RESUMO

We demonstrated highly active and durable hybrid catalysts (HCs) composed of small reduced graphene oxide (srGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for use as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Pt/srGO and Pt/CNTs were prepared by loading Pt nanoparticles onto srGO and CNTs using a polyol process, and HCs with different Pt/CNT and Pt/srGO ratios were prepared by mechanically mixing the two components. The prepared HCs consisted of Pt/CNTs well dispersed on Pt/srGO, with catalyst HC55, which was prepared using Pt/srGO and Pt/CNTs in a 5:5 ratio, exhibiting excellent oxygen reduction performance and high stability over 1000 cycles of the accelerated durability test (ADT). In particular, after 1000 cycles of the ADT, the normalized electrochemically active surface area of Pt/HC55 decreased by 11.9%, while those of Pt/srGO and Pt/C decreased by 21.2% and 57.6%, respectively. CNTs have strong corrosion resistance because there are fewer defect sites on the surface, and the addition of CNTs in rGO further improved the durability and the electrical conductivity of the catalyst. A detailed analysis of the structural and electrochemical properties of the synthesized catalysts suggested that the synergetic effects of the high specific surface area of srGO and the excellent electrical conductivity of CNTs were responsible for the enhanced efficiency and durability of the catalysts.

RESUMO

We demonstrated highly efficient oxygen reduction catalysts composed of uniform Pt nanoparticles on small, reduced graphene oxides (srGO). The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) size was controlled by applying ultrasonication, and the resultant srGO enabled the morphological control of the Pt nanoparticles. The prepared catalysts provided efficient surface reactions and exhibited large surface areas and high metal dispersions. The resulting Pt/srGO samples exhibited excellent oxygen reduction performance and high stability over 1000 cycles of accelerated durability tests, especially the sample treated with 2 h of sonication. Detailed investigations of the structural and electrochemical properties of the resulting catalysts suggested that both the chemical functionality and electrical conductivity of these samples greatly influence their enhanced oxygen reduction efficiency.

A number of previous studies revealed the importance of the frontoparietal network for attention and preparatory top-down control. Here, we investigated the theta (7-9 Hz) coherence of the right frontoparietal networks to explore the differences in connectivity changes for the right frontoparietal regions during spatial attention (i.e., attention to a specific location rather than a specific feature) and nonspatial attention (i.e., attention to a specific feature rather than a specific location) tasks. The theta coherence in both tasks was primarily maintained at a preparatory state, decreases after stimulus onset, and recovers to the level of the preparatory state after the response time. However, the theta coherence of the frontoparietal network during spatial attention was immediately maintained after cue-onset, whereas for the case of nonspatial attention, it was immediately decreased after cue-onset. In addition, the connectivity of the right frontoparietal network, including the middle frontal gyrus and superior parietal lobe, were significantly higher for spatial attention rather than for nonspatial attention, suggesting that the dorsal parts of right frontoparietal network are more engaged in spatial-specific attention from the preparatory state. These findings also suggest that these two attention systems involve the use of different regional connectivity patterns, not only in the cognitive state, but in the preparatory state as well.

An ultrathin nickel hydroxide layer electrodeposited on a carbon-coated three-dimensional porous copper structure (3D-C/Cu) is suggested as an additive and binder-free conductive electrode with short electron path distances, large electrochemical active sites, and improved structural stability, for high performance supercapacitors. The 3D-porous copper structure (3D-Cu) provides high electrical conductivity and facilitates electron transport between the Ni(OH)2 active materials and the current collector of the Ni-plate. A carbon coating was applied to the 3D-Cu to prevent the oxidation of Cu, without degrading the electron transport behavior of the 3D-Cu. The 3D-Ni(OH)2/C/Cu exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1860 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and good cycling performance, with an 86.5% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. When tested in a two-electrode system, an asymmetric supercapacitor exhibited an energy density of 147.9 W h kg-1 and a power density of 37.0 kW kg-1. These results open a new area of ultrahigh-performance supercapacitors, supported by 3D-Cu electrodes.

