Rechargeable aqueous aluminum batteries (AABs) are promising energy storage technologies owing to their high safety and ultra-high energy-to-price ratio. However, either the strong electrostatic forces between high-charge-density Al3+ and host lattice, or sluggish large carrier-ion diffusion toward the conventional inorganic cathodes generates inferior cycling stability and low rate-capacity. To overcome these inherent confinements, a series of promising redox-active organic materials (ROMs) are investigated and a π-conjugated structure ROMs with synergistic C═O and C═N groups is optimized as the new cathode in AABs. Benefiting from the joint utilization of multi-redox centers and rich π-π intermolecular interactions, the optimized ROMs with unique ion coordination storage mechanism facilely accommodate complex active ions with mitigated coulombic repulsion and robust lattice structure, which is further validated via theoretical simulations. Thus, the cathode achieves enhanced rate performance (153.9 mAh g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 ) and one of the best long-term stabilities (125.7 mAh g-1 after 4,000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 ) in AABs. Via molecular exploitation, this work paves the new direction toward high-performance cathode materials in aqueous multivalent-ion battery systems.

PURPOSE: This investigation sought to examine the efficacy and safety of low-dose apatinib used alongside chemotherapy in the clinical management of patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) within a real-world setting, whilst comparing the outcomes with those treated solely with chemotherapy. METHODS: This case series study analyzed clinical data and treatment outcomes of 163 patients with metastatic TNBC who underwent rescue treatment at the Medical Oncology Department of Clinical Oncology, Fujian Cancer Hospital, School of Fujian Medical University, China, between October 2011 and January 2023. All the patients underwent rescue treatment with either chemotherapy alone or apatinib (250 mg/day) combined with chemotherapy. The study's primary outcome was progression-free survival (PFS), whereas the secondary outcomes included overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and safety profiles. RESULTS: The study was designed to compare two groups [1]. Out of the 163 TNBC patients who participated in the study, 107 individuals (65.6%) received treatment based on chemotherapy, whereas 56 patients (34.4%) were given treatment based on a combination of low-dose apatinib (250 mg/day) and other treatments, including chemotherapy. After propensity score matching (PSM), the objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR) of patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who received apatinib-based treatment were 50.0 and 90.0%, respectively, while they were 6.7 and 20.0%, respectively, for the chemotherapy-based group (P < 0.001). The group that received apatinib-based treatment showed superior results in both PFS and OS compared to the group that received chemotherapy. The median PFS and OS for the apatinib-based group were 7.8 and 20.3 months, respectively, while they were only 2.2 months and 9.0 months, respectively, for the chemotherapy-based group (P < 0.001) [2]. Patients who were administered combo therapies, including PD-1 inhibitors, were excluded. In total, 97 patients received chemotherapy alone, while 34 patients were treated with apatinib in combination with chemotherapy. After propensity score matching (PSM), the ORR and DCR for the total group who received combo therapies were 44.4 and 81.5%, respectively, while they were 11.1 and 22.2%, respectively, for the chemotherapy alone group (P < 0.001). The group receiving both apatinib and chemotherapy displayed notable advantages over the group solely receiving chemotherapy in regards to PFS and OS for the entirety of the population. The PFS was found to be 7.8 months in comparison to 2.1 months (P < 0.001) and the OS was 21.1 months in contrast to 9.0 months (P < 0.001). Apatinib combined with chemotherapy induced grade 3/4 hematological toxicities, including neutropenia (8.8%) and thrombocytopenia (2.9%). Additionally, non-hematological toxicities were commonly observed, such as Hand-foot syndrome (35.3%), proteinuria (26.5%), hypertension (61.8%), higher alanine aminotransferase levels (26.5%), and fatigue (35.3%). The most frequent non-hematological grade 3/4 toxicities were Hand-foot syndrome (2.9%) and hypertension (5.9%). The study did not report any fatal adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of low-dose apatinib with chemotherapy has proven to be more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Additionally, the occurrence of grade 3/4 non-hematologic toxicities was significantly lower compared to the recommended dose of apatinib.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the secular trends in cardiovascular health (CVH) among U.S. adults with different glycemic statuses based on the Life's Essential 8 (LE8). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used nationally representative data from 6 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 2007 and 2018. Survey-weighted linear models were used to assess time trends in LE8 scores. Stratified analyses and sensitivity analyses were conducted to validate the stability of the results. RESULTS: A total of 23,616 participants were included in this study. From 2007 to 2018, there was no significant improvement in overall CVH and the proportion of ideal CVH among participants with diabetes and prediabetes. We observed an opposite trend between health behavior and health factors in the diabetes group, mainly in increasing physical activity scores and sleep scores (P for trend<0.001), and declining BMI scores [difference, -6.81 (95% CI, -12.82 to -0.80)] and blood glucose scores [difference, -6.41 (95% CI, -9.86 to -2.96)]. Dietary health remained at a consistently low level among participants with different glycemic status. The blood lipid scores in the prediabetes group improved but were still at a lower level than other groups. Education/income differences persist in the CVH of participants with diabetes or prediabetes, especially in health behavior factors. Sensitivity analyses of the absolute difference and change in proportion showed a consistent trend. CONCLUSIONS: Trends in CVH among participants with diabetes or prediabetes were suboptimal from 2007 to 2018, with persistent education/income disparities.

