Here, we fed bed bugs through a membrane contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at a concentration naturally present on human skin. We then determined the amount of viable MRSA present on their surface and internally over a period of 7 days. We also determined whether bed bugs that fed through the contaminated membrane could transmit MRSA to an uncontaminated membrane when taking a second blood meal 7 days later. Bed bugs acquired MRSA both externally on the cuticle surface as well as internally when feeding. MRSA was found to persist for 7 days both externally and internally in some bed bugs. Furthermore, MRSA replicated internally but not externally. Most importantly, bed bugs were able to transmit MRSA to an uncontaminated membrane feeder in 2 of 3 trials. These findings provide the first experimental support for the hypothesis that bed bugs may contribute to the transmission of MRSA in some settings.

AIM: The current study aimed to: (1) systematically review the published literature regarding the proteomics analyses of saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in healthy humans and gingivitis and/or periodontitis patients; and (2) to identify the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) based on the systematic review, and comprehensively conduct meta-analyses and bioinformatics analyses. METHODS: An online search of Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed was performed without any restriction on the year and language of publication. After the identification of the DEPs reported by the included human primary studies, gene ontology (GO), the Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway (KEGG), protein-protein interaction (PPI), and meta-analyses were conducted. The risk of bias among the included studies was evaluated using the modified Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. RESULTS: The review identified significant differences in protein expression between healthy individuals and those with gingivitis and periodontitis. In GCF, 247 proteins were upregulated and 128 downregulated in periodontal diseases. Saliva analysis revealed 79 upregulated and 70 downregulated proteins. There were distinct protein profiles between gingivitis and periodontitis, with 159 and 31 unique upregulated proteins in GCF, respectively. Meta-analyses confirmed significant upregulation of various proteins in periodontitis, including ALB and MMP9, while CSTB and GSTP1 were downregulated. AMY1A and SERPINA1 were upregulated in periodontitis saliva. HBD was upregulated in gingivitis GCF, while DEFA3 was downregulated. PPI analysis revealed complex networks of interactions among DEPs. GO and KEGG pathway analyses provided insights into biological processes and pathways associated with periodontal diseases. CONCLUSION: The ongoing MS-based proteomics studies emphasize the need for a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool for periodontal diseases. Clinician acceptance of the eventual diagnostic method relies on its ability to provide superior or complementary information to current clinical assessment procedures. Future research should prioritize the multiplex measurement of multiple biomarkers simultaneously to enhance diagnostic accuracy and large study cohorts are necessary to ensure the validity and reliability of research findings.

BACKGROUND: This paper discusses the stages of health system resilience (HSR) and the factors underlying differences in HSR during the covid-19 pandemic, especially the vaccination challenge. We studied the relationship between vaccination strategies and macro-context backgrounds in 21 Latin American countries. Our objective was to capture the impact of those aspects in the SR and identify potential improvements for future crises and for vaccination programs in general. METHODS: The study uses mixed-methods research to provide insights into how the countries' backgrounds and vaccination strategies impact the HSR. Particularly, we used explanatory sequential mixed methods, which entails a quantitative-qualitative two-phase sequence. The quantitative phase was conducted using cluster and variance analysis, in which the HSR was measured using as a proxy the covid-19 vaccination outcomes in three cut-offs of reaching 25%, 50%, and 75% of population coverage. This approach allows us to discriminate covid-19 vaccination progress by stages and contrast it to the qualitative stage, in which we performed a country-case analysis of the background conditions and the changes in vaccination strategies that occurred during the corresponding dates. RESULTS: The paper provides a rich comparative case analysis of countries, classifying them by early, prompt, and delayed performers. The results show that differences in vaccination performance are due to flexibility in adapting strategies, cooperation, and the ability to design multilevel solutions that consider the needs of various actors in the health ecosystem. These differences vary depending on the vaccination stage, which suggests the importance of acknowledging learning, diffusion, and feedback processes at the regional level. CONCLUSIONS: We identified the importance of societal well-being as an ideal country antecedent for high and sustained levels of performance in covid-19 vaccination. Whereas in other countries where the set-up and beginning phases were rough, the value of the operational decisions and the learning on the move regarding their own and their peers' trajectories were crucial and were reflected in performance improvement. A contribution of this study is that the above-mentioned analysis was done using vaccination coverage cut-off points that allow a performance view that takes into consideration the stages of the vaccination progress and the learning process that goes with it. As well as framing this into the HSR shock cycles that allow to differentiate the stages of resilience on which countries must act.

