RESUMO

We report the first observation of the spin Hall conductivity spectrum in GaAs at room temperature. Our terahertz polarimetry with a precision of several µrads resolves the Faraday rotation of terahertz pulses arising from the inverse spin Hall effect of optically injected spin-polarized electrons. The obtained spin Hall conductivity spectrum exhibits an excellent quantitative agreement with theory, demonstrating a crossover in the dominant origin from impurity scattering in the dc regime to the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in the terahertz regime. Our spectroscopic technique opens a new pathway to analyze anomalous transports related to spin, valley, or orbital degrees of freedom.

We generated gain-switched pulses via electrical pulse excitations in a 1270 nm distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode (LD) with a direct-modulation bandwidth of 30 GHz. The measurements revealed short-pulse widths of 5.3 and 8.8 ps with and without chirp compensation, via a single-mode optical fiber. The 5.3 ps pulses exhibited a spectral width of 0.40 nm (spectral bandwidth of 71 GHz), yielding a time-bandwidth product of 0.38. Although the gain-switched pulses in DFB LDs inherently contain linear and nonlinear chirp, optimized pumping conditions enable generation of nearly transform-limited ps pulses after linear chirp compensation.

We have directly generated optical pulses having a duration of 0.56 ps with a peak power of 25 W by gain switching of multi-section semiconductor lasers in which the optimized lengths of the absorption and gain regions were 50 and 200 µm, respectively. Even though the experiment was conducted via impulsive optical pumping at a low temperature, we observed that the multi-section gain switching suppresses the low-energy tail and chirping inherent to conventional gain switching in single-section lasers and is useful in direct short-pulse generation.

Representative marine materials such as biopolymers and bioceramics contain bioactive properties and are applied in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. The marine organism-derived extracellular matrix (ECM), which consists of structural and functional molecules, has been studied as a biomaterial. It has been used to reconstruct tissues and improve biological functions. However, research on marine-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) among marine functional materials is limited. Recent studies on marine-derived EVs were limited to eco-system studies using bacteria-released EVs. We aimed to expand the range of representative marine organisms such as fish, crustaceans, and echinoderms; establish the extraction process; and study the bioactivity capability of marine EVs. Results confirmed that marine organism ECM-anchored EVs (mEVs) have a similar morphology and cargos to those of EVs in land animals. To investigate physiological effects, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-infected macrophages were treated with EVs derived from sea cucumber, fish, and shrimp. A comparison of the expression levels of inflammatory cytokine genes revealed that all types of mEVs alleviated pro-inflammatory cytokines, although to different degrees. Among them, the sea cucumber-derived EVs showed the strongest suppression ability. This study showed that research on EVs derived from various types of marine animals can lead to the development of high value-added therapeutics from discarded marine wastes.

OBJECTIVE. The purposes of this study were to assess the performance of a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for automatic segmentation of prostates on MR images and to compare the volume estimates from the 3D CNN with those of the ellipsoid formula. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study included 330 MR image sets that were divided into 260 training sets and 70 test sets for automated segmentation of the entire prostate. Among these, 162 training sets and 50 test sets were used for transition zone segmentation. Assisted by manual segmentation by two radiologists, the following values were obtained: estimates of ground-truth volume (VGT), software-derived volume (VSW), mean of VGT and VSW (VAV), and automatically generated volume from the 3D CNN (VNET). These values were compared with the volume calculated with the ellipsoid formula (VEL). RESULTS. The Dice similarity coefficient for the entire prostate was 87.12% and for the transition zone was 76.48%. There was no significant difference between VNET and VAV (p = 0.689) in the test sets of the entire prostate, whereas a significant difference was found between VEL and VAV (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found among the volume estimates in the test sets of the transition zone. Overall intraclass correlation coefficients between the volume estimates were excellent (0.887-0.995). In the test sets of entire prostate, the mean error between VGT and VNET (2.5) was smaller than that between VGT and VEL (3.3). CONCLUSION. The fully automated network studied provides reliable volume estimates of the entire prostate compared with those obtained with the ellipsoid formula. Fast and accurate volume measurement by use of the 3D CNN may help clinicians evaluate prostate disease.

