RESUMO
Within the intricate matrices of cognitive neuroscience, auditory deprivation acts as a catalyst, propelling a cascade of neuroanatomical adjustments that have, until now, been suboptimally articulated in extant literature. Addressing this gap, our study harnesses high-resolution 3â T MRI modalities to unveil the multifaceted cortical transformations that emerge in tandem with congenital auditory deficits. We conducted a rigorous cortical surface analysis on a cohort of 90 congenitally deaf individuals, systematically compared with 90 normoacoustic controls. Our sample encompassed both male and female participants, ensuring a gender-inclusive perspective in our analysis. Expected alterations within prototypical auditory domains were evident, but our findings transcended these regions, spotlighting modifications dispersed across a gamut of cortical and subcortical structures, thereby epitomizing the cerebral adaptive dynamics to sensory voids. Crucially, the study's innovative methodology integrated two pivotal variables: the duration of auditory deprivation and the extent of sign language immersion. By intersecting these metrics with structural changes, our analysis unveiled nuanced layers of cortical reconfigurations, elucidating a more granulated understanding of neural plasticity. This intersectional approach bestows a unique advantage, allowing for a discerning exploration into how varying durations of sensory experience and alternative communication modalities modulate the brain's morphological terrain. In encapsulating the synergy of neuroimaging finesse and incisive scientific rigor, this research not only broadens the current understanding of adaptive neural mechanisms but also paves the way for tailored therapeutic strategies, finely attuned to individual auditory histories and communicative repertoires.

Fabrication of codoped photocatalysts is a developing area of research. Herein, we explore the visible light photocatalytic properties of Cu, Zn codoped BiVO4 particles. Doping lower valent cations (Cu and Zn) makes the BiVO4 surface more acidic and enables us to target the basic crystal violet (CV) dye. The adopted hydrothermal protocol of synthesis results in the formation of Cu-Zn codoped monoclinic BiVO4 particles. Undoped monoclinic BiVO4, prepared by the same protocol, showed significant formation of oxygen vacancies. XPS analyses confirm the coexistence of Cu2+/Cu+ and Zn2+ dopants. Increased dopant percentage reduced oxygen vacancies. XRD indicates that Cu2+/Cu+ or Zn2+ dopants generally substitute Bi3+ in BiVO4. All photocatalysis activities for CV degradation are reported under near-neutral pH conditions. A typical codoped BiVO4 photocatalyst with 1% Zn and 2% Cu demonstrated the best CV degradation photocatalytic activity. The activity of this Zn, Cu codoped photocatalyst is better than that of pure, Zn-doped, and Cu-doped BiVO4 samples. Active species trapping experiments indicated the possible photocatalysis mechanism. The photocatalysts exhibited appropriate recyclability and photostability.
RESUMO
Low H2O2 utilization efficiency for hydroxyl radical generation, acidic pH, and recyclability are critical limitations of heterogeneous Fenton and photo-Fenton catalysts. The present research shows that the optimum Mo doping of FeS2 particles can largely alleviate these catalysis constraints. A solvothermal protocol was followed to prepare polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized FeS2 and Mo-doped FeS2 particles. XRD observations showed that Mo doping increases the lattice parameters of FeS2. The band gap of the Mo-doped FeS2 particles decreased to 1.58 eV from the 2.24 eV value exhibited by pure FeS2 particles. Structural and electronic structure DFT calculations support these results. The Fenton and photo-Fenton p-nitrophenol (PNP) degradation at neutral pH on PVP-stabilized Mo-doped FeS2 and FeS2 particles were examined. The photo-Fenton results were substantially better than under Fenton conditions. The best PNP degradation photo-Fenton turnover frequency (TOF) recorded was 254.50 µmol g-1 min-1 on the PVP stabilized 4% Mo-doped FeS2 sample. The Mo-doped FeS2 catalysts were stable under photo-Fenton recycling, and the H2O2 (1.66 mM) required for these reactions was significantly lower than most reports (30-6000 mM). Given the economic importance of the latter in Fenton/photo-Fenton reactions, H2O2 normalized turnover frequency (13.85 and 153.31 mg-1 min-1 L for Fenton and photo-Fenton) values were used to evaluate catalytic activities.

