RESUMO

Chitosan is a natural polyfunctional polymer that can be modified to achieve compounds with tailored properties for targeting and treating different cancers. In this study, we report the development and anticancer potential of phosphorylated galactosylated chitosan (PGC). The synthesized compound was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy. The interaction of PGC with asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPR) and cellular internalization in HepG2 cells was studied using in silico and uptake studies respectively. PGC was evaluated for its metal chelating, ferric ion reducing, superoxide, and lipid peroxide (LPO) inhibiting potential. Further, anticancer therapeutic potential of PGC was evaluated against N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocellular carcinoma in a mice model. After development of cancer, PGC was administered to the treatment group (0.5 mg/kg bw, intravenously), once a week for 4 weeks. Characterization studies of PGC revealed successful phosphorylation and galactosylation of chitosan. A strong interaction of PGC with ASGP-receptors was predicted by computational studies and cellular internalization studies demonstrated 98.76 ± 0.53% uptake of PGC in the HepG2 cells. A good metal chelating, ferric ion reducing, and free radical scavenging activity was demonstrated by PGC. The anticancer therapeutic potential of PGC was evident from the observation that PGC treatment increased number of tumor free animals (50%) (6/12) and significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered tumor multiplicity as compared to untreated tumor group.

RESUMO

Disclosure of new molecular probes as chromogenic and fluorogenic cation sensors is scientifically exigent work. Recently chalcone derivatives gained more attention because of their structural variability. A suitable donor and acceptor groups separated by delocalized π-orbitals display excellent chromogenic and fluorogenic properties because of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). These designed molecular frameworks provide the coordination sites to the incoming metal ions results in small changes in the optical properties. In a typical sensing behavior, coordination leads to a large conjugation plane with the probe resulted in hypo/hyperchromic shifts or red/blue shifts. In this review, we tried to converge the reported chalcone-derived sensors and explored the design, synthesis, metal ion sensing mechanism, and practical application of the probes. We expect that this review gives a basic outline for researchers to explore the field of chalcone-based sensors further.

RESUMO

The bioreductive enzymes typically upregulated in hypoxic tumor cells can be targeted for developing diagnostic and drug delivery applications. In this study, a new fluorescent probe 4-(6-nitro-1,3-dioxo-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl)benzaldehyde (NIB) based on a nitronaphthalimide skeleton that could respond to nitroreductase (NTR) overexpressed in hypoxic tumors is designed and its application in imaging tumor hypoxia is demonstrated. The docking studies revealed favourable interactions of NIB with the binding pocket of NTR-Escherichia coli. NIB, which is synthesized through a simple and single step imidation of 4-nitro-1,8-naphthalic anhydride displayed excellent reducible capacity under hypoxic conditions as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry investigations. The fluorescence measurements confirmed the formation of identical products (NIB-red) during chemical as well as NTR-aided enzymatic reduction in the presence of NADH. The potential fluorescence imaging of hypoxia based on NTR-mediated reduction of NIB is confirmed using in-vitro cell culture experiments using human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells, which displayed a significant change in the fluorescence colour and intensity at low NIB concentration within a short incubation period in hypoxic conditions.

RESUMO

Electron beam induced effects on defect engineering and structural, morphological and optical properties of Ga doped ZnO (GaZnO) nanostructures for improved ultrafast nonlinear optical properties are presented. A microstructural analysis was carried out based on the Scherrer, Williamson-Hall, and size-strain models. All three models reveal a peak broadening effect upon electron beam irradiation (EBI) and the crystallite size of the films shows a decrease of 30% compared to unirradiated nanostructures. The decrease in intensity, variation in the peak position and broadening of the Raman E2H mode confirm that the EBI treatment introduces disorder into the nanostructures. The interband gap emissions observed in photoluminescence spectra are primarily due to defect-related emissions originating from intrinsic defects such as Zni, Oi, VZn, VO, VZn+, VO+ and OZn. The O1s core-level spectra show that the peak related to oxygen vacancy defects is suppressed upon EBI. Surface morphology studies reveal that the nucleation barriers of GaZnO nanostructures are reduced upon irradiation treatment resulting in a coalescence mechanism. Third harmonic generation studies show that higher electron-beam doses lead to the occurrence of enhanced THG signals due to a drastic change in the occupation of localized defect levels. Thermally induced nonlinear optical studies depict an improved χ(3) of 1.71 × 10-3 esu upon irradiation due to enhanced FCA induced TPA mechanism and non-radiative transitions which indicates the credibility of the grown films in photonic devices.

