RESUMO

High-temperature affordable flexible polymer-based pressure sensors integrated with repeatable early fire warning service are strongly desired for harsh environmental applications, yet their creation remains challenging. This work proposed an approach for preparing such advanced integrated sensors based on silver nanoparticles and an ammonium polyphosphate (APP)-modified laminar-structured bulk wood sponge (APP/Ag@WS). Such integrated sensors demonstrated excellent fire warning performance, including a short response time (minimum of 0.44 s), a long-lasting alarm time (>750 s), and reliable repeatability. Moreover, it achieved high-temperature affordable flexible pressure sensing that exhibited an almost unimpaired working range of 0-7.5 kPa and a higher sensitivity (in the low-pressure range, maximum to 226.03 kPa-1) after fire. The high stability was attributed to reliable structural elasticity, and the wood-derived amorphous carbon is capable of repeatable fire warnings. Finally, a Ag@APP/WS-based wireless fire alarm system that realized reliable house fire accident detection was demonstrated, showing great promise for smart firefighting application.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and the risk of developing hypertension. METHODS: A cohort study of 14,883 Chinese adults without hypertension at baseline with were followed for an average of 8.9 years. Dietary intakes of BCAAs, including Ile, Leu, and Val, were collected using 3-day 24-h meal recall and household condiment weighing. Cox proportional hazards regression, restricted cubic splines, interaction analysis, and sensitivity analysis were used to assess the relationship between dietary BCAAs and risk of developing self-reported hypertension, adjusting for age, gender, region, body mass index (BMI), smoking and drinking status, physical activity, energy intake, salt intake. RESULTS: Among 14,883 study subjects, 6386(42.9%) subjects aged ≥ 45 years at baseline, 2692 (18.1%) had new-onset hypertension during the study period, with a median age of 56 years. High levels of dietary BCAAs were associated with an increased risk of new-onset hypertension. Compared with the 41st-60th percentile, multivariable adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for new-onset hypertension was 1.16 (95% CI 1.01-1.32) for dietary BCAAs 61st-80th percentiles, 1.30 (1.13-1.50) for 81st-95th, 1.60 (1.32-1.95) for 96th-100th. The cut-off value of new-onset hypertension risk, total BCAAs, Ile, Leu, and Val were 15.7 g/day, 4.1 g/day, 6.9 g/day, 4.6 g/day, respectively, and the proportion of the population above these intake values were 13.9%, 13.1%, 15.4%, and 14.4%, respectively. Age, BMI, and salt intake had an interactive effect on this relationship (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: There was a significant positive association between total dietary BCAAs, Ile, Leu, Val intake and the risk of developing hypertension, after adjustment for confounders. This relationship was influenced by age, BMI, and salt intake. Further research is needed to clarify the mechanism and potential role of BCAAs in the pathogenesis of hypertension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity and insulin resistance are associated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and increased risk of heart failure. Cardiometabolic index (CMI) and triglyceride glucose (TyG) are new indexes to assess visceral obesity and insulin resistance, respectively. The study aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of these indexes for identifying LVDD individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Overall, 1898 asymptomatic individuals were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants underwent anthropometrics, serum biochemical evaluation, and echocardiography. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that both indexes were independent determinants of diastolic parameters among females; while for males, CMI and TyG were not associated with A velocity. In the multivariate logistic analysis, the proportion of LVDD in the third and fourth quartiles of CMI remained significantly greater than that in the lowest quartile in females (Q3 vs. Q1: odds ratio (OR) = 2.032, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.181-3.496; Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 2.393, 95% CI: 1.347-4.249); while in males, the incidence of LVDD was significantly greater only in the fourth quartile. For TyG, the presence of LVDD in the fourth quartile was significantly greater in both genders. The discriminant values between the CMI (AUC: 0.704, 95% CI: 0.668-0.739) and TyG (AUC: 0.717, 95% CI: 0.682-0.752) were similar in females. Both indexes performed better in females than in males to identify LVDD. CONCLUSION: The CMI and TyG might both serve as effective tools to identify LVDD in routine health check-ups in primary care, mainly in females. With simpler parameters, the CMI could be utilized in medically resource-limited areas.