RESUMO

Monolayers containing subnanometer striations of silica and hafnia to form composite materials at varying ratios are explored as a method to develop high-index dielectric layers with increased laser-induced-damage thresholds (LIDTs). These layers can then be used in multilayer dielectric coatings for short-pulse, high-peak-power laser applications, particularly in regions of the highest electric-field intensity. Fabrication is achieved by means of exposure to two different evaporant vapor plumes, where local exposure to each plume is controlled via shielding to prevent simultaneous exposure. The LIDT of the resulting layers has been evaluated at 1053 nm with 600-fs pulses. The results indicate that such hafnia/silica layers exhibit LIDTs similar to silica for a refractive index of ≤1.65. These results suggest that the use of these layers in locations subjected to high electric-field intensity within multilayer dielectric coatings may significantly improve the LIDT, with this deposition process providing particular benefit for scaling to large-aperture, high-fluence components.

RESUMO

Contamination of pulse compression gratings during the manufacturing process is known to give rise to reduced laser damage performance and represents an issue that has not yet been adequately resolved. The present work demonstrates that the currently used etching methods introduce carbon contamination inside the etched region extending to a 50- to 80-nm layer below the surface. This study was executed using custom samples prepared in both, a laboratory setting and by established commercial vendors, showing results that are very similar. The laser-induced-damage performance of the etched and unetched regions in the grating-like samples suggest that contaminants introduced by etching process are contributing to the reduction of the laser-induced damage threshold.

RESUMO

A low-temperature chemical cleaning approach has been developed to improve the performance of multilayer dielectric pulse-compressor gratings for use in the OMEGA EP laser system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results guided the selection of targeted cleaning steps to strip specific families of manufacturing residues without damaging the grating's fragile 3D profile. Grating coupons that were cleaned using the optimized method consistently met OMEGA EP requirements on diffraction efficiency and 1054 nm laser-damage resistance at 10 ps. The disappearance of laser-conditioning effects for the highest-damage-threshold samples suggests a transition from a contamination-driven laser-damage mechanism to defect-driven damage for well-cleaned components.

RESUMO

Three organic monolayers coatings were developed and tested for their effectiveness to increase cleaning efficiency of attached microscale particles by air flows. The experiments were performed using silica substrates coated with these organic thin films and subsequently exposed to stainless-steel and silica microparticles as a model of contamination. Laser-induced-damage tests confirmed that the coatings do not affect the laser-induced-damage threshold values. The particle exposure results suggest that although the accumulation of particles is not significantly affected under the experimental conditions used in this work, the coated substrates exhibit significantly improved cleaning efficiency with a gas flow. A size-distribution analysis was conducted to study the adsorption and cleaning efficiency of particles of different sizes. It was observed that larger size (> 5-µm) particles can be removed from coated substrates with almost 100% efficiency. It was also determined that the coatings improve the cleaning efficiency of the smaller particles (≤ 5 µm) by 17% to 30% for the stainless steel metal and 19% to 38% for the silica particles.

RESUMO

Water-soluble forms of α-tocopherol (TP) as an effective antioxidant were obtained by encapsulating it into nanoparticles (NPs) of amphiphilic copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (CPL1-TP) and N-vinylpyrrolidone with hexyl methacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (CPL2-TP) synthesized by radical copolymerization in toluene. The hydrodynamic radii of NPs loaded with TP (3.7 wt% per copolymers) were typically ca. 50 or 80 nm depending on copolymer composition, media, and temperature. Characterization of NPs was accomplished by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), IR-, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical modeling showed that TP molecules are capable to form hydrogen bonds with donor groups of the copolymer units. High antioxidant activity of both obtained forms of TP has been found by the thiobarbituric acid reactive species and chemiluminescence assays. CPL1-TP and CPL2-TP effectively inhibited the process of spontaneous lipid peroxidation as well as α-tocopherol itself. The IC50 values of luminol chemiluminescence inhibition were determined. Antiglycation activity against vesperlysine and pentosidine-like AGEs of TP water-soluble forms was shown. The developed NPs of TP are promising as materials with antioxidant and antiglycation activity and can be used in various biomedical applications.

RESUMO

The subject of the current research study is aimed at the development of novel types of contrast agents (CAs) for multi-energy computed tomography (CT) based on Ln-graphene composites, which include Ln (Ln = La, Nd, and Gd) nanoparticles with a size of 2-3 nm, acting as key contrasting elements, and graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) acting as the matrix. The synthesis and surface modifications of the GNFs and the properties of the new CAs are presented herein. The samples have had their characteristics determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. Multi-energy CT images of the La-, Nd-, and Gd-based CAs demonstrating their visualization and discriminative properties, as well as the possibility of a quantitative analysis, are presented.

RESUMO

Plasma-assisted electron-beam evaporation leads to changes in the crystallinity, density, and stresses of thin films. A dual-source plasma system provides stress control of large-aperture, high-fluence coatings used in vacuum for substrates 1m in aperture.