OBJECTIVES: Heart rate variability (HRV) is becoming more prevalent as a measurable parameter in wearable sleep-monitoring devices, which are simple and effective instruments for illness evaluation. Currently, most studies on investigating OSA severity and HRV have measured heart rates during wakefulness or sleep. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the circadian rhythm of HRV in male patients with OSA and its value for the estimation of OSA severity using group-based trajectory modeling. METHODS: Patients with complaints of snoring were enrolled from the Sleep Center of Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to apnea hypopnea index (AHI in events/h), as follows: (<15, 15≤AHI<30, and ≥30). HRV parameters were calculated using 24 h Holter monitoring, which included time-domain and frequency-domain indices. Circadian differences in the standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN) were evaluated for OSA severity using analysis of variance, trajectory analysis, and multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 228 patients were enrolled, 47 with mild OSA, 48 moderate, and 133 severe. Patients with severe OSA exhibited reduced triangular index and higher very low frequency than those in the other groups. Circadian HRV showed that nocturnal SDNN was considerably higher than daytime SDNN in patients with severe OSA. The difference among the OSA groups was significant at 23, 24, 2, and 3 o'clock sharp between the severe and moderate OSA groups (all P<0.05). The heterogeneity of circadian HRV trajectories in OSA was strongly associated with OSA severity, including sleep structure and hypoxia-related parameters. Among the low-to-low, low-to-high, high-to-low, and high-to-high groups, OSA severity in the low-to-high group was the most severe, especially compared with the low-to-low and high-to-low SDNN groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Circadian HRV in patients with OSA emerged as low daytime and high nocturnal in SDNN, particularly in men with severe OSA. The heterogeneity of circadian HRV revealed that trajectories with low daytime and significantly high nighttime were more strongly associated with severe OSA. Thus, circadian HRV trajectories may be useful to identify the severity of OSA.

Within the current process of large-scale dairy-cattle breeding, to address the problems of low recognition-accuracy and significant recognition-error associated with existing visual methods, we propose a method for recognizing the feeding behavior of dairy cows, one based on an improved RefineMask instance-segmentation model, and using high-quality detection and segmentation results to realize the recognition of the feeding behavior of dairy cows. Firstly, the input features are better extracted by incorporating the convolutional block attention module into the residual module of the feature extraction network. Secondly, an efficient channel attention module is incorporated into the neck design to achieve efficient integration of feature extraction while avoiding the surge of parameter volume computation. Subsequently, the GIoU loss function is used to increase the area of the prediction frame to optimize the convergence speed of the loss function, thus improving the regression accuracy. Finally, the logic of using mask information to recognize foraging behavior was designed, and the accurate recognition of foraging behavior was achieved according to the segmentation results of the model. We constructed, trained, and tested a cow dataset consisting of 1000 images from 50 different individual cows at peak feeding times. The method's effectiveness, robustness, and accuracy were verified by comparing it with example segmentation algorithms such as MSRCNN, Point_Rend, Cascade_Mask, and ConvNet_V2. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the improved RefineMask algorithm in recognizing the bounding box and accurately determining the segmentation mask is 98.3%, which is higher than that of the benchmark model by 0.7 percentage points; for this, the model parameter count size was 49.96 M, which meets the practical needs of local deployment. In addition, the technologies under study performed well in a variety of scenarios and adapted to various light environments; this research can provide technical support for the analysis of the relationship between cow feeding behavior and feed intake during peak feeding periods.

