RESUMO

We have investigated cpDNA haplotype distribution in 24 populations of Fagus crenata in the southwest of Kanto District, Japan, and clarified the extent of intermixing of haplotypes in the contact zone by additional fine-scale analysis of two areas. Two cpDNA haplotypes belonging to different lineages were detected, and their distribution had geographical structure. Intermixed populations with the two haplotypes were limited to a narrow area. The geographical boundary between the haplotypes extended from Hakone to the west of the Kanto Mountains through the northern foot of Mt Fuji. No relationship was observed between the boundary location and the current topography of the southwest of Kanto District.

RESUMO

A new approach was needed to preserve the biodiversity of the Djoudj Park within a context marked by many constraints: drought, regulation of its hydrologic system, and anthropogenic pressure. The local management plan developed in this paper aims at the responsible management and fair distribution of the available water resources in the Djoudj Park to provide a balanced response to conservation issues and the growing needs of the local communities. The opposition between an administration determined to exercise its power and the confidence of local people weary of being stripped of their rights and cultural assets required the setting up of a consensual management plan. This plan would provide a means to determine the timing and the number of sluice gates to operate, based on an efficient command of the needs for water for each activity in the park and its surroundings. This tool will allow the park authority to take full cognizance of the needs and opinions of all interest groups but also their limits while keeping the essential functions of this wetland. It is also suggested that institutional and administrative reform be carried out to associate local populations in the definition and implementation of criteria for an integrated management of the Djoudj resources.

RESUMO

Brevetoxin-B (BTX-B), produced by the red tide organism, Gymnodium breve Davis, is the first member of marine polycyclic ethers to be structurally elucidated and one of the most potent neurotoxins. The structural feature is a trans-fused polycyclic ether ring system with 23 stereocenters. Its unique, complex structure and potent biological activity have attracted the attention of synthetic organic chemists. Total synthesis of BTX-B has been accomplished via the coupling of the ABCDEFG and IJK-ring segments, each ether ring of which was stereoselectively and efficiently constructed on the basis of SmI2-induced intramolecular cyclization, 6-endo-cyclization of hydroxy epoxide, ring-closing olefin metathesis, and SmI2-induced intramolecular Reformatsky-type reaction. Several kinds of double reactions at the left and right sides were efficiently used through the synthesis.
