RESUMO

The use of mid-infrared spectroscopy to characterise the chemistry of icy interstellar and Solar System environments will be exploited in the near future to better understand the chemical processes and molecular inventories in various astronomical environments. This is, in part, due to observational work made possible by the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope as well as forthcoming missions to the outer Solar System that will observe in the mid-infrared spectroscopic region (e.g., the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer and the Europa Clipper missions). However, such spectroscopic characterisations are crucially reliant upon the generation of laboratory data for comparative purposes. In this paper, we present an extensive mid-infrared characterisation of SO2 ice condensed at several cryogenic temperatures between 20 and 100 K and thermally annealed to sublimation in an ultrahigh-vacuum system. Our results are anticipated to be useful in confirming the detection (and possibly thermal history) of SO2 on various Solar System bodies, such as Ceres and the icy Galilean moons of Jupiter, as well as in interstellar icy grain mantles.

Time-frequency analysis of EEG data is a key step in exploring the internal activities of the human brain. Studying oscillations is an important part of the analysis, as they are thought to provide the underlying mechanism for communication between neural assemblies. Traditional methods of analysis, such as Short-Time FFT and Wavelet Transforms, are not ideal for this task due to the time-frequency uncertainty principle and their reliance on predefined basis functions. Empirical Mode Decomposition and its variants are more suited to this task as they are able to extract the instantaneous frequency and phase information but are too time consuming for practical use. Our aim was to design and develop a massively parallel and performance-optimized GPU implementation of the Improved Complete Ensemble EMD with the Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) algorithm that significantly reduces the computational time (from hours to seconds) of such analysis. The resulting GPU program, which is publicly available, was validated against a MATLAB reference implementation and reached over a 260× speedup for actual EEG measurement data, and provided predicted speedups in the range of 3000-8300× for longer measurements when sufficient memory was available. The significance of our research is that this implementation can enable researchers to perform EMD-based EEG analysis routinely, even for high-density EEG measurements. The program is suitable for execution on desktop, cloud, and supercomputer systems and can be the starting point for future large-scale multi-GPU implementations.

We introduce a novel population genetic approach suitable to model the origin and relationships of populations, using new computation methods analyzing Hg frequency distributions. Hgs were selected into groups which show correlated frequencies in subsets of populations, based on the assumption that correlations were established in ancient separation, migration and admixture processes. Populations are defined with this universal Hg database, then using unsupervised artificial intelligence, central vectors (CVs) are determined from local condensations of the Hg-distribution vectors in the multidimensional point system. Populations are clustered according to their proximity to CVs. We show that CVs can be regarded as approximations of ancient populations and real populations can be modeled as weighted linear combinations of the CVs using a new linear combination algorithm based on a gradient search for the weights. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated by comparing Copper Age populations of the Carpathian Basin to Middle Age ones and modern Hungarians. Our analysis reveals significant population continuity since the Middle Ages, and the presence of a substrate component since the Copper Age.

Laboratory studies of the radiation chemistry occurring in astrophysical ices have demonstrated the dependence of this chemistry on a number of experimental parameters. One experimental parameter which has received significantly less attention is that of the phase of the solid ice under investigation. In this present study, we have performed systematic 2 keV electron irradiations of the amorphous and crystalline phases of pure CH3OH and N2O astrophysical ice analogues. Radiation-induced decay of these ices and the concomitant formation of products were monitored in situ using FT-IR spectroscopy. A direct comparison between the irradiated amorphous and crystalline CH3OH ices revealed a more rapid decay of the former compared to the latter. Interestingly, a significantly lesser difference was observed when comparing the decay rates of the amorphous and crystalline N2O ices. These observations have been rationalised in terms of the strength and extent of the intermolecular forces present in each ice. The strong and extensive hydrogen-bonding network that exists in crystalline CH3OH (but not in the amorphous phase) is suggested to significantly stabilise this phase against radiation-induced decay. Conversely, although alignment of the dipole moment of N2O is anticipated to be more extensive in the crystalline structure, its weak attractive potential does not significantly stabilise the crystalline phase against radiation-induced decay, hence explaining the smaller difference in decay rates between the amorphous and crystalline phases of N2O compared to those of CH3OH. Our results are relevant to the astrochemistry of interstellar ices and icy Solar System objects, which may experience phase changes due to thermally-induced crystallisation or space radiation-induced amorphisation.