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common type of hereditary retinal dystrophy, approximately 25%-45% of cases remain without a molecular diagnosis. von Willebrand factor A domain containing 8 (VWA8) encodes a mitochondrial matrix-targeted protein; its molecular function and pathogenic mechanism in RP remain unexplained. METHODS: Family members of patients with RP underwent ophthalmic examinations, and peripheral blood samples were collected for exome sequencing, ophthalmic targeted sequencing panel and Sanger sequencing. The importance of VWA8 in retinal development was demonstrated by a zebrafish knockdown model and cellular and molecular analysis. RESULTS: This study recruited a Chinese family of 24 individuals with autosomal-dominant RP and conducted detailed ophthalmic examinations. Exome sequencing analysis of six patients revealed heterozygous variants in VWA8, namely, the missense variant c.3070G>A (p.Gly1024Arg) and nonsense c.4558C>T (p.Arg1520Ter). Furthermore, VWA8 expression was significantly decreased both at the mRNA and protein levels. The phenotypes of zebrafish with VWA8 knockdown are similar to those of clinical individuals harbouring VWA8 variants. Moreover, VWA8 defects led to severe mitochondrial damage, resulting in excessive mitophagy and the activation of apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: VWA8 plays a significant role in retinal development and visual function. This finding may provide new insights into RP pathogenesis and potential genes for molecular diagnosis and targeted therapy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Frailty and Circadian Syndrome (CircS) are prevalent among the elderly, yet the link between them remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the association between CircS and frailty, particularly focusing on the impact of various CircS components on frailty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2018. The 49-item Frailty Index (FI) was employed to assess frailty. To understand the prevalence of CircS in relation to frailty, we applied three multivariate logistic regression models. Additionally, subgroup and interaction analyses were performed to investigate potential modifying factors. RESULTS: The study included 8,569 participants. In fully adjusted models, individuals with CircS showed a significantly higher risk of frailty compared to those without CircS (Odds Ratio [OR] = 2.18, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.91-2.49, p < 0.001). A trend of increasing frailty risk with greater CircS component was observed (trend test p < 0.001). Age (p = 0.01) and race (p = 0.02) interactions notably influenced this association, although the direction of effect was consistent across subgroups. Sensitivity analysis further confirmed the strength of this relationship. CONCLUSION: This study identifies a strong positive correlation between CircS and frailty in the elderly. The risk of frailty escalates with an increasing number of CircS components. These findings highlight the intricate interplay between circadian syndrome and frailty in older adults, offering valuable insights for developing targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Frailty has become a public health challenge in China. To investigate the association of foods consumption and physical activity with prefrailty and frailty among older Chinese adults in urban communities. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study from February to July 2023, 1183 older adults aged between 65y-88y were enrolled from urban communities in Chongqing and Shandong province, China. Frailty Index (FI) was applied to measure prefrailty and frailty. Partial proportional odds model was used to assess the association between foods consumption, physical activity and prefrailty/frailty. RESULTS: Higher Dietary Diversity Score (DDS), (OR=0.61, 95% CI=0.46-0.80; OR=0.47, 95% CI=0.28-0.79), Consuming animal-based foods ≥2 times/day (OR=0.62, 95% CI=0.47-0.82; OR=0.54, 95% CI=0.33-0.88), soy products ≥2 times/week (OR=0.69, 95% CI=0.53-0.89; OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.31-0.84), fresh vegetables ≥2 times/day (OR=0.42, 95% CI=0.31-0.57; OR=0.41, 95% CI=0.23-0.72), and nuts ≥2 times/week (OR=0.71, 95% CI=0.55-0.91; OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.32-0.85) was associated with a lower risk of prefrailty and frailty. In addition, higher frequency and longer duration of walking (OR=0.61, 95% CI=0.42-0.88; OR=0.63, 95% CI=0.48-0.81), exercise (OR=0.48, 95% CI=0.35-0.64; OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.32-0.61) per week were significantly associated with lower risk of prefrailty. Furthermore, higher frequency and longer duration of walking (OR=0.42, 95% CI=0.25-0.72; OR=0.46, 95% CI=0.29-0.74), and housework (OR=0.39, 95% CI=0.24-0.65; OR=0.57, 95% CI=0.34-0.96) per week, were significantly associated with lower frailty. CONCLUSIONS: Higher DDS and higher frequency of animal-based foods, soy products, fresh vegetables, and nuts consumption is significantly associated with lower risk of prefrailty and frailty. Additionally, walking and exercising are significantly associated with lower risk of prefrailty, while walking and doing housework is significantly associated with lower frailty.

