RESUMO

Synthesis and coating of multi-metal oxides (MMOs) and alloys on conductive substrates are indispensable to electrochemical applications, yet demand multiple, resource-intensive, and time-consuming processes. Herein, an alternative approach to the synthesis and coating of alloys and MMOs by femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) is reported. A solution-based precursor ink is deposited and dried on the substrate and illuminated by a femtosecond laser. During the illumination, dried precursor ink is transformed to MMO/alloys and is simultaneously bonded to the substrate. The formulation of the alloy and MMO precursor ink for laser processing is universally applicable to a large family of oxides and alloys. The process is conducted at room temperature and in an open atmosphere. To demonstrate, a large family of 57 MMOs and alloys are synthesized from a group of 13 elements. As a proof of concept, Ni0.24 Co0.23 Cu0.24 Fe0.15 Cr0.14 high entropy alloy synthesized on stainless-steel foil by FsLDW is used for the oxygen evolution reaction, which achieves a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a significantly low overpotential of 213 mV. Further, FsLDW can also achieve microfabrication of alloys/MMO with feature sizes down to 20 µm.

RESUMO

This paper presents data collected in 2013, 2014 and 2015 on the cultural practices and agronomic performance of cropping systems in 500 lowland rice fields located in five regions of three West African countries, Benin, Mali and Sierra Leone. Data were collected in two stages. In the first stage, the main regions containing inland valleys were identified in each of the three countries and the most cultivated inland valley in each region was selected. Weather data were obtained from weather stations located close to the selected inland valleys. In regions with no weather stations, Tinytag data loggers were installed in the inland valleys to collect data on temperature, rainfall and relative humidity. In the second stage, the location and size of all the farmers' fields in each inland valley were determined using GPS devices. In 2013, soil samples were collected in each farmer's field and the soil physical-chemical properties were determined. Agronomic and socio-economic surveys were conducted to collect data on cultivated crops, crop sequences and management techniques using questionnaires and informal interviews. Crop yields were determined in each farmer's field in the growing season. The database contains a total of 131 variables divided into 9 themes: field characteristics, land preparation, field maintenance, irrigation, residue management, soil data, weather data, crop productions in the dry season and crop production in the rainy season.

RESUMO

The increasing demand for wearable optoelectronics in biomedicine, prosthetics, and soft robotics calls for innovative and transformative technologies that permit facile fabrication of compact and flexible photodetectors with high performance. Herein, by developing a single-step selective laser writing strategy that can finely tailor material properties through incident photon density control and lead to the formation of hierarchical hybrid nanocomposites, e.g., reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-zinc oxide (ZnO), a highly flexible and all rGO-ZnO hybrid-based photodetector is successfully constructed. The device features 3D ultraporous hybrid films with high photoresponsivity as the active detection layer, and hybrid nanoflakes with superior electrical conductivity as interdigitated electrodes. Benefitting from enhanced photocarrier generation because of the ultraporous film morphology, efficient separation of electron-hole pairs at rGO-ZnO heterojunctions, and fast electron transport by highly conductive rGO nanosheets, the photodetector exhibits high, linear, and reproducible responsivities to a wide range of ultraviolet (UV) intensities. Furthermore, the excellent mechanical flexibility and robustness enable the photodetector to be conformally attached to skin, thus intimately monitoring the exposure dosage of human body to UV light for skin disease prevention. This study advances the fabrication of flexible optoelectronic devices with reduced complexity, facilitating the integration of wearable optoelectronics and epidermal systems.

RESUMO

A study was conducted in southern Benin to assess the contamination of vegetables by fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and fecal streptococci as one consequence of the intensification of vegetable cropping through fertilization with poultry manure. For this purpose, on-farm trials were conducted in 2009 and 2010 at Yodo-Condji and Ayi-Guinnou with three replications and four fertilization treatments including poultry manure and three vegetable crops (leafy eggplant, tomato, and carrot). Sampling, laboratory analyses, and counts of fecal bacteria in the samples were performed in different cropping seasons. Whatever the fertilization treatment, the logs of mean fecal bacteria count per g of fresh vegetables were variable but higher than AFNOR criteria. The counts ranged from 8 to 10 fecal coliforms, from 5 to 8 fecal streptococci, and from 2 to 6 Escherichia coli, whereas AFNOR criteria are, respectively, 0, 1, and 0. The long traditional use of poultry manure and its use during the study helped obtain this high population of fecal pathogens. Results confirmed that the contamination of vegetables by fecal bacteria is mainly due to the use of poultry manure. The use of properly composted poultry manure with innovative cropping techniques should help reduce the number and incidence of pathogens.
