RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the postpartum period. Depression can decrease self-efficacy in breastfeeding by reducing the mother's self-confidence. Considering the conflicting results regarding the relationship between postpartum depression and breastfeeding self-efficacy, this systematic review was conducted to investigate the relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum depression. METHOD: In this systematic review, published articles in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched using English keywords "Self-efficacy, breastfeeding, breastfeeding Self-efficacy, depression, postpartum depression" without publication date limit. Data analysis was done with employing STATA14 software. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 index which was 0%. Therefore, the fixed effects method was used to combine the data and perform meta-analysis. RESULT: The results of the meta-analysis showed that based on the fixed effect method, depression was associated with decreased breastfeeding self-efficacy on the first day (SMD = 0.62, 95%CI: -0.830, -0.41, p = 0.0001) and on the third day (SMD = 0.84, 95% CI: -0.55,1.14, p = 0.0001). The Begg and Manzumdar test revealed no publication bias, with p = 0.317. CONCLUSION: Postpartum depression may be associated with a decrease in the mother's breastfeeding self-efficacy and placing mother in a condition to pay low attention to her maternal role. Therefore, healthcare providers should provide adequate support according to the needs of mothers and develop diagnostic and treatment protocols to improve the level of maternal health.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to assess the effects of Viola odorata syrup on the sleep quality of postmenopausal women. METHODS: This triple-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted on menopausal women presenting to the healthcare centers in Mashhad, Iran, in 2019. The participants were selected using simple random sampling. Participants received 5 ml syrup V. odorata or placebo twice a day for 1 month. Data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. RESULTS: The 118 eligible women enrolled in the study were divided into two groups of V. odorata syrup and placebo (n = 59 each). The analysis was conducted on only 84 menopausal women (42 in each group) due to exclusions. Exclusions consisted of 12 participants who withdrew from the study due to unwillingness to cooperate, 8 who had irregular consumption of the therapeutic syrup, 6 with inaccurate completion of the questionnaire, and 8 due to lack of accessibility. The two study groups were homogenous in terms of demographic characteristics. Before the intervention, no significant difference was observed in the mean PSQI score between the two groups (9.2 ± 2.9 vs. 8.4 ± 2.5) (P = 0.18). However, a significant difference was seen in the mean PSQI score between the two groups (4.9 ± 1.9 vs. 8.1 ± 2.1, P < 0.001) after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that V. odorata syrup may be a useful therapeutic agent to improve the sleep quality of menopausal women. REGISTRATION CODE: IRCT20180514039660N1.

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: Preclinical pharmacology. OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to evaluate the combined effect of Methylprednisolone (MP) and growth factor-rich serum (GFRS) on structural and functional recovery in rats following spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING: Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to five groups: sham group (laminectomy); SCI group (the spinal cord clip compression model); SCI-MP group (30 mg/kg MP was administrated intraperitoneally (IP) immediately after SCI); SCI-GFRS group (GFRS (200 µl, IP) was administrated for six consecutive days); and SCI-MP + GFRS group (the rats received MP (30 mg/kg, IP) immediately after SCI, and GFRS (200 µl, IP) for six consecutive days). Motor function was assessed weekly using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) scale. After 4 weeks, we conducted the rotarod test, then removed and prepared the spinal cords (including the epicenter of injury) for stereological and histological estimation, and biochemical assays. RESULTS: The results showed that MP and GFRS combining treatment enhanced functional recovery, which was associated with a decrement in lesion volume, increased spared white and gray matter volume, reduced neuronal loss, as well as decreased necrosis and hemorrhage after SCI. Moreover, administration of MP and GFRS inhibited lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde (MDA) content), and increased antioxidant enzymes including glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) after rat SCI. CONCLUSIONS: We suggests that the combination treatment of MP and GFRS may ameliorate the structure and functional changes following SCI by reducing oxidative stress, and increasing the level of antioxidants enzymes.