The detection of ozone (O3) in the surface ices of Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon, and of the Saturnian moons Rhea and Dione, has motivated several studies on the route of formation of this species. Previous studies have successfully quantified trends in the production of O3 as a result of the irradiation of pure molecular ices using ultraviolet photons and charged particles (i.e., ions and electrons), such as the abundances of O3 formed after irradiation at different temperatures or using different charged particles. In this study, we extend such results by quantifying the abundance of O3 as a result of the 1 keV electron irradiation of a series of 14 stoichiometrically distinct CO2:O2 astrophysical ice analogues at 20 K. By using mid-infrared spectroscopy as our primary analytical tool, we have also been able to perform a spectral analysis of the asymmetric stretching mode of solid O3 and the variation in its observed shape and profile among the investigated ice mixtures. Our results are important in the context of better understanding the surface composition and chemistry of icy outer Solar System objects, and may thus be of use to future interplanetary space missions such as the ESA Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer and the NASA Europa Clipper missions, as well as the recently launched NASA James Webb Space Telescope.

We applied ancient DNA methods to shed light on the origin of ancient Hungarians and their relation to modern populations. Hungarians moved into the Carpathian Basin from the Eurasian Pontic steppes in the year 895 AD as a confederation of seven tribes, but their further origin remains obscure. Here, we present 17 mtDNA haplotypes and four Y-chromosome haplogroups, which portray the genetic composition of an entire small cemetery of the first generation Hungarians. Using novel algorithms to compare these mitochondrial DNA haplogroups with other ancient and modern Eurasian data, we revealed that a significant portion of the Hungarians probably originated from a long ago consolidated gene pool in Central Asia-South Siberia, which still persists in modern Hungarians. Another genetic layer of the early Hungarians was obtained during their westward migrations by admixing with various populations of European origin, and an important component of these was derived from the Caucasus region. Most of the modern populations, which are genetically closest relatives of ancient Hungarians, today speak non-Indo-European languages. Our results contribute to our understanding of the peopling of Europe by providing ancient DNA data from a still genetically poorly studied period of medieval human migrations.

In this study, we analyse 27-dimensional mtDNA haplogroup distributions of 174 Eurasian, North-African and American populations, including numerous ancient data as well. The main contribution of this work was the description of the haplogroup distribution of recent and ancient populations as compounds of certain hypothetic ancient core populations immediately or indirectly determining the migration processes in Eurasia for a long time. To identify these core populations, we developed a new iterative algorithm determining clusters of the 27 mtDNA haplogroups studied having strong rank correlation among each other within a definite subset of the populations. Based on this study, the current Eurasian populations can be considered as compounds of three early core populations regarding to maternal lineages. We wanted to show that a simultaneous analysis of ancient and recent data using a new iterative rank correlation algorithm and the weighted SOC learning technique may reveal the most important and deterministic migration processes in the past. This technique allowed us to determine geographically, historically and linguistically well-interpretable clusters of our dataset having a very specific, hardly classifiable structure. The method was validated using a 2-dimensional stepping stone model.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infections are one of the common diseases in the primary health care. AIM: To analyse patterns of ambulatory antibiotic use in acute cystitis. METHOD: Antibiotic use data was based on national-level prescription turnovers. Patterns of antibiotic use were evaluated by prescribing quality indicators. The content of different national guidelines for treatment of acute cystitis and adherence to these guidelines were also evaluated. RESULTS: For the treatment of acute cystitis quinolones were used predominantly. Norfloxacin (26%) and ciprofloxacin (19%) were prescribed most commonly. The use of internationally recommended agents such as sulphonamides, nitrofurans and fosfomycin shared 15%, 7% and 2%, respectively. The average adherence rate to national guidelines was 66% and certain weak points (e.g. controversial content) of the national guidelines were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: Antibiotic use in acute cystitis seems to be suboptimal in Hungary. Considering actual local antibiotic resistance patterns, a new national guideline should be worked out for acute cystitis treatment.