RESUMO

Classification of plastics is of great importance in the recycling industry as the littering of plastic wastes increases day by day as a result of its extensive use. In this paper, we demonstrate the efficacy of a combined laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)-Raman system for the rapid identification and classification of post-consumer plastics. The atomic information and molecular information of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene were studied using plasma emission spectra and scattered signal obtained in the LIBS and Raman technique, respectively. The collected spectral features of the samples were analyzed using statistical tools (principal component analysis, Mahalanobis distance) to categorize the plastics. The analyses of the data clearly show that elemental information and molecular information obtained from these techniques are efficient for classification of plastics. In addition, the molecular information collected via Raman spectroscopy exhibits clearly distinct features for the transparent plastics (100% discrimination), whereas the LIBS technique shows better spectral feature differences for the colored samples. The study shows that the information obtained from these complementary techniques allows the complete classification of the plastic samples, irrespective of the color or additives. This work further throws some light on the fact that the potential limitations of any of these techniques for sample identification can be overcome by the complementarity of these two techniques. RESUMO

A facile, rapid, and scalable in situ microwave-assisted solvothermal technique (MAST) has been developed to deposit anisotropic silver nanoparticles (AgNP) on various substrates in a solution medium. SEM-EDS and XRD were used to characterize the morphology and structure of the deposits. Deposition on non-patterned aluminium led to near-spherical AgNP agglomerates all across the surface. Deposition on the glass at optimum solution concentration led to mirror-like coatings comprising spherical ∼50 nm particles, whereas no coating occurred at lower concentrations. AgNPs decorated the hexagonal pattern formed on a nano-patterned aluminium (NPA) substrate. Among various precursor concentrations used for deposition on NPA, the 10 µM concentration resulted in conformal deposition, with nanoparticles decorating the hexagons in NPA. In contrast, AgNP density was lower in the concave dimples on NPA. Our work demonstrates a quick and easy approach for the AgNPs' deposition, with control over size, and morphology. It can be used for deposition on large substrates, potentially making it suitable for surface-enhanced spectroscopic applications.

RESUMO

Forged products are widespread in the market and there is an immediate need to counter this growing menace. Anti-counterfeit techniques using fluorescent materials with covert features that appear hidden under daylight and display characteristic fluorescence upon specific source irradiation have gained popularity. Carbon dots (CDs) that can be prepared through facile synthesis from various raw materials are a class of fluorescent materials that provide tremendous opportunities to combat counterfeiting. This work focuses on the fabrication of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) derived CDs via the solvothermal approach and their subsequent purification using column chromatography. The fifth fraction obtained exhibited remarkable yellow emission (λem = 540 nm) with a high fluorescence quantum yield of 53.22% and a lifetime of 4 ns. The CDs appeared quasi-spherical during TEM imaging with an average diameter of 1-3 nm and appeared polycrystalline from the SAED pattern. The XPS and TEM-EDS results suggested carbon as the major element along with oxygen and nitrogen as the other heteroatoms. The water-based ecofriendly ink formulated using the CDs was printed on UV dull paper using the flexography technique. The print-proof paper samples appeared pale pink under daylight and fluorescent yellow upon 365 nm UV illumination. Moreover, the stability of the print was confirmed upon exposure to strong UV radiation cycles and abrasion resistance. Besides, the fluorescence emission remained unaltered even after 5 months of storage under room temperature conditions. The ink was used to print on PVC sheets and FBB boards with good stability against scuffing, suggesting its applicability in the packaging industry. The CDs could also serve as fluorescent markers for identifying post-consumer plastic packaging for a circular economy.

