RESUMO

Background: Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS), also known as ovarian vein syndrome, is one of the key causes of chronic pelvic pain. The present study combined pelvic floor myofascial manipulation, uterine conditioning, and improved Kegel exercise for the treatment of a PCS patient with pelvic inclination to provide a reference for clinical therapy. Case description: A 29-year-old female was admitted to our hospital on 20th April 2023, with the main complaint being repeated lower abdominal and lumbosacral pain with frequent urination (urine volume < 200 ml/time), external genital itching accompanied by increased secretion for more than 5 years. The patient was treated with pelvic floor myofascial manipulation, uterine conditioning, and improved Kegel exercise 6 times. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination, pelvic X-ray examination, overall posture assessment, and related functional status were observed and evaluated. Conclusions: After comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation treatment containing pelvic floor myofascial manipulation, uterine conditioning, and improved Kegel training, the symptoms and signs of the patient were significantly improved, and the effect was obvious.

RESUMO

CA is a plant derivative with antibacterial and antiviral pharmacological effects, however, the therapeutic effect of CA on Klebsiella pneumonia and its mechanism study is still unclear. A rat KP model was established in vitro, a pneumonia cell model was established in vivo, the histopathological changes in the lungs were observed by HE staining after CA treatment, the expression of relevant inflammatory factors was detected by ELISA, the changes in the expression of proteins related to the AhR-Src-STAT3-IL-10 signaling pathway were detected by Western blot and immunofluorescence in the lungs, and the interactions between the proteins were verified by COIP relationship. The results showed that CA was able to attenuate the injury and inflammatory response of lung tissues, and molecular docking showed that there were binding sites between CA and AhR, and COIP demonstrated that AhR interacted with both STAT3 and Ser. In addition, CA was able to up-regulate the expression levels of pathway-related proteins of AhR, IL-10, p-Src, and p-STAT3, and AhR knockdown was able to reduce LPS-induced inflammatory responses and up-regulate pathway-related proteins, whereas CA treatment of AhR-knockdown-treated A549 cells did not show any statistically significant difference compared with the AhR knockdown group, demonstrating that CA exerts its pharmacological effects. These findings elucidated the mechanism of CA in the treatment of KP and demonstrated that CA is a potential therapeutic agent for KP.

RESUMO

Ink-jet-printed silk, a premium textile material, was achieved by utilizing a bio-based gardenia blue dye. However, the sharpness of the printing pattern is difficult to control due to the limited water-retention capacity of silk. To address this issue, three polysaccharide derivatives, namely, sodium alginate (SA), low-viscosity hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC-I), and high-viscosity hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC-II), were employed as thickeners to modify the silk by the dipping-padding method. Firstly, the preparation of the gardenia blue ink and the rheology assessment of the thickener solution were conducted. Furthermore, the impacts of different thickeners on the micro-morphology, element composition, and hydrophilicity of the silk, along with the wetting behavior of the ink on the silk, were analyzed comparatively in order to identify an appropriate thickener for preserving pattern outlines. Lastly, the color features, color fastness, and wearing characteristics of the printed silk were discussed to evaluate the overall printing quality. Research results showed that the optimized ink formulation, comprising 12% gardenia blue, 21% alcohols, and 5.5% surfactant, met the requirements for ink-jet printing (with a viscosity of 4.48 mPa·s, a surface tension of 34.12 mN/m, and a particle size of 153 nm). The HPMC-II solution exhibited prominent shear-thinning behavior, high elasticity, and thixotropy, facilitating the achievement of an even modification effect. The treatment of the silk with HPMC-II resulted in the most notable decrease in hydrophilicity. This can be attributed to the presence of filled gaps and a dense film on the fibers' surface after the HPMC-II treatment, as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the HPMC-II treatment introduced the highest content of hydrophobic groups on the fiber surface. The reduced hydrophilicity inhibited the excessive diffusion and penetration of gardenia blue ink, contributing to a distinct printing image and enhanced apparent color depth. Moreover, the printed silk demonstrated qualified color fastness to rubbing and soaping (exceeding grade four), a soft handle feeling, an ignorable strength loss (below 5%), and a favorable air/moisture penetrability. In general, the surface modification with the HPMC-II treatment has been proven as an effective strategy for upgrading the image quality of bio-based dye-printed silk.

