RESUMO

Fascin actin-bundling protein 1 (Fascin) is highly expressed in a variety of cancers, including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), working as an important oncogenic protein and promoting the migration and invasion of cancer cells by bundling F-actin to facilitate the formation of filopodia and invadopodia. However, it is not clear how exactly the function of Fascin is regulated by acetylation in cancer cells. Here, in ESCC cells, the histone acetyltransferase KAT8 catalyzed Fascin lysine 41 (K41) acetylation, to inhibit Fascin-mediated F-actin bundling and the formation of filopodia and invadopodia. Furthermore, NAD-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin (SIRT) 7-mediated deacetylation of Fascin-K41 enhances the formation of filopodia and invadopodia, which promotes the migration and invasion of ESCC cells. Clinically, the analysis of cancer and adjacent tissue samples from patients with ESCC showed that Fascin-K41 acetylation was lower in the cancer tissue of patients with lymph node metastasis than in that of patients without lymph node metastasis, and low levels of Fascin-K41 acetylation were associated with a poorer prognosis in patients with ESCC. Importantly, K41 acetylation significantly blocked NP-G2-044, one of the Fascin inhibitors currently being clinically evaluated, suggesting that NP-G2-044 may be more suitable for patients with low levels of Fascin-K41 acetylation, but not suitable for patients with high levels of Fascin-K41 acetylation. © 2024 The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. INTRODUCTION: To investigated the safety and efficacy of emergency stenting for patients with ischemic stroke treated with bridging therapy. METHODS: Patients with onset of stroke who underwent bridging therapy were included in the two groups with emergency stenting (ESG) and without stenting (NSG). To avoid the bias due to confounding variables, subjects were further assigned in two groups using 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). The safety outcomes include the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), parenchymal hemorrhage type 2 (PH2), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), fatal hemorrhage, and mortality. The efficacy outcomes include successful recanalization, three-month favorable outcome (modified Rankin Scale [mRS]: 0-2). RESULTS: 175 patients treated with bridging therapy were included in this study, with 52 patients in the ES group and 123 patients in the groups without ES, and with 30 patients in each group after PSM. No significant differences in the incidences of ICH, PH2, sICH, fatal hemorrhage, and mortality were found between the two groups with ES and without ES before and after PSM (P>0.05 for all groups). The analysis without PSM showed that the group with ES had a higher rate of successful recanalization (98.1% vs. 81.6%,P=0.041) than the group without ES, but no significant difference was seen (96.6% vs. 93.3%,P=0.554) between the two groups after PSM. There was no difference in favorable outcome between the two groups before and after matching as well (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is safe and effective for patients with onset of ischemic stroke to receive emergency stenting during bridging therapy, without increasing the risk of hemorrhagic transformation and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Finding some convenient and economical indicators to initially screen overweight and obese patients at high risk of kidney stone recurrence can help them prevent stone recurrence with lower medical cost. The purpose of this article is to determine the clinical value of Ae index (Apo B × 1000/eGFR) as an independent predictor for kidney stone recurrence in overweight and obese populations. METHODS: We queried the electronic medical records of patients with kidney stone operated at our hospital from March 2016 to March 2022, and selected BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 as the study population and divided the patients into stone recurrence group and non-recurrence group. Relevant parameters of routine blood and biochemical test, glycated serum protein (GSP), and history of hypertension and hyperglycemia were collected. Then the Chi-square test, independent samples t-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test were used to calculate the differences between the two groups of data. Next, we performed univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis to screen out the most significant variables Apo B and eGFR, and then we calculated the Ae index using the formula Apo B × 1000/eGFR, and analyzed the relationship between Ae index and kidney stone recurrence. RESULTS: Univariate analysis found that Apo B (OR:8.376,95%CI:3.093-22.680), Creatinine (OR:1.012,95%CI:1.003-1.021), Cystatin C(OR:2.747,95%CI:1.369-5.508), LDL-C (OR:1.588,95%CI:1.182-2.134), TC (OR:1.543,95%CI:1.198-1.988) were positively associated, eGFR (OR:0.980,95%CI:0.970-0.991) was negatively associated with kidney stone recurrence. And multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that Apo B (OR:11.028, 95%CI:3.917-31.047) and eGFR (OR:0.976, 95%CI:0.965-0.988) were the most significant factors. Then we calculated Ae index and analyzed it, the sensitivity was 74.26% and the specificity was 60.00%, higher than either individual variable. Its smoothed curve revealed a non-linear relationship between them with the inflection point of 9.16. And the OR on the left side of the inflection point was 1.574 (95% CI: 1.228-2.018), whereas the OR on the right side of the inflection point was 1.088 (95% CI: 1.007-1.177). CONCLUSIONS: Ae index is an easily calculated and obtained index that has some predictive value for kidney stone recurrence in overweight and obese patients, which is of interest.

