INTRODUCTION: Nowadays the majority of the surgical procedures are video surgeries. Despite technological advances, some problems remain. The buildup of residues in front of the lens is an example of this problem. To solve it, Abreu et al. (Surg Technol Int 26:43-47, 2015) developed LacrimaSurg, which works as a lacrimal duct in the optics preventing fogging and residues buildup on it. This had 98.1% of efficiency in an experimental study. OBJECTIVE: Study feasibility and safety of the device under real surgical conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pilot study included 30 patients undergoing thoracic procedures using LacrimaSurg. Procedures were recorded for further analysis by investigators. The characteristics of patients (age, sex, body mass index, Charlton comorbidity index), data of environment (Temperatures variances), and data of procedures (type of surgery and duration of it) were recorded. The investigators watched the videos and recorded the residue buildup and fogging events that impaired surgeon's vision. The number of times the optics got dirty, need for further jets of crystalloid solution, and need for mechanical cleaning were collected to evaluate efficacy. Comparative serum measurements of electrolytes before and after surgery were studied. Data were organized and analyzed by simple linear correlations and t test for continuous variables and Fisher's test for categorical variables. RESULTS: The use of the device allowed 97% of the procedures to be performed without interruption. No characteristics inherent to the patients or to the procedures that lead to fogging or filth of the optics were identified. There were no statistically significant differences between pre- and postoperative serum ions, and no postoperative complications related to the use of the device were observed. CONCLUSION: The device was effective in preventing interruption of surgical procedures due to dirt or fogging, its use was considered safe, and did not cause postoperative complications.

PURPOSE: We studied the lymphatic drainage of the upper limb and mammary region directing to the axilla to investigate whether independent pathways can be observed or whether anastomoses and shared drainage occur between them. This analysis aimed to assess the safety of axillary reverse mapping (ARM) in breast cancer treatment and to understand the development of lymphedema after sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) alone. METHODS: Seven unfixed stillborn fetuses were injected with a modified Gerota mass in the peri-areolar area, palm and dorsum of the hands, formalin fixed, and then submerged in 10% hydrogen peroxide solution. Microsurgical dissection was then performed on the subcutaneous cellular tissue of the upper limb, axillary region, and anterior thorax to expose the lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. RESULTS: The dye injected into the upper limb reached either the lateral axillary group, known to be exclusively responsible for upper limb drainage, or the anterior group, which is typically related to breast drainage. There was great proximity among the pathways and lymph nodes. Communicating lymphatic vessels among these groups of lymph nodes were also found in all studied cases. DISCUSSION: Lymphedema remains a challenging morbidity in breast cancer treatment. ARM and SLNB aim to avoid unnecessary damage to the lymphatic drainage of the upper limb. However, our anatomical study suggests that ARM may have potential oncological risks because preserved lymph nodes may harbor malignant cells due their proximity, overlapping drainage pathways, and connecting lymph vessels among lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms of the deep veins of the lower limbs are rare and often asymptomatic. Although natural history is unclear, these aneurysms have been associated with deep venous thrombosis and fatal pulmonary embolism events. To our knowledge, this case represents the fifth patient with isolated aneurysm of a calf vein described in the literature and the second one affecting the fibular vein. METHODS: We report the case of a 20-year-old white man with an aneurysm of the fibular vein that we believe is the second case in the literature RESULTS: After evaluation and diagnosis, the aneurysm was resected with full recovery of the patient. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of this unusual condition seems to be mandatory for major thromboembolic events can be as high as 71% with 2 deaths, according to a review of 24 patients with popliteal vein aneurysms. Unlike proximal veins, where reconstruction is advisable, calf vein aneurysms can be safely managed by simple excision and ligature. In our patient, aneurysm resection eliminated symptoms, and good result was maintained in long follow-up.