To effectively control the infection of plant pathogens, we designed and synthesized a series of phenylthiazole derivatives containing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole thione moiety and screened for their antibacterial potencies against Ralstonia solanacearum, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, as well as their antifungal potencies against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, Magnaporthe oryzae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The chemical structures of the target compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The bioassay results revealed that all the tested compounds exhibited moderate-to-excellent antibacterial and antifungal activities against six plant pathogens. Especially, compound 5k possessed the most remarkable antibacterial activity against R. solanacearum (EC50 = 2.23 µg/mL), which was significantly superior to that of compound E1 (EC50 = 69.87 µg/mL) and the commercial agent Thiodiazole copper (EC50 = 52.01 µg/mL). Meanwhile, compound 5b displayed the most excellent antifungal activity against S. sclerotiorum (EC50 = 0.51 µg/mL), which was equivalent to that of the commercial fungicide Carbendazim (EC50 = 0.57 µg/mL). The preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) results suggested that introducing an electron-withdrawing group at the meta-position and ortho-position of the benzene ring could endow the final structure with remarkable antibacterial and antifungal activity, respectively. The current results indicated that these compounds were capable of serving as promising lead compounds.

SARS-CoV-2, especially the variant strains, is rapidly spreading around the world. Rapid detection methods for the virus are crucial for controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. Herein, a localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) biosensor based on Ω-shaped fiber optic (Ω-FO) was developed for dual assays of SARS-CoV-2 monitoring. Due to its strong ability to control the orientation and density, a new T-shaped aptamer exhibits enhanced binding affinity toward N proteins. After being combined on the fiber optic surface, the T-shaped aptamer sensitively captured N proteins of SARS-CoV-2 for a direct assay. Further, core-shell structured gold/silver nanoparticles functionalized with a T-shaped aptamer (apt-Ag@AuNPs) can amplify the signal of N protein detection for a sandwich assay. The real-time analytical feature of the dual assays endows time-dependent sensitivity enhancement behavior, which provides a guideline to save analytical time. With those characteristics, the LSPR biosensor has been successfully used to rapidly identify 39 healthy volunteers and 39 COVID-19 patients infected with the ancestral or variant SARS-CoV-2. With the help of simple pretreatment, we obtain a true negative rate of 100% and a true positive rate of 92.3% with a short analysis time of 45 min using the direct assay. Further, the LSPR biosensor could also broaden the detection application range to the surface of cold-chain foods using a sandwich assay. Thus, the LSPR biosensor based on Ω-FO was demonstrated to have broad application potential to detect SARS-CoV-2 rapidly.

Oncolytic viruses (OVs) can selectively kill tumor cells without affecting normal cells, as well as activate the innate and adaptive immune systems in patients. Thus, they have been considered as a promising measure for safe and effective cancer treatment. Recently, a few genetically engineered OVs have been developed to further improve the effect of tumor elimination by expressing specific immune regulatory factors and thus enhance the body's antitumor immunity. In addition, the combined therapies of OVs and other immunotherapies have been applied in clinical. Although there are many studies on this hot topic, a comprehensive review is missing on illustrating the mechanisms of tumor clearance by OVs and how to modify engineered OVs to further enhance their antitumor effects. In this study, we provided a review on the mechanisms of immune regulatory factors in OVs. In addition, we reviewed the combined therapies of OVs with other therapies including radiotherapy and CAR-T or TCR-T cell therapy. The review is useful in further generalize the usage of OV in cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Aneuploidies are the most common chromosomal abnormality and the main genetic cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Since numerous studies have focused on common trisomies, relatively little is known about the association between phenotypic findings and rare autosomal aneuploidies (RAAs). We conducted a retrospective study of 48,904 cases for chromosomal microarray analysis in a large tertiary referral center and reported the overall frequencies, clinical manifestations, and outcomes of prenatal RAAs. RESULTS: A total of 90 RAAs were detected, of which 83 cases were mosaic trisomies and 7 were non-mosaic trisomies. Chromosomes 16, 22, and 9 were identified as the major chromosomes involving RAAs. The four predominant indications for prenatal diagnosis in our RAA cases were RAA-positive in noninvasive prenatal screening, advanced maternal age, ultrasound abnormalities, and high-risk for serum prenatal screening. Cardiovascular defects were the most frequently observed structural abnormalities, followed by musculoskeletal anomalies. Increased nuchal translucency and persistent left superior vena cava, the major soft marker abnormalities involved, were also observed in our RAA cases. Clinical outcomes were available for all RAAs, with 63 induced abortions and 27 live births recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Variable phenotypes and outcomes were observed, which were highly heterogeneous in cases of prenatal RAAs. Thus, a cautious and comprehensive strategy should be implemented during prenatal counseling for RAAs.