RESUMO

PURPOS: The location of infraorbital foramen (IOF) and the prevalence of accessory IOF vary among different populations. It may lead to infraorbital nerve (ION) blockage during surgery. This study aimed to assess the IOF location and AIOF frequency in Iranian people. METHOD: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 500 paranasal sinus computed tomography scans of adults were examined using the INFINITT PACS system. RESULT: The distance from IOF to infraorbital margin (IOM), mid-pupillary line (MPL), midsagittal line (MSL), canine eminence (CE), and skin thickness (ST) was 8.97 ± 1.79, 5.73 ± 1.84, 24.86 ± 2.23, 20.39 ± 3.47, and 10.90 ± 2.59 mm, respectively. The vertical and transverse diameters of the foramen were 3.03 ± 0.65 and 3.71 ± 0.76 mm, respectively. In addition, the shape of 63.5% of the foramina was oval. The prevalence of AIOF was 9%, and its most common location was superomedial to IOF. CONCLUSION: We believe that in this study, landmarks like IOM, MPL, MSL, CE and ST could help the clinicians localize IOF and improve the ION anesthesia success rate. Furthermore, the occurrence of AIOF should be considered by physicians to reduce the chance of injuries to the infraorbital neurovascular complex.

RESUMO

In this work, activated carbon-supported zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO@AC NPs) were studied using the thermal synthesis method. The activated carbon-supported zinc oxide catalyst was characterized by UV-Vis spectrometry techniques, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Transmissive electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. XRD characterization measurements showed that the average size of the crystal NPs was 6.89 nm. According to the TEM analysis results, the nanoparticles' average size was 11.411 nm, and the particles had a spherical structure. The catalytic properties of the synthesized material were determined using the sodium borohydride methanolysis reaction. A kinetic study was performed regarding the effects of temperature, catalyst, and substrate concentration on the methanolysis reaction. Reusability experiments showed that the catalyst had excellent catalytic activity (85%), stability, and selectivity. As a result of the kinetic study, activation energy, enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS), and hydrogen production rate activation parameters were found to be 42.52 kJ/mol, 39.98 kJ/mol, -181.42 J/mol.K, 1257.69 mL/min. g, respectively. Also, the photocatalytic activity of ZnO@AC NPs was analyzed against Rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and the maximum degradation percentage was observed to be 76% at 120 min. This study aimed to develop the ZnO@AC NPs into an efficient photocatalyst to prevent industrial wastewater pollution and as a catalyst for hydrogen synthesis as an alternative energy source.

RESUMO

p_Aminophenol, namely 4-aminophenol (4-AP), is an aromatic compound including hydroxyl and amino groups contiguous together on the benzene ring, which are suitable chemically reactive, amphoteric, and alleviating agents in nature. Amino phenols are appropriate precursors for synthesizing oxazoles and oxazines. However, since the toxicity of aniline and phenol can harm human and herbal organs, it is essential to improve a reliable technique for the determination of even a trace amount of amino phenols, as well as elimination or (bio)degradation/photodegradation of it to protect both the environment and people's health. For this purpose, various analytical methods have been suggested up till now, including spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography, spectrofluorometric and capillary electrophoresis, etc. However, some drawbacks such as the requirement of complex instruments, high costs, not being portable, slow response time, low sensitivity, etc. prevent them to be employed in a wide range and swift in-situ applications. In this regard, besides the efforts such as (bio)degradation/photodegradation or removal of 4-AP pollutants from real samples, electroanalytical techniques have become a promising alternative for monitoring them with high sensitivity. In this review, it was aimed to emphasize and summarize the recent advances, challenges, and opportunities for removal, degradation, and electrochemical sensing 4-AP in real samples. Electroanalytical monitoring of amino phenols was reviewed in detail and explored the various types of electrochemical sensors applied for detecting and monitoring in real samples. Furthermore, the various technique of removal and degradation of 4-AP in industrial and urban wastes were also deliberated. Moreover, deep criticism of multifunctional nanomaterials to be utilized as a catalyst, adsorbent/biosorbent, and electroactive material for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors was covered along with their unique properties. Future perspectives and conclusions were also criticized to pave the way for further studies in the field of application of up-and-coming nanostructures in environmental applications.