Method: Temporal muscles of 14 adult cadavers were studied. The muscle bellies were divided into six areas, three superior (1.2 and 3) and three inferior areas (4, 5, and 6) lower, according to a Cartesian plane to analyze and describe the entry points of the branches of the deep temporal nerves into the muscle. The branching distribution was analyzed using Poisson log-linear tests with Bonferroni post hoc tests for comparison between groups (sextants) (p < 0.05). Results: Deep temporal nerve entry points were found in the temporal muscle in all areas. Most of the branches were observed in areas 2 and 5, which coincide with the muscle fibers responsible for mandible elevation and related to the previously described MTPs. Fewer branches were found in areas 1 and 6, where contraction produces mandible retraction. Conclusion: There is an anatomical correlation between the branching pattern of the deep temporal nerve and temporal muscle trigger points. Adequate knowledge of the innervation of the temporal muscle may help elucidate the pathophysiology of myofascial syndromes and provide a rational basis for interventional or conservative approaches and help surgeons avoid iatrogenic lesions to the deep temporal nerve lesion.

Arthroscopy and endoscopic hip surgery have attracted increasing attention in the orthopedic field. In the case of arthroscopy, portals and their relationships with neurovascular bundle structures at risk are well established. However, studies on endoscopic portals used for the repair of hamstring tendon injuries are insufficient. Hamstring injuries are the most common muscle injury in sports medicine, and up to 12% can present as a tendon rupture. Endoscopic surgery is advantageous because it has a lower rate of bleeding and avoids excessive handling of the gluteal muscles. The objective of this study is to perform an anatomical evaluation of endoscopic portals for hamstring repair and measure their distance to neurovascular structures-mainly sciatic nerve and posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN). Fifteen hips from frozen and formalized cadavers were evaluated. Specimens that showed any modification in their anatomy were excluded. Portals were simulated using Steinmann pins, and anatomical dissection was performed. Distances from neurovascular structures were measured using a digital caliper. Four male cadaver hips (26%) and eleven female cadaver hips (74%) were included. Two dissected hips presented PFCN injury through the posterolateral portal- mean 20.28 mm (±8.14), and one through the distal accessory portal- 21.87 mm (±12.03). The injury rate for PFCN was 3/15 or 20%. None of the portals presented sciatic nerve injury. Conclusion: There is an imminent risk of nerve injury to the PFCN by performing the lateral portals for hamstring repair. To avoid this, we recommend starting the procedure through the most medial (posteromedial) portal, and the other portals must be performed under direct visualization.

Purpose: To present the long-term results of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for early breast cancer using a nondedicated linear accelerator. Methods and Materials: The eligibility criteria were biopsy-proven invasive carcinoma, age ≥40 years, tumor size ≤3 cm, and N0M0. We excluded multifocal lesions and sentinel lymph node involvement. All patients had previously undergone breast magnetic resonance imaging. Breast-conserving surgery with margins and sentinel lymph node evaluation using frozen sections were performed in all cases. If there were no margins or involved sentinel lymph nodes, the patient was transferred from the operative suite to the linear accelerator room, where IORT was delivered (21 Gy). Results: A total of 209 patients who were followed up for ≥1.5 years from 2004 to 2019 were included. The median age was 60.3 years (range, 40-88.6), and the mean pT was 1.3 cm (range, 0.2-4). There were 90.5% pN0 cases (7.2% of micrometastases and 1.9% of macrometastases). Ninety-seven percent of the cases were margin free. The rate of lymphovascular invasion was 10.6%. Twelve patients were negative for hormonal receptors, and 28 patients were HER2 positive. The median Ki-67 index was 29% (range, 0.1-85). Intrinsic subtype stratification was as follows: luminal A, 62.7% (n = 131); luminal B, 19.1% (n = 40); HER2 enriched 13.4% (n = 28); and triple negative, 4.8% (n = 10). Within the median follow-up of 145 months (range, 12.8-187.1), the 5-year, 10-year, and 15-year overall survival rates were 98%, 94.7%, and 88%, respectively. The 5-year, 10-year, and 15-year disease-free rates were 96.3%, 90%, and 75.6%, respectively. The 15-year local recurrence-free rate was 76%. Fifteen local recurrences (7.2%) occurred throughout the follow-up period. The mean time to local recurrence was 145 months (range, 12.8-187.1). As a first event, 3 cases of lymph node recurrence, 3 cases of distant metastasis, and 2 cancer-related deaths were recorded. Tumor size >1 cm, grade III, and lymphovascular invasion were identified as risk factors. Conclusions: Despite approximately 7% of recurrences, we may infer that IORT may still be a reasonable option for selected cases. However, these patients require a longer follow-up as recurrences may occur after 10 years.