In this work, Ag nanoparticles decorated with NiFe2O4/CuWO4 heterostructure were synthesized using the step-wise precipitation method. The influence of varying Ag loading on the NiFe2O4/CuWO4 heterostructure and its electrochemical OER performance was extensively studied in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The obtained LSV profile was analyzed to determine the overpotential, Tafel slope, and onset potential. The heterostructure with an optimal Ag loading of 5 wt% required the least overpotential (1.60 V vs. RHE) for generating a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a lower Tafel slope of 44.5 mV dec-1, indicating its faster OER kinetics. Furthermore, the composite remained stable over a period of 24 hours with a minimum rise in the overpotential after the stability test. The enhanced OER performance of the as-prepared catalyst can be attributed to the presence of multiple metallic elements in the Ag-loaded NiFe2O4/CuWO4 composite, which created a diverse array of oxygen-vacant sites with varying reactivity, enhancing the charge-transfer kinetics; and thus contributing to the overall efficiency of OER. Therefore, optimizing the Ag concentration and engineering a microstructure represents an encouraging strategy for developing cost-effective catalysts for next-generation energy-conversion applications.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: This study explores the compensatory neural mechanisms associated with congenital deafness through an examination of tactile discrimination abilities using high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the neural substrates underlying tactile processing in congenitally deaf individuals and compare them with hearing controls. METHODS: Our participant pool included thirty-five congenitally deaf individuals and thirty-five hearing controls. All participants engaged in tactile discrimination tasks involving the identification of common objects by touch. We utilized an analytical suite comprising voxel-based statistics, functional connectivity multivariate/voxel pattern analysis (fc-MVPA), and seed-based connectivity analysis to examine neural activity. RESULTS: Our findings revealed pronounced neural activity in congenitally deaf participants within regions typically associated with auditory processing, including the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, and right rolandic operculum. Additionally, unique activation and connectivity patterns were observed in the right insula and bilateral supramarginal gyrus, indicating a strategic reorganization of neural pathways for tactile information processing. Behaviorally, both groups demonstrated high accuracy in the tactile tasks, exceeding 90%. However, the deaf participants outperformed their hearing counterparts in reaction times, showcasing significantly enhanced efficiency in tactile information processing. CONCLUSION: These insights into the brain's adaptability to sensory loss through compensatory neural reorganization highlight the intricate mechanisms by which tactile discrimination is enhanced in the absence of auditory input. Understanding these adaptations can help develop strategies to harness the brain's plasticity to improve sensory processing in individuals with sensory impairments, ultimately enhancing their quality of life through improved tactile perception and sensory integration.

Previous research suggests that literacy, specifically learning alphabetic letter-to-phoneme mappings, modifies online speech processing and enhances brain responses, as indexed by the BOLD, to speech in auditory areas associated with phonological processing (Dehaene et al., 2010). However, alphabets are not the only orthographic systems in use in the world, and hundreds of millions of individuals speak languages that are not written using alphabets. In order to make claims that literacy per se has broad and general consequences for brain responses to speech, one must seek confirmatory evidence from nonalphabetic literacy. To this end, we conducted a longitudinal fMRI study in India probing the effect of literacy in Devanagari, an abubgida, on functional connectivity and cerebral responses to speech in 91 variously literate Hindi-speaking male and female human participants. Twenty-two completely illiterate participants underwent 6 months of reading and writing training. Devanagari literacy increases functional connectivity between acoustic-phonetic and graphomotor brain areas, but we find no evidence that literacy changes brain responses to speech, either in cross-sectional or longitudinal analyses. These findings shows that a dramatic reconfiguration of the neurofunctional substrates of online speech processing may not be a universal result of learning to read, and suggest that the influence of writing on speech processing should also be investigated.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT It is widely claimed that a consequence of being able to read is enhanced auditory processing of speech, reflected by increased cortical responses in areas associated with phonological processing. Here we find no relationship between literacy and the magnitude of brain response to speech stimuli in individuals who speak Hindi, which is written using a nonalphabetic script, Devanagari, an abugida. We propose that the exact nature of the script under examination must be considered before making sweeping claims about the consequences of literacy for the brain. Further, we find evidence that literacy enhances functional connectivity between auditory processing areas and graphomotor areas, suggesting a mechanism whereby learning to write might influence speech perception.