Few studies have directly compared the neural correlates of spatial attention (i.e., attention to a particular location) and nonspatial attention (i.e., attention to a feature in the visual scene) using well-controlled tasks. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of spatial and nonspatial attention in humans using intracranial electroencephalography. The topography and number of electrodes showing significant event-related desynchronization (ERD) or event-related synchronization (ERS) in different frequency bands were studied in 13 epileptic patients. Performance was not significantly different between the two conditions. In both conditions, ERD in the low-frequency bands and ERS in the high-frequency bands were present bilaterally in the parietal cortex (prominently on the right hemisphere) and frontal regions. In addition to these common changes, spatial attention involved right-lateralized activity that was maximal in the right superior parietal lobule (SPL), whereas nonspatial attention involved wider brain networks including the bilateral parietal, frontal, and temporal regions, but still had maximal activity in the right parietal lobe. Within the parietal lobe, spatial attention involved ERD or ERS in the right SPL, whereas nonspatial attention involved ERD or ERS in the right inferior parietal lobule. These findings reveal that common as well as different brain networks are engaged in spatial and nonspatial attention. The hippocampus plays a key role in the encoding and retrieval of information related to novel environments during spatial navigation. However, the neural basis for these processes in the human hippocampus remains unknown because it is difficult to directly measure neural signals in the human hippocampus. This study investigated hippocampal neural oscillations involved in encoding novel environments during spatial navigation in a virtual environment. Seven epileptic patients with implanted intracranial hippocampal depth electrodes performed three sessions of virtual environment navigation. Each session consisted of a navigation task and a location-recall task. The navigation task consisted of eight blocks, and in each block, the participant navigated to the location of four different objects and was instructed to remember the location of the objects. After the eight blocks were completed, a location-recall task was performed for each of the four objects. Intracranial electroencephalography data were monitored during the navigation tasks. Theta (5-8 Hz) and delta (1-4 Hz) oscillations were lower in the first block (novel environment) than in the eighth block (familiar environment) of the navigation task, and significantly increased from block one to block eight. By contrast, low-gamma (31-50 Hz) oscillations were higher in the first block than in the eighth block of the navigation task, and significantly decreased from block one to block eight. Comparison of sessions with high recall performance (low error between identified and actual object location) and low recall performance revealed that high-gamma (51-100 Hz) oscillations significantly decreased from block one to block eight only in sessions with high recall performance. These findings suggest that delta, theta, and low-gamma oscillations were associated with encoding of environmental novelty and high-gamma oscillations were important for the successful encoding of environmental novelty.

OBJECTIVE: While compulsive ordering and arranging, and a preoccupation with symmetry are common presentations of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little attention has been given to these types of symptoms in the assessment of patients with OCD. The goal of the present study was to develop and evaluate psychometric properties for the objective and quantitative measurement of compulsive symptoms related to symmetry and arranging. METHODS: Thirty-five normal volunteers performed computer-simulated environment tasks under four different conditions with or without a target and distraction. Primary dependent variables included several indices of time and manipulation of arranging behaviors. We evaluated the validity of the task by comparing the novel behavioral measures with standardized measures such as the Symmetry, Ordering and Arranging Questionnaire (SOAQ), Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL). RESULTS: We found a significant positive correlation between the arrangement time (time to complete the task) with the SOAQ score and the "ordering" subscore of the OCI-R. In addition, the number of manipulations was positively correlated with the SOAQ score and the "ordering" subscore of the OCI-R. There were no significant correlations between behavioral parameters and other scales measuring constructs less relevant to the symptoms of OCD related to ordering/symmetry. There was only a significant main effect of the target on the arrangement time. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the good convergent and discriminant validity of this task as a novel behavioral measure for the assessment of arranging compulsion symptoms. We can infer from the results that subjects are likely to spend more time in compulsive arranging when the target for the task is given.

Vanadium-based catalysts have been commercially used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR), owing to their high catalytic activity and effectiveness across a wide temperature range; however, their catalytic efficiency decreases at lower temperatures under exposure to SOX. This decrease is largely due to ammonium sulfate generation on the catalyst surface. To overcome this limitation, we added ammonium nitrate to the V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst, producing a V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst with nitrate functional groups. With this approach, we found that it was possible to adjust the amount of these functional groups by varying the amount of ammonium nitrate. Overall, the resultant nitrate V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst has large quantities of NO3- and chemisorbed oxygen, which improves the density of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites on the catalyst surface. Furthermore, the nitrated V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst has a high NOX removal efficiency and N2 selectivity at low temperatures (i.e., 300 °C); this is because NO3- and chemisorbed oxygen, generated by nitrate treatment, facilitated the occurrence of a fast SCR reaction. The approach outlined in this study can be applied to a wide range of SCR catalysts, allowing for the development of more, low-temperature SCR catalysts.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations often influence schizophrenia patients in many aspects. In order to develop effective behavioral interventions for overcoming enduring auditory hallucinations, it is necessary to understand how the annoying symptom affects the daily lives of the patients. This study evaluated the effect of hearing unusual voices on performing the activities of daily life in schizophrenia patients. METHODS: Eighteen hallucinating patients, 18 nonhallucinating patients and 20 normal controls performed the virtual daily-life task of packing 8 items for travel under 3 conditions: (1) without unusual voices and without avatars, (2) with unusual voices and without avatars and (3) with unusual voices and with avatars. Task completion time and the number of times the packing list was checked were recorded as a measure of the task performance. RESULTS: When exposed to unusual voices without avatars, hallucinating patients checked the packing list fewer times than nonhallucinating patients, and they required longer to complete the task, as positive and negative symptoms were worse. Subjective responses to unusual voices were stronger in hallucinating patients than in nonhallucinating patients. CONCLUSIONS: Daily-life activities of hallucinating patients may be less easily influenced by odd auditory stimuli in a nonsocial situation than those of nonhallucinating patients; however, hallucinating patients may feel more strongly affected by unusual voices. To better evaluate and thereby understand the difficulties faced by hallucinating patients in their daily life, the discrepancies between objective and subjective measures as well as social situations should be taken into consideration.