RESUMO

Objective: Prior studies have established a connection between albuminuria and various inflammatory reactions, highlighting that an increase in C-reactive protein by 1 mg/L increases the likelihood of albuminuria by 2%. Recent investigations indicate a positive correlation between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and increased urinary protein excretion. In addition, elevated levels of the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) also correlate with a higher prevalence of albuminuria. The aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) offers a more comprehensive indicator of inflammation, providing an extensive assessment of systemic inflammatory status compared to SII and SIRI. Yet, the specific relationship between AISI and albuminuria remains unclear. This study aims to explore this association in U.S. adults. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 2007-2018, excluding pregnant women and individuals under 18. Cases with missing data on AISI, urinary albumin concentration, and other covariates were also excluded. AISI was computed using the formula: AISI=(platelet count×neutrophil count×monocyte count)/lymphocyte count. Albuminuria was defined as the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio exceeding 30 mg/g. Continuous variables were presented in the form of the mean±standard error, and categorical variables in percentages. We utilized weighted t-tests and chi-square tests for baseline comparisons. We applied weighted multivariable logistic regression and generalized additive models (GAM) to explore the association between AISI and albuminuria and to assess potential nonlinear relationships. Results: The study included 32273 participants, with an average age of (46.75±0.24) years old. The cohort comprised 48.73% males and 51.27% females. The prevalence of albuminuria was 9.64%. The average logarithmic value of log2AISI was 7.95±0.01, and were categorized into tertiles as follows: Quartile 1 (Q1) (4.94 to 7.49), Q2 (7.49 to 8.29), and Q3 (8.29 to 10.85). As log2AISI increased, so did the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and albuminuria, all showing statistically significant increases (P<0.001). Similarly, the use of antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, and hypoglycemic drugs was also more prevalent (P<0.001). Statistically significant differences were observed across the three groups concerning age, race and ethnicity, formal education, alcohol consumption, smoking status, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, HbA1c, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, creatinine, uric acid, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P<0.05). However, no significant differences were noted in the total cholesterol or the sex ratios among the groups. The association between log2AISI and albuminuria was assessed using weighted multivariable logistic regression, and the detailed results are presented in Table 2. In model 1, without adjusting for covariates, each unit increase in log2AISI was associated with a 32% increase in the risk of albuminuria (odds ratio [OR]=1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.27-1.38, P<0.001). Model 2 was adjusted for age, gender, race, and education level, and showed a similar trend, with each unit increase in log2AISI associated with a 31% increased risk (OR=1.31, 95% CI: 1.26-1.37, P<0.001). Model 3, which was further adjusted for all covariates, revealed that each unit increase in log2AISI was associated with a 20% increase in the risk of albuminuria (OR=1.20, 95% CI: 1.15-1.26, P<0.001). The study also transformed log2AISI from a continuous to a categorical variable for analysis. Compared with Q1, the risk of albuminuria in Q3, after adjusting for all covariates, significantly increased (OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.22-1.55, P<0.001). Q2 also demonstrated a higher risk compared with Q1 (OR=1.13, 95% CI: 1.06-1.36, P=0.004). The trend test indicated a dose-effect relationship between increasing log2AISI and the rising risk of albuminuria. GAM revealed a nonlinear relationship between log2AISI and albuminuria, with distinct trends noted between sexes. Segmented regression based on turning points showed significant effects among women, although the slope difference between the segments was not significant. In men, a significant threshold effect was observed; below the log2AISI of 7.25, increases in log2AISI did not enhance the risk of albuminuria, but above this threshold, the risk significantly increased. As part of a sensitivity analysis, weighted multivariable logistic regression was performed by changing the outcome variable to macroalbuminuria and adjusting for all covariates. The analysis showed that for every unit increase in log2AISI, the risk of developing macroalbuminuria increased by 31% (OR=1.31, 95% CI: 1.15-1.49, P<0.001). Compared with Q1, the risk of albuminuria in Q3 increased by 69% (OR=1.69, 95% CI: 1.27-2.25, P<0.001), and in Q2, it increased by 40% (OR=1.40, 95% CI: 1.03-1.92, P=0.030). Subgroup analysis and interaction results showed that the positive association between AISI and proteinuria risk was stronger in men than in women. Similarly, the association was stronger in people with hypertension compared with those with normal blood pressure, and higher in overweight people compared with those of normal weight. Furthermore, smokers and drinkers showed a stronger positive association between AISI and the risk of proteinuria than non-smokers and non-drinkers do. These results suggest that sex, blood pressure, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption interact with AISI to influence the risk of proteinuria. Conclusion: There is a robust positive association between AISI and increased risks of albuminuria in US adults. As log2AISI increases, so does the risk of albuminuria. However, further validation of this conclusion through large-scale prospective studies is warranted.

