RESUMO

Toxic doses of formaldehyde (FA) can cause oxidative damage and impair energy metabolism. Asprosin (ASP) and subfatin (SUB) are adipokines produced by adipose tissue that help regulate energy metabolism. We investigated the effects of carvacrol (CAR), an antioxidant with hepatoprotective properties, on ASP and SUB in rats exposed to FA using immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. We used 42 male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups of seven: group 1, untreated control; group 2, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week); group 3, CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 4, CAR-40; group 5, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 6, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-40 (40 mg/kg). Levels of ASP and SUB, and total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in blood and liver tissue were measured using ELISA. ASP and SUB immunoreactivity was assessed using immunohistochemistry. The number of apoptotic cells was determined using the TUNEL method. The number of apoptotic cells in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. TOS in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. The numbers of apoptotic cells and TOS in group 3 were decreased compared to group 1. TOS was decreased in group 6 compared to group 2, but TOS was increased compared to group 1. We found ASP and SUB immunoreactivity in the liver. All alterations were reversed by addition of CAR. It appears that FA disrupts energy metabolism and CAR ameliorates the destructive effects of FA when used at appropriate doses, although CAR might be harmful at high doses.

In this experimental study, harmful effects of formaldehyde (FA) inhalation on sperm concentration, sperm quality, serum testosterone levels and the rat testes were investigated. In addition, the possible protective effects of rose oil against to these harmful effects were evaluated. For this purpose, 21 albino-Wistar rats were used. The rats in Group I were used as control group. When the rats of Group II were exposed FA (10 ppm/1 h) for 35 days, the rats of Group III inhalated rose oil (1 ml/1 h) after FA. The epididymal tissues were taken for sperm analysing and the testes were removed for histological examination. In addition, testosterone levels were determined from the blood samples. Although the testosterone levels, the epididymal sperm concentration, and the progressive sperm motility significantly decreased, the abnormal sperm rate significantly increased in the Group II when compared to Group I. In the Group III, these damages were seen less. When the rats in the Group II compared with the control group, there were serious histological damages. In the Group III, it was determined that the histological changes were less than group II. It can be expressed that serious damages occurred via formaldehyde exposure in male reproductive system and that the rose oil had protective effects against these damages.

OBJECTIVE: Fabella is a sesamoid whose prevalence is unstable and can be found as bone or cartilage, which changes over time. This study aims to reveal the prevalence, distribution, gender differences, and morphometric characteristics of cartilage and bony fabella in the Turkish population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 2.035 individuals over 18 years of age. MR images of 121 individuals, whose MR images of both knees could be obtained by anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the participants, were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: The prevalence of fabella was 39.6% in females, 38.4% in males, and 38.8% in total. The prevalence of cartilage fabella was 9.1%, whereas bone fabella incidence was 29.7% regardless of gender. The fabella's mean thickness, width, length, and distance to the epicondylus lateralis femoris were 3.84 mm, 6.04 mm, 6.23, and 31.26 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The data of this study showing the occurrence and morphometric characteristics of bony and cartilaginous fabella allow early and accurate diagnosis of various pathological conditions caused by fabella.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, the harmful effects of formaldehyde (FA) on serum testosterone levels and epididymal sperm characteristics were investigated. In addition, possible protective effect of lavender oil was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this purpose, 21 adult male Wistar-Albino rats were used. The rats of group I was used as control group. The rats of group II were exposed FA (10 ppm/1 hour) for 35 days. The rats of group III inhaleted lavender oil (1 ml/1 hour) with FA. RESULTS: While the testosterone levels, the epididymal sperm concentration and the progressive sperm motility were significantly decreased, the abnormal sperm rate was significantly increased in FA treated group when compared to control group. However, in group III, the epididymal sperm concentration and the progressive sperm motility were significantly increased, the abnormal sperm rate was significantly decreased in comparison with the FA treated group. CONCLUSION: It can be expressed that serious damages occured via formaldehyde exposure in reproductive system and that the lavender oil had protective effects against these damages.

The mental foramen has been reported to vary in position in different ethnic groups. Repeated failures during injections and operative procedures involving the mental foramen suggest the presence of local differences in a given population. The aim of the present study was to investigate possible local differences of the mental foramen in Eastern Anatolian individuals in the Turkish population. The present investigation is based on the examination of 70 adult mandibles. The study consisted of three measurements, to include the relations of the mental foramen to the following: 1) the lower teeth; 2) the body of mandible; 3) the mandibular symphysis and posterior border of the ramus of the mandible. The most common position of the foramen was in line with the longitudinal axis of the second premolar tooth (relation IV), at the midpoint of the mandibular body height and at 1/3.5 of the distance from the mandibular symphysis to the posterior border of the ramus. Local differences of the mental foramen may occur in a population. Prior to surgery knowledge of the most common location of the foramen peculiar to a local population may enable effective mental block anaesthesia to be provided.

