RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Across three experiments (N = 622), we investigated the effect of the future temporal perspective on wise reasoning within the context of interpersonal conflicts. METHOD: Studies 1 and 2 applied two heterogeneous measurements of wise reasoning: self-report and open-ended measurements. Participants reasoned about their recent interpersonal conflicts from a future (i.e., 1 year from now) or a present perspective. Similarly, Study 3 tested the relationship between various future temporal distances (i.e., 1 week, 1 year, 10 years, 30 years from now) and wise reasoning. RESULTS: The future temporal perspective significantly promoted wise reasoning compared to the present perspective, especially when the focus was 30 years in the future. Moreover, reasoning about a conflict event from a future perspective first might cause a carry-over effect on reasoning from the present perspective later. CONCLUSION: Future-oriented temporal perspective significantly improves wise reasoning.

RESUMO

Research reveals a bias for natural versus synthetic drugs. We sought to determine if this bias is associated with religiosity. Three cross-sectional studies (N = 1399 U.S. participants) were conducted to examine the impact of religiosity on the naturalness bias in the drug and vaccine domains. We assessed measures of religiosity, preferences for natural versus synthetic drugs and vaccines in hypothetical scenarios, and a health-related behavior (COVID-19 vaccination status). The results revealed that participants high versus low in religiosity had stronger preferences for natural versus synthetic drugs and vaccines. Furthermore, participants high versus low in religiosity were less likely to have taken the COVID-19 vaccine, and the natural drug bias was a mediator of this effect. Overall, participants higher in religiosity had a stronger preference for natural versus synthetic drugs and vaccines, and this preference had implications for health behavior.

RESUMO

The present work examines how culture and age interact to influence self-continuity and life satisfaction. Specifically, we compared Canadian and Chinese young (17-26 years old) and older adults (60-88 years old) in their sense of self-continuity and life satisfaction (N = 424). Consistent with past research, older adults reported greater self-continuity compared to their young counterparts, while cross-cultural comparisons showed that young Chinese reported greater self-continuity than young Canadians. In terms of life satisfaction, older adults again scored higher than younger adults, while cross-cultural comparisons indicated that, this time, young Canadians reported higher life satisfaction than young Chinese. Although the data were cross-sectional, indirect effects analyses showed that self-continuity mediated the effect of age on life satisfaction in both cultural groups, with the indirect effect stronger among Canadians than among Chinese. These findings highlight the importance of considering culture and age when examining psychological outcomes, and the potential of self-continuity as a mechanism to enhance overall life satisfaction.

RESUMO

Managing elastic properties of ABX3 type molecular perovskite ferroelectrics is critical to their future applications since these parameters determine their service durability and reliability in devices. The abundant structural and chemical viability of these compounds offer a convenient way to manipulate their elastic properties through a facile chemical approach. Here, the elastic properties and high-pressure behaviors of two isostructural perovskite ferroelectrics, MDABCO-NH4 I3 and MDABCO-KI3 (MDABCO = N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) is systematically investigated, via the first principles calculations and high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. It is show that the simple replacement of NH4 + by K+ on the B-site respectively results in up to 48.1%, 52.4%, and 56.3% higher Young's moduli, shear moduli and bulk moduli, which is attributed to the much stronger KI coordination bonding than NH4 …I hydrogen bonding. These findings demonstrate that it is possible to tune elastic properties of molecular perovskite ferroelectrics via simply varying the framework assembling interactions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: People can be categorized into one of four meaning-in-life profiles: High Presence High Search (HPHS), High Presence Low Search (HPLS), Low Presence High Search (LPHS), and Low Presence Low Search (LPLS).The main goal of this study is to provide a theoretical explanation for why Chinese people with different meaning-in-life profiles have different mental health levels than Western people, based on their emotional-cognitive-processing ability. METHOD: We adopted eye-movement analysis and recognition-judgment experimental paradigm concerning absolute-recognition judgment and relative-recognition judgment in our study. Moreover, we applied a multifactor and multilevel mixed-experimental design. We selected 118 participants for the experiments from the 788 Chinese college students who responded. RESULTS: Our results showed that HPHS individuals preferred positive-emotion pictures, LPLS individuals preferred negative-emotion pictures, HPLS individuals preferred positive- and neutral-emotion pictures, and LPHS individuals preferred neutral-emotion pictures. Moreover, HPHS individuals were better at accurately processing facial expression from pictures, while LPLS individuals lacked such ability. The fine-processing ability of HPLS and LPHS individuals was lower than that of HPHS yet higher than that of LPLS individuals. Moreover, the features of HPLS individuals were closer to HPHS, while those of LPHS individuals were closer to LPLS. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the hypothesis that meaning-in-life profiles have different immediate processing abilities and preferences regarding facial expression recognition and different emotional-cognitive-processing ability.