An integrated anaerobic digestion system for the simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen from fish sludge was developed by coupling iron sludge supplementation with intermittent aeration. In terms of nitrogen removal, Fe(III) in iron sludge could trigger Feammox reactions and intermittent aeration could drive the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle to sustain continuous ammonia removal. Mass balance analysis suggested that nitrate was the main product of Feammox, which was subsequently removed through heterotrophic denitrification. In terms of carbon removal, the Fe(III)-induced dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) process significantly promoted fish sludge hydrolysis and provided more simple organics for methanogens and denitrifiers, but aeration showed a negative impact on methanogenesis. To promote nitrogen removal and avoid serious methanogenesis inhibition, different aeration intensities were studied. Results showed that compared with the control without aeration or iron sludge addition, aeration for 5 min every 3 days (150 mL/min) contributed to a 29.0% lower NH4+-N concentration and a 12.1% lower total chemical oxygen demand level on day 28, and the decline in methane yield was acceptable (only 13.5% lower). Simultaneous methanogenesis, Feammox, and denitrification in a single reactor treating fish sludge were achieved, which provides a simple and low-cost strategy for the treatment of organic wastewater.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the intrauterine phenotypic spectrum of short stature homeobox-containing (SHOX) gene-associated skeletal dysplasia and provide genetic counseling at-risk pregnancies. METHOD: We analyzed the fetuses with SHOX-microdeletions identified by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-array. The intrauterine phenotypes and outcomes were further elaborated. RESULTS: Nine fetuses carrying a single SHOX-microdeletion were reported, with deletion sizes ranging from 0.134 to 1.35 Mb. Shortened long bones were observed in all fetuses, varying from -2.0 standard deviation (SD) to -5.3 SD. Moreover, all cases had a femur length/foot ratio less than 0.87 and a femur/abdominal circumference ratio greater than 0.16, suggesting that non-lethal skeletal dysplasia may be involved. Two fetuses showed intrauterine growth restriction, and two had nasal bone hypoplasia. Prenatal ultrasonography did not reveal other obvious anomalies, including the Madelung deformity. Five microdeletions were inherited and one was de novo. Five terminations and four newborns were recorded. Two newborns had normal stature, and two were short-statured (height <3rd percentile), with one having inflexible wrists. CONCLUSIONS: SHOX haploinsufficiency may manifest with shortened fetal long bones. The combination of history taking, prenatal ultrasonography, and SNP-array can prompt early prenatal diagnosis and timely postnatal treatment of SHOX-associated skeletal dysplasia.

High value-added products recovery from algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) has received great attention recently. This study aimed to explore the role of different light wavelengths in regulating granule formation, protein and lipid production, and microbial functions. Bacterial granular sludge (BGS, R0) was most conducive to forming ABGS under blue (R2) light with the highest chlorophyll a (10.2 mg/g-VSS) and diameter (1800 µm), followed by red (R1) and white (R3) lights. R0-R3 acquired high protein contents (>164.8 mg/g-VSS) with essential amino acids above 44.4%, all of which were suitable for recycling, but R2 was the best. Also, blue light significantly increased total lipid production, while red light promoted the accumulation of some unsaturated fatty acids (C18:2 and C18:3). Some unique algae and dominant bacteria (e.g., Stigeoclonium, Chlamydomonas, and Flavobacteria) enrichment and some key functions (e.g., amino acid, fatty acid, and lipid biosynthesis) up-regulation in R2 might help to improve proteins and lipids quality. Combined, this study provides valuable guidance for protein and lipid recovery from ABGS.

BACKGROUND: Chlorogenic acid (CGA), as one of the most abundant naturally occurring phenolic acids, has been documented to be beneficial for intestinal health. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. The adult intestinal stem cell is the critical driver of epithelial homeostasis and regeneration. RESULTS: This study hypothesized that CGA exerted intestinal health effects by modulating intestinal stem-cell functions. Lgr5-EGFP mice were treated for 14 days, and intestinal organoids derived from these mice were treated for 3 days, using CGA solution. In comparison with the control group, CGA treatment increased intestinal villous height and crypt depth in mice and augmented the area expansion and the number of budding intestinal organoids. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis revealed that CGA treatment significantly increased the expression of genes coding intestinal stem-cell markers in intestinal tissue and organoids, and upregulated the expression of genes coding secretory cell lineages and enterocytes, although not statistically significantly. Fluorescence-activated cell-sorting analysis further confirmed that CGA augmented the number of stem cells. 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation and Ki67 immunostaining results also demonstrated that CGA treatment enhanced intestinal stem-cell proliferation. CONCLUSION: Altogether, our findings indicate that CGA could activate intestinal stem-cell and epithelial regeneration, which could contribute to the improvement of intestinal morphology or organoid growth of mice. This highlights a promising mechanism for CGA as an excellent candidate for the formulation of dietary supplements and functional foods for intestinal protection. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