Wheat, an important cereal crop globally, faces major challenges due to increasing global population and changing climates. The production and productivity are challenged by several biotic and abiotic stresses. There is also a pressing demand to enhance grain yield and quality/nutrition to ensure global food and nutritional security. To address these multifaceted concerns, researchers have conducted numerous meta-QTL (MQTL) studies in wheat, resulting in the identification of candidate genes that govern these complex quantitative traits. MQTL analysis has successfully unraveled the complex genetic architecture of polygenic quantitative traits in wheat. Candidate genes associated with stress adaptation have been pinpointed for abiotic and biotic traits, facilitating targeted breeding efforts to enhance stress tolerance. Furthermore, high-confidence candidate genes (CGs) and flanking markers to MQTLs will help in marker-assisted breeding programs aimed at enhancing stress tolerance, yield, quality and nutrition. Functional analysis of these CGs can enhance our understanding of intricate trait-related genetics. The discovery of orthologous MQTLs shared between wheat and other crops sheds light on common evolutionary pathways governing these traits. Breeders can leverage the most promising MQTLs and CGs associated with multiple traits to develop superior next-generation wheat cultivars with improved trait performance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of MQTL analysis in wheat, highlighting progress, challenges, validation methods and future opportunities in wheat genetics and breeding, contributing to global food security and sustainable agriculture.

A narrow band gap restricts photocatalytic applications of Ag2O nanoparticles, but appropriate doping can favorably modify this aspect. Given this, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted, revealing that substitutional sulfur doping of Ag2O could increase its bandgap and stabilize oxygen vacancies. A hydrothermal precipitation protocol was employed to prepare sulfur-doped (S-doped) Ag2O nanoparticles. The band gap of the prepared nanoparticles increased to 1.89 eV with 1.25-mole percent S-doping. XPS analysis of the samples also revealed that S-doping increased oxygen vacancies in the prepared Ag2O nanoparticles. Furthermore, S-doping caused a major shift in the valence band position to a negative value. These doped Ag2O nanoparticles showed an enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity towards rhodamine B (RhB) degradation.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: During the last few decades, the diverse sources of resistance, several genes and QTLs for spot blotch resistance have been identified. However, a large set of germplasm lines are still unexplored that have the potential to develop highly resistant wheat cultivars for the target environments. Therefore, the identification of new sources of resistance to spot blotch is essential for breeding programmes to develop spot blotch resistant cultivars and sustain wheat production. The association mapping panel of 294 diverse bread wheat accessions was used to explore new sources of spot blotch disease resistance and to identify genomic regions using genome wide association analysis (GWAS). The genotypes were tested in replicated trials for spot blotch disease at three major hot spots in India (Varanasi in UP, Pusa in Bihar, and Cooch Behar in West Bengal). The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated to assess the level of resistance in each genotype. RESULTS: A total of 19 highly and 76 moderately resistant lines were identified. Three accessions (EC664204, IC534306 and IC535188) were nearly immune to spot blotch disease. The genotyping of all accessions resulted in a total of 16,787 high-quality polymorphic SNPs. The GWAS was performed using a Compressed Mixed Linear Model (CMLM) and a Mixed Linear Model (MLM). A total of seven significant MTAs, common in both the models and consistent across the environment, were further validated to develop KASP markers. Four MTAs (AX-94710084, AX-94865722, AX-95135556, and AX-94529408) on three chromosomes (2AL, 2BL, and 3BL) have been successfully validated through the KASP marker. CONCLUSIONS: The new source of resistance was identified from unexplored germplasm lines. The genomic regions identified through GWAS were validated through KASP markers. The marker information and the highly resistant sources are valuable resources to rapidly develop immune or near immune wheat varieties.

KEY MESSAGE: Genomic selection is a promising tool to select for spot blotch resistance and index-based selection can simultaneously select for spot blotch resistance, heading and plant height. A major biotic stress challenging bread wheat production in regions characterized by humid and warm weather is spot blotch caused by the fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana. Since genomic selection (GS) is a promising selection tool, we evaluated its potential for spot blotch in seven breeding panels comprising 6736 advanced lines from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center. Our results indicated moderately high mean genomic prediction accuracies of 0.53 and 0.40 within and across breeding panels, respectively which were on average 177.6% and 60.4% higher than the mean accuracies from fixed effects models using selected spot blotch loci. Genomic prediction was also evaluated in full-sibs and half-sibs panels and sibs were predicted with the highest mean accuracy (0.63) from a composite training population with random full-sibs and half-sibs. The mean accuracies when full-sibs were predicted from other full-sibs within families and when full-sibs panels were predicted from other half-sibs panels were 0.47 and 0.44, respectively. Comparison of GS with phenotypic selection (PS) of the top 10% of resistant lines suggested that GS could be an ideal tool to discard susceptible lines, as greater than 90% of the susceptible lines discarded by PS were also discarded by GS. We have also reported the evaluation of selection indices to simultaneously select non-late and non-tall genotypes with low spot blotch phenotypic values and genomic-estimated breeding values. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of integrating GS and index-based selection for improving spot blotch resistance in bread wheat.