RESUMO

Nanoscale bioactive glass particles have greater bioactivity than microscale bioactive glass particles, due to their high-specific surface area and fast ion release rate in body fluid. However, preparation of bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGNPs) is difficult since calcium is not easy to be highly doped into the forming silica atom network, leading to an uneven distribution and a low content of calcium. In addition, BGNPs are usually prepared in a dilute solution to avoid agglomeration of the nanoparticles, which decreases the production efficiency and increases the cost. In this work, BGNPs are prepared by a method of the reactive flash nanoprecipitation (RFNP) as well as a traditional sol-gel method. The results indicate that the BGNPs by the RFNP present a smaller size, narrower size distribution, more uniform composition, and better bioactivity than those by the traditional sol-gel method. The obtained BGNPs have uniform compositions close to the feed values. The high and even doping of calcium in the BGNPs is achieved. This successful doping of calcium into nanoparticles by the RFNP demonstrates a promising way to effectively generate high-quality BGNPs for bone repairs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As the number of seniors around the world continues to proliferate, research devoted to enhancing our understanding of the specific needs of these individuals is warranted. The present research documents how the concept of time influences the preferences and behavioral intentions of older and younger adults in a consumer behavior context. METHODS: Study 1 had 99 young adults (under 25) and 82 seniors (over 65) rate persuasive advertisements varying in their temporal focus (past vs future vs control). Using a forced-choice paradigm, Study 2 had 98 young adults and 74 seniors choose between a product being advertised using a past versus future frame. RESULTS: Study 1 indicated that seniors responded more favorably to advertisements presented with a past-focus compared to future-focused and control ads, while younger adults rated the control ads higher than both the past- and future-focused ones. Study 2 reported that seniors opted for a past-focused product more frequently (68%) than a future-focused alternative (32%), with younger adults showing no pattern in their choices. CONCLUSIONS: Seniors may respond more favorably to persuasive messages framed with a past temporal focus, in turn influencing their preferences and decision-making across several domains including consumer behavior, health promotion, and leadership.

RESUMO

Meaning making is a useful coping strategy in negative situations. We investigated whether making meaning in negative experiences (MINE) would help people cope with COVID-19. We conducted a three-wave longitudinal study (N = 2364) three months before, during, and after the COVID-19 outbreak in China. Results showed that participants reported increased tendency of MINE during the COVID-19 outbreak than three months before the outbreak. Moreover, both initial MINE and the increased MINE predicted less psychological distress including depression, anxiety and stress, during and three months after the outbreak. Perceived benefits and costs of the COVID-19 mediated the long-term effect of MINE. These findings not only provide novel evidence for meaning making model but also shed light on the underlying mechanism, suggesting an effective strategy to cope with stressful events such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