We report on power scaling and efficient operation of a Ho:Y2O3 ceramic laser at 2.1 µm in-band pumped with an incoherently beam combined high power and narrow-linewidth Tm fiber source at 1931.2 nm. The 0.5 at.% Ho3+ doped Ho:Y2O3 ceramic is fabricated in-house with scattering loss of < 0.25% cm-1. Up to 210.5 W of continuous-wave output power has been generated at 2117 nm for 366 W absorbed pump power shaped with a one-dimensional top-hat profile, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 60.0% with respect to the absorbed pump power. A slope efficiency of 67.5% has been demonstrated with 160 W of output power using a circular beam pump configuration. Results presented in this work verify the superior power scaling capability of a Ho:Y2O3 ceramic laser with high efficiency at ∼2.1 µm.

A total of 23 compounds based on Osthole skeleton were designed and synthesized. Their agonistic activity for Nrf2 were evaluated by Dual-luciferase Reporter Gene Assay. Most of the compounds showed better activities compared with Osthole, especially O15 and O21. And the median effective concerntration (EC50) values was calculated accordingly, both of which showed remarkable activity for Nrf2. The structure activity relationship study indicated that introduction of the structure of stilbene might be beneficial for enhancement of agonistic properties of Osthole, and the position of the substituent may have a greater effect on the activity than the electron-donating/withdrawing ability of the substituent. Mechanism of the action of selected compound O15 was investigated by molecular docking, cellular thermal shift assay and ubiquitination assay, which suggested the reason why O15 exhibited relatively stronger agonistic activity for Nrf2. Compound O15 and O21 both provided novel methods to investigate Osthole-based compounds as Nrf2 agonists.

BACKGROUND: The duration of virus shedding is necessary for determining the infectious period. But there were few quantitative studies on the changes of viral load and the law of the viral shedding in hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) patients has not yet been clarified. METHODS: This study will prospectively recruit coxsackievirus A10 (CV-A10), coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) infected inpatients from January 2022 to December 2022. A series of samples and questionnaire information will be collected regularly to establish the dynamic function relationship between time and viral load changes and a Bayesian multilevel model will be constructed to clarify the evolvement rules which reflect the dynamic changes of viral load and the duration of viral shedding in patients with HFMD. DISCUSSION: The results of this study is expected to further clarify the evolvement rules which reflect the dynamic changes of viral load and the duration of viral shedding in HFMD patients under the influence of related factors. It can also provide important evidence for the scientific definition of the infectious period and isolation period of HFMD in China.