This study aimed to evaluate long-term exposure to conventional cigarette smoke (CC) and electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol in adult male and female C57BL/6 mice. Forty-eight C57BL/6 mice were used, male (n = 24) and female (n = 24), both were divided into three groups: control, CC and EC. The CC and EC groups were exposed to cigarette smoke or electronic cigarette aerosol, respectively, 3 times a day for 60 consecutive days. Afterwards, they were maintained for 60 days without exposure to cigarettes or electronic cigarette aerosol. Both cigarettes promoted an influx of inflammatory cells to the lung in males and females. All animals exposed to CC and EC showed an increase in lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. There was an increase of IL-6 in males and females exposed to EC. The IL-13 levels were higher in the females exposed to EC and CC. Both sexes exposed to EC and CC presented tissue damage characterized by septal destruction and increased alveolar spaces compared to control. Our results demonstrated that exposure to CC and EC induced pulmonary emphysema in both sexes, and females seem to be more susceptible to EC.

Low-intensity resistance training improves flow-mediated dilation in young hispanic adults. J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 298-304, 2023-The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 resistance exercise training (RET) intensities on brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) in sedentary males. Thirty-four men (age = 20.6 ± 1.8 years, height = 171.3 ± 5.2 cm, body mass = 65.2 ± 10.6 kg, and DXA fat mass = 22.3 ± 7.4%) were randomly assigned to a control group (no exercise CTRL, n = 12), RET at 50% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) (RET50%, n = 12), and RET at 80% 1RM (RET80%, n = 10). The RET program was performed twice per week for 8 weeks; subjects performed the same RET exercises at similar total workloads (1920 arbitrary units [AUs] for the RET80% and 1950 AUs for the RET50%). The FMD% was measured before and after 8 weeks by ultrasound. Mixed factorial analysis of variance (3 groups × 2 measurements), effect size (ES), and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were computed for FMD%. The level of significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. A significant increase ( p = 0.001) was found on post-test FMD% in RET50% (mean = 9.9 ± 3.7%, ES = 1.9, and 95% CIs = 2.8-0.9) compared with CTRL (mean = 5.7 ± 1.7%, ES = 0.2, and 95% CIs = -0.4 to 0.8), and there were no significant differences found between RET50% and RET80% and between RET80% and CTRL. Results support the concept of training specificity and provide preliminary evidence that lower resistance and higher repetition RET elicit greater short-term reduced endothelium dysfunction than higher intensity RET at similar training volume.

Water stress is a current environmental menace mainly driven by over exploitation of aquifers, which is triggering poor water quality with high concentration of minerals in extracted groundwater. Particularly, silica is widespread in natural water supplies due to weathering processes of silicates occurring in contact with water, light, air, and other factors. However, due to groundwater over extraction the concentration of silica has increased during the last years in aquifer reservoirs from Aguascalientes State (México). In this context, it is very important to note that the removal of silica compounds from water is challenging and different methods can be used to avoid embedding problems in different industries. In the present work, the removal of reactive silica from synthetic solutions as well as from real wastewaters from an industrial anodizing process was studied using adsorption and chemical precipitation methods. Twelve commercial materials of different nature were used for adsorption tests, while seven precipitant agents were applied in the precipitation experiments. Adsorption tests were performed in batch systems with constant stirring at 30 °C and at different pH values (7 and 9). Precipitation experiments were carried out in batch systems and the best conditions for silica removal were found using an L9 orthogonal array of the Taguchi method employing molar ratio, pH of wastewater, stirring time and temperature as experimental factors. Adsorption results showed that Ferrolox (Iron (III) hydroxide-base adsorbent) was the most efficient sorbent for reactive silica removal from synthetic solutions and the anodizing wastewater. Also, the reactive silica adsorption was higher at pH 9 as compared to that measured at pH 7 and the adsorbed quantity at pH 9 was 16.22 and 11.25 mg/g for the synthetic solution and anodizing wastewater, respectively. According to molecular simulation, the main interaction between Ferrolox and silica species was related to the formation of hydroxo-complexes and to the interaction of Fe with oxygen of silica species. Additionally, magnesium chloride was the best precipitating reagent for reactive silica achieving up to 87% removal. According to ANOVA analysis of Taguchi method, pH was the most influential factor during the precipitation of reactive silica with a variance value of 81.42, while values lower than 3 were obtained for the rest of parameters. Overall, the present work is reporting for the first time the removal of reactive silica from anodizing wastewaters with promising results that can be implemented at full scale for water reclamation, which may significantly contribute to manage water reservoir in the region sustainably.