The positive identification of the molecular components of interstellar icy grain mantles is critically reliant upon the availability of laboratory-generated mid-infrared absorption spectra which can be compared against data acquired by ground- and space-borne telescopes. However, one molecule which remains thus far undetected in interstellar ices is H2S, despite its important roles in astrochemical and geophysical processes. Such a lack of a detection is surprising, particularly in light of its relative abundance in cometary ices which are believed to be the most pristine remnants of pre-solar interstellar ices available for study. In this paper, we present the results of an extensive and quantitative mid-infrared spectroscopic characterisation of H2S ices deposited at 20, 40, and 70 K and thermally processed to sublimation in an ultrahigh-vacuum system. We anticipate our results to be useful in confirming the detection of interstellar H2S ice using high-resolution and high-sensitivity instruments such as the James Webb Space Telescope, as well as in the identification of solid H2S in icy environments in the outer Solar System, such as comets and moons.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare Hungarian antibiotic use in acute cystitis with the internationally developed disease-specific quality indicators and with the national guidelines. METHODS: The aggregated national-level data on systemic antibiotic use was purchased from the National Health Fund Administration. The study period was January-June 2007. Antibiotic use in acute cystitis was evaluated by means of the defined daily dose (DDD) methodology. Quality indicators of antibiotic prescribing proposed by the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC) team were the usage rate of recommended antibacterials and the usage rate of quinolones. Adherence to the available national guidelines was determined. RESULTS: For acute cystitis, 1.06 DDD per 1000 inhabitant-days antibiotic use was recorded. The ESAC recommended antibiotic use in cystitis (23.3%) was well below the recommended range (80-100%). The consumption of fluoroquinolones was 56.2%, which exceeded the recommended range (0-5%) more than 10 times. The adherence rate to the Hungarian guidelines ranged between 59.3% and 74.2%. CONCLUSIONS: As both investigated disease-specific quality indicators were well outside the acceptable ranges, some inappropriateness of antibiotic use in cystitis seems to be present. Adherence rates to the different national guidelines were also moderate, but due to the general recommendation of quinolones, values should be interpreted with caution. New transparent guidelines - issued by the Hungarian Society of Family Physicians - should be introduced in Hungary, recommending quinolones only for second-line therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The motor-related bioelectric brain activity of healthy young and old subjects was studied to understand the effect of aging on motor execution. A visually cued finger tapping movement paradigm and high-density EEG were used to examine the time and frequency characteristics. METHODS: Twenty-two young and 22 healthy elderly adults participated in the study. Repeated trials of left and right index finger movements were recorded with a 128-channel EEG. Event-Related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP), Inter Trial Coherence (ITC), and Functional Connectivity were computed and compared between the age groups. RESULTS: An age-dependent theta and alpha band ERSP decrease was observed over the frontal-midline area. Decrease of beta band ERSP was found over the ipsilateral central-parietal regions. Significant ITC differences were found in the delta and theta bands between old and young subjects over the contralateral parietal-occipital areas. The spatial extent of increased ITC values was larger in old subjects. The movement execution of older subjects showed higher global efficiency in the delta and theta bands, and higher local efficiency and node strengths in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands. CONCLUSION: As functional compensation of aging, elderly motor networks involve more nonmotor, parietal-occipital, and frontal areas, with higher global and local efficiency, node strength. ERSP and ITC changes seem to be sensitive and complementary biomarkers of age-related motor execution.

The analysis and processing of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals is a vital step in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. ECG offers a non-invasive and risk-free method for monitoring the electrical activity of the heart that can assist in predicting and diagnosing heart diseases. The manual interpretation of the ECG signals, however, can be challenging and time-consuming even for experts. Machine learning techniques are increasingly being utilized to support the research and development of automatic ECG classification, which has emerged as a prominent area of study. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network model with residual blocks (DNN-RB) to classify cardiac cycles into six ECG beat classes. The MIT-BIH dataset was used to validate the model resulting in a test accuracy of 99.51%, average sensitivity of 99.7%, and average specificity of 98.2%. The DNN-RB method has achieved higher accuracy than other state-of-the-art algorithms tested on the same dataset. The proposed method is effective in the automatic classification of ECG signals and can be used for both clinical and out-of-hospital monitoring and classification combined with a single-lead mobile ECG device. The method has also been integrated into a web application designed to accept digital ECG beats as input for analyses and to display diagnostic results.

The purine nucleobases adenine and guanine are complex organic molecules that are essential for life. Despite their ubiquitous presence on Earth, purines have yet to be detected in observations of astronomical environments. This work therefore proposes to study the infrared spectra of purines linked to terrestrial biochemical processes under conditions analogous to those found in the interstellar medium. The infrared spectra of adenine and guanine, both in neat form and embedded within an ice made of H2O:NH3:CH4:CO:CH3OH (10:1:1:1:1), were analysed with the aim of determining which bands attributable to adenine and/or guanine can be observed in the infrared spectrum of an astrophysical ice analogue rich in other volatile species known to be abundant in dense molecular clouds. The spectrum of adenine and guanine mixed together was also analysed. This study has identified three purine nucleobase infrared absorption bands that do not overlap with bands attributable to the volatiles that are ubiquitous in the dense interstellar medium. Therefore, these three bands, which are located at 1255, 940, and 878 cm-1, are proposed as an infrared spectral signature for adenine, guanine, or a mixture of these molecules in astrophysical ices. All three bands have integrated molar absorptivity values (ψ) greater than 4 km mol-1, meaning that they should be readily observable in astronomical targets. Therefore, if these three bands were to be observed together in the same target, then it is possible to propose the presence of a purine molecule (i.e., adenine or guanine) there.