The interactions of ions and molecules with material surface are highly dependent on the surface properties of the material. Therefore, the distribution of ions or molecules near the material surface may be affected by the surface properties. This phenomenon can be significant enough for controlling the structure of a material synthesized in the sub-micrometer scale confinement space of a template. This work confirms that inverse opals are perfect templates for offering confinement space, while their different surface properties can strongly affect ion and block copolymer distribution in the confinement space. This surface effect principle can be used for the controlled synthesis of colloids with complex composition. As an example, four kinds of mesoporous magnetic bioactive glass colloids with ordered mesopores, core-shell structure, open surface pores, or disordered mesopores are prepared by using polystyrene and carbon inverse opal templates. This work reveals that inverse opal templates possess great advantage in controlled synthesizing colloidal structures due to their surface effect on ions and molecules and confinement space.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ru (Rut) on angiogenesis, and the underlying regulation mechanism of signal transduction. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, adhesion inhibition experiment, migration inhibition experiment, and chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays were performed on models of angiogenesis. The potential targets of rutaecarpine (Ru) were reverse screened with Discovery Studio 2017. The interaction between the compound and target were detected by surface plasmon resonance (SPR), enzyme-activity experiment, and Western blot assay. The obtained results confirmed that Ru exhibited modest inhibitory activity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) (IC50 =16.54 ± 2.4 µM) and remarkable inhibitive effect against the migration and adhesion of HUVECs, as well as significant anti-angiogenesis activities in the CAM assay. The possible targets of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) were identified by computer-aided simulation. Results showed a good binding relationship between the ligand and target through molecular docking, and this relationship was confirmed by SPR analysis. Furthermore, enzyme-activity experiment and western blot assay showed that Ru remarkably inhibited the activity of VEGFR2 and blocked the VEGFR2-mediated Akt/ (mTOR)/p70s6k signaling pathway in vitro. Ru can be a potential drug candidate for cancer prevention and cancer therapy.

RESUMO

Beyond promoting hard tissue repairing, bioactive glasses (BGs) have also been proved to be beneficial for wound healing. Nano-scale BGs prepared by sol-gel method were found to have a better performance as they have a larger specific surface area. In this work, bioactive nanoparticles (nBPs) with mean diameter of 12 nm (BP-12) instead of conventional BGs were mixed with gelatin to form an easy-to-use hydrogel as a dressing for skin wound. It was found that the composite of BP-12 and gelatin could form a hydrogel (BP-12/Gel) under 25 °C, which showed pronounced thixotropy at a practically accessible shear rate, therefore become easy to be used for wound cover. In vitro, the composite hydrogel of BP-12 and gelatin had good biocompatibility with the fibroblast cells. In vivo, rapid cutaneous-tissue regeneration and tissue-structure formation within 7 days was observed in the wound-healing experiment performed in rats. This hydrogel is thus a promising easy-to-use wound dressing material.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to fabricate a novel nano-bioceramics incorporated lysozyme poly (d, l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microsphere. METHODS: The nano-bioceramics was used as a biodegradable and sustained-release antacid to stabilize the lysozyme in the drug release process. First, the nano-bioceramics were prepared by sol-gel method, and then were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, dynamic light scattering and in vitro degradation test. Second, the lysozyme PLGA microsphere incorporated with nano-bioceramic was fabricated by the S/W/O/W emulsion solvent evaporation method. The microsphere was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV circular dichroism (UV CD). Finally the in vitro drug release and bioactivity test was carried out. RESULTS: The composition of the nano-bioceramics was 58% SiO2, 36% CaO, 6% P2O5, and the average particle size was 295 nm. The nano-bioceramics incorporated lysozyme PLGA microspheres were prepared by the multi-emulsion method. The SEM results showed that the bioceramics was uniformly distributed in the PLGA microsphere. Results from in vitro lysozyme release test exhibited a prolonged release time for 1month. The FTIR and UVCD results suggested that the lysozyme in the drug release process had a similar secondary structure conformation to the native one. The Micrococcus lysodeikticus test showed that the microspheres incorporated with bioceramics provided long-term protein stability against the acidic environment resulted from PLGA's degradates and more than 90% of the lysozyme released over the 1 month period was preserved in a bioactive form. CONCLUSION: A novel bioceramics incorporated lysozyme PLGA microsphere was prepared with potentials for sustained protein release formulation.