We investigate the photon-dressed state of excitons in bulk GaAs by optical pump-probe spectroscopy. We reveal that the high-energy branch of the dressed states continuously evolves into a singular enhancement at the absorption edge in the high-density region where the exciton picture is no longer valid. Comparing the experimental result with a simulation based on semiconductor Bloch equations, we show that the dressed state in such a high-density region is better viewed as a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like state, which has been theoretically anticipated to exist over decades. Having seen that the dressed state can be regarded as a macroscopic coherent state driven by an external light field, we also discuss the decoherence from the dressed state to an incoherent state after the photoexcitation in view of the Coulomb enhancement in the transient absorption.

High harmonic spectroscopy in solids is emerging as a new tool to investigate ultrafast electron dynamics in the presence of strong optical fields. However, the observed high harmonic spectra do not usually reflect the microscopic origin of high harmonic generation (HHG) because of nonlinear and/or linear propagation effects. Here, we systematically investigate the HHG in reflection and transmission from gallium arsenide exposed to intense mid-infrared optical pulses. In transmission geometry, we find that the properties of high harmonics are drastically changed by nonlinear effects during the propagation of even tens of micrometers. Especially, the nonlinear absorption and/or nonlinearly induced ellipticity of the drive pulses as well as a cascade nonlinear mixing significantly alter the high harmonic signals in the case of the transmission geometry, making an extraction of the microscopic electron dynamics of gallium arsenide difficult. On the contrary, in reflection geometry, we obtain HHG spectra that are free from propagation effects, opening a general approach for high harmonic spectroscopy.

A new set of simply structured triphenylamine-based small molecules are synthesized and evaluated as dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and bulk heterojunction inverted organic solar cells (BHJ IOSCs). Surprisingly, the new amphiphilic-type HTM-1 (with internal hydrophilic groups and peripheral hydrophobic alkyl tails) showed better compatibility and performance than the actual target molecule, that is, HTM-2 in PSCs and BHJ IOSCs. Importantly, the HTM-1-based dopant-free PSCs and BHJ IOSCs exhibited high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.45 % and 8.34 %, respectively. These performances are superior and comparable to those of standard HTMs Spiro-OMeTAD (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene) and PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrene sulfonate) in PSCs and BHJ IOSCs, respectively. The enhanced device performance of the HTM-1-based PSCs is ascribed to its strong affinity towards the perovskite, properly aligned energy levels with respect to the perovskite valence band, and excellent hole transporting behavior. In addition, the well-organized energy levels of the HTMs showed excellent compatibility in BHJ IOSCs. The new amphiphilic-type HTM-based photovoltaic devices also showed long-term air stability over 700 h. These promising results offer new and unexpected prospects for engineering the interface between the photoactive material and HTMs in PSCs and BHJ IOSCs.

Transition metal compounds sometimes exhibit attractive colors. Here, we report a new oxychloride, Ca3ReO5Cl2, that shows unusually distinct pleochroism; that is, the material exhibits different colors depending on the viewing direction. This pleochroism is a consequence of the coincidental complex crystal field splitting of the 5d orbitals of the Re6+ ion in a square-pyramidal coordination of low symmetry in the energy range of the visible spectrum. Since the relevant d-d transitions show characteristic polarization dependence according to the optical selection rule, the orbital states are "visible" in Ca3ReO5Cl2.

We investigate the exciton Mott transition (EMT) by using optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy on GaAs, with realizing the condition of Mott's gedanken experiment by the resonant excitation of 1s excitons. We show that an anomalous metallic phase emerges on the verge of the EMT as manifested by a peculiar enhancement of the quasiparticle mass and scattering rate. From the temperature and density dependence, the observed anomaly is shown to originate from the electron-hole (e-h) correlation which becomes prominent at low temperatures, possibly suggesting a precursor of e-h Cooper pairing.

