RESUMO

Photo-induced synthesis was used for preparation of powder Zn(Cd,Mg)O:Ga scintillating nanocrystals featuring properties of solid solutions. Only ZnO phase was identified without any phase separation up to 10% of Cd after optimization of the preparation. Radioluminescence spectra show the exciton-related emission in UV spectral range with significant blue (ZnMgO:Ga) or red (ZnCdO:Ga) shifts. The emission wavelength is tunable by the Cd/Mg content. Defect-related emission is completely suppressed after treatment in reducing atmosphere. Photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence decays show extremely fast component. Subnanosecond decay together with band gap modulation make Zn(Cd,Mg)O:Ga good candidate for practical applications like X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (PDTX) or those requiring superfast timing.

RESUMO

Highly luminescent ZnO:Ga-polystyrene composite (ZnO:Ga-PS) with ultrafast subnanosecond decay was prepared by homogeneous embedding the ZnO:Ga scintillating powder into the scintillating organic matrix. The powder was prepared by photo-induced precipitation with subsequent calcination in air and Ar/H2 atmospheres. The composite was subsequently prepared by mixing the ZnO:Ga powder into the polystyrene (10 wt% fraction of ZnO:Ga) and press compacted to the 1 mm thick pellet. Luminescent spectral and kinetic characteristics of ZnO:Ga were preserved. Radioluminescence spectra corresponded purely to the ZnO:Ga scintillating phase and emission of polystyrene at 300-350 nm was absent. These features suggest the presence of non-radiative energy transfer from polystyrene host towards the ZnO:Ga scintillating phase which is confirmed by the measurement of X-ray excited scintillation decay with picosecond time resolution. It shows an ultrafast rise time below the time resolution of the experiment (18 ps) and a single-exponential decay with the decay time around 500 ps.

RESUMO

Recycled soda-lime glass powder is a sustainable material that is also often considered a filler in cement-based composites. The changes in the surface properties of the glass particles due to the treatments were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and optical spectroscopy. We have found that there is a relatively high level of carbon contamination on the surface of the glass particles (around 30 at.%), so plasma technology and thermal annealing were tested for surface cleaning. Room temperature plasma treatment was not sufficient to remove the carbon contamination from the surface of the recycled glass particles. Instead, the room temperature plasma treatment of recycled soda-lime glass particles leads to a significant enhancement in their room temperature photoluminescence (PL) by increasing the intensity and accelerating the decay of the photoluminescence. The enhanced blue PL after room-temperature plasma treatment was attributed to the presence of carbon contamination on the glass surface and associated charge surface and interfacial defects and interfacial states. Therefore, we propose blue photoluminescence under UV LED as a fast and inexpensive method to indicate carbon contamination on the surface of glass particles.

RESUMO

van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional materials have unveiled frontiers in condensed matter physics, unlocking unexplored possibilities in electronic and photonic device applications. However, the investigation of wide-gap, high-κ layered dielectrics for devices based on van der Waals structures has been relatively limited. In this work, we demonstrate an easily reproducible synthesis method for the rare-earth oxyhalide LaOBr, and we exfoliate it as a 2D layered material with a measured static dielectric constant of 9 and a wide bandgap of 5.3 eV. Furthermore, our research demonstrates that LaOBr can be used as a high-κ dielectric in van der Waals field-effect transistors with high performance and low interface defect concentrations. Additionally, it proves to be an attractive choice for electrical gating in excitonic devices based on 2D materials. Our work demonstrates the versatile realization and functionality of 2D systems with wide-gap and high-κ van der Waals dielectric environments.

RESUMO

CsPbBr3 nanocrystals have been identified as a highly promising material for various optoelectronic applications. However, they tend to coexist with Cs4PbBr6 phase when the reaction conditions are not controlled carefully. It is therefore imperative to understand how the presence of this phase affects the luminescence performance of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. We synthesized a mixed CsPbBr3-Cs4PbBr6 sample, and compared its photo- and radioluminescence properties, including timing characteristics, to the performance of pure CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The possibility of energy transfer between the two phases was also explored. We demonstrated that the presence of Cs4PbBr6 causes significant drop in radioluminescence intensity of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, which can limit possible future applications of Cs4PbBr6-CsPbBr3 mixtures or composites as scintillation detectors.

RESUMO

While doping of semiconductors or oxides is crucial for numerous technological applications, its control remains difficult especially when the material is reduced down to the nanometric scale. In this paper, we show that pulsed laser ablation of an undoped solid target in an aqueous solution containing activator ions offers a new way to synthesise doped-nanoparticles. The doping efficiency is evaluated for laser ablation of an undoped Gd2O3 target in aqueous solutions of EuCl3 with molar concentration from 10-5 mol L-1 to 10-3 mol L-1. Thanks to luminescence experiments, we show that the europium ions penetrate the core of the synthesised monoclinic Gd2O3 nanoparticles. We also show that the concentration of the activators in the nanoparticles is proportional to the initial concentration in europium ions in the aqueous solution, and a doping of about 1% ([Eu]/[Gd] atomic ratio) is reached. On the one hand, this work could open new ways for the synthesis of doped nanomaterials. On the other hand, it also raises the question of undesired penetration of impurities in laser-generated nanoparticles in liquids.

RESUMO

Eu-doped ternary sulfides of general formula ALnS2 (A = Na, K, Rb; Ln = La, Gd, Lu, Y) are presented as a novel interesting material family which may find usage as X-ray phosphors or solid state white light emitting diode (LED) lighting. Samples were synthesized in the form of transparent crystalline hexagonal platelets by chemical reaction under the flow of hydrogen sulfide. Their physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray excited fluorescence. Corresponding characteristics, including absorption, radioluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, and decay kinetics curves, were measured and evaluated in a broad temperature range (8-800 K). Calculations including quantum local crystal field potential and spin-Hamiltonian for a paramagnetic particle in D3d local symmetry and phenomenological model dealing with excited state dynamics were performed to explain the experimentally observed features. Based on the results, an energy diagram of lanthanide energy levels in KLuS2 is proposed. Color model xy-coordinates are used to compare effects of dopants on the resulting spectrum. The application potential of the mentioned compounds in the field of white LED solid state lighting or X-ray phosphors is thoroughly discussed.