This study investigated ultrafiltration membrane fouling by extracellular organic matter (EOM) and the mechanism operating during long-term exposure to pharmaceuticals and personal care products. The results indicated that carbamazepine and diclofenac in algal-laden water altered the filtration flux and membrane fouling by EOM. Exposure to low-concentration carbamazepine (0.25 µg/L) improved the filtration flux and the total (Rtot) and reversible fouling resistance (Rc), whereas the filtration flux and Rtot and Rc were reduced when EOM was used during long-term exposure to high carbamazepine concentrations (>1 µg/L). Both Rtot and Rc were increased when algae were exposed to 0.25 µg/L diclofenac, whereas the filtration flux and Rtot and Rc were alleviated when algae were exposed to >1 µg/L diclofenac. Moreover, carbamazepine and diclofenac (0.25 µg/L - 1000 µg/L) in water enhanced the irreversible fouling resistance (Rb) when ultrafiltration was used to treat algal-laden waters. The mechanism indicated that membrane fouling induced by standard blocking was transformed to complete blocking when EOM was exposed to high levels of carbamazepine (>0.25 µg/L) in the initial filtration process, whereas cake layer formation played an important role during the later filtration process; with low carbamazepine levels (0.25 µg/L), standard blocking of EOM was dominant during the entire filtration process. The membrane fouling mechanism also changed when algal-laden waters were exposed to diclofenac, the membrane fouling was transformed from complete blocking to standard blocking when DFC was present in the initial filtration process, whereas cake layer formation exerted an important role during the late filtration process. This research provides important information on the long-term risks caused by pharmaceutical and personal care products and potential threats to membrane treatment.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), seriously threatens human life and health. The correct folding and polymerization of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) protein of coronavirus in Escherichia coli may reduce the cost of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. In this study, we constructed this nanopore by using the principle of ClyA porin polymerization triggered by the cell membrane. We used surfactants to "pick" the ClyA-RBD nanopore from the bacterial outer membrane. More importantly, the polymerized RBD displayed on the ClyA-RBD polymerized porin (RBD-PP) already displays some correct spatial conformational epitopes that can induce neutralizing antibodies. The nanostructures of RBD-PP can target lymph nodes and promote antigen uptake and processing by dendritic cells, thereby effectively eliciting the production of anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies, systemic cellular immune responses, and memory T cells. We applied this PP-based vaccine platform to fabricate an RBD-based subunit vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, which will provide a foundation for the development of inexpensive coronavirus vaccines. The development of a novel vaccine delivery system is an important part of innovative drug research. This novel PP-based vaccine platform is likely to have additional applications, including other viral vaccines, bacterial vaccines, tumor vaccines, drug delivery, and disease diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of exergame training on female patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Outcome measurements mainly include overall functioning, pain perception, quality of life, exercise capacity, health perception, kinesiophobia, and fatigue severity. DATA SOURCES: Five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) were searched from inception until June 24, 2021. In addition to searches, review the reference lists of relevant papers by hand was also conducted. Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias was used to evaluate the risk of bias in the included studies. STUDY SELECTION: Articles were collected with the following study inclusion criteria: (1) randomized controlled trial (RCT) design; (2) participants were female patients with FMS aged older than 18 years; (3) participants in experimental groups received exergame training using any modality; and (4) outcome measures included overall functioning, quality of life, exercise capacity, health perception, kinesiophobia, and fatigue severity. DATA EXTRACTION: The data were independently extracted by 2 researchers. The extracted data related to the document characteristics (first author, publication year, and country) participant characteristics (number and age of participants in the experimental and control groups), and interventions (intervention content, frequency, and duration, and measurement tools). DATA SYNTHESIS: Nine RCTs including 466 female patients with FMS were included in the analysis. Exergame training had significant positive effects on overall functioning (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.77 to 0.27; P<.0001), pain perception (SMD, -0.49; 95% CI, -0.97 to -0.02; P=.04), quality of life (SMD, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.44-1.10; P<.00001), exercise capacity (SMD, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.32-0.84; P<.0001), health perception (SMD, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.38-1.01; P<.0001), and fatigue severity (SMD, -0.97; 95% CI, -1.55 to -0.38; P=.001). However, exergame training did not have significant effects on kinesiophobia (SMD, -1.13; 95% CI, -2.88 to 0.62; P=.21). CONCLUSIONS: Exergame training has beneficial effects on the overall functioning, pain perception, quality of life, exercise capacity, health perception and fatigue severity of female patients with FMS. Exergame training is a potential non-drug therapy for the treatment of patients with FMS.

BACKGROUND: The heart requires a high rate of fatty-acid oxidation (FAO) to meet its energy needs. Neutral lipids are the main source of energy for the heart and are stored in lipid droplets (LDs), which are cytosolic organelles that primarily serve to store neutral lipids and regulate cellular lipid metabolism. LD-associated proteins (LDAPs) are proteins either located on the surface of the LDs or reside in the cytosol and contribute to lipid metabolism. Therefore, abnormal cardiac lipid accumulation or FAO can alter the redox state of the heart, resulting in cardiomyopathy, a group of diseases that negatively affect the myocardial function, thereby leading to heart failure and even cardiac death. SUMMARY: LDs, along with LDAPs, are pivotal for modulating heart lipid homeostasis. The proper cardiac development and the maintenance of its normal function depend largely on lipid homeostasis regulated by LDs and LDAPs. Overexpression or deletion of specific LDAPs can trigger myocardial dysfunction and may contribute to the development of cardiomyopathy. Extensive connections and interactions may also exist between LDAPs. Key Message: In this review, the various mechanisms involved in LDAP-mediated regulation of lipid metabolism, the association between cardiac development and lipid metabolism, as well as the role of LDAPs in cardiomyopathy progression are discussed.