RESUMO

The physical mechanisms and ensuing material modification associated with laser-induced damage in multilayer dielectric high reflectors is investigated for pulses between 0.6 and 100 ps. We explore low-loss multilayer dielectric SiO2/HfO2 mirrors which are commonly employed in petawatt-class laser systems. The spatial features of damage sites are precisely characterized, enabling the direct correlation of the observed damage morphology to the location of energy deposition and the corresponding standing-wave electric-field intensities within the layer structure. The results suggest that there are three discrete damage-initiation morphologies arising from distinctly different mechanisms: the first prevailing at laser pulse lengths shorter than about 2.3 ps, while the other two are observed for longer pulses. Modeling of the thermomechanical response of the material to localized laser-energy deposition was performed for each type of damage morphology to better understand the underlying mechanisms of energy deposition and subsequent material response.

RESUMO

From November 2003 to March 2004 a total of 100 fecal specimens from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in the city of Birobidzhan, Eastern Russia were tested for the presence of diarrheal viruses by RT-multiplex PCR. Of these, 74 fecal specimens were positive for diarrheal viruses and this represented 74%. Among the diarrheal viruses detected, group A rotavirus was the most prevalent (67%; 67 of 100), followed by norovirus (4%; 4 of 100), group C rotavirus (1%, 1 of 100), sapovirus (1%; 1 of 100), and hepatitis A virus (1%; 1 of 100). It was found that 86.6% (58 of 67) of group A rotavirus were serotyped as G3. Sapovirus and hepatitis A virus were genetically determined to belong to GI/1 and subgenotype 1A, respectively. Interestingly, all norovirus isolates in the study turned out to make a novel cluster when polymerase-based grouping was performed. It is noteworthy to point out that these norovirus isolates were further genetically characterized as naturally occurring recombinants, which were firstly found circulating in the Russian population studied. Breakpoint analysis of recombinant norovirus showed that the recombination site was at the open reading frame (ORF)1/ORF2 overlap. This is the first report of the existence of acute gastroenteritis caused by recombinant norovirus in Eastern Russia.

RESUMO

Viral gastroenteritis is one of the most common illnesses in humans worldwide and it has a great impact on people. Recently, we reported three RT-multiplex PCR assays termed A, B and C that could detect three groups of diarrheal viruses; group A, B and C rotaviruses and adenovirus [Phan et al., J Med Virol 2004; 74:173-9]; norovirus GI and GII, sapovirus and astrovirus [Yan et al., J Virol Meth 2003; 114:37-44]; enteroviruses, hepatitis A and E viruses and influenza A virus [Phan et al., Arch Virol 2005; 1175-85], respectively. In the present study, we developed a novel protocol with a small volume of reaction mixture for RT and PCR products (only 8 microl and 11 microl, respectively) that can amplify genomes of target viruses simultaneously. A total of 100 fecal specimens from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in Birobiclzhan city, Eastern Russia, were collected during November 2003 and March 2004 and tested for the presence of those viruses by the novel RT-multiplex PCR protocol. Group A rotavirus was the most prevalent (67%), followed by norovirus GII (4%), group C rotavirus (1%), and sapovirus (1%). Interestingly, one fecal specimen turned out to be positive for hepatitis A virus. The sensitivity and specificity of RT-multiplex PCR assays with a novel protocol demonstrated a strong validation against the previously published RT-multiplex PCR. The findings clearly indicated that this novel protocol is simple and cost-effective to investigate the molecular epidemiology of acute gastroenteritis caused by diarrheal viruses. This report is the first, to our knowledge, detecting hepatitis A virus in feces from diarrheal infants and children in Eastern Russia.

RESUMO

The distribution of rotavirus G-types in the world appears to be changing, especially with the emergence of G3 and G9 in many countries. Sequence analysis of the VP7 gene was performed on the 27 human G3 rotavirus strains isolated in China, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam during 2001-2004. All the strains studied were clustered into the same branch of the phylogenetic tree. The comparison of the G3 deduced amino acid sequences between the studied Chinese strains and the strains circulating in China during 1986-1992 showed a wide range of amino acid substitutions (up to 13 amino acids in the VP7 antigenic regions). The two considerable changes both from aspartic acid to asparagine were located at positions 96 in antigenic region A and 213 in antigenic region C. Those amino acid substitutions of the Chinese G3 strains might involve in the emergence of G3 rotavirus in China during 2001-2003.

RESUMO

Petawatt solid-state lasers require meter-sized gratings to reach multiple-kilojoule energy levels without laser-induced damage. As an alternative to large single gratings, we demonstrate that smaller, coherently added (tiled) gratings can be used for subpicosecond-pulse compression. A Fourier-transform-limited, 650-fs chirped-pulse-amplified laser pulse is maintained by replacing a single compression grating with a tiled-grating assembly. Grating tiling provides a means to scale the energy and irradiance of short-pulse lasers.
