RESUMO

Background The American College of Radiology updated Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) version 1.0 to version 1.1 in May 2019, with the two key changes involving perifissural nodules (PFNs) and ground-glass nodules (GGNs) now designated as a negative screening result. This study examines the effects of these changes using National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) data. Purpose To determine the frequency of PFNs and GGNs reclassified from category 3 or 4A to the more benign category 2 in the updated Lung-RADS version 1.1, as compared with Lung-RADS version 1.0, using CT scans from the NLST. Materials and Methods In this secondary analysis of the NLST, the authors studied all noncalcified nodules (NCNs) found on the incident scan. Nodules were evaluated using criteria from both Lung-RADS version 1.0 and version 1.1, which were compared to determine changes in the number of nodules deemed benign. A McNemar test was used to assess statistical significance. Results A total of 2813 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 62 years ± 5; 1717 men) with 4408 NCNs were studied. Of the largest 1092 solid NCNs measuring at least 6 mm but less than 10 mm, 216 (19.8%) were deemed PFNs (category 2) using Lung-RADS version 1.1. Eleven of the 1092 solid NCNs (1.0%) were malignant, but none were PFNs. Of 161 GGNs, three (1.9%) were category 3 according to Lung-RADS version 1.0, of which two (66.7%) were down-classified to category 2 with version 1.1. One of the three down-categorized GGNs (version 1.1) proved to be malignant (false-negative finding). Statistically significant improvement for Lung-RADS version 1.1 was found for total nodules (P < .01) and PFNs (P < .01), but not GGNs (P = .48). Conclusion This secondary analysis of National Lung Screening Trial data shows that Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System version 1.1 decreased the number of false-positive results. This was related to the down-classification of perifissural nodules in the range of 6 up to 10 mm. The increase in allowable nodule size for ground-glass nodules in category 2 from 20 mm (version 1.0) to 30 mm (version 1.1) showed no benefit. © RSNA, 2021 See also the editorial by Mayo and Lam in this issue.

The production of printable graphene flakes is not easy to scale up when produced by ultrasonication and purified by centrifugation. In this work, natural graphite flakes were exfoliated by wet ball milling in water supported by the addition of sodium deoxycholate as a surfactant and the dispersion was formulated for inkjet printing. By subsequent dilution and filtration of the milling paste, more than 45 l of a stable dispersion of nano-graphite particles in one batch process was obtained. The dispersion was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and UV-vis spectroscopy to determine concentration, and experiments to measure long-term stability were conducted. The nano-graphite particles were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, revealing 300-400 nm sized particles. The dispersion was formulated into an inkjet ink and tested as interfacial hole transport layer between the anode and the photo-active bulk-heterojunction layer of an organic solar cell with inverted structure. The nano-graphite flakes are inkjet printable and conductive and therefore show potential as a low-cost alternative to polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate.

Chlamydia (C.) psittaci, the causative agent of ornithosis, is an obligate intracellular pathogen with a unique developmental cycle and a high potential for zoonotic transmission. Various mammalian hosts, such as cattle, horse, sheep and man that are in close contact with contaminated birds can get infected (referred to as psittacosis). Since little is known about long-term sequelae of chronic disease and the molecular mechanisms of chlamydial pathogenesis, a key step in understanding the in vivo situation is the identification of C. psittaci infection-associated proteins. For this, we investigated sera of infected calves. Using the immunoscreening approach In Vivo Induced Antigen Technology (IVIAT) including all relevant controls, we focused on C. psittaci proteins, which are induced in vivo during infection. Sera were pooled, extensively adsorbed against in vitro antigens to eliminate false positive results, and used to screen an inducible C. psittaci 02DC15 genomic expression library. Screening and control experiments revealed 19 immunogenic proteins, which are expressed during infection. They are involved in transport and oxidative stress response, heme and folate biosynthesis, DNA replication, recombination and repair, cell envelope, bacterial secretion systems and hypothetical proteins of so far unknown functions. Some of the proteins found may be considered as diagnostic markers or as candidates for the development of vaccines.