We calculated the conversion-efficiency limit ηsc and the optimized subcell bandgap energies of 1 to 5 junction solar cells without and with intermediate reflectors under 1-sun AM1.5G and 1000-sun AM1.5D irradiations, particularly including the impact of internal radiative efficiency (ηint) below unity for realistic subcell materials on the basis of an extended detailed-balance theory. We found that the conversion-efficiency limit ηsc significantly drops when the geometric mean ηint* of all subcell ηint in the stack reduces from 1 to 0.1, and that ηsc degrades linearly to logηint* for ηint* below 0.1. For ηint*<0.1 differences in ηsc due to additional intermediate reflectors became very small if all subcells are optically thick for sun light. We obtained characteristic optimized bandgap energies, which reflect both ηint* decrease and AM1.5 spectral gaps. These results provide realistic efficiency targets and design principles.

We analyzed the transient gain properties of three gain-switched semiconductor lasers with different materials and cavity structures during pulse lasing. All the semiconductor lasers were pumped with impulse optical pumping, and all the generated gain-switched output pulses were well described by exponential functions in their rise parts, wherein the transient gains were derived according to the rate-equation theoretical model. In spite of the different laser structures and materials, the results consistently demonstrated that a higher transient gain produces shorter output pulses, indicating the dominant role of higher transient gain in the generation of even shorter gain-switched pulses with semiconductor lasers.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormal cellular immune response has been considered to be responsible for oral lesions in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Zinc has been known to be an essential nutrient metal that is necessary for a broad range of biological activities including antioxidant, immune mediator, and anti-inflammatory drugs in oral mucosal disease. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of zinc in a phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-treated inflammatory model on human gingival fibroblast cells (hGFs). STUDY DESIGN: Cells were pre-treated with zinc chloride, followed by PMA in hGFs. The effects were assessed on cell viability, cyclooxygenease-1,2(COX-1,2) protein expression, PGE2 release, ROS production and cytokine release, Results: The effects were assessed on cell viability, COX1/2 protein expression, PGE2 release, ROS production, cytokine release. The results showed that, in the presence of PMA, zinc treatment leads to reduce the production of ROS, which results in decrease of COX-2 expression and PGE2 release. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, we suggest that zinc treatment leads to the mitigation of oral inflammation and may prove to be an alternative treatment for recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an anticancer treatment that generates excessive reactive oxygen species after photosensitizer treatments following specific wavelength irradiation. In another reports, PDT was regulated with autophagic cell death and apoptotic cell death. However, the mechanism of PDT resistance in PDT-stimulated cell death is unclear. In this study, we determined PDT resistance by autophagy and apoptosis in HP-PDT-treated oral cancer cells. MATERIALS & METHODS: Cells were treated hematoporphyrin and then irradiation with or without inhibitor. Cell lysates were checked protein expression with specific antibody. PDT resistance cells were generated with PDT repeated treatments. RESULTS: In HP-PDT, PDT induced autophagy through mTOR, ATG5, and LC3 in dose-dependent manners. Also, PDT at high dose induced apoptosis through caspase activation and PARP-1. Moreover, PARP-1 inhibitor protected cells against HP-PDT-induced cell death, but not by caspase inhibitor. At low dose of HP, autophagy inhibitor partially protected from HP-PDT-induced cell death. In autophagy phases, at low doses, HP-PDT regulated autophagic cell death through the inhibition of LC3II. Although autophagy inhibitor did not alter cell death directly, autophagy has associated with HP-PDT-induced apoptotic cell death by PARP-1 regulation. CONCLUSION: Taken together, HP-PDT induces apoptotic cell death with autophagy in oral cancer cells. PDT resistance is related to autophagy by PARP-1 regulation in oral cancer cells.