RESUMO

Metal ions on surfaces of various materials as bulk matrices, doped structural units, or functionalized active sites play critical roles in the establishment of physical and chemical properties. Characterization of surface-bound metal ions and metal ion-coupled electron transfer are urgently needed for the determination of material structures as well as for understanding the relationship to macroscopic properties and technological applications. We present here a mass spectrometric (MS) technique that allows the monitoring of metal ion-coupled electron transfer along with spatial distributions, identities, quantities, valences, redox activities, and associated anions. It is based on the coordination of metal ions with chelators that are redox/photo active. Upon the irradiation of a focused laser beam, metal ions on material surfaces that are covered with chelators are evaporated, ionized, and detected with MS. This technique clearly reveals ligand-metal/metal-ligand and ligand-bridged electron transfers through MS or tandem MS/MS experiments. MS images of metal ions on material surfaces with the spatial resolution down to the sub-micrometer level have been obtained. It has been applied to the monitoring of hot electron transfer, leftover positive metal ions in localized surface plasmon resonance, and photocatalytic activities of crystalline facets of TiO2.

RESUMO

Lipids represent a large family of compounds with highly diverse structures that are involved in complex biological processes. A photocatalytic technique of on-tissue epoxidation of C=C double bonds has been developed for in situ mass spectrometric identification and spatial imaging of positional isomers of lipids. It is based on the plasmonic hot-electron transfer from irradiated gold nanowires to redox-active organic matrix compounds that undergo bond cleavages and generate hydroxyl radicals in nanoseconds. Intermediate radical anions and negative fragment ions have been unambiguously identified. Under the irradiation of a pulsed laser of the third harmonic of Nd3+:YAG (355 nm), the hydroxyl radical-driven epoxidation of unsaturated lipids with different numbers of C=C bonds can be completed in nanoseconds with high yields of up to 95%. Locations of C=C bonds were recognized with diagnostic fragment ions that were produced by either collision with an inert gas or auto-fragmentation resulting from the impact of energetic hot electrons and vibrational excitation. This technique has been applied to the analysis of breast cancer tissues of mice models without extensive sample processes. It was experimentally demonstrated that C=C bonds may be formed at different positions of not only regular mono- or poly-unsaturated fatty acids but also other odd-numbered long-chain fatty acids.

