We report a search for time variations of the solar ^{8}B neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53±0.35)%, and a perihelion shift of (-1.5±13.5) days.

We report a search for cosmic-ray boosted dark matter with protons using the 0.37 megaton×years data collected at Super-Kamiokande experiment during the 1996-2018 period (SKI-IV phase). We searched for an excess of proton recoils above the atmospheric neutrino background from the vicinity of the Galactic Center. No such excess is observed, and limits are calculated for two reference models of dark matter with either a constant interaction cross section or through a scalar mediator. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter with hadrons using directional information. The results present the most stringent limits on cosmic-ray boosted dark matter and exclude the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10^{-33}cm^{2} and 10^{-27}cm^{2} for dark matter mass from 1 MeV/c^{2} to 300 MeV/c^{2}.

A search for boosted dark matter using 161.9 kt yr of Super-Kamiokande IV data is presented. We search for an excess of elastically scattered electrons above the atmospheric neutrino background, with a visible energy between 100 MeV and 1 TeV, pointing back to the Galactic center or the Sun. No such excess is observed. Limits on boosted dark matter event rates in multiple angular cones around the Galactic center and Sun are calculated. Limits are also calculated for a baseline model of boosted dark matter produced from cold dark matter annihilation or decay. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter from the Galactic center or the Sun interacting in a terrestrial detector.

Strain, magnetization, dielectric relaxation, and unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction measurements were performed to study the magnetic and structural properties of spinel Co_{1-x}V_{2+x}O_{4}. The strain measurement indicates that, upon cooling, ΔL/L in the order of â¼10^{-4} starts increasing below T_{C}, becomes maximum at T_{max}, and then decreases and changes its sign at T^{*}. Neutron measurements indicate that a collinear ferrimagnetic order develops below T_{C} and upon further cooling noncollinear ferrimagnetic ordering occurs below T_{max}. At low temperatures, the dielectric constant exhibits a frequency dependence, indicating slow dynamics. These results indicate the existence of an orbital glassy state at low temperatures in this nearly metallic frustrated magnet.

Search results for nucleon decays pâe^{+}X, pâµ^{+}X, nâνγ (where X is an invisible, massless particle) as well as dinucleon decays npâe^{+}ν, npâµ^{+}ν, and npâτ^{+}ν in the Super-Kamiokande experiment are presented. Using single-ring data from an exposure of 273.4 kton·yr, a search for these decays yields a result consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τ_{pâe^{+}X}>7.9×10^{32} yr, τ_{pâµ^{+}X}>4.1×10^{32} yr, τ_{nâνγ}>5.5×10^{32} yr, τ_{npâe^{+}ν}>2.6×10^{32} yr, τ_{npâµ^{+}ν}>2.2×10^{32} yr, and τ_{npâτ^{+}ν}>2.9×10^{31} yr at a 90% confidence level are obtained. Some of these searches are novel.

Super-Kamiokande (SK) can search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by detecting neutrinos produced from WIMP annihilations occurring inside the Sun. In this analysis, we include neutrino events with interaction vertices in the detector in addition to upward-going muons produced in the surrounding rock. Compared to the previous result, which used the upward-going muons only, the signal acceptances for light (few-GeV/c^{2}-200-GeV/c^{2}) WIMPs are significantly increased. We fit 3903 days of SK data to search for the contribution of neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun. We found no significant excess over expected atmospheric-neutrino background and the result is interpreted in terms of upper limits on WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections under different assumptions about the annihilation channel. We set the current best limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section for WIMP masses below 200 GeV/c^{2} (at 10 GeV/c^{2}, 1.49×10^{-39} cm^{2} for χχâbb[over ¯] and 1.31×10^{-40} cm^{2} for χχâτ^{+}τ^{-} annihilation channels), also ruling out some fraction of WIMP candidates with spin-independent coupling in the few-GeV/c^{2} mass range.

The trilepton nucleon decay modes pâe+νν and pâµ+νν violate |Δ(B-L)| by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kt yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τpâe+νν>1.7×10(32) years and τpâµ+νν>2.2×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.

We present the results of searches for nucleon decay via nâν[over ¯]π0 and pâν[over ¯]π+ using data from a combined 172.8 kt·yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I,-II, and-III. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τnâν[over ¯]π0>1.1×10(33) years and τpâν[over ¯]π+>3.9×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level.

A search for the dinucleon decay pp â K+ K+ has been performed using 91.6 kton·yr data from Super-Kamiokande-I. This decay provides a sensitive probe of the R-parity-violating parameter λ112''. A boosted decision tree analysis found no signal candidates in the data. The expected background was 0.28±0.19 atmospheric neutrino induced events and the estimated signal detection efficiency was 12.6%±3.2%. A lower limit of 1.7×10(32) years has been placed on the partial lifetime of the decay O16 â C14K+ K+ at 90% C.L. A corresponding upper limit of 7.8×10(-9) has been placed on the parameter λ112''.