Overproduction of free radicals is important in the pathogenesis of the cerebral damage induced by ischemia reperfusion. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, an active component of propolis extract, exhibits antioxidant properties. The study was carried out in 16 male Wistar albino rats, divided into two groups: ischemia reperfusion and ischemia reperfusion with caffeic acid phenethyl ester. The middle cerebral artery was occluded for 60 min with an intraluminal suture, followed by 24-h reperfusion. In this study, widespread infarcted areas, red neurons (eosinophilic degeneration), pyknotic cells, vacuolization and neuroglial cell infiltration were observed in the cerebral cortex in the ischemia reperfusion group. In the caffeic acid phenethyl ester group, slightly infarcted areas were observed and neuroglial cell infiltration was not determined. Congestion of choroid plexus and pia mater was found more severe in the ischemia reperfusion group than in the caffeic acid phenethyl ester group. In the caffeic acid group, neuroglial cell activation was rare. Vacuolization, an indication of brain edema, was prevented by caffeic acid phenethyl ester. In the present study, we showed that pre-treatment with a single i.p. injection of caffeic acid phenethyl ester at 50 microM/kg dose reduced the structural changes.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a volatile organic chemical, which causes tissue damage, especially to the liver and kidney. In experimental animals it has been shown to be carcinogenic. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of exogenous melatonin administration on the CCl4-induced changes of some biochemical parameters in rat blood. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: Control, CCl4 and CCl4 plus melatonin (CCl4+MEL). Rats in CCl4 group were injected subcutaneously with CCl4 0.5 ml/kg in olive oil while rats in CCl4+MEL group were injected with CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg) plus melatonin (25 mg/kg in 10% ethanol) every other day for one month. Control rats were treated with olive oil. Serum urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total and conjugated bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT), total iron, and magnesium levels were determined. Serum AST, ALT, total and conjugated bilirubin, ALP, gamma-GT, and total iron levels were significantly higher in CCl4-treated rats than in the controls, while urea, total protein, and albumin levels were significantly lower. Melatonin treatment did not cause a significantly change in serum urea, total protein, and albumin levels. However, the elevations in AST, ALT, total and conjugated bilirubin, ALP, gamma-GT, and total iron levels induced by CCl4 injections were significantly reduced by melatonin. On the other hand, melatonin administration significantly decreased serum magnesium levels. These results indicate that melatonin could be a protective agent against the CCl4 toxicity in rats, most likely through its antioxidant and free radical scavenger effects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our paper is discussing anomalies of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle with presenting our case in light literature. METHODS: During dissection of the submental region of 26 years old Turkish female embedded cadaver, for this educational purpose in 2000, bilateral accessory digastric muscle was observed. RESULTS: The anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric muscle had their normal origin and course and were joined by an intermediate tendon, the accessory anterior bellies originated from the digastric fossa, and inserted to the hyoid bone, with a common fibrous band. The accessory anterior bellies of the digastric muscle were in the same shape and coursed parallel to each other. CONCLUSION: Anatomical variations of the anterior bellies of the digastric muscles can be easily confused with pathological conditions in CT and MR imaging, it is necessary to recognize that muscle variants of the digastric muscle occur to avoid confusion when diagnosing abnormal lesions of the floor of the mouth and submental region. In human body, such as these muscle variations have clinical significance.

Despite their beneficial effects, aminoglycosides including gentamicin (GEN) have considerable nephrotoxic side-effects. The toxicity of GEN at the level of the kidney seems to relate to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS have been reported to be involved in the activation of protein kinase C (PKC). The unique structural aspects of PKC cause it to function as a sensor for oxidative stress. It seems likely that the increased NAD(P)H oxidase-derived superoxide (O2) production is at least in part mediated by PKC. We investigated the effects of chelerythrine, a commonly used PKC inhibitor, on GEN-induced changes of renal malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) generation, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities, glutathione (GSH) content, and serum creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. Morphological changes in the kidney were also examined. GEN administration to control rats increased MDA and NO generation but decreased CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities, and GSH content. Chelerythrine administration with GEN caused significantly decreased MDA, NO generation and increased CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities, and GSH content when compared with GEN alone. Chelerythrine also significantly decreased serum Cr and BUN levels. Morphological changes in the kidney including tubular necrosis were evaluated qualitatively. Both biochemical findings and histopathological evidence showed that administration of chelerythrine reduced the GEN-induced kidney damage. We propose that chelerythrine acts in the kidney as a potent scavenger of free radicals to prevent the toxic effects of GEN via the inhibition of a PKC pathway.

The aim of this study was to examine effects of photoperiod on the ultrastructure of Leydig cells in rat. For this purpose, 21 male Wistar rats were used. Animals were divided into three groups: Control rats in group I were kept under 12 hrs light: 12 hrs dark conditions (12L: 12D) for 10 weeks. Animals in group II were exposed to long photoperiods (18L: 6D), while rats in group III were exposed to short photoperiods (6L:18D) for 10 weeks. At the end of the experiment, all animals were killed by decapitation and blood samples were obtained. Serum testosterone levels were determined with the use of a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. The testes of all rats were removed and weighed, then processed for light and electron microscopy. For morphometric comparison, diameters of seminiferous tubules in each group were measured. In rats exposed to long photoperiods, testicular weights, diameters of seminiferous tubules and serum testosterone levels were significantly increased as compared to those in control rats, whereas exposure of rats to short photoperiods resulted in a significant decrease of testicular weights, diameters of seminiferous tubules and serum testosterone levels as compared to those in control rats and rats maintained in long photoperiods. The amount of mitochondria and cytoplasmic secretory granules were increased in the cytoplasm of Leydig cells of rats exposed to long photoperiods. Furthermore, an increase in extensiveness of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cell cytoplasm was noticed in this group, whereas a decrease in mitochondria and cytoplasmic secretory granules of the Leydig cell cytoplasm was seen in rats exposed to short photoperiods. The results of our study indicate that testicular functions increase after exposure to long photoperiods and decrease after exposure to short photoperiods.
