RESUMO

Driver distraction and inattention have been found to be major contributors to a large number of serious road crashes. It is evident that distraction reduces to a great extent driver perception levels as well as their decision making capability and the ability of drivers to control the vehicle. An effective way to mitigate the effects of distraction on crash probability, would be through monitoring the mental state of drivers or their driving behaviour and alerting them when they are in a distracted state. Towards that end, in recent years, several inexpensive and effective detection systems have been developed in order to cope with driver inattention. This study endeavours to critically review and assess the state-of-the-art systems and platforms measuring driver distraction or inattention. A thorough literature review was carried out in order to compare and contrast technologies that can be used to detect, monitor or measure driver's distraction or inattention. The systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The results indicated that in most of the identified studies, driver distraction was measured with respect to its impact to driver behaviour. Real-time eye tracking systems, cardiac sensors on steering wheels, smartphone applications and cameras were found to be the most frequent devices to monitor and detect driver distraction. On the other hand, less frequent and effective approaches included electrodes, hand magnetic rings and glasses.

RESUMO

The twin arginine translocation (Tat) machinery which is capable of transporting folded proteins across lipid bilayers operates in the thylakoid membrane of plant chloroplasts as well as in the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. It is composed of three integral membrane proteins (TatA, TatB, and TatC) which form heteromeric complexes of high molecular weight that accomplish binding and transport of substrates carrying Tat pathway-specific signal peptides. Western analyses using affinity purified antibodies showed in both, juvenile and adult tissue from Arabidopsis thaliana, an approximately equimolar ratio of the TatB and TatC components, whereas TatA was detectable only in minor amounts. Upon Blue Native-PAGE, TatB and TatC were found in four heteromeric TatB/C complexes possessing molecular weights of approximately 310, 370, 560 and 620 kDa, respectively, while TatA was detected only in a molecular weight range below 200 kDa. The implications of these findings on the currently existing models explaining the mechanism of Tat transport are discussed.

RESUMO

Economic evaluations of road safety measures are only rarely published in the scholarly literature. We collected and (re-)analyzed evidence in order to conduct cost-benefit analyses (CBAs) for 29 road safety measures. The information on crash costs was based on data from a survey in European countries. We applied a systematic procedure including corrections for inflation and Purchasing Power Parity in order to express all the monetary information in the same units (EUR, 2015). Cost-benefit analyses were done for measures with favorable estimated effects on road safety and for which relevant information on costs could be found. Results were assessed in terms of benefit-to-cost ratios and net present value. In order to account for some uncertainties, we carried out sensitivity analyses based on varying assumptions for costs of measures and measure effectiveness. Moreover we defined some combinations used as best case and worst case scenarios. In the best estimate scenario, 25 measures turn out to be cost-effective. 4 measures (road lighting, automatic barriers installation, area wide traffic calming and mandatory eyesight tests) are not cost-effective according to this scenario. In total, 14 measures remain cost-effective throughout all scenarios, whereas 10 other measures switch from cost-effective in the best case scenario to not cost-effective in the worst case scenario. For three measures insufficient information is available to calculate all scenarios. Two measures (automatic barriers installation and area wide traffic calming) even in the best case do not become cost-effective. Inherent uncertainties tend to be present in the underlying data on costs of measures, effects and target groups. Results of CBAs are not necessarily generally valid or directly transferable to other settings.

RESUMO

The European Road Safety Decision Support System (roadsafety-dss.eu) is an innovative system providing the available evidence on a broad range of road risks and possible countermeasures. This paper describes the scientific basis of the DSS. The structure underlying the DSS consists of (1) a taxonomy identifying risk factors and measures and linking them to each other, (2) a repository of studies, and (3) synopses summarizing the effects estimated in the literature for each risk factor and measure, and (4) an economic efficiency evaluation instrument (E3-calculator). The DSS is implemented in a modern web-based tool with a highly ergonomic interface, allowing users to get a quick overview or go deeper into the results of single studies according to their own needs.

RESUMO

Researchers have theoretically proposed that humans decode other individuals' emotions or elementary cognitive appraisals from particular sets of facial action units (AUs). However, only a few empirical studies have systematically tested the relationships between the decoding of emotions/appraisals and sets of AUs, and the results are mixed. Furthermore, the previous studies relied on facial expressions of actors and no study used spontaneous and dynamic facial expressions in naturalistic settings. We investigated this issue using video recordings of facial expressions filmed unobtrusively in a real-life emotional situation, specifically loss of luggage at an airport. The AUs observed in the videos were annotated using the Facial Action Coding System. Male participants (n = 98) were asked to decode emotions (e.g., anger) and appraisals (e.g., suddenness) from facial expressions. We explored the relationships between the emotion/appraisal decoding and AUs using stepwise multiple regression analyses. The results revealed that all the rated emotions and appraisals were associated with sets of AUs. The profiles of regression equations showed AUs both consistent and inconsistent with those in theoretical proposals. The results suggest that (1) the decoding of emotions and appraisals in facial expressions is implemented by the perception of set of AUs, and (2) the profiles of such AU sets could be different from previous theories.