We report an indication that the elastic scattering rate of solar B8 neutrinos with electrons in the Super-Kamiokande detector is larger when the neutrinos pass through Earth during nighttime. We determine the day-night asymmetry, defined as the difference of the average day rate and average night rate divided by the average of those two rates, to be [-3.2 ± 1.1(stat) ± 0.5(syst)]%, which deviates from zero by 2.7 σ. Since the elastic scattering process is mostly sensitive to electron-flavored solar neutrinos, a nonzero day-night asymmetry implies that the flavor oscillations of solar neutrinos are affected by the presence of matter within the neutrinos' flight path. Super-Kamiokande's day-night asymmetry is consistent with neutrino oscillations for 4 × 10(-5) eV(2) ≤ Δm 2(21) ≤ 7 × 10(-5) eV(2) and large mixing values of θ12, at the 68% C.L.

Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data were fit with an unbinned maximum likelihood method to search for the appearance of tau leptons resulting from the interactions of oscillation-generated tau neutrinos in the detector. Relative to the expectation of unity, the tau normalization is found to be 1.42 ± 0.35(stat)(-0.12)(+0.14)(syst) excluding the no-tau-appearance hypothesis, for which the normalization would be zero, at the 3.8σ level. We estimate that 180.1 ± 44.3(stat)(-15.2)(+17.8) (syst) tau leptons were produced in the 22.5 kton fiducial volume of the detector by tau neutrinos during the 2806 day running period. In future analyses, this large sample of selected tau events will allow the study of charged current tau neutrino interaction physics with oscillation produced tau neutrinos.

The Kamioka Gravitational wave detector (KAGRA) cryogenic gravitational-wave observatory has commenced joint observations with the worldwide gravitational wave detector network. Precise calibration of the detector response is essential for accurately estimating parameters of gravitational wave sources. A photon calibrator is a crucial calibration tool used in laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory, Virgo, and KAGRA, and it was utilized in joint observation 3 with GEO600 in Germany in April 2020. In this paper, KAGRA implemented three key enhancements: a high-power laser, a power stabilization system, and remote beam position control. KAGRA employs a 20 W laser divided into two beams that are injected onto the mirror surface. By utilizing a high-power laser, the response of the detector at kHz frequencies can be calibrated. To independently control the power of each laser beam, an optical follower servo was installed for power stabilization. The optical path of the photon calibrator's beam positions was controlled using pico-motors, allowing for the characterization of the detector's rotation response. Additionally, a telephoto camera and quadrant photodetectors were installed to monitor beam positions, and beam position control was implemented to optimize the mirror response. In this paper, we discuss the statistical errors associated with the measurement of relative power noise. We also address systematic errors related to the power calibration model of the photon calibrator and the simulation of elastic deformation effects using finite element analysis. Ultimately, we have successfully reduced the total systematic error from the photon calibrator to 2.0%.

The local structure of the filled tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) niobate Ba3Nb5-xTixO15 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.7, 1.0), showing a metal-insulator transition with Ti substitution, has been studied by Nb K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements as a function of temperature. The Ti substitution has been found to have a substantial effect on the local structure, that remains largely temperature independent in the studied temperature range of 80-400 K. The Nb-O bonds distribution shows an increased octahedral distortion induced by Ti substitution, while Nb-Ba distances are marginally affected. The Nb-O bonds are stiffer in the Ti substituted samples, which is revealed by the temperature dependent mean square relative displacements (MSRDs). Furthermore, there is an overall increase in the configurational disorder while the system with Nb 4d electrons turns insulating. The results underline a clear relationship between the local structure and the electronic transport properties suggesting that the metal-insulator transition and possible thermoelectric properties of TTB structured niobates can be tuned by disorder.

We present a search for differences in the oscillations of antineutrinos and neutrinos in the Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, and -III atmospheric neutrino sample. Under a two-flavor disappearance model with separate mixing parameters between neutrinos and antineutrinos, we find no evidence for a difference in oscillation parameters. Best-fit antineutrino mixing is found to be at (Δm2,sin2 2θ)=(2.0×10(-3) eV2, 1.0) and is consistent with the overall Super-K measurement.

PURPOSE: We analyzed retinoblastoma protein (pRB) and proliferating-cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression in primary tumors and recurrent lesions of well-differentiated papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) to clarify the relationship between their expression and recurrent disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 93 patients with PTC. No recurrent disease had developed in 60 patients within 10 years after surgery (group N). Thirty patients in whom recurrent disease had developed after surgery were enrolled in group R. Levels of pRB and PCNA expression were quantified using the CAS 200 system (Cell Analysis Systems, Elmhurst, IL) following immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Mean pRB expression level in the primary tumors in group R was significantly lower than that in group N (P < .0001). pRB expression in the tumors with a diameter up to 20 mm was significantly lower than that in tumors larger than 20 mm in group R (P < .01). There were no significant differences in the levels of expression of PCNA in the primary tumors between group N and group R. Univariate analysis demonstrated that the disease-free survival was significantly correlated with pN category, pRB, and PCNA expression level. The subgroup with high-level expression of pRB (> 25%) showed significantly long disease-free survival (P < .001). Furthermore, the subgroup with low-level expression of PCNA (< 35%) showed significantly longer disease-free survival (P < .05). Multivariate analysis showed pRB expression and pN category to be independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival in PTC. CONCLUSION: pRB expression level can be used as a reliable predictor for recurrence of PTC.