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) is a human pathogen that causes a wide range of diseases. For successful colonization within a variety of host niches, GAS must sense and respond to environmental changes. Intercellular communication mediated by peptides is one way GAS coordinates gene expression in response to diverse environmental stressors, which enhances bacterial survival and contributes to virulence. Using peptidomics we identified SpoV (Streptococcal peptide controlling virulence) in culture supernatant fluids. SpoV is a secreted peptide encoded near the gene encoding the extracellular cholesterol-dependent cytolysin streptolysin O (slo) The addition of synthetic SpoV peptide derivatives, but not control peptides, increased slo transcript abundance in an M49 isolate but not in an M3 isolate. Deletion of spoV decreased slo transcript abundance, extracellular SLO protein levels, and SLO-specific hemolytic activity. Complementation of the spoV mutant increased slo transcript abundance. Lastly, a spoV mutant was deficient in the ability to survive in murine blood compared to the parental strain. Moreover, pre-incubation of the spoV mutant with synthetic SpoV peptide derivatives increased GAS survival. Our findings show that slo expression is regulated, in part, by the GAS-specific signaling peptide SpoV.IMPORTANCEGAS secretes signaling peptides that can alter gene expression and impact virulence. We used peptidomics to identify a signaling peptide designated SpoV. Further, we showed that SpoV altered the expression of the cholesterol-dependent cytolysin SLO. Peptide signaling plays an important regulatory role during disease progression among several bacterial pathogens, including GAS. The therapeutic potential of manipulating peptide-controlled regulatory networks is an attractive option for the development of novel therapeutic strategies that disrupt virulence gene expression.

Anodizing wastewater contains principally phosphate (PO43-) anions according to previous studies, but with the purpose to promote water reuse in this type of industry, a complete characterization of wastewater was made to remove other anions and cations also present in significant concentration. Particularly, the adsorption of sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), fluoride (F-), sulfate (SO42-) and phosphate (PO43-) was studied using different sorbents such as: coconut shell activated carbon, bone char, bituminous coal activated carbon, natural zeolite, silica, anionic and cationic exchange resins, a coated manganese-calcium zeolite, coconut shell activated carbon containing iron and iron hydroxide. All sorbents were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K, X-ray diffraction and SEM/EDX analysis to study the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption studies were performed in batch systems under constant agitation using both standard solutions of each ion and real anodizing wastewater. Results showed that, in general, the adsorption of all anions and cations is higher when mono-component standard solutions were used, since in the anodizing wastewater all species are competing for the active sites of the adsorbent. Na+ present in anodizing wastewater was efficiently adsorbed on coated manganese-calcium zeolite (20.55 mg/g) and natural zeolite (18.55 mg/g); while K+ was poorly adsorbed on all sorbents (less than 0.20 mg/g). Anions such as F-, SO42- and PO43-, were better adsorbed on the anionic resin (0.17, 45.38 and 2.92 mg/g, respectively), the iron hydroxide (0.14, 7.96 and 2.87 mg/g, respectively) and the bone char (0.34, 8.71 and 0.27 mg/g, respectively). All these results suggest that adsorption is a promising tertiary treatment method to achieve water reuse in the anodizing industry.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cerebral hemodynamics arises from cardiovascular damage mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction, arterial wall increased stiffness, high thickness of the intimate index of the internal carotid artery, left ventricular hypertrophy, left diastolic dysfunction, calcification coronary arteries and increased epicardial fat. The multidirectional relationship between systemic inflammation and lipid metabolism constitutes a common and simultaneous mechanism that causes vascular damage. This study aims to provide insight into the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the function of systemic circulation and cerebral circulation using Doppler ultrasound. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Is an observational, cross-sectional, prospective, comparative study conducted at Medica Sur Hospital. Thirty-five patients were selected consecutively. The patients consulted neurological service for various symptoms without severity criteria, such as vertigo, primary headache and balance disturbances. RESULTS: There is a difference in the variables mean of the right MCA PI (p = 0.023), left MCA PI" (p = 0.004), and left VA PI (p = 0.036) between the control and NAFLD groups. The correlation analysis between these variables and the CAP showed a positive correlation of the three variables with the CAP, "right MCA PI" (r = 0.384), left MCA PI "(r = 0.509) and" left VA PI " (r = 0.551). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates a subclinical process of the middle cerebral artery in subjects with NAFLD, which suggests it may be involved in the disease development and points the need to make decisions for this liver manifestation prevention and treatment.

