We conducted this study to find whether preoperative pregabalin has any effect in postoperative analgesic requirement in patients undergoing hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia. PATIENTS #ENTITYSTARTX00026; METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in 150 patients undergoing hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia, divided in three groups - Group I (PO) - Control group, Group II (P150) received 150 mg pregabalin and Group III (P300) received 300 mg pregabalin. We used VAS for anxiety, Ramsay sedation scale and VAS for patient satisfaction regarding pain relief. RESULTS: There was significant reduction in anxiety in groups P (150) and P (300) than placebo group P (0) during intraoperative and postoperative period than preoperative period. There was significant sedation seen in groups P (150) and P (300) than placebo group P (0). First rescue analgesia in group P (300) was202.42±6.77 and in group P (150) was176.38±4.80on average, group P (0) was131.38±5.15. Dizziness was 44.44% in group P (300), 36.11% in group P (150), and 19.44% in group P (0). Patient satisfaction was better in P (300) group than other two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Pregabalin being an oral drug which would be easy for the patients to take and also its prolongation of the neuraxial block helps in immediate postoperative analgesia and further reduction of other parentral analgesics. Pregabalin 150mg would be the optimal preemptive dose for hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spinal anaesthesia is the most common approach which is used for lower limb surgery. Dexmedetomidine is the recent drug which acts on α2-adrenergic receptors in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord to produce analgesic effects. AIM: Efficacy and safety of intrathecal dexmedetomidine added to ropivacaine. SETTING AND DESIGN: Randomised double blind trial. METHODS: Sixty patients were randomly allocated to receive intrathecally either 3 ml of 0.75% isobaric ropivacaine + 0.5 ml normal saline (Group R) or 3 ml of 0.75% isobaric ropivacaine + 5 µg dexmedetomidine in 0.5 ml of normal saline (Group D). RESULTS: The mean time of sensory regression to S2 was 468.3±36.78 minutes in group D and 239.33±16.8 minutes in group R. Duration of analgesia (time to requirement of first rescue analgesic) was significantly prolonged in group D (478.4±20.9 minutes) as compared to group R (241.67±21.67 minutes). The maximum visual analogue scale score for pain was less in group D (4.4±1.4) as compared to group R (6.8±2.2). CONCLUSION: The addition of dexmedetomidine to ropivacaine intrathecally produces a prolongation in the duration of the motor and sensory block.

RESUMO

Tubercular stricture of small bowel is a common cause of subacute intestinal obstruction in India. In a small subset of patients the cause of the intestinal obstruction could be adenocarcinoma of jejunum. It is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. The point of concern is compared to tubercular stricture, the treatment of jejunal adenocarcinoma is always surgical in the form of cancer directed surgery. The operating surgeon needs to have a very high suspicion for jejunal adenocarcinoma because the timely treatment offers the best survival in otherwise an aggressive disease with bleak prognosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Various adjuvants have been used with local anesthetics in spinal anesthesia to avoid intraoperative visceral and somatic pain and to provide prolonged postoperative analgesia. Dexmedetomidine, the new highly selective α2-agonist drug, is now being used as a neuraxial adjuvant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the onset and duration of sensory and motor block, hemodynamic effect, postoperative analgesia, and adverse effects of dexmedetomidine or fentanyl given intrathecally with hyperbaric 0.5% bupivacaine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients classified in American Society of Anesthesiologists classes I and II scheduled for lower abdominal surgeries were studied. Patients were randomly allocated to receive either 12.5 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine plus 5 µg dexmedetomidine (group D, n = 30) or 12.5 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine plus 25 µg fentanyl (group F, n = 30) intrathecal. RESULTS: Patients in dexmedetomidine group (D) had a significantly longer sensory and motor block time than patients in fentanyl group (F). The mean time of sensory regression to S1 was 476±23 min in group D and 187±12 min in group F (P<0.001). The regression time of motor block to reach modified Bromage 0 was 421±21 min in group D and 149±18 min in group F (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Intrathecal dexmedetomidine is associated with prolonged motor and sensory block, hemodynamic stability, and reduced demand for rescue analgesics in 24 h as compared to fentanyl.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of psychosocial factors (lack of social support, stress and subjective well-being) and personality traits with myocardial infarction (MI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study involving 100 cases and 100 matched controls was conducted in Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi. RESULTS: Stress over 1 year was significantly higher in cases (P < 0.001). However, difference was not significant when scores of social support (P = 0.2), Presumptive Stressful Life Event (PSLE) over lifetime (P = 0.058) and subjective well-being (P = 0.987) were compared. MI was significantly associated with hyperactive (P < 0.001), dominant (P = 0.03), egoistic (P < 0.001) and introvert (P < 0.001) personalities. CONCLUSION: Certain personality traits and recent stress may be important risk factors of MI, especially in Indians. The finding may have implications on the preventive strategies planned for MI patients.