Computer-aided comparison of folk music from different nations is one of the newest research areas. We were intrigued to have identified some important similarities between phylogenetic studies and modern folk music. First of all, both of them use similar concepts and representation tools such as multidimensional scaling for modelling relationship between populations. This gave us the idea to investigate whether these connections are merely accidental or if they mirror population migrations from the past. We raised the question; does the complex structure of musical connections display a clear picture and can this system be interpreted by the genetic analysis? This study is the first to systematically investigate the incidental genetic background of the folk music context between different populations. Paternal (42 populations) and maternal lineages (56 populations) were compared based on Fst genetic distances of the Y chromosomal and mtDNA haplogroup frequencies. To test this hypothesis, the corresponding musical cultures were also compared using an automatic overlap analysis of parallel melody styles for 31 Eurasian nations. We found that close musical relations of populations indicate close genetic distances (<0.05) with a probability of 82%. It was observed that there is a significant correlation between population genetics and folk music; maternal lineages have a more important role in folk music traditions than paternal lineages. Furthermore, the combination of these disciplines establishing a new interdisciplinary research field of "music-genetics" can be an efficient tool to get a more comprehensive picture on the complex behaviour of populations in prehistoric time.

Laboratory experiments have confirmed that the radiolytic decay rate of astrochemical ice analogues is dependent upon the solid phase of the target ice, with some crystalline molecular ices being more radio-resistant than their amorphous counterparts. The degree of radio-resistance exhibited by crystalline ice phases is dependent upon the nature, strength, and extent of the intermolecular interactions that characterise their solid structure. For example, it has been shown that crystalline CH3OH decays at a significantly slower rate when irradiated by 2 keV electrons at 20 K than does the amorphous phase due to the stabilising effect imparted by the presence of an extensive array of strong hydrogen bonds. These results have important consequences for the astrochemistry of interstellar ices and outer Solar System bodies, as they imply that the chemical products arising from the irradiation of amorphous ices (which may include prebiotic molecules relevant to biology) should be more abundant than those arising from similar irradiations of crystalline phases. In this present study, we have extended our work on this subject by performing comparative energetic electron irradiations of the amorphous and crystalline phases of the sulphur-bearing molecules H2S and SO2 at 20 K. We have found evidence for phase-dependent chemistry in both these species, with the radiation-induced exponential decay of amorphous H2S being more rapid than that of the crystalline phase, similar to the effect that has been previously observed for CH3OH. For SO2, two fluence regimes are apparent: a low-fluence regime in which the crystalline ice exhibits a rapid exponential decay while the amorphous ice possibly resists decay, and a high-fluence regime in which both phases undergo slow exponential-like decays. We have discussed our results in the contexts of interstellar and Solar System ice astrochemistry and the formation of sulphur allotropes and residues in these settings.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to find a sensitive method to highlight the remodeling of the brain's bioelectric activity in post-stroke repair. METHODS: Fifteen mild upper limb paretic stroke patients and age-matched healthy controls were included. Repeated trials of finger tapping around the 10th and 100th days after stroke onset were recorded with a 128-channel EEG. Power spectra and Inter Trial Coherence (ITC) calculations were synchronized to tappings. ITC was correlated with motor performance. RESULTS: ITC, in low frequency bands, designates the motor related bioelectric activity in channel space in both healthy subjects and patients. Ten days after stroke onset, delta-theta ITC was severely reduced compared to baseline, while three months later ITC reorganized partially over the ipsilesional central-parietal areas reflecting the improvement of motor networks. Decreased ITC in the central-parietal area remained significant compared to controls. Delta band ITC over the dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex correlates with the performance on Nine Hole Peg Test. At post-recovery, non-paretic hand tappings show significantly decreased delta-theta ITC over the supplementary motor area, which reflects network remodeling. CONCLUSIONS: Inter Trial Coherence is a useful measure of brain reorganization during stroke recovery. SIGNIFICANCE: Delta- theta ITC is a sensitive indicator of impaired motor execution.

