Introduction: Non-specialist emergency medicine qualifications are an important step in developing the specialty of emergency medicine. The Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (Dip PEC) of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa is one of the oldest registrable qualifications. Reviewing its changing role over time has lessons for academics developing Emergency Medicine training in Africa. Methods: Through a series of meetings and stakeholder engagements, the Council of the College of Emergency Medicine conducted a three year review of the qualification focusing on the curriculum, assessment processes, success rate and role of the qualification in the South African medical context. A survey of the perceptions of graduates over the last six years was also conducted. Results: The survey showed candidate numbers increased dramatically from 2011 to 2017, resulting in an entry cap. Lessons identified included ensuring that the qualification is responsive to the state of development of emergency medicine in the country, needing aligned and valid assessment processes and maintaining the value of the qualification in context. Discussion: Emergency medicine qualifications are dynamic in and of themselves and how they relate to their context. Program designers must prioritize ongoing evaluation from the start.

INTRODUCTION: Global usage of educational Emergency Medicine (EM) podcasts is popular and ever-increasing. This study aims to explore the desired content, format and delivery characteristics of a potential educational, context-specific Southern African EM podcast, by investigating current podcast usages, trends and preferences among Southern African EM registrars of varying seniority. METHODS: We developed an electronic survey - using a combination of existing literature, context-specific specialist-training guidance, and input from local experts - exploring preferred podcast characteristics among EM registrars from four Southern African universities. RESULTS: The study's response rate was 75%, with 24 of the 39 respondents being junior registrars. Ninety-four percent (94%) of respondents used EM podcasts as an educational medium: 64% predominantly using podcasts to supplement a personal EM study program. The primary mode of accessing podcasts was via personal mobile devices (84%). Additionally, respondents preferred a shorter podcast duration (5-15 min), favoured multimedia podcasts (56%) and showed an apparent aversion toward recorded faculty lectures (5%). Eighty-two percent (82%) of respondents preferred context-specific podcast content, with popular topics including toxicology (95%), cardiovascular emergencies (79%) and medico-legal matters (74%). Just-in-Time learning proved an unpopular learning strategy in our study population, despite its substantial educational value. CONCLUSION: Podcast-usage proved to be near-ubiquitous among the studied Southern African EM registrars. Quintessentially, future context-specific podcast design should cater for mobile device-use, shorter duration podcasts, more video content, context-specific topics, and content optimised for both Just-in-Time learning.

White rust of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), caused by Albugo tragopogonis (Pers.) S. F. Gray, appeared in South African fields not previously planted to sunflower. Spread to these fields from infested fields was unlikely, as some of the newly affected fields were planted out of season and were more than 300 km away from other sunflower production fields. Several reports of this nature led us to investigate the possibility of seed transmission of the causal organism. Extensive colonization of sunflower heads by A. tragopogonis was observed in field trials and breeding nurseries. Head infections consisted of two distinct lesion types. White rust pustules, typical of those formed on abaxial sides of leaves, were recognized on abaxial sides of involucral bracts. Grayish, localized lesions containing dark-colored oospores of the fungus, similar to those formed on stems and petioles (1), were produced in sub-epidermal tissue and extended 3 to 5 mm deep into receptacles. Colonization of seeds was found in only a few lines. Oospores were produced in the pericarps and testae of seeds. No oospores or hyphae, however, were observed in the embryo. This is the first report of A. tragopogonis being seed-borne. Since the incidence of seed infection is low, spread of disease to infested fields is expected to be insignificant. Of more concern, however, is the possible long-range dissemination of the fungus by means of infected seed into regions or countries where the disease has not been previously reported.