Although slugs and snails play important roles in terrestrial ecosystems and cause considerable damage on a variety of crop plants, knowledge about the mechanisms of plant immunity to molluscs is limited. We found slugs to be natural herbivores of Arabidopsis thaliana and therefore investigated possible resistance mechanisms of this species against several molluscan herbivores. Treating wounded leaves with the mucus residue ('slime trail') of the Spanish slug Arion lusitanicus increased wound-induced jasmonate levels, suggesting the presence of defence elicitors in the mucus. Plants deficient in jasmonate biosynthesis and signalling suffered more damage by molluscan herbivores in the laboratory and in the field, demonstrating that JA-mediated defences protect A. thaliana against slugs and snails. Furthermore, experiments using A. thaliana mutants with altered levels of specific glucosinolate classes revealed the importance of aliphatic glucosinolates in defending leaves and reproductive structures against molluscs. The presence in mollusc faeces of known and novel metabolites arising from glutathione conjugation with glucosinolate hydrolysis products suggests that molluscan herbivores actively detoxify glucosinolates. Higher levels of aliphatic glucosinolates were found in plants during the night compared to the day, which correlated well with the nocturnal activity rhythms of slugs and snails. Our data highlight the function of well-known antiherbivore defence pathways in resistance against slugs and snails and suggest an important role for the diurnal regulation of defence metabolites against nocturnal molluscan herbivores.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of malignancy of nonperifissural juxtapleural nodules (JPNs) measuring 6 to < 10 mm in a subset of low-dose chest computed tomographies from the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial and the rate of down-classification of such nodules in Lung-Reporting and Data System (RADS) 2.0 compared with Lung-RADS 1.1. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A secondary analysis of a subset of the National Lung Screening Trial was performed. An exemption was granted by the Institutional Review Board. The dominant noncalcified nodule measuring 6 to <10 mm was identified on all available prevalence computed tomographies. Nodules were categorized as pleural or nonpleural. Benign or malignant morphology was recorded. Initial and updated categories based on Lung-RADS 1.1 and Lung-RADS 2.0 were assigned, respectively. The impact of the down-classification of JPN was assessed. Both classification schemes were compared using the McNemar test (P < 0.01). RESULTS: A total of 2813 patients (62 ± 5 y, 1717 men) with 4408 noncalcified nodules were studied. One thousand seventy-three dominant nodules measuring 6 to <10 mm were identified. Three hundred forty-eight (32.4%) were JPN. The updated scheme allowed down-classification of 310 JPN from categories 3 (n = 198) and 4A (n = 112) to category 2. We, therefore, estimate a 4.8% rate of down-classification to category 2 in the entire National Lung Screening Trial screening group. Two/348 (0.57%) JPN were malignant, both nonbenign in morphology. The false-positive rate decreased in the updated classification (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the low malignant potential of benign morphology JPN measuring 6 mm to <10 mm. The Lung-RADS 2.0 approach to JPN is estimated to reduce short-term follow-ups and false-positive results.

This work demonstrates the green production of a graphene ink for inkjet printing and its use as a hole transport layer (HTL) in an organic solar cell. Graphene as an HTL improves the selective hole extraction at the anode and prevents charge recombination at the electronic interface and metal diffusion into the photoactive layer. Graphite was exfoliated in water, concentrated by iterative centrifugation, and characterized by Raman. The concentrated graphene ink was incorporated into inverted organic solar cells by inkjet printing on the active polymer in an ambient atmosphere. Argon plasma was used to enhance wetting of the polymer with the graphene ink during printing. The argon plasma treatment of the active polymer P3HT:PCBM was investigated by XPS, AFM and contact angle measurements. Efficiency and lifetime studies undertaken show that the device with graphene as HTL is fully functional and has good potential for an inkjet printable and flexible alternative to PEDOT:PSS.