A loss of hearing in early life leads to diversifications of important white matter networks. Previous studies related to WM alterations in adult deaf individuals mainly involved univariate analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) data and volumetric analysis, which yielded inconsistent results. To address this issue, we investigated the FA value alterations in 38 prelingual adult deaf individuals and compared the results with those obtained from the same number of adults with normal hearing by using univariate (tract-based spatial statistics) and multivariate (source-based morphometry) methods. The findings from tract-based spatial statistics suggested an increased FA value in regions such as the left cingulate gyrus, left inferior frontal occipital fasciculus, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus and superior corona radiata; however, the results indicated a decreased FA value in the left planum temporale of adult deaf individuals. While source-based morphometry analysis outlined higher FA values in regions such as bilateral lingual gyrus, bilateral cerebellum, bilateral putamen and bilateral caudate, a considerable decrease was observed in the bilateral superior temporal region of the deaf group. These alterations in multiple neural regions might be linked to the compensatory cross-modal reorganizations attributed to early hearing loss.

Innovative applications based on two-dimensional solids require cost-effective fabrication processes resulting in large areas of high quality materials. Chemical vapour deposition is among the most promising methods to fulfill these requirements. However, for 2D materials prepared in this way it is generally assumed that they are of inferior quality in comparison to the exfoliated 2D materials commonly used in basic research. In this work we challenge this assumption and aim to quantify the differences in quality for the prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide MoS2. To this end single layers of MoS2 prepared by different techniques (exfoliation, grown by different chemical vapour deposition methods, transfer techniques and as vertical heterostructure with graphene) are studied by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, complemented by atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate that as-prepared MoS2, directly grown on SiO2, differs from exfoliated MoS2 in terms of higher photoluminescence, lower electron concentration and increased strain. As soon as a water film is intercalated (e.g. by transfer) underneath the grown MoS2, in particular the (opto)electronic properties become practically identical to those of exfoliated MoS2. A comparison of the two most common precursors shows that the growth with MoO3 causes greater strain and/or defect density deviations than growth with ammonium heptamolybdate. As part of a heterostructure directly grown MoS2 interacts much stronger with the substrate and in this case an intercalated water film does not lead to the complete decoupling, which is typical for exfoliation or transfer. Our work shows that the supposedly poorer quality of grown 2D transition metal dichalcogenides is indeed a misconception.
RESUMO
Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is a specialist pest on cruciferous crops of economic importance. The large-scale use of chemical insecticides for the control of this insect pest has caused a number of challenges to agro-ecosystems. With the advent of the omics era, genetic pest management strategies are becoming increasingly feasible and show a powerful potential for pest control. Here, we review strategies for using transgenic plants and sterile insect techniques for genetic pest management and introduce the major advances in the control of P. xylostella using a female-specific RIDL (release of insects carrying a dominant lethal gene) strategy. Further, the advantages of gene drive developed in combination with sex determination and CRISPR/Cas9 systems are addressed, and the corresponding prospects and implementation issues are discussed. It is predictable that under the policy and regulation of professional committees, the genetic pest control strategy, especially for gene drive, will open a new avenue to sustainable pest management not only for P. xylostella but also for other insect pests.