RESUMO

A special type of two-dimensional (2D) material based conducting polymer was constructed by green synthesis and in-situ polymerization techniques. The 2D Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) were first synthesized with the combination of, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate dissolved in 20 mL algae extract under stirring. After stirring for about 2 h, and then finally sulfurization was initiated using sulfur powder in 20 mL of sulfuric solution and stirred for 8 h. The resulting black precipitates of MoS2 were collected by centrifugation at 5000 rpm. Moreover, the prepared MoS2 was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and form the MoS2@PGMA. Further, the MoS2@PGMA is combined with polyaniline (PANI) to form conducting polymer grafted thin film nanosheets named MoS2@PGMA/PANI with a thickness in micrometer size through grafting method. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and EDX techniques. To check the performance of materials the adsorption study was performed. Moreover, the adsorption study toward Cu2+ and Cd2+ showed a tremendous results and the maximum adsorption was 307.7 mg/g and 214.7 mg/g respectively. In addition, the pseudo-first and second order models as well as the adsorption isotherm were investigated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results were best fitted with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models. The regeneration study was also conducted and MoS2@PGMA/PANI nanosheets can be easily recycled and restored after five successful recycling. The established methodology for preparing the 2D materials and conducting polymer based MoS2@PGMA/PANI nanosheets is expected to be applicable for other multiple applications.

RESUMO

This study aimed to synthesize Ag NPs as a green catalyst for photocatalytic activity and to examine their biological activities. It was determined that they have high activity in catalytic and biological activities. The green synthesis which is an environmentally friendly and inexpensive method was used to synthesize Ag-NPs using Linum usitatissimum as a reducing agent. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the Ag NPs. In UV-Vis examination, Ag-NPs had intense peaks in the 435 nm region. The antibacterial activity of Ag NPs was investigated, and Ag NPs showed a high lethal effect against S. aureus, E. coli, B. subtilis, and MRSA. In addition, Ag NPs were tested for anticancer activity against the HT-29 colon cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line, healthy cell line L929-Murine Fibroblast cell Lines, and MIA PaCa-2 human pancreatic cancer cell line at various concentrations (1-160 µg/mL) and showed a high anticancerogenic properties against MDA-MB-231 cells. Ag NPs showed the ability of DNA cleavage activity. Also, the antioxidant activity of Ag NPs against DPPH was found to be 80% approximately. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of Ag NPs against methylene blue (MB) was determined to be 67.13% at the 180th min. In addition, it was observed that biogenic Ag NPs have high electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection. In the sensor based on Ag NPs, linearity from 1 µM to 5 µM was observed with a detection limit (LOD) of 1.323 µM for H2O2. According to these results, we conclude that the biogenic Ag NPs synthesized using Linum usitatissimum extract can be developed as an efficient biological agent as an antibacterial and anticancer also can be used as a photocatalyst for industrial wastewater treatment to prevent wastewater pollution.