BACKGROUND: Several experimental studies in stroke patients suggest that mirror therapy and various virtual reality programs facilitate motor rehabilitation. However, the underlying mechanisms for these therapeutic effects have not been previously described. OBJECTIVES: We attempted to delineate the changes in corticospinal excitability when individuals were asked to exercise their upper extremity using a real mirror and virtual mirror. Moreover, we attempted to delineate the role of visual modulation within the virtual environment that affected corticospinal excitability in healthy subjects and stroke patients. METHODS: A total of 18 healthy subjects and 18 hemiplegic patients were enrolled into the study. Motor evoked potential (MEP)s from transcranial magnetic stimulation were recorded in the flexor carpi radialis of the non-dominant or affected upper extremity using three different conditions: (A) relaxation; (B) real mirror; and (C) virtual mirror. Moreover, we compared the MEPs from the virtual mirror paradigm using continuous visual feedback or intermittent visual feedback. RESULTS: The rates of amplitude increment and latency decrement of MEPs in both groups were higher during the virtual mirror task than during the real mirror. In healthy subjects and stroke patients, the virtual mirror task with intermittent visual feedback significantly facilitated corticospinal excitability of MEPs compared with continuous visual feedback. CONCLUSION: Corticospinal excitability was facilitated to a greater extent in the virtual mirror paradigm than in the real mirror and in intermittent visual feedback than in the continuous visual feedback, in both groups. This provides neurophysiological evidence supporting the application of the virtual mirror paradigm using various visual modulation technologies to upper extremity rehabilitation in stroke patients.

Hydrogen production, which is in the spotlight as a promising eco-friendly fuel, and the need for inexpensive and accurate electronic devices in the biochemistry field are important emerging technologies. However, the use of electrocatalytic devices based on expensive noble metal catalysts limits commercial applications. In recent years, to improve performance and reduce cost, electrocatalysts based on cheaper copper or nickel materials have been investigated for the non-enzymatic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we demonstrate a facile and easy electrochemical method of forming a cheap nickel copper double hydroxide (NiCu-DH) electrocatalyst deposited onto a three-dimensional (3D) CuNi current collector, which can effectively handle two different reactions due to its high activity for both the GOR and the HER. The as-prepared electrode has a structure comprising abundant 3D-interconnected porous dendritic walls for easy access of the electrolyte ions and highly conductive networks for fast electron transfer; additionally, it provides numerous electroactive sites. The synergistic combination of the dendritic 3D-CuNi with its abundant active sites and the self-made NiCu-DH with its excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose and HER enables use of the catalyst for both reactions. The as-prepared electrode as a glucose sensor exhibits an outstanding glucose detection limit value (0.4 µM) and a wide detection range (from 0.4 µM to 1.4 mM) with an excellent sensitivity of 1452.5 µA/cm2/mM. The electrode is independent of the oxygen content and free from chloride poisoning. Furthermore, the as-prepared electrode also requires a low overpotential of -180 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode to yield a current density of 10 mA/cm2 with a Tafel slope of 73 mV/dec for the HER. Based on this performance, this work introduces a new paradigm for exploring cost-effective bi-functional catalysts for the GOR and HER.

Argyrodite solid electrolytes such as lithium phosphorus sulfur chloride (Li6PS5Cl) have recently attracted great attention due to their excellent lithium-ion transport properties, which are applicable to all-solid-state lithium batteries. In this study, we report the improved ionic conductivity of an argyrodite solid electrolyte, Li6PS5Cl, in all-solid-state lithium batteries via the co-doping of chlorine (Cl) and aluminum (Al) elements. Electrochemical analysis was conducted on the doped argyrodite structure of Li6PS5Cl, which revealed that the substitution of cations and anions greatly improved the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. The ionic conductivity of the Cl- and Al-doped Li6PS5Cl (Li5.4Al0.1PS4.7Cl1.3) electrolyte was 7.29 × 10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature, which is 4.7 times higher than that of Li6PS5Cl. The Arrhenius plot of the Li5.4Al0.1PS4.7Cl1.3 electrolyte further elucidated its low activation energy at 0.09 eV.