Our systematic review evaluates surgically relevant information about corona mortis (CM), such as anatomical structure, size, laterality, incidence, and anthropometric correlations. This study aimed to provide data about anastomosis in an attempt to avoid iatrogenic damage during surgery. Articles were searched online using the descriptor "Corona Mortis" in PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Saúde [LILACS], MEDLINE, indice bibliografico espaãol en ciencias de la salud [IBECS]), and SciELO database. The time range was set between 1995 and 2020. The articles were selected according to their titles and later the abstracts' relation to our research purpose. All the selected articles were read entirely. A manual search based of the references cited in these articles was also conducted to identify other articles or books of interest. Forty references fulfilled the criteria for this review. The mean incidence of CM was 63% (the majority venous) among 3,107 hemipelvises. The incidence of bilateral CM was lower than that of unilateral variations based on the analysis of 831 pelvises. The mean caliber of the anastomosis was 2.8 mm among 1,608 hemipelvises. There is no consensus concerning the anthropometric influences in CM. Finally, we concluded that CM is not an unusual anatomical variation and that we must not underestimate the risk of encountering the anastomosis during surgery. Anatomical knowledge of CM is, therefore, essential in preventing accidents for surgeons who approach the inguinal and retropubic regions.

A tendon is a mechanosensitive tissue that transmits muscle-derived forces to bones. Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), has been used in therapeutic approaches in tendon lesions, but uncertainties regarding its mechanisms of action have prevented its widespread use. We investigated the response of PBM therapy in experimental lesions of the Achilles tendon in rats. Thirty adult male Wistar rats weighing 250 to 300 g were surgically submitted to bilateral partial transverse section of the Achilles tendon. The right tendon was treated with PBM, whereas the left tendon served as a control. On the third postoperative day, the rats were divided into three experimental groups consisting of ten rats each, which were treated with PBM (Konf, Aculas - HB 750), 780 nm and 80 mW for 20 seconds, three times/week for 7, 14 and 28 days. The rats were sacrificed at the end of the therapeutic time period. The Sca-1 was examined by immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry, and COLA1, COLA2 and COLA3 gene expression was examined by qRT-PCR. COLA2 gene expression was higher in PBM treated tendons than in the control group. The histomorphometric analysis coincided with increased number of mesenchymal cells, characterized by Sca-1 expression in the lesion region (p<0.001). PBM effectively interferes in tendon tissue repair after injury by stimulating mesenchymal cell proliferation and the synthesis of collagen type II, which is suggested to provide structural support to the interstitial tissues during the healing process of the Achilles tendon. Further studies are needed to confirm the role of PBM in tendon healing.

BACKGROUND: Even students with previous academic success may face challenges that affect their academic performance. Many medical schools offer programs to students at the risk of academic failure, to ensure that they succeed in the course. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: In this report we describe a pioneering academic tutoring program developed at a Brazilian medical school and discuss the initial results of the program based on the feedback from tutors and data regarding the progression of students in the medical course. RESULTS: In 2018, 33 students enrolled into the program. Students' performance difficulties were mainly associated with mental health problems and socioeconomic vulnerability. Of the 33 students, 27 (81.8%) were assisted by the Mental Health Support Service and 16 (48.5%) were assisted by the Social Assistance Service. In addition to the planning academic activity class load, tutors were able to assist students in solving socioeconomic issues, carrying out personal support interventions with the promotion of self-esteem, and presenting suggestions for behavioral changes in their routine. For most students (72%), the action plan proposed by the tutors was successful. Eight of the 14 (57%) students in the fourth year progressed to the final two years of in-hospital practical training (internship). CONCLUSIONS: The Academic Tutoring Program showed positive results for most of the students. Close monitoring and tutor intervention allowed students with poor academic performance to overcome the low performance cycle. These important tasks demand time and energy from tutors, and institutional recognition of these professionals is essential for the successful maintenance of the program.