RESUMO

For protein fibers, polycarboxylic acids represent a green strategy to enhance durability without using formaldehyde. This study evaluated the physical and flame retardant properties of silk fabrics treated with three formaldehyde-free crosslinkers: citric acid (CA), 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA), and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA). Results showed that these acids bond with silk protein through esterification and amidation, improving washing durability. Particularly, PBTCA integrates phosphorus into silk, boosting flame retardancy. While BTCA led to the highest weight gain and improved wrinkle recovery, it negatively impacted the tensile strength and softness of silk fabrics. Conversely, PBTCA adeptly balanced enhanced wrinkle resistance with minimal effects on tensile strength and softness, and least affected the silk fabrics' whiteness, thus preserving its aesthetic appeal. All crosslinkers improved flame retardancy, but PBTCA displayed superior performance, achieving a limiting oxygen index of 32.4 % at an 80 g/L concentration. In vertical burning tests, PBTCA treated silk fabrics showed reductions in damage length and demonstrated self-extinguishing properties, qualifying them for a higher flame retardant grade. Phosphorus in PBTCA promotes char formation during combustion, essential for effective flame retardation and smoke reduction. This research highlights the exceptional potential of silk treated with PBTCA, showcasing its suitability for demanding applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, a group of muscle-related disorders, leads to the gradual decline and weakening of skeletal muscle over time. Recognizing the pivotal role of gastrointestinal conditions in maintaining metabolic homeostasis within skeletal muscle, we hypothesize that the effectiveness of the myogenic programme is influenced by the levels of gastrointestinal hormones in the bloodstream, and this connection is associated with the onset of sarcopenia. METHODS: We first categorized 145 individuals from the Emergency Room of Taipei Veterans General Hospital into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups, following the criteria established by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. A thorough examination of specific gastrointestinal hormone levels in plasma was conducted to identify the one most closely associated with sarcopenia. Techniques, including immunofluorescence, western blotting, glucose uptake assays, seahorse real-time cell metabolic analysis, flow cytometry analysis, kinesin-1 activity assays and qPCR analysis, were applied to investigate its impacts and mechanisms on myogenic differentiation. RESULTS: Individuals in the sarcopenia group exhibited elevated plasma levels of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) at 1021.5 ± 313.5 pg/mL, in contrast to non-sarcopenic individuals with levels at 351.1 ± 39.0 pg/mL (P < 0.05). Although it is typical for GLP-1 levels to rise post-meal and subsequently drop naturally, detecting higher GLP-1 levels in starving individuals with sarcopenia raised the possibility of GLP-1 influencing myogenic differentiation in skeletal muscle. Further investigation using a cell model revealed that GLP-1 (1, 10 and 100 ng/mL) dose-dependently suppressed the expression of the myogenic marker, impeding myocyte fusion and the formation of polarized myotubes during differentiation. GLP-1 significantly inhibited the activity of the microtubule motor kinesin-1, interfering with the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) to the cell membrane and the dispersion of mitochondria. These impairments subsequently led to a reduction in glucose uptake to 0.81 ± 0.04 fold (P < 0.01) and mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production from 25.24 ± 1.57 pmol/min to 18.83 ± 1.11 pmol/min (P < 0.05). Continuous exposure to GLP-1, even under insulin induction, attenuated the elevated glucose uptake. CONCLUSIONS: The elevated GLP-1 levels observed in individuals with sarcopenia are associated with a reduction in myogenic differentiation. The impact of GLP-1 on both the membrane translocation of GLUT4 and the dispersion of mitochondria significantly hinders glucose uptake and the production of mitochondrial ATP necessary for the myogenic programme. These findings point us towards strategies to establish the muscle-gut axis, particularly in the context of sarcopenia. Additionally, these results present the potential of identifying relevant diagnostic biomarkers.