Different studies confirm that children with developmental coordination disorders (DCD) feature additionally cognitive deficits in areas of visual perception, memory and processing speed. The aim of the present study was to explore, whether or not children suffering from DCD have specific performance profiles in the WISC-IV. For this purpose, the WISC-IV results of 40 children with DCD (diagnosed using the Movement ABC-2), mean age 7,60, were compared with a control group matched according to age und gender. The children in the clinical group offered a homogenous performance profile, scoring below average in each of the four indices (verbal comprehension, perception reasoning, working memory and processing speed) and general IQ. Therefore, in clinical practice the WISC-IV is an appropriate instrument to detect cognitive deficits that can appear in conjunction with DCD.

Slugs and snails specifically secrete mucus to aid their locomotion. This mucus is the contact material between molluscan herbivores and plants. We have recently shown that the locomotion mucus of the slug Deroceras reticulatum contains salicylic acid (SA).(1) When applied to wounded leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana this mucus induces the activity of the SA-responsive pathogenesis related 1 (PR1) promotor1. Here we analyzed PR1 promotor activity in response to treatments with locomotion mucus of eight slugs and snails. Although none of the mucus contained SA, their application still elicited PR1 promotor activity. These data provide further insights into the complex interactions between molluscan herbivores and plants.

Slugs and snails are important herbivores in many ecosystems. They differ from other herbivores by their characteristic mucus trail. As the mucus is secreted at the interface between the plants and the herbivores, its chemical composition may play an essential role in plant responses to slug and snail attack. Based on our current knowledge about host-manipulation strategies employed by pathogens and insects, we hypothesized that mollusks may excrete phytohormone-like substances into their mucus. We therefore screened locomotion mucus from thirteen molluscan herbivores for the presence of the plant defense hormones jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA). We found that the locomotion mucus of one slug, Deroceras reticulatum, contained significant amounts of SA, a plant hormone that is known to induce resistance to pathogens and to suppress plant immunity against herbivores. None of the other slugs and snails contained SA or any other hormone in their locomotion mucus. When the mucus of D. reticulatum was applied to wounded leaves of A. thaliana, the promotor of the SA-responsive gene pathogenesis related 1 (PR1) was activated, demonstrating the potential of the mucus to regulate plant defenses. We discuss the potential ecological, agricultural and medical implications of this finding.

The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (M-ABC-2) is one of the most commonly used tests for the diagnosis of specific developmental disorders of motor function (F82). The M-ABC-2 comprises eight subtests per age band (AB) that are assigned to three dimensions: manual dexterity, aiming and catching, and balance. However, while previous exploratory findings suggested the correctness of the assumption of factorial validity, there is no empirical evidence that the M-ABC-2 subtests allow for a valid reproduction of the postulated factorial structure. The purpose of this study was to empirically confirm the factorial validity of the M-ABC-2. The German normative sample of AB2 (7-10 years; N=323) was used as the study sample for the empirical analyses. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to verify the factorial validity of the M-ABC-2 (AB2). The incremental fit indices (χ2=28.675; df=17; Bollen-Stine p value=0.318; RMSEA=0.046 [0.011-0.075]; SRMR=0.038; CFI=0.960) provided evidence for the factorial validity of the M-ABC-2 (AB2). However, because of a lack of empirical verification for convergent and discriminant validity, there is still no evidence that F82 can be diagnosed using M-ABC-2 (AB2).

Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) as well as overweight and obesity are of increasing importance in the study of human development. Data on the relation between DCD and obesity in adolescence are of particular interest because both phenomena are unlikely to disappear with age. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of obesity on severe DCD in adolescence. A total of 99 obese adolescents aged between 11 and 16 years and 99 normal-weight controls matched for age and gender were included in this cross-sectional study. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 (age band 3) was used to determine subjects' stage of motor development. Results made clear that (i) obese show a higher severe DCD-risk in comparison to normal-weight adolescents (p<.01) which is (ii) most pronounced in balance (p<.01), and (iii) thereby rather appears in boys (p≤.10). Thus, our results at least do not exclude the possibility that obesity might have a detrimental effect on the etiopathology of DCD beyond childhood. Therefore, primary obesity prevention measures may additionally contribute to the prevention of a possible consolidation of severe DCD.