BACKGROUND: The aesthetic self-perception and psychosocial impact of whitening is poorly explored in the literature; it is even less clear whether the effect of whitening may influence the psychology or social relations of patients. Therefore, the aim of this trial is to evaluate the impact of an at-home whitening procedure on patients' quality of life. Also, this study's secondary objective is the adaptation and validation of the Spanish version of the OES questionnaire (OES-SP). METHODS: Fifty eight patients underwent whitening with 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) gel for 1 h daily for 3 weeks. For these participants, the OHIP-Esthetics, PIDAQ, and OES surveys were applied before, one week after, and one month after the whitening procedure. Oral health-related quality of life was measured using the OHIP-Esthetics survey and the psychosocial impact using the PIDAQ survey. The orofacial aesthetics was measured by OES and validated for the Spanish Chilean context. The treatment efficacy (ΔE and ΔSGU) and data from the OHIP-Esthetics PIDAQ and OES surveys were compared using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. RESULTS: The whitening procedure was effective (ΔE = 5.9 ± 1.8). The OHIP-Esthetics results were significant when comparing the initial baseline survey prior to the treatment and one week after whitening (p < 0.001) and when comparing the baseline and one-month results (p < 0.001). The overall score on the PIDAQ, after one week post-whitening, was separated into factors and all factors were statistically significant (p < 0.03); the factors for the one-month results were also all statistically significant (p < 0.001), except the social impact factor. The OES questionnaire had statistically significantly increased scores both one week and one month post-treatment (p < 0.0001). The reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the OES-SP were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The at-home whitening procedure with carbamide peroxide 10% had a positive effect on patients' oral health-related quality of life, psychology, and aesthetic perception after one month post-whitening. The Chilean Spanish version of the OES showed satisfactory psychometric characteristics to evaluate dental whitening. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02605239 . This analysis integrates poststructuralist and symbolic interactionist approaches to the self by incorporating the insights of science and technology studies regarding categorization processes. While the advent of the Internet has freed many individuals from geographical constraints on community formation, the architectures of online platforms produce a technological imperative to name aspects of the self with words. Using sexual identity hashtags on Instagram (e.g., #lesbian) thus performs paradoxical functions: the hashtag both enables the construction of a sexual identity within an affirming community and also reinforces the power relations that compel individuals to name and account for their sexual selves. By illustrating one way sexual identities function in the online lives of young women, this research complicates other scholars' findings that the salience of sexual identity categories is decreasing.