Income inequality is a critical issue of socio-economic development, particularly in rural areas where forest-dependent people are often vulnerable to the intervention of forest policies. This paper aims to elucidate income distribution and inequality of rural households influenced by China's largest reforestation policy implemented in early 2000s. Drawing on socioeconomic and demographic data from household surveys in two rural sites, we applied the Gini coefficient to measure income inequality and used a regression-based approach to examine the underlying factors that are associated with income generation among households. We also performed a mediation analysis to test the role of labor out-migration in shaping household income distribution under the reforestation policy. Results show that remittances sent by rural out-migrants substantially contribute to household income but tend to worsen inequality, particularly for households having retired cropland for reforestation. The inequality in total income depends on capital accumulation for land endowment and labor availability that render diversified livelihoods possible. Such linkage reveals regional disparity, which, along with policy-implementing institutions (e.g., rules for tree species choice for reforestation), can influence income generation from a given source (e.g., agriculture). Rural out-migration of female labor significantly mediates the economic benefits of the policy delivered to the households with an estimated mediating share of 11.7%. These findings add value to the knowledge of poverty-environment interrelationships in a sense that supporting rural livelihoods of the more vulnerable and underrepresented groups is essential for securing and sustaining the stewardship of forests. Policymaking for such forest restoration programs needs to integrate strategies for targeted or precise poverty alleviation to strengthen the conservation effectiveness.

Dysplasia and intramucosal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) frequently go unnoticed with white-light endoscopy and, therefore, progress to invasive tumors. If suitable targets are available, fluorescence molecular endoscopy might be promising to improve early detection. Microarray expression data of patient-derived normal esophagus (n = 120) and ESCC samples (n = 118) were analyzed by functional genomic mRNA (FGmRNA) profiling to predict target upregulation on protein levels. The predicted top 60 upregulated genes were prioritized based on literature and immunohistochemistry (IHC) validation to select the most promising targets for fluorescent imaging. By IHC, GLUT1 showed significantly higher expression in ESCC tissue (30 patients) compared to the normal esophagus adjacent to the tumor (27 patients) (p < 0.001). Ex vivo imaging of GLUT1 with the 2-DG 800CW tracer showed that the mean fluorescence intensity in ESCC (n = 17) and high-grade dysplasia (HGD, n = 13) is higher (p < 0.05) compared to that in low-grade dysplasia (LGD) (n = 7) and to the normal esophagus adjacent to the tumor (n = 5). The sensitivity and specificity of 2-DG 800CW to detect HGD and ESCC is 80% and 83%, respectively (ROC = 0.85). We identified and validated GLUT1 as a promising molecular imaging target and demonstrated that fluorescent imaging after topical application of 2-DG 800CW can differentiate HGD and ESCC from LGD and normal esophagus.