OBJECTIVES: To verify the pyramidalis muscle's frequency (bilaterality, unilaterality, or absence) and morphometry (length of the medial border and width of its origin/base) in a sample of the Brazilian population and the anthropometric influence. METHODS: Dissection of 30 cadavers, up to 24h post-mortem. RESULTS: The pyramidalis muscle was present bilaterally and unilaterally in 83.33% and 3.33% of the cadavers, respectively, and absent in 13.33%. The muscles on the right and left sides were symmetrical in length but not in width; the pyramidalis muscles of men were longer, while those of the women were wider. We also found that there was greater variation in the dimensions (length and width) of the men's muscles. Finally, in this sample of the Brazilian population, the pyramidalis muscle's unilaterality was more prevalent than in other populations, and its complete absence was less prevalent. CONCLUSIONS: There were no cases of muscle duplication in one or both sides, as described in some studies. Despite all of its morphometric variation, the pyramidalis muscle maintained its triangular shape with longitudinal fibers in every case. Furthermore, no statistically significant correlation was noted between the muscles' dimensions and person's age, height, weight, or gender.

BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is increasingly performed for breast cancer (BC) treatment. To ensure local control with this procedure, it is important to obtain clear surgical margins. Here, we aimed to estimate the confidence in intraoperative evaluation of the retroareolar margin (IERM) and the necessity of removing the intra-nipple ducts. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated 224 BC (infiltrating carcinoma 178, ductal carcinoma in situ 46) patients, who underwent NSM. IERM was determined via cytology and frozen sections. Following gland removal, the intra-nipple ducts were excised and embedded in paraffin for analysis. The retroareolar tissue was also paraffin-embedded and reanalyzed for definitive evaluation of retroareolar margins (DERM). The IERM predictive capacity in relation to DERM and the frequency of intra-nipple duct involvement were estimated. RESULTS: IERM classified the sub-nipple areolar complex area as cancer-free in 219 cases (97.8%). The condition of clear retroareolar margin was confirmed by DERM in 216 cases (98.6%). The IERM accuracy was estimated as 98.6%. Ductal carcinoma in situ was detected in intra-nipple ducts using paraffin sections in 1.8% of the cases, despite clear IERM (4/219). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, IERM affords high accuracy and its results are suitable to manage the nipple-areolar complex. Nevertheless, some patients may retain residual disease in the intra-nipple ducts; thus, these ducts should ideally be removed during NSM.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is widely prevalent in the general population; some reports estimate its prevalence ranges from 9 to 85%. Among the different locations where MPS may arise, pain related to the masseter muscle is referred as masticatory myofascial pain. MPS is characterized by myofascial trigger points (MTPs), which represent tender anatomical areas of a muscle where painful symptoms are elicited whenever stimulated. Previous publications have found MTPs to coincide with neuromuscular junctions at the motor end plate, at the innervation zone (IZ). Our study aimed to describe the innervation of the masseter muscle and relate it to clinically described myofascial trigger points (MTPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We mapped the nerve fiber distribution into the masseter muscles from 16 cadavers by anatomical dissection. We divided the muscle into six regions, three superior (I-III) and three inferior (IV-VI), and classified the nerve's branches distribution according to these predetermined areas. Statistical analyses was made by Poisson distribution and logarithm link function followed by Bonferroni multiple comparisons (P<0.05). RESULTS: All six areas received branches from the masseteric nerve. Areas I and II (upper posterior and upper intermediate, respectively) had a significant higher number of nerve entries as compared to the remaining areas. CONCLUSION: The penetration areas of the masseteric nerve have been established and MTPs are found in the innervation zones, clinicians should focus initially on the regions of the penetration points, for diagnostics and therapeutic measures, such as injections, dry needling and soft tissue interventions. Anatomical study of nerve supply to the masseter muscle can provide useful additional knowledge to further understanding masticatory myofascial pain and to direct therapeutic interventions and diagnostic studies of temporomandibular junction dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have questioned whether the triceps brachii muscle tendon (TBMT) has a double or single insertion on the ulna. Aiming to provide an answer, we describe the anatomy of the TBMT and review a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) series of the elbow. METHODS: Forty-one elbows were dissected to assess the details of the triceps brachii insertion. Elbow plastination slices were analyzed to determine whether there was a space on the TBMT. Magnetic resonance imaging from the records of the authors were also obtained to demonstrate the appearance of the pre-tricipital space on MRI. RESULTS: A virtual space on the medial aspect near the TBTM insertion site in the olecranon was consistently found on anatomic dissections. It was a distal pre-tricipital space. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the appearance of the pre-tricipital space on MRI, and its extension was measured longitudinally either in elbow flexion or extension. There was no statistically significant difference between the measurements of this space in the right and left elbows or between flexion and extension (p > 0.05). The coefficient of variation was <10% for all measurements. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of this structure may be essential to avoid incorrect diagnosis and unnecessary therapeutic interventions.