The Ice Chamber for Astrophysics-Astrochemistry (ICA) is a new laboratory end station located at the Institute for Nuclear Research (Atomki) in Debrecen, Hungary. The ICA has been specifically designed for the study of the physico-chemical properties of astrophysical ice analogs and their chemical evolution when subjected to ionizing radiation and thermal processing. The ICA is an ultra-high-vacuum compatible chamber containing a series of IR-transparent substrates mounted on a copper holder connected to a closed-cycle cryostat capable of being cooled down to 20 K, itself mounted on a 360° rotation stage and a z-linear manipulator. Ices are deposited onto the substrates via background deposition of dosed gases. The ice structure and chemical composition are monitored by means of FTIR absorbance spectroscopy in transmission mode, although the use of reflectance mode is possible by using metallic substrates. Pre-prepared ices may be processed in a variety of ways. A 2 MV Tandetron accelerator is capable of delivering a wide variety of high-energy ions into the ICA, which simulates ice processing by cosmic rays, solar wind, or magnetospheric ions. The ICA is also equipped with an electron gun that may be used for electron impact radiolysis of ices. Thermal processing of both deposited and processed ices may be monitored by means of both FTIR spectroscopy and quadrupole mass spectrometry. In this paper, we provide a detailed description of the ICA setup as well as an overview of the preliminary results obtained and future plans.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic probably started in China in 2019 and is influencing the whole healthcare system worldwide. As several healthcare interventions are essential even during pandemics, it is necessary for professionals working in such fields to get up-to-date information about the virus and its aspects that can influence patient care and suggested actions. The current article is a literature review, in which the authors elaborated the recently available scientific articles with their relevancy for clinical interventions as primary factor. The processed articles emphasize that during interventions in the head and neck region, especially when using rotating instruments, it is of utmost importance for all personnel being present at the time of intervention to wear full protection, including disposable medical uniforms, glasses and special masks. These single-use items have to be changed after each intervention and the whole team has to be educated for this process in advance. In order to avoid cross-contamination and infection of personnel during intervention, it is essential to keep all work-safety and infection-control precautions extremely strictly. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are frequently contaminated with unwanted electrooculographic (EOG) artifacts. Blinks and eye movements generate large amplitude peaks that corrupt EEG measurements. Independent component analysis (ICA) has been used extensively in manual and automatic methods to remove artifacts. By decomposing the signals into neural and artifactual components and artifact components can be eliminated before signal reconstruction. Unfortunately, removing entire components may result in losing important neural information present in the component and eventually may distort the spectral characteristics of the reconstructed signals. An alternative approach is to correct artifacts within the independent components instead of rejecting the entire component, for which wavelet transform based decomposition methods have been used with good results. An improved, fully automatic wavelet-based component correction method is presented for EOG artifact removal that corrects EOG components selectively, i.e., within EOG activity regions only, leaving other parts of the component untouched. In addition, the method does not rely on reference EOG channels. The results show that the proposed method outperforms other component rejection and wavelet-based EOG removal methods in its accuracy both in the time and the spectral domain. The proposed new method represents an important step towards the development of accurate, reliable and automatic EOG artifact removal methods.

Background: Lower urinary tract infections (LUTIs) are amongst the most common community acquired infections with frequent antibiotic prescribing. Objectives: To assess empiric antibiotic choice in different types of lower urinary tract infections. We also aimed to identify determinants of fluoroquinolone prescribing, as well as to determine the rate of short antibiotic courses. The frequencies of executing laboratory tests and recommending analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs were also assessed. Methods: A prospective observational study was performed in 19 different Hungarian primary care practices. Participating general practitioners (GPs) filled out data sheets for each patient with a suspected urinary tract infection. Details of drug use were evaluated. Comparison of different LUTI groups were made by descriptive statistics and univariate analysis. Possible determinants of fluoroquinolone prescribing were assessed by logistic regression. Results: Data sheets of 372 patients were analyzed. The majority of patients (68.82%) had acute uncomplicated cystitis. While antibiotics were prescribed for almost every patient (uncomplicated cases: 92.58%, complicated cases: 94.83%), analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs were recommended at a rate of 7.81% in uncomplicated, and 13.79% in complicated cystitis cases. Ciprofloxacin was the most commonly prescribed antibacterial agent in both types of cystitis. Short-term antibiotic therapy was prescribed in one third of relevant cases. Logistic regression found a weak association between fluoroquinolone use and patient's age and presence of complicating factors. Conclusions: Many aspects of suboptimal cystitis management were identified (e.g. unnecessarily broad spectra agents, too long antibiotic courses). In this study, patient characteristics has weakly influenced fluoroquinolone prescribing. Based on these results there is considerable room for improvement in primary care antibiotic therapy of cystitis in Hungary.