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) is increasingly used in developing countries to secure the sustainable provision of vital ecosystem services. The largest PES programs in the world are embedded in China's new forest policies, which aim to expand forest cover for soil and water conservation and improve livelihoods of rural people. The objective of this study is to identify the complex pathways of impacts of two PES programs - the Conversion of Cropland to Forest Program (CCFP) and the Ecological Welfare Forest Program (EWFP) - on household livelihood decisions, and to quantify the direct and indirect impacts along the identified pathways. We fulfill this objective by developing an integrated conceptual framework and applying a Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM), based on household survey data from Anhui, China. Labor allocation (for on-farm work, local paid work, local business, and out-migration) and land use decisions (i.e., rent in, maintain, rent out, or abandon cropland) for participating households are key to understand PES program effects on livelihoods. Results show that the PES programs have only small direct effects but significant indirect effects via the mediating factor of capital assets. Moreover, group heterogeneity analysis shows that lower-income households do not benefit any more than the better-off households from the PES, while households with medium wealth increase dependence on agriculture. In addition, household demographics, individual attributes, and geographic settings differ in their impacts on labor allocation and land use decisions. We conclude that CCFP and EWFP programs would be more efficient in conserving the environment while improving the economic welfare of lower-income households if capital assets were taken into account in the design of compensation schemes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of an early loading protocol of splinted implants with a fluoride-modified nanostructure surface and a tapered apex design for the therapy of posterior partial edentulism of mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seven implants were placed in the mandible of 45 subjects at three centres in China. A minimum of two and a maximum of three implants were placed in an edentulous region using a one-stage protocol. Each subject received a screw-retained, splinted and fixed permanent prosthesis 6-8 weeks after surgery. Marginal bone level (MBL) change, implant survival and soft tissue health were assessed at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after loading. A total of 92 implants from 40 subjects were recalled and investigated in this clinical trial. RESULTS: After three-year loading, the survival rate of implant was 100%. On a subject level, there was a mean (±SD) marginal bone gain of 0.23 ± 0.48 mm at 36-month recall and the change in MBL was statistically significant (p = .00061) compared with time of loading. On an implant level, the change in MBL was statistically significant (p = .03914, p = .01494, p = .00000) at 12, 24 and 36 months of loading compared with time of loading. CONCLUSION: Three-year data indicate that early loading protocol of splinted implants with a fluoride-modified nanostructure surface and a tapered apex design is feasible and safe for the therapy of partial edentulism in posterior mandible, which may contribute to bone gain when the suitable occlusal load and oral hygiene maintenance are kept.

INTRODUCTION: Breast reconstruction for Chinese patients is vastly different given cultural differences, patient preferences, access to resources, and insurance coverage in China. Given these unique factors, a different approach for optimizing outcomes should be considered. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients undergoing implant-based breast reconstruction from January 2013 to May 2016 was performed. Esthetic evaluations were made both by the patients and 1 nonoperative surgeon at least 6 months postoperative, and patient satisfaction was assessed using the Breast-Q. RESULTS: Overall, 135 patients undergoing 141 implant-based breast reconstructions were reviewed. The majority of implants (n = 134) were placed in a subpectoral position, whereas 7 were placed prepectorally, and no acellular dermal matrix was used. Given the limitations in acellular dermal matrix usage, soft-tissue coverage was augmented with local regional flaps. Ninety-four reconstructions (66.7%) used latissimus dorsi, 39 (27.7%) used serratus anterior, and 7 (5.0%) used mastectomy skin flaps only for implant coverage. Four patients (2.8%) underwent revision surgery to the reconstructed breasts. Grade III and grade IV capsular contracture was observed in 10 (7.1%) and 2 (1.4%) reconstructions, respectively. Both the patient's and the surgeon's satisfaction were higher than 80% in breast symmetry. CONCLUSIONS: Our implant selection method fit the Chinese population characteristics and could be extended to different types of implant-based breast reconstruction. It produced good esthetic outcomes and was reproducible, predictable, and simple to master in the clinical setting.

In the late 1990s, China initiated the Conversion of Croplands to Forest Program (CCFP) and the Ecological Welfare Forest Program (EWFP) based on the Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) principle. Positive socioeconomic outcomes of the programs are essential for the long-term success of eco-environment conservation. However, there is lack of understanding of their longer-term (over 10 years) impacts on rural livelihoods. In this paper, we examine income distribution and inequality of rural households under CCFP and EWFP in rural Anhui, China after 12 years of program implementation. Results show that CCFP-participating households have higher income inequality than non-participants, while the EWFP does not have an significant effect. Local off-farm work and out-migration with remittances are the two principal income sources and both add to inequality. A regression-based decomposition of inequality shows that the CCFP indirectly alters livelihoods by increasing out-migration with remittances, but it also adds to inequality from shifting livelihoods to non-agricultural activities. Meanwhile, EWFP payments positively affect agricultural incomes and contribute 16% to agricultural income inequality. Finally, human capital, natural capital and physical capital all play important roles in generating income and inequality, but the factors affecting inequality from agricultural and non-agricultural activities are different.