RESUMO

The cause of epilepsy with or without developmental disorders was unidentified in a significant proportion of patients. Whole exome sequencing was performed in three unrelated patients with early-onset epilepsy, with or without developmental delay and intellectual disability. We identified de novo heterozygous variants (p.Arg119Trp, p.Val99_Ser102del, c.260_263 + 11delinsGCCCA) in the ATP6V0C gene, which encodes a subunit of vacuolar ATPase. Three-dimensional protein modeling showed that the variant p.Arg119Trp in ATP6V0C affected the hydrogen bonds with the 115th and 123rd residues, and the protein stability. The p.Val99_Ser102del and c.260_263 + 11delinsGCCCA variants in the other two patients resulted in a loss of function with microdeletion or splicing effects. Their seizures and psychomotor developmental outcomes were different, and all patients had a good prognosis. Our study provides evidence that de novo heterozygous ATP6V0C variants are related to epilepsy and associated with or without developmental delay.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Certain foods and food groups could positively or negatively impact serum uric acid (SUA) levels. However, evidence on the holistic dietary strategy to prevent and control hyperuricemia (HUA) development remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research work was to explore the association of dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet with SUA levels and odds of HUA among Chinese adults. METHODS: This research premise included 66,427 Chinese adults aged 18 and above who were part of the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance in 2015. Dietary consumptions were assessed via the household condiment weighing approach and a three-day, 24-hour dietary recall. Total fat, saturated fat, calcium, protein, potassium, cholesterol, magnesium, fiber, and sodium were all adopted to calculate the DASH score (score range, 0-9). The associations of DASH score with SUA levels and odds of HUA were evaluated using multiple linear and logistic regression models, respectively. RESULTS: We established that a higher DASH score was linked with a lower SUA levels (ß = - 0.11; 95% CI: - 0.12, - 0.1; p < 0.001) and odds of HUA (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.87; p < 0.001) after adjustment for age, sex, ethnicity, education status, marital status, health behaviours and health factors. The association of the DASH diet with odds of HUA was stronger among men (p-interaction = 0.009), non-Han Chinese (p-interaction< 0.001) as well as rural residents (p-interaction< 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results illustrate that the DASH diet was remarkably negatively with SUA levels and odds of HUA in the Chinese adult population.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic oxidation is considered one of the most effective ways to remove formaldehyde from indoor air. However, the use of powder photocatalysts is limited by their low adsorption capacity and strong aggregation tendency. Hence, there is a need for a composite material with good cycling stability and high degradation efficiency. In the present study, a unique wood-based composite is produced by arranging Cu-TiO2 nanoparticles on porous structured wood. The porous structure of wood can adsorb formaldehyde, and the abundant functional groups on the surface can act as a reaction platform for anchoring the Cu-TiO2 nanoparticles. Cu doping facilitates electron interaction between TiO2 and Cu, promotes the transfer of charge carriers, lowers the electron-hole recombination rate, and improves the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of formaldehyde. The photocatalytic efficiency of the wood-based composites was highest (85.59%) when the n(Cu)/n(Ti) ratio was 7%. After nine cycles, the wood composites still had a high degradation rate, indicating good recyclability. Overall, this wood composite is an eco-friendly and promising material for indoor air filtration.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dietary fiber intake status and analyze the relationship between dietary fiber and glucose metabolic disorder of the elderly in China. METHODS: Data were collected from the participants of Chinese adult chronic diseases and nutrition surveillance in 2015. General information were collected by standardized questionnaires, anthropometric index and blood pressure of respondents were measured according to standard method. Food intake was collected by three consecutive day 24 h dietary recalls, dietary fiber was calculated through China food composition. Fasting venous blood were collected to measure glucose, HbA1C, and other related biochemical index. Subjects were divided into three groups: normal glucose(NG, normal glucose), pre-diabetes(Pre-DM, pre-diabetes mellitus) and diabetes(T2DM, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between dietary fiber intake and Pre-DM as well as T2DM. RESULTS: A total of 20 996 elderly people aged 60 years and above were included. There 10 773 cases were males(51.3%) and 10 223 cases were females(48.7%), the age of both gender were(68.21±6.26) years and(67.67±6.26) years. A total of 6526 cases of pre-diabetes were detected in 20 996 elderly participants with detection rate of 31.1%. There 3274 cases were male and 3252 cases were female, the detection rates of both genders were 30.4% and 31.8%, respectively. While 1572 participants were detected as T2DM(784 of males and 788 of females), the detection rate of T2DM was 7.5%, 7.3% for males and 7.7% for females. There were significant differences in mean age, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, HbA1c level among different dietary intake groups(P<0.005). With the increase of dietary fiber intake, the proportion of overweight and obesity, central obesity and dyslipidemia showed an increasing trend(P<0.05), and the proportion of hypertension showed a decreasing trend(P<0.000 1). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, compared to participants with lowest fiber intake, participants in subgroups of lower, minor lower, and higher fiber intake were associated with decreased risk of pre-diabetes, the OR and 95%CI were(OR=0.911, 95%CI 0.835-0.993), (OR= 0.861, 95%CI 0.790-0.938) and(OR= 0.913, 95%CI 0.838-0.994), respectively. However, there was only a statistically significant negative association between the higher intake of dietary fiber and T2DM(OR = 0.848, 95%CI 0.726-0.991). CONCLUSION: Dietary fiber intake was negatively related with diabetes and pre-diabetes mellitus. The risk of glucose metabolic disorder was decreased with the increase of dietary fiber intake.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the macronutrient and food intake of diabetics aged 45 years and above in China. METHODS: The research data was based on the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance in 2015. The dietary nutrition status of diabetics living in community was investigated by questionnaire, condiments weighing and 3 days-24 hours dietary questionnaire. Assessment was compared with the recommended amount of macronutrient energy supply ratio in The guideline for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China(2020 edition). The macronutrient energy supply ratio of patients with different types of diabetes was evaluated and their food intake was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The median of daily intake of total energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate were 1585 kcal, 50.1 g, 62.4 g and 200.1 g, respectively. The energy ratios of protein, fat and carbohydrate were 12.6%, 36.3% and 52.1%, respectively. In diabetics, the proportion of protein, fat and carbohydrate energy ratios that meet the recommendations in The guideline for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China(2020 edition) were 20.5%, 21.7% and 40.4%, respectively. CONCLUSION: There is an unreasonable macronutrient energy ratio in the diet of diabetic over 45 years old in China, which mainly shows that the proportion of protein energy supply ratio in most diabetics is low, and the proportion of fat energy ratio exceeds the standard is high.