RESUMO

Due to their widespread application in water purification, there is a significant interest in synthesising nanoscale photocatalysts. Nanophotocatalysts are primarily manufactured through chemical methods, which can lead to side effects like pollution, high-energy usage, and even health issues. To address these issues, "green synthesis" was developed, which involves using plant extracts as reductants or capping agents rather than industrial chemical agents. Green fabrication has the benefits of costs less, pollution reduction, environmental protection and human health safety, compared to the traditional methods. This article summarises recent advances in the environmentally friendly synthesis of various nanophotocatalysts employed in the degradation of azo dyes. This study compiles critical findings on natural and artificial methods to achieve the goal. Green synthesis is constrained by the time and place of production and issues with low purity and poor yield, reflecting the complexity of plants' geographical and seasonal distributions and their compositions. However, green photocatalyst synthesis provides additional growth opportunities and potential uses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Enhancing the quality of obstetric triage services requires a clear perception of the current situations and problems, this issue gained more importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to explore the obstetric and gynecological service providers' and recipients' perception and experience of the quality of obstetric triage services during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This research was a qualitative study carried out using conventional content analysis. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, and data collection was conducted using in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA software and conventional content analysis. Validity of the data was approved based on four criteria: credibility, dependability, conformability and transferability. RESULTS: Five themes emerged through analysis: "unpreparedness to deal with the COVID-19 resulting in disorganized triage", "threat to the physical and mental health of personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic", "degradation of the quality of services due to improper triage structure during the COVID-19 pandemic", "communicating with patients which is neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic" and finally "accountability required to improve the provision of services during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION: Obstetrics and gynecology service providers and recipients faced formidable challenges in the triage department during this pandemic caused by the complex and ambiguous nature of the Coronavirus. Identifying the problems, barriers and challenges in providing services to patients in this situation especially in triage, can lead to an improvement in the outcome of services.

RESUMO

One of the complications of menopause is sleep disorders, which affect women's health. Ocimum basilicum contains compounds that may affect sleep. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an oral capsule of O. basilicum leaf extract on sleep quality and the severity of insomnia in menopausal women. This triple-blind, randomized clinical trial study was performed on 60 Iranian menopausal women aged 40 to 65 years. Subjects were randomly assigned into two groups of intervention (each capsule containing 250 mg of O. basilicum extract and 250 mg Avicel) per day for 1 month and placebo. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality and Insomnia Intensity Index were used to assess sleep quality and severity of insomnia before, 2 weeks after and 1 month after the intervention. There was no statistically significant difference in the baseline variables between the intervention and placebo groups (p > .05). The total sleep quality scores in the two groups of intervention and placebo were 6.2 ± 0.3 versus 9.3 ± 0.3 (p < .001) and 3.7 ± 0.3 versus 9.1 ± 0.3 (p = .015) 2 weeks and 1 month after the intervention, respectively. The total insomnia severity scores in the two groups of intervention and placebo were 9.0 ± 0.3 versus 12.1 ± 0.3 (p < .001) and 5.6 ± 0.5 versus 11.0 ± 0.5 (p < .001) 2 weeks and 1 month after the intervention, respectively. Consumption of O. basilicum capsules improved sleep quality and insomnia in menopausal women. This study was approved (code IR.MUMS.NURSE.REC.1398.070) by the Ethic committee of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and registered at the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials, with the No. IRCT20200104046001N1 in January 2020.

RESUMO

In this study, the ionic liquid (Aliquat-336) and anionic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) bi-functionalized chitosan beads were prepared and characterised using different techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS and BET surface area analysis. The characteristic analysis confirmed the successful conjugation of chitosan beads with both surfactant and ionic liquid. The novel fabricated beads (CS-CTAB-AL) were efficiently employed, as a high-performance adsorbent, for the removal of Tartrazine (TZ), an anionic food dye, from polluted water. The optimum adsorption of TZ onto the CS-CTAB-AL was found at 2 g L-1 of adsorbent in the wide pH range of 4-11, whereas just 45 min was required to reach more than 90% adsorption efficiency in the studied conditions. Also, the adsorption and kinetic studies showed that the experimental data well fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of prepared beads was found to be 45.95 mg g-1 at 45 °C. The adsorption properties of enabling CS-CTAB-AL conjugation introduced a new type of adsorbents, exploited the combination of ionic liquid and surfactant capabilities for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

In our study, the electrochemical properties of a novel activated nanocomposite were studied with 2-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride/sodium dodecyl sulfate/graphene nanoplatelets on the screen-printed electrodes (2D-g-C3N4/SDS/GNPs/SPE). The as-fabricated sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, including wide dynamic ranges from 0.03 to 1.0 and 1.0-13.5 µM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10.0 nM. The fabricated 2D-g-C3N4/SDS/GNPs/SPE electrode exhibited high sensitivity, stability, good reproducibility, reusability, and repeatability towards DOX sensing. It can be utilized in real samples, including human plasma and urine, with excellent correlations and coefficients of variation below 6.0%. Therefore, this study presents potential application values in sensing DOX with efficient performance. Finally, the accuracy was attested by comparison with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as the reference method, signalizing a good agreement.