Understanding of the interaction between human MG63 osteoblast-like cells and surfaces is necessary in the field of tissue engineering and biomaterials. Various titanium surfaces are widely used as not only implant materials, but also as miniscrews in orthodontics. Our goal was to assess the proteomic response of MG63 osteoblast-like cells to different titanium surfaces. MG63 osteoblast-like cells were cultured on three different titanium surfaces: a smooth surface (S), a sandblasted with large grit and acid-etched surface (SLA), and a surface coated with a thin layer of hydroxyapatite (HA). Cells grown on the rougher surfaces (SLA and HA) exhibited downregulated cell proliferation and morphological changes. In the proteomic analysis, cells grown on the SLA surface showed upregulated expression of protocadherin-ß3 precursor, kinase insert domain receptor, fibroblast growth factor receptor-3, and insulin-like growth factor I, while the expression levels of cell adhesion kinase, collagen α-1(I) chain precursor, collagen type XI α2, and cadherin-11 were upregulated in cells grown on the HA surface. These proteins are known to be involved in osteoblast adhesion, growth, and differentiation. Thus, the surface properties of dental materials can influence the expression of proteins involved in osseointegration-related processes. Proteomic analysis may reveal changes in novel proteins that explain why osseointegration varies depending on surface properties.

Background: Jones fractures are common injuries that can be treated conservatively or surgically. However, the optimal treatment approach remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of conservative and operative treatments for Jones fractures and determine whether surgical treatment is necessary. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 69 patients with Jones fractures treated at our hospital. The patients were divided into 2 groups: conservative (C group; n = 46) and operative (O group; n = 23) treatments. Patients were followed up after 2, 6, and 12 weeks, and every 3 months thereafter. However, outpatient follow-ups were conducted between 8 and 10 weeks as needed. The mean follow-up period was 14.5 weeks (range, 12-24 weeks). In group C, the patients were treated with a non-weight-bearing cast for 4-6 weeks, followed by additional weight-bearing boot immobilization before returning to exercise. In group O, patients were treated surgically using a bicortical screw or intramedullary internal fixation. Time to radiologic union, clinical union, return to sports, visual analog scale (VAS), Foot Function Index-Revised Short Form (FFI-RS), and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores were evaluated. Results: Sixty-nine patients were included in the analysis. There were statistically significant differences in the time to radiologic union and return to sports, VAS score in the second week, and FFI-RS score in the 12th week. In group C, favorable outcomes were observed in terms of the time to return to sports, VAS score in the second week, and FFI-RS score in the 12th week. Contrastingly, in group O, better results were observed in time to radiologic union. The AOFAS score was excellent at the final follow-up, with no significant differences between groups. Complication rates were 10.8% and 13% in groups C and O, respectively. Conclusions: Surgical treatment is sometimes necessary for Jones fractures, but conservative treatment should also be considered because of the favorable outcomes. Conservative treatment can be a good option for patients who are risk-averse and place a high value on fracture healing without surgery.

Symbiotic microbes are essential for developing and growing Gastrodia elata, an achlorophyllous orchid of high medicinal value. Recently, the cultivation of G. elata in greenhouses has been adopted in Korea to produce mature tubers in a short time. However, no studies have been conducted on the microbial community structure of G. elata cultivated in greenhouse environments. Therefore, we analyzed the temporal features of bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere of G. elata at the juvenile [JT; 2 months after sowing (MAS)], young (YT; 6 MAS), and mature (MT; 11 MAS) tuber stages using culture-dependent and high-throughput sequencing technology. The richness and diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities decreased with tuber growth of G. elata. The symbiotic fungi Mycena sp. and Armillaria sp. as well as tuber extract inhibited the growth of various soil-inhabiting fungal and bacterial strains, indicating that G. elata and its symbiotic fungi play important roles in the selection of rhizosphere microbes. Mortierella rishikesha was the most abundant fungal species in the rhizosphere. We also identified the microorganisms potentially beneficial for G. elata development during greenhouse cultivation. Tubers and symbiotic fungi actively exert selective pressure on rhizosphere microbes, influencing the diversity and abundance of bacterial and fungal communities as G. elata grows. This study is a first report on the temporal microbial community structure of G. elata cultivated in greenhouse. The results on the associated microbiome of G. elata will help understand their beneficial interactions with G. elata and contribute to improvement in cultivation.