RESUMO

Traditionally, the acquisition of 2D materials involved the exfoliation of layered crystals. However, the anisotropic bonding arrangements within 3D crystals indicate they are mechanically reminiscent of 2D counterparts and could also be exfoliated into nanosheets. This report delineates the preparation of 2D nanosheets from six representative 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through liquid-phase exfoliation. Notably, the cleavage planes of exfoliated nanosheets align perpendicular to the direction of the minimum elastic modulus (Emin) within the pristine 3D frameworks. The findings suggest that the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding forces of the exfoliated nanosheets can be correlated with the maximum elastic modulus (Emax) and Emin of the 3D frameworks, respectively. Emax influences the ease of cleaving adjacent layers, while Emin governs the ability to resist cracking of layers. Hence, a combination of large Emax and small Emin indicates an efficient exfoliation process, and vice versa. The ratio of Emax/Emin, denoted as Amax/min, is adopted as a universal index to quantify the ease of mechanical exfoliation for 3D MOFs. This ratio, readily accessible through mechanical experiments and computation, serves as a valuable metric for selecting appropriate exfoliation methods to produce surfactant-free 2D nanosheets from various 3D materials.

RESUMO

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) represents a common pathological state brought about by diabetes mellitus (DM). Patchouli alcohol (PatA) is known for its diverse advantageous effects, notably its anti-inflammatory properties and protective role against metabolic disorders. Despite this, the influence of PatA on DCM remains relatively unexplored. To explore the effect of PatA on diabetes-induced cardiac injury and dysfunction in mice, streptozotocin (STZ) was used to mimic type 1 diabetes in mice. Serological markers and echocardiography show that PatA treatment protects the heart against cardiomyopathy by controlling myocardial fibrosis but not by reducing hyperglycemia in diabetic mice. Discovery Studio 2017 software was used to perform reverse target screening of PatA, and we found that JAK2 may be a potential target of PatA. RNA-seq analysis of heart tissues revealed that PatA activity in the myocardium was primarily associated with the inflammatory fibrosis through the Janus tyrosine kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of the transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway. In vitro, we also found that PatA alleviates high glucose (HG) + palmitic acid (PA)-induced fibrotic and inflammatory responses via inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in H9C2 cells. Our findings illustrate that PatA mitigates the effects of HG + PA- or STZ-induced cardiomyopathy by acting on the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. These insights indicate that PatA could potentially serve as a therapeutic agent for DCM treatment.

RESUMO

Organic molecular electrode materials are promising candidates in batteries. However, direct application of small molecule materials usually suffers from drastic capacity decay and inefficient utilization of active materials because of their high solubility in organic electrolytes and low electrical conductivity. Herein, a simple strategy is found to address the above issues through coating the small-molecule organic materials on a commercialized carbon-coated aluminum foil (CCAF) as the enhanced electrode. Both the experimental and calculation results confirm that the relatively rough carbon coating on the aluminum foil not only exhibits superior adsorption capacity of small-molecule organic electrode materials with a tight contact interface but also provides continuous electronic conduction channels for the facilitated charge transfer and accelerated reaction kinetics. In addition, the carbon coating also inhibits Al corrosion in electrochemical process. As a result, by using the tetrahydroxy quinone-fused aza-phenazine (THQAP) molecule as an example, the THQAP-CCAF electrode exhibits an excellent rate performance with a high capacity of 220 and 180 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 2 A/g, respectively, and also a remarkable cyclability with a capacity retention of 77.3% even after 1700 cycles in sodium-ion batteries. These performances are much more superior than that of batteries with the THQAP on bare aluminum foil (THQAP-AF). This work provides a substantial step in the practical application of the small-molecule organic electrode materials for future sustainable batteries.

RESUMO

While brain imaging and electrophysiology play a central role in neuroscience research and in the evaluation of neurological disorders, a single noninvasive modality that offers both high spatial and temporal resolution is currently not available. Here we show in an acute epilepsy rat model that photoacoustic tomography (PAT) can noninvasively track seizure brain dynamics with both high spatial and temporal resolution, and at a depth that is clinically relevant. The noninvasive yet whole surface and depth capabilities of the PAT system allowed us to actually see what is happening during ictogenesis in terms of seizure onset and spread. Both seizure onset and propagation were tomographically detected at a spatial resolution of 150µm and a temporal resolution of 300ms, respectively. The current study lends support to the theory that seizure onset and spread involves a rich interplay between multiple cortical and subcortical brain areas during the onset and spread of epileptic seizures. Dynamical changes of vasculature during epileptiform events were also detected with high spatiotemporal resolution. Together, these findings suggest that PAT represents a powerful tool for noninvasively mapping seizure onset and propagation patterns, and the 'functional' connectivity within epileptic brain networks.