Recent quantitative analyses of the corpus callosum (CC) have tried to assess the interhemispheric connectivity. Based on histological results showing an expansion of callosal extent at the midsagittal plane, without fiber density alterations, callosal extent was interpreted as an index of interhemispheric connectivity. The microstructural properties of the CC have also been investigated extensively using diffusion tensor imaging, to assess interhemispheric connectivity. The relationships between axonal density and callosal extent need to be investigated to understand how these parameters reflect interhemispheric connectivity. We used a semi-automated CC segmentation scheme in T1-weighted magnetic resonance image and fractional anisotropy (FA) image, respectively. The parameterization method of the segmented CC was applied to 47 right-handed healthy adult subjects. The callosal extent and microstructural properties were measured using the callosal thickness and diffusion indices (FA, mean diffusivity, and axial and radial diffusivity), respectively. Our results revealed a correlation between callosal thickness and FA on the posterior body and isthmus of the CC, which suggests that these regions are more sensitive to fiber alterations than other regions. Based on this result, we suggest that both the extent of the CC and its microstructural properties should be considered together in the estimation of interhemispheric connectivity in healthy adult populations.

Sulcal pits are hypothesized to form early during development and be under tighter genetic control than other regions of the cortex. We investigated the relationship between the presence of sulcal pits and intellectual ability, estimated with the full-scale, verbal, and performance intelligence quotient (IQ), in the brains of 78 healthy young adults. We automatically extracted sulcal pits from magnetic resonance images and developed a method for their automatic labeling. The difference in the number of sulcal pits between high and average IQ groups for each labeled region was statistically analyzed. We found that in the high verbal IQ group a sulcal pit was more frequently present in the left posterior inferior frontal sulcus (70% in the high IQ group vs. 40% in the average IQ group) and the right posterior inferior temporal sulcus (70% vs. 43%), which have been reported to be regions of language function. Greater mean curvature of the deep sulcal areas in these regions was shown for the high verbal IQ group. This provides the complementary morphological information about the presence of more sulcal pits. These findings suggest that factors influencing verbal intelligence may emerge in the language areas early during cortical development and may be under tight genetic control.

Although social skills training (SST) is an effective approach for improving social skills for schizophrenia, the motivational deficit attenuates its efficacy. Virtual reality (VR) applications have allowed individuals with mental disabilities to enhance their motivation for rehabilitation. We compared SST using VR role-playing (SST-VR) to SST using traditional role-playing (SST-TR). This randomized, controlled trial included 91 inpatients with schizophrenia who were assigned to either SST-VR (n=46) or SST-TR (n=45). Both groups were administered over 10 semiweekly group sessions. An experienced, blinded rater assessed vocal, nonverbal and conversational skills. We also obtained data on motivation for SST and various social abilities. Throughout the 10 sessions, the SST-VR group (n=33) showed greater interest in SST and generalization of the skills than the SST-TR group (n=31). After SST, the SST-VR group improved more in conversational skills and assertiveness than the SST-TR group, but less in nonverbal skills. The VR application in role-plays of SST for schizophrenia may be particularly beneficial in terms of improving the conversational skills and assertiveness, possibly through its advantages in enhancing motivation for SST and generalization of the skills, and thus it may be a useful supplement to traditional SST.

The locally deepest regions of major sulci, the sulcal pits, are thought to be the first cortical folds to develop and are closely related to functional areas. We examined the spatial distribution of sulcal pits across the entire cortical region, and assessed the hemispheric asymmetry in their frequency and distribution in a large group of normal adult brains. We automatically extracted sulcal pits from magnetic resonance imaging data using surface-based methods and constructed a group map from 148 subjects. The spatial distribution of the sulcal pits was relatively invariant between individuals, showing high frequency and density in specific focal areas. The left and right sulcal pits were spatially covariant in the regions of the earliest developed sulci. The sulcal pits with great spatial invariance appear to be useful as stable anatomical landmarks. We showed the most significant asymmetry in the frequency and spatial variance of sulcal pits in the superior temporal sulcus, which might be related to the lateralization of language function to the left hemisphere, developing more consistently and strongly than for the right. Our analyses support previous empirical and theoretical studies, and provide additional insights concerning the anatomical and functional development of the brain.