RESUMO

Carbon nanofibers (CFs) have been widely applied as electrodes for energy storage devices owing to the features of increased contact area between electrodes and electrolyte, and shortened transmission route of electrons. However, the poor electrochemical activity and severe waste of space hinder their further application as supercapacitors electrodes. In this work, MnO2-x nanoflowers restricted and epitaxial growth in/out carbon nanofibers (MnO2/MnO@CF) were prepared as excellent electrode materials for supercapacitors. With the synergistic effect of uniquely designed structure and the introduction of MnO and MnO2 nanoflowers, the prepared interconnected MnO2/MnO@CF electrodes demonstrated satisfactory electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the MnO2/MnO@CF//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor offered an outstanding long-term cycle stability. Besides, kinetic analysis of MnO2/MnO@CF-90 was conducted and the diffusion-dominated storage mechanism was well-revealed. This concept of "internal and external simultaneous decoration" with different valence states of manganese oxides was proven to improve the electrochemical performance of carbon nanofibers, which could be generalized to the preparation and performance improvement of other fiber-based electrodes.

RESUMO

A prolonged second stage of vaginal delivery increases the risk of shoulder dystocia, unnecessary episiotomies and cesarean sections. However, no standardized method has been proposed to tackle this issue. The effects of pelvic floor myofascial manipulation intervention during the second stage of labor in primiparas and its prognostic value in neonatal postpartum outcomes remain unknown. In the present study, a total of 60 primiparas who were expecting a vaginal delivery in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College (Haikou, China) between October 2021 and January 2022 were selected. These women were randomly assigned to a control group (standard intrapartum care) or an experimental group (pelvic floor myofascial manipulation for 15-20 min during the second stage of labor along with standard intrapartum care) using a random number table, with 28 patients in each group. There was no significant difference in age, gestational time or body mass index between the two groups before delivery, indicating that the baseline data were comparable. The second stage of labor duration, forced breath-holding time and postpartum hemorrhage volume in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group. The pain visual analog scale scores, fatigue scores and neonatal Apgar scores in the experimental group were also significantly lower than those in the control group. The rate of episiotomy in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant. In conclusion, pelvic floor myofascial manipulation intervention during the second stage of labor for primiparas with vaginal delivery can reduce the duration of the second stage of labor, the amount of bleeding during labor and the pain during labor. Meanwhile, it has the potential to improve neonatal outcomes.

RESUMO

Nickel cobaltate/NiCo-layered double hydroxides (NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH) as energy storage materials offer considerable potential for various applications. However, many of current methods for synthesizing NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH suffer from long synthesis times, complex preparation process, and high temperatures and high pressures. In this study, we present a green, simple, and efficient approach known as assisted liquid-phase plasma electrolysis, which realizes the rapid fabrication of ultra-fine NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH nanoparticle-decorated electrospun carbon nanofibers (NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH/CNFs) composites. Ultra-fine NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH nanoparticles (<70 nm) are uniformly deposited on the CNF surface. The CNFs are intertwined to form a highly conductive three-dimensional mesh structure, which synergizes the NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH nanoparticles with a high specific capacitance in favor of ion/electron transport efficiency. In addition, the cooperative effect between the two phases of NiCo2O4 and NiCo-LDH further improves the electrochemical properties. The NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH/CNFs composites exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1534.7 F/g at 1 A/g and a capacitance retention of 93.9 % after 5000 cycles. An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor using activated carbon and NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH/CNFs composites achieves an energy density of 33.8 Wh/kg at a power density of 400 W/kg and a capacitance retention of 93.0 % after 5000 cycles. Notably, two series-connected NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH/CNFs ASC supercapacitors can light up an LED bulb, which maintains a certain brightness even after 50 min. Hence, this work provides a new and efficient route for synthesizing carbon-based NiCo2O4/NiCo-LDH composites for use as advanced energy storage materials.