RESUMO

Building on the benign violation theory and self-construal theory, we conducted four studies to examine how culture and social distance would influence humor appreciation, sharing, and production. Study 1 found that Chinese participants appreciated and intended to share a joke involving distant others more than that involving close others. They also generated funnier titles for a joke involving distant others than close others. Studies 2a and 2b compared Chinese and Americans using various types of jokes, replicating the social distance effect among Chinese but finding little effect of social distance among Americans. In Study 3, interdependence-primed participants generated more humorous titles for a joke involving distant than close others, whereas independence-primed participants showed no effect of social distance. The research provides further support to the benign violation theory from a cultural perspective and has important implications for cross-cultural communications.

RESUMO

In this research, bioactive glass particles prepared by the reactive flash nanoprecipitation method (RFNP-BG particles) are used to crosslink sodium alginate to prepare biological sponges (SA-BG sponges) by freeze-drying. An experiment for the cross-linking mechanism confirms that the continuous release of Ca2+ from RFNP-BG is promoted by the crosslinking reaction and in turn leads to the gelation process of SA. Bioactive glass particles not only provide Ca2+ for the crosslinking of sodium alginate, but also enhance the mechanical properties of the SA-BG sponges. The results show that the elastic modulus of the SA-BG sponges increases from 0.026 MPa to 0.641 MPa, and the resistance to external force deformation is greatly improved; the thermal decomposition temperature increases from 105°C to 166°C; compared with a pure SA sponge, the water resistance is significantly improved. In vitro cell experiments show that the SA-BG sponges have a certain adverse effect on cell proliferation, but it is in an acceptable range. qPCR results show that the SA-BG sponges have a certain beneficial effect on promoting osteogenic gene expression. The SA-BG sponges have great application potential in the fields of medicine, hemostasis, and wound closure.

RESUMO

m-Cresol and p-cresol are widely used in medicine and pesticides as important chemical intermediates. They are generally produced as a mixture in industry and are difficult to separate due to the similarities in both chemical structures and physical properties. The adsorption behaviours of m-cresol and p-cresol on zeolites (NaZSM-5 and HZSM-5) with different Si/Al ratios have been compared by static experiments. Selectivity on NaZSM-5(Si/Al = 80) could be greater than 6.0. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated in detail. The kinetic data was correlated by PFO, PSO, and ID models, the NRMSE of which were 14.03%, 9.41%, and 21.11%, respectively. In the meanwhile, according to the NRMSE of Langmuir (6.01%), Freundlich (57.80%), D-R (1.1%), and Temkin (0.56%) isotherms, adsorption on NaZSM-5(Si/Al = 80) was mainly a monolayer and chemical adsorption process. It was endothermic for m-cresol and exothermic for p-cresol. The Gibbs free energy, entropy, and enthalpy were calculated accordingly. The adsorption of cresol isomers on NaZSM-5(Si/Al = 80) were both spontaneous, and it was exothermic (ΔH = -37.11kJ/mol) for p-cresol while endothermic (ΔH = 52.30kJ/mol) for m-cresol. Additionally, ΔS were respectively -0.05 and 0.20 kJ·mol-1·K-1for p-cresol and m-cresol, which were both close to zero. The adsorption was mainly driven by enthalpy. The result of breakthrough further demonstrated m-cresol and p-cresol could be separated effectively by NaZSM-5(Si/Al = 80). Additionally, the selectivity increased from 7.53 to 14.72 after four cycles regeneration with 9.95% and 53.96% decreases in the adsorption amounts for m-cresol and p-cresol, respectively. In conclusion, NaZSM-5(Si/Al = 80) could be a feasible adsorbent for the separation of m-cresol and p-cresol.
