RESUMO

To add data on trace metal contamination of Humboldt penguins in the South Pacific, levels of trace metals (As, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd) and porphyrins (copro-, uro-, and proto-) in excreta of Humboldt penguins that inhabit some important nesting sites on the northern coast of Chile were determined. Fresh excreta were collected on Pan de Azúcar Island, Chañaral Island, and Cachagua Island, from December 2011 to January 2012. Concentration of metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, whereas porphyrins levels were measured by fluorimetric analysis. Concentrations (dry weight) of Cu (199.67 µg g(-1)), As (7.85 µg g(-1)), and Pb (12.78 µg g(-1)) were higher (p ≤ 0.05) in Cachagua Island. Colonies from Pan de Azúcar Island showed the highest levels of Hg (0.76 µg g(-1)), Cd (47.70 µg g(-1)), and Zn (487.10 µg g(-1)). Samples from Cachagua Island showed the highest (p ≤ 0.05) levels of copro- (2.16 nmol g(-1)), uro- (2.20 nmol g(-1)), and protoporphyrins (2.23 nmol g(-1)). There was a positive correlation between the metals As, Pb, and Cu with uro-, copro-, and protoporphyrins. The results indicated that penguin colonies from Cachagua Island are more exposed to metal contamination than penguin colonies from Pan de Azúcar and Chañaral Islands, thus being more likely to develop certain diseases caused by contamination with metals. Considering biomagnification, the metals detected in the excreta of Humboldt penguins can be a source of contamination from marine environments to terrestrial ecosystems, which could also affect other living organisms.

RESUMO

Estuarine saltmarshes from South America are exposed to several anthropogenic impacts due to diverse human activities that occur in both Atlantic/Pacific coastal environments. Primarily, chemical and petrochemical industries negatively impact saltmarshes generating inputs/deposition of non-essential trace elements (NTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. The native cordgrass Spartina densiflora inhabits a wide range of environments, from non-impacted to highly impacted areas. It is important to know its performance towards pollution in different environmental settings in South America. The content of Cd, Hg, Pb, and PAHs was determined in the roots and leaves of S. densiflora, bulk sediments (Bs), and rhizosediments (Rs) of estuaries from Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Differences in NTEs and PAHs levels were observed between Bs, Rs, and Spartina tissues from different saltmarsh areas. Differences in Rs/Bs (RHICF; rhizosediments concentration factors), roots/Bs (RCF; roots concentration factors) and leaves/roots (TF; translocation factors) factors were also found. In terms of NTEs, S. densiflora showed a high capability to increase levels in their Rs (RHICF>1) and bioconcentrate Cd in roots (RCF > 1), while no general translocation (TF < 1) was observed. Conversely, in cordgrass tissues, Bs and Rs, PAHs contents showed RCF and TF > 1, which was in line with lower levels in Rs related to Bs (RHICF<1) in most sites. These findings showed the S. densiflora capacity to retain, remove and/or translocate priority contaminants depending on intrinsic chemical characteristics and the level of contamination. The present study enables future considerations regarding the biomonitoring and phytoremediation/stabilization capabilities of Spartina in coastal environments.

RESUMO

Milk acts as a mean for transporting many essential substances from the mother to the child. In human beings, milk includes several predominant bacteria, such as staphylococci, streptococci, micrococci, lactobacilli, enterococci, lactococci and bifidobacteria. Besides, its intake favors the predominance of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in the child's intestinal microbiota. The present work explores the isolation and selection of lactobacilli strains with probiotic potential, focusing in their degree of hydrophobicity and antagonism against important gastrointestinal nosocomial pathogens. 98 lactobacilli were isolated from 48 breast milk samples, with most strains belonging to the obligately homofermentative group (36.7%). 63% of the isolated strains showed a high degree of hydrophobicity when tested on three solvents and were selected for detecting antimicrobial activity against gastrointestinal pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Shigella spp, Pseudomonas spp and Salmonella spp strains. When applying the agar diffusion test, many isolated strains presented inhibitory activity against pathogenic strains. We observed that: Salmonella enteriditis was the most inhibited pathogen, and the strains with the most inhibitory power were AR2 and O1 (both highly hydrophobic lactic acid bacteria), which showed an opposing effect against all nosocomial pathogens tested. Although more in vitro, in vivo or clinical data would be needed before any conclusion on the probiotic properties of the strains can be drawn, our results demonstrate that some of the tested strains may have good probiotic potential for their inclusion in products targeting infants.