In this study, we synthesized V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts with different crystallinities via one-sided and isotropic heating methods. We then investigated the effects of the catalysts' crystallinity on their acidity, surface species, and catalytic performance through various analysis techniques and a fixed-bed reactor experiment. The isotropic heating method produced crystalline V2O5 and WO3, increasing the availability of both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, while the one-sided method produced amorphous V2O5 and WO3. The crystalline structure of the two species significantly enhanced NO2 formation, causing more rapid selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions and greater catalyst reducibility for NOX decomposition. This improved NOX removal efficiency and N2 selectivity for a wider temperature range of 200 °C-450 °C. Additionally, the synthesized, crystalline catalysts exhibited good resistance to SO2, which is common in industrial flue gases. Through the results reported herein, this study may contribute to future studies on SCR catalysts and other catalyst systems.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is the most efficient NOX removal technology, and the vanadium-based catalyst is mainly used in SCR technology. The vanadium-based catalyst showed higher NOX removal performance in the high-temperature range but catalytic efficiency decreased at lower temperatures, following exposure to SOX because of the generation of ammonium sulfate on the catalyst surface. To overcome these limitations, we coated an NH4+ layer on a vanadium-based catalyst. After silane coating the V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst by vapor evaporation, the silanized catalyst was heat treated under NH3 gas. By decomposing the silane on the surface, an NH4+ layer was formed on the catalyst surface through a substitution reaction. We observed high NOX removal efficiency over a wide temperature range by coating an NH4+ layer on a vanadium-based catalyst. This layer shows high proton conductivity, which leads to the reduction of vanadium oxides and tungsten oxide; additionally, the NOX removal performance was improved over a wide temperature range. These findings provide a new mothed to develop SCR catalyst with high efficiency at a wide temperature range.

Noninvasive parcellation of the human cerebral cortex is an important goal for understanding and examining brain functions. Recently, the patterns of anatomical connections using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have been used to parcellate brain regions. Here, we present a noninvasive parcellation approach that uses "functional fingerprints" obtained by correlation measures on resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to parcellate brain regions. In other terms, brain regions are parcellated based on the similarity of their connection--as reflected by correlation during resting state--to the whole brain. The proposed method was used to parcellate the medial frontal cortex (MFC) into supplementary motor areas (SMA) and pre-SMA subregions. In agreement with anatomical landmark-based parcellation, we find that functional fingerprint clustering of the MFC results in anterior and posterior clusters. The probabilistic maps from 12 subjects showed that the anterior cluster is mainly located rostral to the vertical commissure anterior (VCA) line, whereas the posterior cluster is mainly located caudal to VCA line, suggesting the homologues of pre-SMA and SMA. The functional connections from the putative pre-SMA cluster were connected to brain regions which are responsible for complex/cognitive motor control, whereas those from the putative SMA cluster were connected to brain regions which are related to the simple motor control. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of the functional connectivity-based parcellation of the human cerebral cortex using resting state fMRI.

There is still debate over the neural mechanisms underlying pathogenic and even recovery processes of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Therefore, we attempted to validate the usefulness of resting-state functional connectivity analysis in assessing memory function and its neural correlation with the mammillothalamic tract in patients recovering from Wernicke's encephalopathy. Seven chronic alcoholics recovering from Wernicke's encephalopathy, 14 alcoholic comparisons without Wernicke's encephalopathy, and 14 healthy comparisons underwent functional connectivity MRI scans, as well as verbal and non-verbal memory tests after at least a 1 month abstinence from alcohol. Resting-state functional connectivity strength between the anterior thalamus and the mammillary bodies was investigated by calculating temporal correlations in magnetic resonance signal levels between the two regions during a 5-min passive viewing task. The mean values of the functional connectivity strength between the left anterior thalamus and the ipsilateral mammillary body differed significantly between Wernicke's encephalopathy patients and healthy comparisons (P = 0.014). This connectivity strength in alcoholic comparisons fell between those of the former two groups, with a significant difference from that of healthy comparisons (P = 0.038). In addition, the strength of this left-sided functional connectivity significantly correlated with delayed verbal recall scores (r = 0.771, P = 0.042) and verbal recognition score (r = 0.825, P = 0.022) in patients with Wernicke's encephalopathy. Our findings indicate that memory function in patients recovering from Wernicke's encephalopathy parallels the level of the mammillothalamic functional connectivity; this supports the usefulness of resting-state functional connectivity analysis as a practical alternative to pathological examination of the mammillothalamic tract in living patients with Wernicke's encephalopathy.