A protein-capture fluorescence enzyme immunoassay (FEIA) was developed using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against recombinant hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein. Four hybridoma cell lines (5E3, 5F11, 515S, 1080S) were established and characterized. These monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) each had IgG1 and OgG2 isotypes, and recognized major B cell epitopes within the immunodominant nucleoprotein amino terminal subregion. Using mAb 5F11 as the first antibody to the solid phase and beta-D-galactosidase-conjugated mAb 5E3 as the second antibody to the protein, we established a specific HCV core protein capturing FEIA capable of detecting as little as 20 pg/ml of recombinant HCV core protein. HCV core protein in serum was detectable after treatment with 4.0% polyethyleneglycol, 0.5 NaOH, and 5% Triton X-100. The results of a peptide inhibition assay indicated that this FEIA is specific for HCV RNA positive sera. The quantity of HCV core protein detected in serum was significantly correlated to the level of HCV RNA. The detection limit for HCV core proteins was an HCV RNA per titer of approximately 10(4)/ml. Using this FEIA system, the detection ratio of HCV core protein in patients with chronic HCV infection was 92.3% (70/76).

The s.c. administration of [Met5]-enkephalin to 10-day-old rats pretreated with the mixture of 3 peptidase inhibitors, amastatin, captopril and phosphoramidon, produced the inhibition of tail-flick response and loss of righting reflex. When infant rats were pretreated with the mixture of any combination of two peptidase inhibitors, however, the change in both the response and the reflex were not produced at all by enkephalin injection, indicating that 3 kinds of enzymes, amastatin-sensitive aminopeptidase(s), captopril-sensitive peptidyl dipeptidase A and phosphoramidon-sensitive endopeptidase 24.11, played an important role in the inactivation of enkephalin after its systemic administration. Additionally, the fact that the two enkephalin-induced effects were more effectively antagonized by naloxone, a relatively selective mu-opioid antagonist, than by naltrindole, a specific delta-antagonist, or by nor-binaltorphimine, a specific kappa-antagonist, showed that these two effects were produced by the interaction of enkephalin with mu receptors. Moreover the involvement of mu receptors in the production of these two effects was shown by the fact that the s.c. administration of [D-Ala2,N-Me-Phe4,Gly5-ol]-enkephalin, a selective mu agonist, also produced these two effects which were more effectively antagonized by naloxone than by naltrindole or nor-binaltorphimine. Since the magnitude of the two effects induced by enkephalins in 15-day-old rats was significantly lower than that in 10-day-old rats, and the two enkephalin-induced effects were not produced at all in 20-day-old rats, a maturation-induced decrease in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier against opioid peptides was indicated.

Annexin V is a calcium binding protein which is widely present in various cells and tissues. Using annexin V which we isolated and purified from human cardiac muscle, we prepared an anti-human cardiac annexin V monoclonal antibody. Identification of annexin V was made by means of partial amino acid sequences. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using this monoclonal antibody and anti-canine cardiac annexin V polyclonal antibody. With this ELISA, plasma annexin V concentration was measured in 196 normal healthy individuals, 23 acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients who were hospitalized within 6 h after the onset of chest pain, and 130 patients with other diseases, including lung, liver and kidney disease. The plasma annexin V concentration in normal healthy individuals was 1.7 +/- 0.6 ng/ml (mean +/- S.D.), while that in AMI patients was elevated to 13.2 +/- 6.8 ng/ml (P < 0.0001) at the time of initial blood drawing, 3.2 +/- 1.5 h after onset of pain, and these values were higher than normal in 21 out of 23 cases (91.3%) of AMI. In all cases excepting 3, annexin V concentration immediately decreased after the onset of pain. The annexin V concentration in patients with old myocardial infarction, chest pain syndrome, valvular heart disease, lung disease and kidney disease was 1.8 +/- 0.8, 2.0 +/- 0.7, 1.7 +/- 1.1, 2.3 +/- 1.4 and 2.1 +/- 1.2 ng/ml, respectively, being within normal limits. The values in liver disease patients and trauma patients were 3.7 +/- 2.7 (P < 0.05) and 3.3 +/- 2.4 (P < 0.05) ng/ml, respectively, being slightly higher than that in normal healthy individuals.

We assessed the clinical utility of circulating angiogenic factors as a predictor for tumor angiogenesis in primary lung cancer. Circulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and intratumoral VEGF were assessed by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). There was a significant increase in the mean value of both plasma and serum VEGF concentration in primary lung cancer patients (n=97) compared to those of healthy controls (n=59). There was a significant correlation between plasma VEGF levels and microvessel density (MVD), and also between plasma VEGF and intratumoral VEGF levels. Plasma VEGF in patients with lung cancer appears to be a useful indicator of tumor angiogenesis.