A wheat association mapping population consisting of 287 diverse spring wheat lines were evaluated for three years in one location (Varanasi) and out of these for one year across three locations (Karnal, Dharwad and Varanasi) in India. Straw fodder quality traits analyzed were nitrogen (N) content, neutral (NDF) and acid (ADF) detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin (ADL), ash (ASH), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and metabolizable energy (ME) content. Grain yield (GY) and straw yield (SY) were also recorded. Highly significant (Pâ¯<â¯0.0001) differences among lines were observed for all traits except for ADF and ADL in the three years trials conducted at Varanasi. However, year and location had strong (Pâ¯<â¯0.0001) effects on all traits. Compared to line-dependent variations in GY and SY variation in straw fodder quality traits were small. Proportionally greatest variations between lines were observed for straw N where lowest and highest N varied by about 30%. Difference for NDF and ADF between lines were at most 4% units and below 3% units for IVOMD. Grain yield and straw yield were positively correlated (Pâ¯<â¯0.0001) with GY accounting for 26% of the variation in SY. Straw N, IVOMD and ME were weakly but significantly (Pâ¯<â¯0.05) negatively associated with GY and SY. Straw NDF and ADF were significantly (Pâ¯<â¯0.05) positively correlated with GY but the association was again weak. Straw NDF, ADF and ADL were also weakly but significantly positively correlated with SY. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were applied to detect significant marker- straw fodder quality trait associations. Five genomic regions contributed for six traits (ADF, ADL, ASH, IVOMD, ME and NDF). ADF and ADL mapped in the common QTL region on chromosome 2B. Similarly, for the IVOMD and ME QTLs on chromosome 5B were associated with SNP marker, wsnp_Ku_c35090_44349517. While some associations were detected for ADF, ALD, ASH, IVOMD, ME and NDF on chromosomes 1A, 2B, 3A, 5A and 5B, the phenotypic variation explained was low to medium by individual QTL. A likely contributing factor was the comparatively small difference in straw fodder quality traits among the lines. It is interesting to note that line dependent variations in GY and SY were about two-fold. In other words, strong genotypic variations of GY and SY do exist. The lack of any similar variations in straw fodder quality traits is intriguing and requires further research.
RESUMO
Spot blotch (SB) is an important fungal disease of wheat in South Asia and South America. Host resistance is regarded as an economical and environmentally friendly approach of controlling SB, and the inheritance of resistance is mostly quantitative. In order to gain a better understanding on the SB resistance mechanism in CIMMYT germplasm, two bi-parental mapping populations were generated, both comprising 232 F2:7 progenies. Elite CIMMYT breeding lines, BARTAI and WUYA, were used as resistant parents, whereas CIANO T79 was used as susceptible parent in both populations. The two populations were evaluated for field SB resistance at CIMMYT's Agua Fria station for three consecutive years, from the 2012â»2013 to 2014â»2015 cropping seasons. Phenological traits like plant height (PH) and days to heading (DH) were also determined. Genotyping was performed using the DArTSeq genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) platform, and a few D-genome specific SNPs and those for phenological traits were integrated for analysis. The most prominent quantitative trait locus (QTL) in both populations was found on chromosome 5AL at the Vrn-A1 locus, explaining phenotypic variations of 7â»27%. Minor QTL were found on chromosomes 1B, 3A, 3B, 4B, 4D, 5B and 6D in BARTAI and on chromosomes 1B, 2A, 2D and 4B in WUYA, whereas minor QTL contributed by CIANO T79 were identified on chromosome 1B, 1D, 3A, 4B and 7A. In summary, resistance to SB in the two mapping populations was controlled by multiple minor QTL, with strong influence from Vrn-A1.

AIM: Periodontitis, a chronic infectious disease, affects most of the population at one time or the other and its expression is a combination of hosts, microbial agents, and environmental factors. Extensive literature exists for the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Only a few studies performed in a limited number of patients have reported peri-odontal health status in chronic renal failure patients. Hence, the aim of the present study is to assess and compare the periodontal status of patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis, predialysis with systemically healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 90 patients were divided into three groups. Group I: 30 renal dialysis patients. Group II: 30 predialysis patients. Control group comprised 30 systemically healthy patients who formed group III. Periodontal examination was carried out using oral hygiene index-simplified (OHI-S), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth, and clinical attachment loss. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that the periodontal status of patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis (dialysis group) and patients with chronic renal failure not undergoing renal dialysis (predialysis) when compared with systemically healthy subjects showed significantly higher mean scores of OHI-S, PI, and clinical attachment loss. CONCLUSION: Thus, patients with chronic renal failure showed poor oral hygiene and higher prevalence of periodontal disease. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The dental community's awareness of implications of poor health within chronic renal failure patients should be elevated.

Our perception about the representation and processing of concrete and abstract concepts is based on the fact that concrete words are highly imagined and remembered faster than abstract words. In order to explain the processing differences between abstract and concrete concepts, various theories have been proposed, yet there is no unanimous consensus about its neural implication. The present study investigated the processing of concrete and abstract words during an orthography judgment task (implicit semantic processing) using functional magnetic resonance imaging to validate the involvement of the neural regions. Relative to non-words, both abstract and concrete words show activation in the regions of bilateral hemisphere previously associated with semantic processing. The common areas (conjunction analyses) observed for abstract and concrete words are bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (BA 44/45), left superior parietal (BA 7), left fusiform gyrus and bilateral middle occipital. The additional areas for abstract words were noticed in bilateral superior temporal and bilateral middle temporal region, whereas no distinct region was noticed for concrete words. This suggests that words with abstract concepts recruit additional language regions in the brain.