RESUMO

In this study, a magnetic chitosan/Al2O3/Fe3O4 (M-Cs) nanocomposite was developed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionalization to enhance its adsorption behavior for the removal of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) metal ions from aqueous solution. The results revealed that the EDTA functionalization of M-Cs increased its adsorption capacity ~9.1, ~5.6 and ~14.3 times toward Cu, Cd and Zn ions. The maximum adsorption capacity followed the order of Cd(II) > Cu(II) > Zn(II) and the maximum adsorption efficiency was achieved at pH of 5.3 with the removal percentage of 99.98, 93.69 and 83.81 %, respectively, for the removal of Cu, Cd and Zn ions. The metal ions adsorption kinetic obeyed pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir isothermal was found the most fitted model for their adsorption isothermal experimental data. In addition, the thermodynamic study illustrated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous in nature.

RESUMO

This study explores the role of renewable energy (RE) penetration in Malaysia's energy security (ES) and its implications for the country's target of 20% capacity in the energy mix by 2025. Renewable energy (RE) is a critical driver of long-term energy security. In 2018, the share of renewable energy in Malaysia's energy mix was 9%, falling far short of the national target of 20% penetration by 2025. This study employs a system dynamics approach to investigate the relationship between RE penetration and correlated indicators from energy security (ES) dimensions: energy availability, environmental sustainability, and socio-economics. The causal relationships between the three-dimensional indicators of ES have been established using causal and stock and flow logic. Simulated results show that energy consumption has increased sharply, while energy efficiency and economic growth have only increased by a small margin with an increase in RE from 2015 to 2020. The energy intensity is expected to rise slightly by the end of the fifth year. As a result, the overall impact is positive for Malaysia's environmental sustainability while reducing its reliance on energy imports and meeting national economic growth demands.

RESUMO

The delivery of hydrophilic drugs from hydrophobic polymers is a long-standing challenge in the biomaterials field due to the limited solubility of the therapeutic agent within the polymer matrix. In this work, we develop a drug delivery mechanism that enables the impregnation and subsequent elution of hydrophilic drugs from a hydrophobic polymer material. This was achieved by synthesizing core cross-linked star polymer amphiphiles with hydrophilic cores and hydrophobic coronas. While significant work has been done to create nanocarriers for hydrophilic drugs, this work is distinct from previous work in that it designs amphiphilic and core cross-linked particles for controlled release from hydrophobic matrices. Ultraviolet-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization was used to synthesize the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrophilic cores of the star polymers, and hydrophobic coronas of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) were then built onto the stars using ring-opening polymerization. We illustrated the cytocompatibility of PCL loaded with these star polymers through human endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation for up to 7 days, with star loadings of up to 40 wt %. We demonstrated successful loading of the hydrophilic drug heparin into the star polymer core, achieving a loading efficiency and content of 50 and 5%, respectively. Finally, the heparin-loaded star polymers were incorporated into a PCL matrix and sustained release of heparin was illustrated for over 40 days. These results support the use of core cross-linked star polymer amphiphiles for the delivery of hydrophilic drugs from hydrophobic polymer matrices. These materials were developed for application as drug-eluting and biodegradable coronary artery stents, but this flexible drug delivery platform could have impact in a broad range of medical applications.