The mortality associated with influenza A virus (IAV) is often due to the development of secondary bacterial infections known as superinfections. The group A streptococcus (GAS) is a relatively uncommon cause of IAV superinfections, but the mortality of these infections is high. We used a murine model to determine whether the surface-localized GAS M protein contributes to the outcome of IAV-GAS superinfections. A comparison between wild-type GAS and an M protein mutant strain (emm3) showed that the M3 protein was essential to virulence. To determine whether the binding, or recruitment, of host proteins to the bacterial surface contributed to virulence, GAS was suspended with BALF collected from mice that had recovered from a sub-lethal infection with IAV. Following intranasal inoculation of naïve mice, the mortality associated with the wild-type strain, but not the emm3 mutant strain, was greater compared to mice inoculated with GAS suspended with either BALF from uninfected mice or PBS. Further analyses showed that both albumin and fibrinogen (Fg) were more abundant in the respiratory tract 8 days after IAV infection, that M3 bound both proteins to the bacterial surface, and that suspension of GAS with either protein increased GAS virulence in the absence of antecedent IAV infection. Overall, the results showed that M3 is essential to the virulence of GAS in an IAV superinfection and suggested that increased abundance of albumin and Fg in the respiratory tract following IAV infection enhanced host susceptibility to secondary GAS infection.

L-Dopa continues to be the gold drug in Parkinson's disease (PD) treatment from 1967. The failure to translate successful results from preclinical to clinical studies can be explained by the use of preclinical models which do not reflect what happens in the disease since these induce a rapid and extensive degeneration; for example, MPTP induces a severe Parkinsonism in only 3 days in humans contrasting with the slow degeneration and progression of PD. This study presents a new anatomy and develops preclinical model based on aminochrome which induces a slow and progressive dysfunction of dopaminergic neurons. The unilateral injection of aminochrome into rat striatum resulted in (1) contralateral rotation when the animals are stimulated with apomorphine; (2) absence of significant loss of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neuronal elements both in substantia nigra and striatum; (3) cell shrinkage; (4) significant reduction of dopamine release; (5) significant increase in GABA release; (6) significant decrease in the number of monoaminergic presynaptic vesicles; (7) significant increase of dopamine concentration inside of monoaminergic vesicles; (8) significant increase of damaged mitochondria; (9) significant decrease of ATP level in the striatum (10) significant decrease in basal and maximal mitochondrial respiration. These results suggest that aminochrome induces dysfunction of dopaminergic neurons where the contralateral behavior can be explained by aminochrome-induced ATP decrease required both for anterograde transport of synaptic vesicles and dopamine release. Aminochrome could be implemented as a new model neurotoxin to study Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the validity of the body adiposity index (BAI) in a sample of Costa Rican students. METHODS: Volunteers were 93 females (mean age = 18.6 ± 2.4 years) and 106 males (mean age = 19.2 ± 2.8 years). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the "gold standard" to determine body fat percentage (BF%). Pearson's correlation coefficient and paired samples t-test studied the association and mean differences between BAI and DXA BF%. Concordance between BAI and DXA BF% was determined by the Lin's concordance correlation coefficient and the Bland-Altman agreement analysis. RESULTS: Significant correlations between BAI and DXA BF% were found for females (r = 0.74) and males (r = 0.53) (P < 0.001). Differences between methods were found for females (BAI = 29.3 ± 4.1% vs. DXA = 36.5 ± 7.9%) and males (BAI = 24.8 ± 3.7% vs. DXA = 21.9 ± 8.6%; P < 0.001). Concordance was poor in females and males. Bland-Altman plots showed BAI underestimating and overestimating BF% in relation to the "gold standard" in females and males, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: BAI presented low agreement with BF% measured by DXA; therefore, BAI is not recommended for BF% prediction in this Central American sample studied. Am. J. Hum. Eugenol (mixed with zinc oxide powder) is widely used as direct capping material during pulp therapy in primary teeth. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of eugenol on diverse genes involved in inflammatory and cell apoptosis processes. The regulatory effect of eugenol on the expression of inflammation and apoptotic genes was evaluated in dental pulp fibroblasts from extracted third molars, cultured under concentration of eugenol of 13 µM. Eugenol allowed the expression of inflammatory and apoptotic genes when compared with positive and negative controls. Eugenol is a proinflammatory agent when it is in direct contact with healthy tissues and behaves as an anti-inflammatory agent in tissues undergoing inflammatory/apoptotic processes, as in cases of pulp inflammation in primary teeth. These findings are relevant for dentistry, when considering the application of safer pulp treatments to grossly carious children's teeth.