The sound "OM" is believed to bring mental peace and calm. The cortical activation associated with listening to sound "OM" in contrast to similar non-meaningful sound (TOM) and listening to a meaningful Hindi word (AAM) has been investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The behaviour interleaved gradient technique was employed in order to avoid interference of scanner noise. The results reveal that listening to "OM" sound in contrast to the meaningful Hindi word condition activates areas of bilateral cerebellum, left middle frontal gyrus (dorsolateral middle frontal/BA 9), right precuneus (BA 5) and right supramarginal gyrus (SMG). Listening to "OM" sound in contrast to "non-meaningful" sound condition leads to cortical activation in bilateral middle frontal (BA9), right middle temporal (BA37), right angular gyrus (BA 40), right SMG and right superior middle frontal gyrus (BA 8). The conjunction analysis reveals that the common neural regions activated in listening to "OM" sound during both conditions are middle frontal (left dorsolateral middle frontal cortex) and right SMG. The results correspond to the fact that listening to "OM" sound recruits neural systems implicated in emotional empathy.

Deafness, as a profound manifestation of sensory deprivation, prompts a cascade of intricate cerebral adaptations. In this study, involving 35 deaf individuals and 35 hearing controls, we utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to delve into the depths of functional connectivity nuances distinguishing deaf individuals from their hearing counterparts. Leading our analytical approach was the application of multi-voxel pattern analysis (fc-MVPA). This advanced method provided a refined perspective, revealing amplified neural connectivity within the deaf population. Notably, regions such as the left postcentral somatosensory association cortex, the anterior and posterior corridors of the left superior temporal gyrus (STG), and the left mid-temporal lobe were identified as hotspots of heightened connectivity. Further, fc-MVPA shed light on intricate interaction effects, which became more pronounced when examining variables such as the duration of auditory deprivation and the extent of sign language exposure. These interactions were particularly evident in the premotor and left frontal mid-orbital regions. Complementing this, seed-based connectivity assessments illuminated pronounced coupling dynamics within the left STG spectrum. Concurrently, local correlation (LCOR) value analysis in the deaf group revealed significant shifts in the right superior STG and bilateral precuneus. In addition, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) evaluations indicated modulations in the bilateral mid cingulum and left superior mid frontal gyrus. This comprehensive, fc-MVPA-driven exploration uncovers the multifaceted functional adaptations resulting from deafness, highlighting the profound plasticity of the human brain and its potential implications for targeted rehabilitative strategies.

A wide solar light absorption window and its utilization, long-term stability, and improved interfacial charge transfer are the keys to scalable and superior solar photocatalytic performance. Based on this objective, a noble metal-free composite photocatalyst is developed with conducting MXene (Ti3C2) and semiconducting cauliflower-shaped CdS and porous Cu2O. XPS, HRTEM, and ESR analyses of TiOy@Ti3C2 confirm the formation of enough defect-enriched TiOy (where y is < 2) on the surface of Ti3C2 during hydrothermal treatment, thus creating a third semiconducting site with enough oxygen vacancy. The final material, TiOy@Ti3C2/CdS/Cu2O, shows a broad absorption window from 300 to 2000 nm, covering the visible to near-infrared (NIR) range of the solar spectrum. Photocatalytic H2 generation activity is found to be 12.23 and 16.26 mmol g-1 h-1 in the binary (TiOy@Ti3C2/CdS) and tertiary composite (TiOy@Ti3C2/CdS/Cu2O), respectively, with good repeatability under visible-NIR light using lactic acid as the hole scavenger. A clear increase of efficiency by 1.53 mmol g-1 h-1 in the tertiary composite due to NIR light absorption supports the intrinsic upconversion of electrons, which will open a new prospective of solar light utilization. Decreased charge-transfer resistance from the EIS plot and a decrease in PL intensity established the improved interfacial charge separation in the tertiary composite. Compared to pure CdS, H2 generation efficiency is 29.6 times higher on the noble metal-free tertiary composite with an apparent quantum efficiency of 12.34%. Synergistic effect of defect-enriched TiOy formation, creation of proper dual p-n junction on a Ti3C2 sheet as supported by the Mott-Schottky plot, significant NIR light absorption, increased electron mobility, and charge transfer on the conductive Ti3C2 layer facilitate the drastically increased hydrogen evolution rate even after several cycles of repetition. Expectantly, the 2D MXene-based heterostructure with defect-enriched dual p-n junctions of desired interface engineering will facilitate scalable photocatalytic water splitting over a broad range of the solar spectrum.