Glioma development is an extremely complex process with changes occurring in numerous genes. HOXD antisense growth-associated long noncoding RNA (HOXD-AS1), an important long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), is known to regulate metastasis-related gene expression in bladder cancer, ovarian cancer and neuroblastoma. Here, we elucidated the function and possible molecular mechanisms of lncRNA HOXD-AS1 in human glioma cells. Our results proved that HOXD-AS1 expression was upregulated in glioma tissues and in glioma cell lines. HOXD-AS1 overexpression promoted cell migration and invasion in vitro, whereas knockdown of HOXD-AS1 expression repressed these cellular processes. Mechanistic studies further revealed that HOXD-AS1 could compete with the transcription factor E2F8 to bind with miR-130a, thus affecting E2F8 expression. Additionally, reciprocal repression was observed between HOXD-AS1 and miR-130a, and miR-130a mediated the tumor-suppressive effects of HOXD-AS1 knockdown. Taken together, these results provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of HOXD-AS1 in glioma cells and offer important clues to understand the key roles of competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanisms in human glioma.

Accumulating studies have investigated the efficacy of receptor-mediated delivery of hydrophobic drugs in glioma chemotherapy. Here, a delivery vehicle comprising polyethylene glycol (PEG) and oxidized nanocrystalline mesoporous carbon particles (OMCN) linked to the Pep22 polypeptide targeting the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) is designed to generate a novel drug-loaded system, designated as OMCN-PEG-Pep22/DOX (OPPD). This system effectively targets glioma cells and the blood-brain barrier and exerts therapeutic efficacy through both near-infrared (NIR) photothermal and chemotherapeutic effects of loaded doxycycline (DOX). Pathological tissue microarrays show an association of LDLR overexpression in human glioma tissue with patient survival.NIR irradiation treatment and magnetic resonance imaging results show that OPPD reaches the effective glioma-killing temperature in a glioma-bearing rat with a skull bone removal model and considerably reduces glioma sizes relative to the drug-loaded system without the Pep22 peptide modification and the control respectively. Thus, OPPD not only effectively targets LDLR-overexpressing glioma but also exerts a dual therapeutic effect by transporting DOX into the glioma and generating thermal effects with near-infrared irradiation to kill tumor cells. These collective findings support the utility of the novel OPPD drug-loaded system as a promising drug delivery vehicle for clinical application in glioma therapy.

Rural out-migration has been a hallmark of socioeconomic development in China, but rapid economic development including deforestation also resulted in environmental degradation, leading to disastrous floods and droughts. In response, the Chinese government implemented Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs for both environmental conservation and poverty alleviation, notably the Conversion of Cropland to Forest Program (CCFP) and the Ecological Welfare Forest Program (EWFP). In the context of a full model of the determinants of migration incorporating individual, household and community factors, we investigate the manner in which these programs influenced rural out-migration in a mountainous township in Anhui, China. Results show that the CCFP compensation for switching cropland to trees releases farm labor, leading to out-migration. Meanwhile, the EWFP compensation provides poor rural farmers with large areas of forest with sizable cash subsidies that reduces their motivation to migrate. Out-migration was also found to be affected by a number of individual, household and community characteristics.

The insulin-like growth factor binding protein 6 (IGFBP6), as an inhibitor of IGF-II actions, plays an important role in inhibiting survival and migration of tumor cells. In our study, we intended to demonstrate the biological function of IGFBP6 in the development of glioma and its clinical significance. Firstly, Western blot and immunohistochemistry revealed that the expression of IGFBP6 inversely correlated with glioma grade. Secondly, multivariate analysis with the Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that IGFBP6 could be an independent prognostic factor for the survival of glioma patients. In addition, overexpression of IGFBP6 induced glioma cell apoptosis, and depletion of IGFBP6 had the opposite action. Finally, overexpression of IGFBP6 inhibited migration of glioma cells, and depletion of IGFBP6 had the opposite action. Together our findings suggest that IGFBP6 might be an important regulator and prognostic factor for glioma.