PURPOSE: To identify whether the colon mucosa is affected by ten days of gastric restriction in an animal model. METHODS: An experimental model of gastric restriction was devised using rats. The animals were submitted to surgical gastrostomy, and a cylindrical loofah was inserted into the stomach. We studied 30 adult male Wistar rats divided into three groups: the stomach restriction group (R10); the sham group (S10), which underwent the same procedure except for the loofah insertion; and the control group (C10). The expression of neutral and acid mucins was evaluated using histochemical techniques. Goblet cells and protein content were compared between groups using generalized estimation equations (GEEs). Bonferroni's multiple comparison was applied to identify differences between the groups. All tests considered a 5% significance level. RESULTS: There was an increased expression of neutral mucins, acid mucins and goblet cells in the R10 group. Collagen was also enhanced in the R10 group. CONCLUSION: The colon mucosa is affected by ten days of gastric restriction in an animal model, increasing neutral mucins, acid mucins and collagen content with trophic maintenance.

Resumo: Introdução: Um estudo de 2010 apontou as necessidades futuras da educação médica, com conteúdos e práticas integrados, fomentada pela tecnologia educacional virtual e pela prioridade na competência, não no tempo. A anatomia, indistinta de outros fundamentos da medicina, enfrenta restrições à dissecção de cadáveres. Objetivo: Ensaio sobre o ensino da anatomia em contextos clínicos e com emprego de tecnologias. Método: Utilizaram-se a plataforma PubMed da National Library of Medicine e os descritores ((anatomy [MeSH Terms]) AND (method, teaching [MeSH Terms])) AND (surgery [MeSH Terms]). Resultado: Há indicação de 316 artigos no período 2000-2022 (junho de 2022). A principal pergunta sobre o ensino de anatomia refere-se à substituição da técnica de dissecção e, por consequência, do uso do cadáver. Estudos sugerem a manutenção do uso da dissecção, da prossecção e de maior uso de meios digitais e modelares. Conclusão: O material cadavérico deve ser garantido com maior uso da prossecção, com a dissecção sendo dirigida ou eletiva. Realidade virtual e material de prossecção devem ser assimilados como instrumentais e supervisionados por anatomistas qualificados e enriquecidos pela interpretação e aplicabilidade clínica.