BACKGROUND: Traffic accidents are the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults in Chile. However, few studies have examined this behavior among this age group. Parental practices have a great influence on risk behaviors in adolescents, such as substance use, sexuality and violence, among others. Specifically, we propose that these practices will influence pedestrian risk behaviors among adolescents. AIM: To study the role of parental practices such as mother and father support, and behavioral control (monitoring and presence of rules) in pedestrian risk behaviors of teenagers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 470 adolescents attending schools in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile were studied. They answered a self-administered questionnaire in which they were asked about parental practices and pedestrian risk behaviors. Analyses were performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, using multiple regression. RESULTS: Paternal support and the presence of rules were protective factors for pedestrian risky behaviors. However, maternal support or monitoring did not influence these behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Parental practices influence pedestrian behaviors of teenagers. The study provides further evidence for the importance of these practices in the development of behavioral self-regulation.

RESUMO

Breaking bad news is a complex task that requires multiple communication skills from health professionals. Clinical practice demands to communicate all type of bad news, from a diagnosis of cancer to adverse effects of a treatment. On the other hand, since the beginning of the health reform in 2003, the need to improve the quality of services was proposed, among which the concern about the rights and duties of patients stands out. Therefore, the health care provider-patient relationship becomes again the subject of discussion and study, and a topic of great importance for clinical work. We revise the consequences of breaking bad news for the patient and for the health care provider, as well as the current protocols available for this purpose. The importance of developing communication skills both for future health professionals as for those who currently work in the area is emphasized.

Amaranth is a pseudocereal rich in macronutrients and micronutrients, with about 60 species cultivated worldwide. It is a high nutritional value food because of its many essential amino acids. Recent investigations demonstrate that the phytochemicals and extracts of amaranth have beneficial effects on health, including antidiabetic potential, a decrease in plasmatic cholesterol and blood pressure, and protection from oxidative stress and inflammation. Nowadays, type 2 diabetes has increased worldwide, becoming a problem of public health that makes it necessary to look for alternative strategies for its prevention and treatment. This review aims to summarize the antidiabetic potential of diverse species of the Amaranth genus. A bibliographical review was updated on the plant's therapeutic potential, including stem, leaves, and seeds, to know the benefits and potential as an adjuvant in treating and managing diabetes and associated pathologies (hypertension, dyslipidemia, and heart disease). This analysis contributes to the generation of knowledge about the therapeutic effects of amaranth, promoting the creation of new products, and the opportunity to conduct clinical trials to assess their safety and efficacy.

Premenstrual syndrome is a common disorder in women of reproductive age characterized by a variety of cyclical symptoms with a great impact on their lifestyle. Available pharmacological options include both antidepressants and oral contraceptives, both of which have side effects, are expensive and not always effective. Vitamins, minerals and plant extracts have been proven to alleviate the symptomatology of the premenstrual syndrome. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a commercial phytotherapeutic dietary supplement (PREMEN-CALM®: γ-aminobutyric acid, Rhodiola rosea L., Vitex agnus-castus, vitamin B6 and melatonin) as an alternative treatment for this condition. A randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled pilot study was performed. Participants (n = 42) were assessed before and after 3 months of taking the supplement (n = 21) or the placebo (n = 21). Outcome measures include antioxidant and inflammatory biomarkers, body composition, subjective sleep quality, mood state profile, quality of life, and certain characteristics of the menstrual cycle. The within-group analysis revealed a significant improvement in the total antioxidant status (1.49 ± 0.34 vs reference value 1, p = 0.002), mood state profile (p = 0.02), and affective symptoms (p = 0.01) in the women receiving the commercial phytotherapeutic dietary supplement PREMEN-CALM®. On the contrary, the between-group analysis showed no statistical differences, suggesting a plausible placebo effect. The phytotherapeutic supplement PREMEN-CALM® might be effective in treating or alleviating the symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome without adverse events. Integrative medicine approaches in the clinical practice may help improve the health of women suffering from this and other gynecological conditions.