DIX domain containing 1 (DIXDC1), the human homolog of coiled-coil-DIX1 (Ccd1), is a positive regulator of Wnt signaling pathway. Recently, it was found to act as a candidate oncogene in colon cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer, and gastric cancer. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical significance of DIXDC1 expression in human glioma and its biological function in glioma cells. Western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis showed that DIXDC1 was overexpressed in glioma tissues and glioma cell lines. The expression level of DIXDC1 was evidently linked to glioma pathological grade and Ki-67 expression. Kaplan-Meier curve showed that high expression of DIXDC1 may lead to poor outcome of glioma patients. Serum starvation and refeeding assay indicated that the expression of DIXDC1 was associated with cell cycle. To determine whether DIXDC1 could regulate the proliferation and migration of glioma cells, we transfected glioma cells with interfering RNA-targeting DIXDC1; investigated cell proliferation with Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8, flow cytometry assays, and colony formation analyses; and investigated cell migration with wound healing assays and transwell assays. According to our data, knockdown of DIXDC1 significantly inhibited proliferation and migration of glioma cells. These data implied that DIXDC1 might participate in the development of glioma, suggesting that DIXDC1 can become a potential therapeutic strategy for glioma.

AIM: To evaluate the 12-months clinical and radiological outcomes with the OsseoSpeed(™) TX implant using an early loading protocol in patients with missing teeth in the posterior mandible. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five subjects, with Kennedy class I or II edentulism in the mandible, were enrolled at three centres in China. Two or three implants were placed in one edentulous region using a one-stage procedure. Patients received a screw-retained splinted fixed permanent restoration in one edentulous region 6-8 weeks after surgery. Follow-up took place at 6 and 12 months after loading. Marginal bone level alteration, implant survival and clinical findings were assessed using descriptive statistics. The data were analysed on a patient level, implying that the mean overall implants by patient was used as the statistical unit. The data from the three centres were pooled in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: A total of 107 implants were inserted in 45 patients. Twelve months after loading, the implant survival rate was 100%, with a mean (± std) marginal bone gain of 0.08 ± 0.411 mm and healthy soft tissue status. CONCLUSIONS: Early loading of splinted OsseoSpeed(™) TX implants was an effective and safe treatment for partial edentulism of the posterior mandible. B23 (also known as Nucleophosmin, NPM, numatrin or NO38) is a ubiquitously expressed phosphoprotein belonging to the nucleoplasmin family of chaperones. In this study we intended to investigate the clinical significance of B23 expression in human glioma and its biological function in glioma cells. Western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis showed that B23 was overexpressed in glioma tissues and glioma cell lines. In addition, the expression level of B23 was positively correlated with glioma pathological grade and Ki-67 expression. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that a higher B23 expression in patients with glioma was associated with a poorer prognosis. In vitro, after the release of glioma cell lines from serum starvation, the expression of B23 was upregulated, as well as PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) and cyclin A. In addition, knockdown of B23 by small interfering RNA transfection diminished the expression of PCNA, cyclin D1 and arrested cell growth at G1 phase. Taken together, our results implied that B23 could be a candidate prognostic biomarker as well as a potential therapeutical target of glioma.

Nuclear factor of activated T cells 45 kDa (NF45), is a transcription factor that interacts with NF90 to regulate gene expression. It has been proved to be associated with tumor proliferation in various human malignancies. However, the role of NF45 in glioma is poorly understood. The aim of our study was to examine the relationship between NF45 expression and pathological grade in glioma and the impact of NF45 on the proliferation of glioma cells. Expression levels of NF45 are significantly elevated in high-grade human tissue samples compared with low-grade human glioma tissues samples (P < 0.0001) in Western blot analysis. The result of immunohistochemical also revealed that the expression of NF45 was overexpressed in 121 resected gliomas of different pathologic grades and associated with Ki-67. To investigate the role of NF45 in glioma carcinogenesis, we reduced the expression of NF45 by small interfering RNAs, and results showed suppression of cell proliferation, arrest of the cell cycle, and reduction in clone in vitro. Importantly, we show that SiNF45 can induce the expression of p21 and reduce the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cyclin E. These findings indicate that NF45 plays an important role in the growth regulation of glioma cells, suggesting that NF45 maybe a molecular marker for pathology and a novel therapeutic target for malignant glioma.