Abstract: Introduction: A 2010 study pointed out the future needs of medical education, with integrated contents and practices, fostered by virtual educational technology and by prioritizing competence, not time. Anatomy, indistinguishable from other fundamentals of medicine, faces restrictions on cadaver dissection. Objective: Essay on the teaching of anatomy in clinical contexts and the use of technologies Method: The "pubmed" platform of the National Library of Medicine and descriptors ((anatomy[MeSH Terms]) AND (method, teaching[MeSH Terms])) AND (surgery[MeSH Terms]) were used. Result: There are indications of 316 articles in the period 2000-2022 (June 2022). The main question about the teaching of Anatomy is the replacement of the dissection technique and, consequently, the use of the cadaver. Studies suggest maintaining the use of dissection, prosection and greater use of digital and model means. Conclusion: Cadaveric material should be secured with greater use of prosection and dissection being directed or elective. Virtual reality and permanent material must be assimilated as instrumental and supervised by qualified anatomists and enriched by interpretation and clinical applicability.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the presence of lymph nodes and their relationships with demographic and anthropometric characteristics in a specific region, not yet described in anatomy compendiums, called by us Recurrent Carotid Recess (RCR) and located among the right recurrent laryngeal nerve, the right common carotid artery, and the right inferior thyroid artery. METHODS: 32 right cervical regions were harvested from cadavers within 24 hours post-mortem. The fibro-fatty tissue of the RCR was resected and prepared with formalin fixation. It was then subjected to an increasing sequence of alcohols (70%, 80%, and 90%), subsequently to a solution of Xylol, and finally to a solution of Methyl Salicylate, respecting the time required for each step. The macroscopic study was carried out on the diaphanized piece, observing the presence or not of lymph nodes. When present, they were photographed and their measurements were gauged with a digital caliper. In the microscopic study, hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to confirm the lymph node. RESULTS: the presence of lymph nodes was observed in 22 (68.75%) of the 32 specimens. The number of lymph nodes ranged from zero to six (mean of 1.56±0.29), per cadaver, and their mean size was 7.82mmx3.86mm (longitudinal x transversal diameters). CONCLUSION: the relationship between anthropometric data and presence of lymph nodes in the RCR (Fisher's exact test) was significant for medium-height individuals (p=0.03) and also white ones (p=0.04).


OBJETIVO: descrever a presença de linfonodos e suas relações com características demográficas e antropométricas em uma região específica ainda não descrita pelos compêndios de anatomia, por nós denominada de Recesso Carotídeo Recorrencial (RCR), localizada entre o nervo laríngeo recorrente direito, a artéria carótida comum direita e a artéria tireoidea inferior direita. MÉTODOS: foram dissecadas 32 regiões cervicais à direita de cadáveres com até 24 horas de post mortem. O tecido fibrogorduroso do RCR foi ressecado e preparado com fixação em formol. Em seguida, foi submetido a uma sequência crescente de álcoois (70%, 80% e 90%), posteriormente a uma solução de Xilol e, por fim, a uma solução de Salicilato de Metila, respeitando o tempo necessário de cada etapa. O estudo macroscópico foi realizado na peça diafanizada, observando a presença ou não de linfonodos. Quando presentes, foram fotografados e suas medidas foram aferidas com um paquímetro digital. No estudo microscópico, foi utilizada a coloração hematoxilina-eosina para confirmação do linfonodo. RESULTADOS: observou-se a presença de linfonodos em 22 dos 32 espécimes (68,75%), com o número de linfonodos por cadáver variando de zero a seis (média de 1,56±0,29) e tamanho com média de 7,82mmx3,86mm (diâmetros longitudinal x transversal). CONCLUSÃO: a relação entre dados antropométricos e presença de linfonodos no RCR (teste exato de Fischer) foi significante para indivíduos normolíneos (p=0,03) e também significante entre a etnia branca (p=0,04).