CONTEXT: Area-selective atomic layer deposition (AS-ALD) is a thin film deposition technique developed using conventional ALD by considering the surface chemical nature of the substrate. Selecting appropriate precursors is a critical step in developing an efficient AS-ALD process with high deposition selectivity. However, the current efficiency of research on viable AS-ALD precursors is limited because of the absence of theoretical design rules for precursor chemical structures. In this study, our objective is to propose molecular design principle for precursors for AS-ALD, particularly focusing on achieving high deposition selectivity of oxides on diverse substrates. Current preliminary results suggest that ML-based prediction model may provide a fundamental molecular-level understanding of the reactivity of metal oxide precursors, that can be useful for efficient selection of suitable precursors for AS-ALD. METHODS: We employ density functional theory (DFT) calculations and machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze the relationship between the structure and the surface reactivity of the precursor. Considering DFT calculation data (M06L/def2-tzvp, Gaussian 09 and Orca 4.0) and information on precursor structures, artificial neural networks (ANN, neuralnet, R) are applied to identify critical descriptors of the AS-ALD process. Furthermore, we utilize this ANN model to predict precursor reactivity according to surface terminations.

BACKGROUND: The extracellular matrix (ECM) has many functions, such as segregating tissues, providing support, and regulating intercellular communication. Cartilage-derived ECM (CECM) can be prepared via consecutive processes of chemical decellularization and enzyme treatment. The purpose of this study was to improve and treat osteoarthritis (OA) using porcine knee articular CECM. METHODS: We assessed the rheological characteristics and pH of CECM solutions. Furthermore, we determined the effects of CECM on cell proliferation and cytotoxicity in the chondrocytes of New Zealand rabbits. The inhibitory effect of CECM on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced cellular apoptosis was assessed using New Zealand rabbit chondrocytes and human synoviocytes. Finally, we examined the in vivo effects of CECM on inflammation control and cartilage degradation in an experimental OA-induced rat model. The rat model of OA was established by injecting monosodium iodoacetate into the intra-articular knee joint. The rats were then injected with CECM solution. Inflammation control and cartilage degradation were assessed by measuring the serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines and C-telopeptide of type II collagen and performing a histomorphological analysis. RESULTS: CECM was found to be biocompatible and non-immunogenic, and could improve cell proliferation without inducing a toxic reaction. CECM significantly reduced cellular apoptosis due to TNF-α, significantly improved the survival of cells in inflammatory environments, and exerted anti-inflammatory effects. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that CECM is an appropriate injectable material that mediates OA-induced inflammation.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of Gastrodia elata rhizome (GR) on thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver injury in dogs. We evaluated serum biochemical and hematological parameters, with emphasis on alanine transaminase (ALT), alanine phosphates (ALP), and nitric oxide (NO) levels, in dogs with TAA-induced liver injury. Materials and Methods: The animals were divided into a control group (Con), TAA group, Silymarin group (Sil, 50 mg/kg), Gastrodia rhizome low dose (GRL) (low) + TAA, GRH (high) + TAA, and GR high-dose group (GRH) control group. GRL and GRH were given daily at 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. TAA was given on days 1, 4, and 7 at a dose of 300 mg/kg. Results: GR significantly reduced liver injury in treated animals, as indicated by lowered levels of ALT (about 32% at day 21 in both GRL + TAA and GRH + TAA groups), ALP (about 17% and 21% at day 21 in both GRL + TAA, GRH + TAA groups, respectively), and NO (about 36% at day 21 in both GRL + TAA, GRH + TAA groups) compared to the TAA control group. Hematological parameters showed mild changes during the experiment. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed gastrodin, a major component of the GR extract, constitutes 2.6% of the extract. Conclusion: The GR demonstrated significant hepatoprotective effects against TAA-induced liver injury in dogs. The study provides evidence for the potential therapeutic use of GR in the management of liver diseases.