BACKGROUND: Kidney stones account for a high proportion of urological emergencies. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the predictive ability of five scoring systems for overall stone-free status and postoperative complications after percutaneous nephrolithotomy and retrograde ureteroscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively analysed 312 cases of kidney stone patients between January 2021 and May 2022 at our centre. Multivariate logistic regression as well as ROC curves were applied to determine the ability to evaluate each scale to predict stone-free rates and postoperative complications. RESULTS: 179 patients have undergone PCNL. After multivariate logistic regression, the S.T.O.N.E score and history of ipsilateral renal surgery were predictive of stone-free status, and the predictive power of the S.T.O.N.E score was higher than that of history of ipsilateral renal surgery. Grade 1 complications were considered to be related to Guy's score and grade 2 complications were considered to be related to history of diabetes mellitus. 133 patients have undergone f-URS. After multivariate logistic regression analysis, the modified S-ReSC score, RUSS score, and R.I.R.S score were predictive of stone-free status, with the R.I.R.S score being the strongest predictor. Evidence of grade 2 complications was considered to be related to abnormal renal function. CONCLUSION: For PCNL, the S.T.O.N.E score had the best efficacy in predicting stone-free status, and the Guy's score had the best efficacy in predicting postoperative complications; for f-URS, the R.I.R.S score had the best efficacy in predicting stone-free status, and no scoring system predicted postoperative complications.

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on promoting osseointegration around dental implants.Study selection A comprehensive search was performed on two databases, including MEDLINE (PubMed) and Web of Science to identify relevant studies published before June 1, 2022. Randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. The year of publication, study design, animal species, number of animals, number of implants, implant position, implant size, intervention, follow-up time, bone volume ratio (BV/TV), bone-implant contact ratio (BIC), and implant removal torque value (RTV) measurements, including mean and SD, were extracted.Results Ten randomized trials were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that LIPUS significantly promoted osteogenesis around dental implants. Furthermore, in animal models of pre-existing diseases such as osteoporosis and diabetes, LIPUS had the same effect. The included data were divided into subgroups to explore the effects of different follow-up time, acoustic intensities, and frequencies. Results showed that higher acoustic intensities and frequencies significantly improve the osteogenic effects of LIPUS. There was some degree of heterogeneity owing to bias in the included studies. More high-quality randomized controlled trials are necessary in the future.Conclusions LIPUS can promote bone healing around dental implants and is an attractive option for edentulous patients, especially those with pre-existing diseases. Further clinical trials on the use of LIPUS in implant dentistry are warranted. Furthermore, future studies must pay more attention to acoustic intensity and frequency.

Forests play a key role in the mitigation of global warming and provide many other vital ecosystem goods and services. However, as forest continues to vanish at an alarming rate from the surface of the planet, the world desperately needs knowledge on what contributes to forest preservation and restoration. Migration, a hallmark of globalization, is widely recognized as a main driver of forest recovery and poverty alleviation. Here, we show that remittance from migrants reinforces forest recovery that would otherwise be unlikely with mere migration, realizing the additionality of payments for ecosystem services for China's largest reforestation policy, the Conversion of Cropland to Forest Program (CCFP). Guided by the framework that integrates telecoupling and coupled natural and human systems, we investigate forest-livelihood dynamics under the CCFP through the lens of rural out-migration and remittance using both satellite remote sensing imagery and household survey data in two representative sites of rural China. Results show that payments from the CCFP significantly increases the probability of sending remittance by out-migrants to their origin households. We observe substantial forest regeneration and greening surrounding households receiving remittance but forest decline and browning in proximity to households with migrants but not receiving remittance, as measured by forest coverage and the Enhanced Vegetation Index derived from space-borne remotely sensed data. The primary mechanism is that remittance reduces the reliance of households on natural capital from forests, particularly fuelwood, allowing forests near the households to recover. The shares of the estimated ecological and economic additionality induced by remittance are 2.0% (1.4%∼3.8%) and 9.7% (5.0%∼15.2%), respectively, to the baseline of the reforested areas enrolled in CCFP and the payments received by the participating households. Remittance-facilitated forest regeneration amounts to 12.7% (6.0%∼18.0%) of the total new forest gained during the 2003-2013 in China. Our results demonstrate that remittance constitutes a telecoupling mechanism between rural areas and cities over long distances, influencing the local social-ecological gains that the forest policy intended to stimulate. Thus, supporting remittance-sending migrants in cities can be an effective global warming mitigation strategy.