RESUMO

A cell-based ambient Venturi autosampling device was established for the monitoring of dynamic cell secretions in response to chemical stimulations in real time with temporal resolution on the order of a second. Detection of secretory products of cells and screening of bioactive compounds are primarily performed on an ambient autosampling probe and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. It takes advantage of the Venturi effect in which the fluid flowing through an inlet capillary tube is automatically fed into a parallel array of multiple outlet capillaries. Cells are incubated inside the inlet capillary tube that is connected with either a syringe pump or liquid chromatography (LC) for the transfer of single compounds or mixtures, respectively. Secretory products were continuously pushed into the outlet capillaries and then spotted into a compressed thin film of the matrix material 9-aminoacridine for MALDI mass spectrometric imaging. In physiological pH, without the use of high voltages and without the use of chemical derivatizations, this platform can be applied to the direct assay of neurotransmitters or other secretory products released from cells in response to the stimulation of individual compounds or LC-separated eluates of natural mixtures. It provides a new way to identify bioactive compounds with a detection limit down to 0.04 fmol/pixel.

RESUMO

When a metamaterial (MM) is embedded in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) cavity, the ultra-strong coupling between the MM plasmons and the photons in the PC cavity gives rise to two new polariton modes with high quality factor. Here, we investigate by simulations whether such a strongly coupled system working in the terahertz (THz) frequency range has the potential to be a better sensor than a MM (or a PC cavity) alone. Somewhat surprisingly, one finds that the shift of the resonance frequency induced by an analyte applied to the MM is smaller in the case of the dual resonator (MM and cavity) than that obtained with the MM alone. However, the phase sensitivity of the dual resonator can be larger than that of the MM alone. With the dielectric perturbation theory - well established in the microwave community - one can show that the size of the mode volume plays a decisive role for the obtainable frequency shift. The larger frequency shift of the MM alone is explained by its smaller mode volume as compared with the MM-loaded cavity. Two main conclusions can be drawn from our investigations. First, that the dielectric perturbation theory can be used to guide and optimize the designs of MM-based sensors. And second, that the enhanced phase sensitivity of the dual resonator may open a new route for the realization of improved THz sensors.