RESUMO

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) target the endocrine system by interfering with the natural hormones in the body leading to adverse effects on human and animal health. These chemicals have been identified as major polluting agents in wastewater effluents. Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, industrial compounds, pesticides, dyes, and heavy metals are examples of substances that could be considered endocrine active chemicals. In humans, these chemicals could cause obesity, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, autism, reproductive abnormalities, and thyroid problems. While in wildlife, dysfunctional gene expression could lead to the feminization of some aquatic organisms, metabolic diseases, cardiovascular risk, and problems in the reproductive system as well as its levels of hatchability and vitellogenin. EDCs could be effectively removed from wastewater using advanced technologies such as reverse osmosis, membrane treatment, ozonation, advanced oxidation, filtration, and biodegradation. However, adsorption has been proposed as a more promising and sustainable method for water treatment than any other reported technique. Increased attention has been paid to biodegradable polymers and their nano-composites as promising adsorbents for the removal of EDCs from wastewater. These polymers could be either natural, synthetic, or a combination of both. This review presents a summary of the most relevant cases where natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers have been used for the successful removal of EDCs from wastewater. It demonstrates the effectiveness of these polymers as favorable adsorbents for novel wastewater treatment technologies. Hitherto, very limited work has been published on the use of both natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers to remove EDCs from wastewater, as most of the studies focused on the utilization of only one type, either natural or synthetic. Therefore, this review could pave the way for future exploration of biodegradable polymers as promising and sustainable adsorbents for the removal of various types of pollutants from wastewater.

RESUMO

In the present study, a novel 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BmImBr) impregnated chitosan beads were prepared and characterized using different methods, including XRD, FT-IR, EDX, SEM and BET. The FTIR analysis revealed that the BmImBr was successfully conjugated with the chitosan in the beads structure. The prepared beads were used as an efficient sorbent for the fast removal of methylene blue, as cationic dye model, from aqueous solution, whereas just 25 min was required to reach 86% removal efficiency. The increasing of BmImBr amount improved the adsorption performance of prepared beads. Also, it was found that the dye can be higher adsorbed on the beads surface by increasing the sorbent dosage and pH of solution, while the optimum dosage and pH were obtained 3 mg/L and 11, respectively. The kinetic study showed that the MB adsorption onto the CS-BmImBr beads follows the pseudo-fist order model and the intrinsic penetration controls the adsorption process. The properties of prepared chitosan- BmImBr IL conjugation confirmed that it can be exploited as an efficient adsorbent in the wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The extent to which patients with End-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at a higher risk of COVID-19-related death is still unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the ESRD patients at increased risk of COVID-19 -related death and its associated factors. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 74 patients with ESRD and 446 patients without ESRD hospitalized for COVID-19 in Alborz province, Iran, from Feb 20 2020 to Apr 26 2020. Data on demographic factors, medical history, Covid-19- related symptoms, and blood tests were obtained from the medical records of patients with confirmed COVID-19. We fitted univariable and multivariable Cox regression models to assess the association of underlying condition ESRD with the COVID-19 in-hospital mortality. Results were presented as crude and adjusted Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). In the ESRD subgroup, demographic factors, medical history, symptoms, and blood parameters on the admission of survivors were compared with non-survivors to identify factors that might predict a high risk of mortality. RESULTS: COVID-19 patients with ESRD had in-hospital mortality of 37.8% compared to 11.9% for those without ESRD (P value < 0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, age, sex, and comorbidities, ESRD patients were more likely to experience in-hospital mortality compared to non-ESRD patients (Adjusted HR (95% CI): 2.59 (1.55-4.32)). The Log-rank test revealed that there was a significant difference between the ESRD and non-ESRD groups in terms of the survival distribution (χ2 (1) = 21.18, P-value < 0.001). In the ESRD subgroup, compared to survivors, non-survivors were older, and more likely to present with lack of consciousness or O2 saturation less than 93%; they also had lower lymphocyte but higher neutrophil counts and AST concentration at the presentation (all p -values < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that the presence of ESRD would be regarded as an important risk factor for mortality in COVID-19 patients, especially in those who are older than age 65 years and presented with a lack of consciousness or O2 saturation less than 93%.