RESUMO

A new mathematical algorithm is reported for the accurate and efficient analysis of pore properties of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) membranes using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. NAA membranes of the desired pore size were fabricated using a two-step anodic oxidation process. Surface morphology of the NAA membranes with different pore properties was studied using SEM images along with computerized image processing and analysis. The main objective was to analyze the SEM images of NAA membranes quantitatively, systematically, and quickly. The method uses a regularized shock filter for contrast enhancement, mathematical morphological operators, and a segmentation process for efficient determination of pore properties. The algorithm is executed using MATLAB, which generates a statistical report on the morphology of NAA membrane surfaces and performs accurate quantification of the parameters such as average pore-size distribution, porous area fraction, and average interpore distances. A good comparison between the pore property measurements was obtained using our algorithm and ImageJ software. This algorithm, with little manual intervention, is useful for optimizing the experimental process parameters during the fabrication of such nanostructures. Further, the algorithm is capable of analyzing SEM images of similar or asymmetrically porous nanostructures where sample and background have distinguishable contrast.

RESUMO

Pristine WO3 and Zn-doped WO3 were synthesized using the spray pyrolysis technique to detect ammonia gas. The prominent orientation of the crystallites along the (200) plane was evident from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) morphology indicated well-defined grains upon Zn doping with a smaller grain size of 62 nm for Zn-doped WO3 (Zn: WO3) film. The photoluminescence (PL) emission at different wavelengths was assigned to defects such as oxygen vacancies, interstitial oxygens, localized defects, etc. X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies confirmed the formation of oxygen vacancies in the deposited films. The ammonia (NH3) sensing analysis of the deposited films was carried out at an optimum working temperature of 250 °C. The sensor performance of Zn: WO3 was enhanced compared to pristine WO3 at 1 ppm NH3 concentration, elucidating the possibility of the films in sensing applications.

RESUMO

In the present investigation, electron beam-influenced modifications on the CO gas sensing properties of indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films were reported. Dose rates of 5, 10, and 15 kGy were irradiated to the IZO nano films while maintaining the In doping concentration to be 15 wt%. The wurtzite structure of IZO films is observed from XRD studies post electron beam irradiation, confirming structural stability, even in the intense radiation environment. The surface morphological studies by SEM confirms the granular structure with distinct and sharp grain boundaries for 5 kGy and 10 kGy irradiated films whereas the IZO film irradiated at 15 kGy shows the deterioration of defined grains. The presence of defects viz oxygen vacancies, interstitials are recorded from room temperature photoluminescence (RTPL) studies. The CO gas sensing estimations were executed at an optimized operating temperature of 300 °C for 1 ppm, 2 ppm, 3 ppm, 4 ppm, and 5 ppm. The 10 kGy treated IZO film displayed an enhanced sensor response of 2.61 towards low concentrations of 1 ppm and 4.35 towards 5 ppm. The enhancement in sensor response after irradiation is assigned to the growth in oxygen vacancies and well-defined grain boundaries since the former and latter act as vital adsorption locations for the CO gas.

RESUMO

The role of post synthesis annealing at different temperatures (200-600 °C) on the structural as well as luminescence properties of NaY80%F4:Yb17%,Er3% prepared via a coprecipitation method was found to change the structure from a cubic to hexagonal phase with a concomitant increase in upconversion luminescence by 12 times for the green region and 17 times for the red region. Addition of the Cr3+ ions (5-20 mol%) into the host followed by post annealing at 200-600 °C causes that the samples to exhibit phase dependent and upconversion luminescence behavior that depend upon the doping concentration as well as the annealing temperature. The inductively coupled optical emission spectroscopy reveals that only 1/600 times of the desired volume of the co-dopant goes to the lattice and it can manifest visible spectral changes in the diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples. The samples co-doped with Cr3+ ion concentrations of 10-15% and post-annealed at 600 °C were found to have maximum emission with an enhancement factor of 24 for the green region and 33 for the red region. In addition, the laser power dependent studies reveal that even for the power density levels 3.69 W cm-2 to 32.14 W cm-2, the samples are in the saturation regime and most of the samples investigated here follow a single photon process, and a few samples show a slope value less than 1 for laser power dependent intensity plots. The results show the remarkable promise of controlled tailoring of the properties of upconversion crystals via post annealing and co-doping.