RESUMO

Finding out the physical structure of neuronal circuits that governs neuronal responses is an important goal for brain research. With fast advances for large-scale recording techniques, identification of a neuronal circuit with multiple neurons and stages or layers becomes possible and highly demanding. Although methods for mapping the connection structure of circuits have been greatly developed in recent years, they are mostly limited to simple scenarios of a few neurons in a pairwise fashion; and dissecting dynamical circuits, particularly mapping out a complete functional circuit that converges to a single neuron, is still a challenging question. Here, we show that a recent method, termed spike-triggered non-negative matrix factorization (STNMF), can address these issues. By simulating different scenarios of spiking neural networks with various connections between neurons and stages, we demonstrate that STNMF is a persuasive method to dissect functional connections within a circuit. Using spiking activities recorded at neurons of the output layer, STNMF can obtain a complete circuit consisting of all cascade computational components of presynaptic neurons, as well as their spiking activities. For simulated simple and complex cells of the primary visual cortex, STNMF allows us to dissect the pathway of visual computation. Taken together, these results suggest that STNMF could provide a useful approach for investigating neuronal systems leveraging recorded functional neuronal activity.

RESUMO

Fractionation of essential oils is technically challenging due to enormous scaffold diversities and structural complexities as well as difficulties in the implementation of the fractionation in the gas phase. Packing beads with multi-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures have been developed herein to pack fractional columns for atmospheric distillations. Activated alumina beads were coated with a porous TiO2 thin film. Growth of Cu-BTC (benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) crystals in resultant porous surfaces leads to the generation of new nanopores and increased metal centers for differential coordination with diverse components of essential oils. The TiO2 thin film is not only an integral part of the composites but also induces the oriented growth of Cu-BTC metal organic framework (MOF) crystals through coordinative interactions. These Al2O3@TiO2@Cu-BTC MOF beads show very strong absorptive capability for major components of essential oils, except for a single cyclic ether eucalyptol with steric hindrances. The eucalyptol was fractionated by using the column packed with those modified alumina beads from raw materials of Artemisia argyi, and Rosmarinus officinalis with high purities up to 96% and 93%, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is challenging to predict the outcome of the pregnancy when fetal heart activity is detected in early pregnancy. However, an accurate prediction is of importance for obstetricians as it helps to provide appropriate consultancy and determine the frequency of ultrasound examinations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the convolutional neural network (CNN) in the prediction of spontaneous miscarriage risk through the analysis of early ultrasound gestational sac images. METHODS: A total of 2196 ultrasound images from 1098 women with early singleton pregnancies of gestational age between 6 and 8 weeks were used for training a CNN for the prediction of the miscarriage in the retrospective study. The patients who had positive fetal cardiac activity on their first ultrasound but then experienced a miscarriage were enrolled. The control group was randomly selected in the same database from the fetuses confirmed to be normal during follow-up. Diagnostic performance of the algorithm was validated and tested in two separate test sets of 136 patients with 272 images, respectively. Performance in prediction of the miscarriage was compared between the CNN and the manual measurement of ultrasound characteristics in the prospective study. RESULTS: The accuracy of the predictive model was 80.32% and 78.1% in the retrospective and prospective study, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for classification was 0.857 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.793-0.922) in the retrospective study and 0.885 (95%CI, 0.846-0.925) in the prospective study, respectively. Correspondingly, the predictive power of the CNN was higher compared with manual ultrasound characteristics, for which the AUCs of the crown-rump length combined with fetal heart rate was 0.687 (95%CI, 0.587-0.775). CONCLUSIONS: The CNN model showed high accuracy for predicting miscarriage through the analysis of early pregnancy ultrasound images and achieved better performance than that of manual measurement.

RESUMO

The complex refractive index for low-loss materials is conventionally extracted by either approximate analytical formula or numerical iterative algorithm (such as Nelder-Mead and Newton-Raphson) based on the transmission-mode terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). A novel 4-layer neural network model is proposed to obtain optical parameters of low-loss materials with high accuracy in a wide range of parameters (frequency and thickness). Three materials (TPX, z-cut crystal quartz and 6H SiC) with different dispersions and thicknesses are used to validate the robustness of the general model. Without problems of proper initial values and non-convergence, the neural network method shows even smaller errors than the iterative algorithm. Once trained and tested, the proposed method owns both high accuracy and wide generality, which will find application in the multi-class object detection and high-precision characterization of THz materials.