RESUMO

Enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins from rice, soy, pea and wheat, with both chymotrypsin and thermolysin, resulted in hydrolysates, which are efficient inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). IC50 values of the hydrolysates were between 27 and 39mg/l, which is comparable to enzymatically hydrolysed whey protein. A significant increase of the ACE-inhibiting effect was observed following butanol extraction due to accumulation of hydrophobic peptides (IC50 between 12 and 21mg/l). Based on the identification and quantification of individual tryptophan-, tyrosine- and phenylalanine-containing dipeptides, 50-80% of the total ACE-inhibiting potential of butanol extracts from plant protein hydrolysates could be explained. Compared to hydrolysates from whey protein, where the inhibitory effect can almost exclusively be attributed to Ile-Trp, the ACE inhibition by plant protein hydrolysates is caused by a variety of peptides, in particular tyrosine-containing peptides. Hydrolysates of plant proteins are promising ingredients for the development of functional foods.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of intra- and postoperative complications and prognosis of cervical sialoceles in the dog when using the lateral surgical approach for extirpation of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records of 16 dogs with 19 sialoceles were evaluated retrospectively. Long-term follow-up was evaluated by telephone questionnaire to the owners or the referring veterinarian. The surgical technique is depicted in detail. RESULTS: Dogs were of various breeds. Mean age was 5.6 years (1-13 years) and mean weight was 19.1 kg (6.5-33.6 kg). Eleven dogs were male (two castrated) and five were female (two castrated). The main complaint was a cervical swelling, which was present for one year or longer in three animals, for more than one month in eight animals, and between one day and one month in five animals. At initial presentation, 12 patients were pretreated. Three patients showed a bilateral sialocele initially or later. In all cases, the diagnosis of a sialocele was made correctly by ultrasonography. Intraoperatively, no complications occurred. Postoperatively, one patient developed a bleeding and two patients a seroma. In one patient a ranula was diagnosed 14 weeks postoperatively. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The lateral approach is well suited for surgical treatment of isolated cervical sialoceles, has a low complication rate and a very good prognosis. Conservative treatment using aspiration or drainage of the cyst's content is not indicated. Sialoceles can occur bilaterally, either initially or later.

RESUMO

So far, limited research has been carried out to better understand the interplay between the emotions, the use of emotion regulation strategies, and the well-being of professional caregivers of People with Dementia (PwD). This pilot study (N = 43 professional caregivers) aimed to (1) describe the type and frequency of emotions experienced at work; (2) analyze the associations between experienced emotions, emotion regulation strategies, and well-being; and (3) test whether the use of specific emotion regulation strategies moderates the relationship between experienced emotions and emotional exhaustion. In the challenging context of professionally caring for PwD, results suggest that (1) caregivers experience positive emotions more frequently than negative emotions; (2) caregivers using relatively inappropriate regulation strategies are more likely to experience negative emotions, less likely to experience positive emotions, and have poorer physical and mental health; and (3) expressive suppression significantly moderates the relationship between positive experienced emotions and emotional exhaustion.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical, radiographic, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in 16 dogs diagnosed with gastrocnemius musculotendinopathy. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of medical records, radiographs, and MRI results, as well as follow-up completed by telephone questionnaire. RESULTS: Most dogs had chronic hindlimb lameness with no history of trauma or athletic activities. Clinical examination revealed signs of pain on palpation without stifle joint instability. Seven dogs had radiographic signs of osteophyte formation on the lateral fabella. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed T2 hyperintensity and uptake of contrast agent in the region of the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle. Changes were found in the lateral and medial heads of the gastrocnemius. Conservative treatment resulted in return to full function in 11 dogs. Two dogs showed partial restoration of normal function, one dog showed no improvement. Two dogs were lost to follow-up. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Gastrocnemius musculotendinopathy is a potential cause of chronic hindlimb lameness in medium to large breed dogs. A history of athletic activity must not necessarily be present. Magnetic resonance imaging shows signal changes and uptake of contrast agent in the region of the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle. A combination of T1 pre- and post-contrast administration and T2 weighted sequences completed by a fat-suppressed sequence in the sagittal plane are well-suited for diagnosis. Conservative treatment generally results in return to normal function.

RESUMO

Somatic angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) contains two active sites, the C- and N-domain, from which the C-domain is supposed to play a major role in blood pressure regulation and is therefore a promising pharmacological target to reduce blood pressure without side-effects. We report for the first time that tryptophan-containing dipeptides such as Ile-Trp or Val-Trp, which were recently found in food protein hydrolysates, are selective and competitive inhibitors for the C-domain with a selectivity factor of 40 and 70, respectively. Structure-activity studies showed that an N-terminal aliphatic amino acid and a tryptophan moiety in the P2' position are favourable structures for C-domain inhibition in dipeptides. In contrast, the lactotripeptides Ile-Pro-Pro and Val-Pro-Pro, which were widely used as ingredients for hypotensive food, showed a slight selectivity for the N-domain. Hence, tryptophan containing dipeptides are interesting ingredients for functional foods as a natural prevention for hypertension with reduced side effects due to its selective inhibition of the C-domain.

RESUMO

The mechanisms through which people perceive different types of smiles and judge their authenticity remain unclear. Here, 19 different types of smiles were created based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), using highly controlled, dynamic avatar faces. Participants observed short videos of smiles while their facial mimicry was measured with electromyography (EMG) over four facial muscles. Smile authenticity was judged after each trial. Avatar attractiveness was judged once in response to each avatar's neutral face. Results suggest that, in contrast to most earlier work using static pictures as stimuli, participants relied less on the Duchenne marker (the presence of crow's feet wrinkles around the eyes) in their judgments of authenticity. Furthermore, mimicry of smiles occurred in the Zygomaticus Major, Orbicularis Oculi, and Corrugator muscles. Consistent with theories of embodied cognition, activity in these muscles predicted authenticity judgments, suggesting that facial mimicry influences the perception of smiles. However, no significant mediation effect of facial mimicry was found. Avatar attractiveness did not predict authenticity judgments or mimicry patterns.