BACKGROUND: Recent studies in invertebrates have taught us that early cell membrane regeneration is determinant for axonal recovery and survival after trauma. Many authors obtained extraordinary results in neural regeneration using polyethylene glycol fusion protocols, which also involved microsutures and antioxidants. METHODS: Sixty rats were evaluated with functional and histological protocol after facial nerve neurotmesis. Groups A and B had their stumps coapted with microsuture after 24 hours of neurotmesis and groups C and D after 72 hours. In addition to the microstructure, groups B and D used the polyethylene glycol-fusion protocol for the modulation of the Ca+2 . RESULTS: At the sixth week, the latency of group D and duration of group B was lower than groups A and C (P = .011). The axonal diameter of the groups that used polyethylene glycol-fusion was higher than those who did not use polyethylene glycol-fusion (P ≤ .001). CONCLUSION: Although not providing a functional improvement, polyethylene glycol-fusion slowed down demyelination.

Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by pain and limited range of motion in joints and caused by muscular contracture related to dysfunctional motor end plates and myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). We aimed to observe the anatomical correlation between the clinically described MTrPs and the entry point of the branches of the inferior gluteal nerve into the gluteus maximus muscle. We dissected twenty gluteus maximus muscles from 10 human adult cadavers (5 males and 5 females). We measured the muscles and compiled the distribution of the nerve branches into each of the quadrants of the muscle. Statistical analysis was performed by using Student's t-test and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Although no difference was observed either for muscle measurements or for distribution of nerve branching among the subjects, the topography of MTrPs matched the anatomical location of the entry points into the muscle. Thus, anatomical substract of the MTrPs may be useful for a better understanding of the physiopathology of these disorders and provide basis for their surgical and clinical treatment.

Introduction: Human anatomy is essential for both clinical and surgical practice. Although the anterior jugular veins (AJVs) are of great importance in many surgeries, there are few studies addressing the anatomic variations of these vessels. This study highlights the venous drainage of the head and neck and the importance of anatomical variations in the AJVs. Objective: To observe and describe the anatomy of the jugular veins and evaluate whether there are patterns influenced by anthropometric factors or comorbidities. Methods: Neck dissections were performed on 30 cadavers. The anatomical characteristics of the AJVs were described considering diameter, midline distance, anastomosis, and presence of the jugular venous arch. Results: Cadavers of 14 women and 16 men were dissected. Ninety percent (90%) of the jugular veins had a rectilinear path and 37% presented anastomosis: H-shaped (63.7%),N-shaped (27.3% ), and Y-shaped (9%). In relation to the number of veins, 20% of the cadavers had only one AJV, 63.3% had two, 10% had three, and 6.7% presented a total of four. Mean distance between jugular veins was 12 mm, and most veins (60%) had a diameter <5 mm. There was no statistically significant correlation between anatomical variations and anthropometric factors. Conclusion: AJVs were always present in the dissected cadavers, and the configuration most commonly found was two veins, each <5 mm in diameter. They were less than 10 mm away from the cervical midline and, when they presented anastomosis, it was H-shaped in most cases.

We investigated the action of radiofrequency (RF) on the healing process after inducing experimental lesions of the Achilles tendon in rats. Wistar rats were surgically subjected to bilateral partial transverse sectioning of the Achilles tendon. The right tendon was treated with radiofrequency (RFT), whereas the left tendon served as a control (CT). On the third postoperative day, the rats were divided into three experimental groups consisting of ten rats each, which were treated with monopolar radiofrequency (Tonederm™) until they were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th or 28th days. The histological specimens were studied for inflammatory cell content, collagen types I and III, immunostaining and morphometry. Total collagen were biochemically analyzed and to evalute fibroblast and myofibroblast proliferation by vimentin and α-actin smooth muscle immunohistochemistry methods. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's t-test, the sign test and the Kruskal-Wallis test to compare tendons treated with radiofrequency with the non-treated tendons (α=5%; α=10%). Larger amounts of collagen I with hydroxyproline content and myofibroblast cells were clearly evident within 7 days (p<0.05). No difference was observed in the inflammatory cell content between the groups. We found better collagen arrangement with RF administration across the entire time studied. Radiofrequency administration preserves histoarchitecture and enhances collagen synthesis during the initial phases of cicatrization, suggesting that the treatment can provide improved stiffness during the most vulnerable phases of tendon healing. Clinical studies may include RF among the therapeutic tools in tendinous lesion management.
