RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The arthroscopic biceps rerouting (BR) technique was introduced as a novel technique for large-to-massive rotator cuff tears (LMRCTs). This method can restore shoulder stability, and its biomechanical effect was verified in a cadaver experiment. Recent reports have shown favorable clinical outcomes. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of partial repair with those of the BR technique in LMRCTs. Materials and Methods: We included 72 patients who had undergone LMRCTs. Arthroscopic partial repair was performed in 31 patients (group I), while repair with the BR technique was performed in 41 patients (group II). Functional and imaging outcomes were evaluated and compared using a visual analog scale for pain, range of motion (ROM), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Constant score, and Korean Shoulder Score (KSS) before the surgery and at 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery and at the last follow-up. Tendon integrity was investigated using magnetic resonance in all the patients at 12 months postoperative. Results: The mean follow-up period was 22.11 ± 10.47 months (range, 12-53 months). Forward flexion (p = 0.02) and external rotation at the side (p = 0.04) were significantly higher in group II than in group I on postoperative day (POD) 12 months. For internal rotation, group II showed significant improvement compared to group I on POD 3 months (p = 0.002) and at 6 months postoperative (p = 0.01). On POD 12 months, the ASES (p = 0.047) and KSS (p = 0.048) were better in group II. Significant improvements in pain and clinical scores were observed in both groups at the last follow-up. However, the two groups had no significant differences in pain, clinical scores, or ROM at the last follow-up. Retear of the repaired tendon was observed in nine patients in group I (29.03%) and eight in group II (19.51%, p = 0.35). Conclusions: Partial repair and repair using the BR technique effectively improved clinical and radiologic outcomes. The BR technique revealed early recovery of ROM and better clinical results than partial repair at one year postoperative. This could be a useful method in treating LMRCTs.

RESUMO

For the fabrication of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) using a solution process, it is essential to understand the characteristics of the perovskite precursor solution to achieve high performance and reproducibility. The colloids (iodoplumbates) in the perovskite precursors under various conditions were investigated by UV-visible absorption, dynamic light scattering, photoluminescence, and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy techniques. Their local structure was examined by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure studies. Perovskite thin films on a substrate with precursor solutions were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, space-charge-limited current, and Kelvin probe force microscopy. The colloidal properties of the perovskite precursor solutions were found to be directly correlated with the defect concentration and crystallinity of the perovskite film. This work provides guidelines for controlling perovskite films by varying the precursor solution, making it possible to use colloid-engineered lead halide perovskite layers to fabricate efficient PSCs.

RESUMO

Transcription factor Foxp3 is critical for generating regulatory T cells (T(reg) cells). Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) induces Foxp3 and suppressive T(reg) cells from naive T cells, whereas interleukin 6 (IL-6) inhibits the generation of inducible T(reg) cells. Here we show that IL-4 blocked the generation of TGF-beta-induced Foxp3(+) T(reg) cells and instead induced a population of T helper cells that produced IL-9 and IL-10. The IL-9(+)IL-10(+) T cells demonstrated no regulatory properties despite producing abundant IL-10. Adoptive transfer of IL-9(+)IL-10(+) T cells into recombination-activating gene 1-deficient mice induced colitis and peripheral neuritis, the severity of which was aggravated if the IL-9(+)IL-10(+) T cells were transferred with CD45RB(hi) CD4(+) effector T cells. Thus IL-9(+)IL-10(+) T cells lack suppressive function and constitute a distinct population of helper-effector T cells that promote tissue inflammation.

RESUMO

Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a radiofrequency ablation system with a novel endometrial tip (RFA-EMT) for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) or abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB).Methods: This is a prospective study including a total of 38 premenopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) or abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) that failed to respond to medical therapy. Hysteroscopic evaluation and curettage biopsy were performed just before the procedure. The procedure was timed to occur during the early proliferative phase (cycle days 4-10). RFA-EMT procedures were performed by a single surgeon with the patient under general anesthesia with a laryngeal mask airway. Primary outcome was reduction in bleeding, reported as amenorrhea, hypomenorrhea, and eumenorrhea, which were measured via hemoglobin level and pictorial blood assessment chart (PBAC) score. Secondary outcomes were adverse events, dysmenorrhea with numeric rating scale (NRS) score, and endometrial thickening in the early proliferative phase, as assessed by transvaginal ultrasonography. Results: There were no peri- or post-procedural complications. Combined amenorrhea, hypomenorrhea, and eumenorrhea rates at 3 and 6 months were 97.4% and 100%, respectively. The hemoglobin level was significantly increased, and the PBAC score, NRS score, and endometrial thickening were significantly decreased after 3 months. These trends were maintained for 6 months after the procedure. Conclusion: RFA-EMT, a new technique, is safe and effective for women with HMB or AUB for which medical therapy has failed.

RESUMO

The use of divalent chalcogenides and monovalent halides as anions in a perovskite structure allows the introduction of 3+ and 4+ charged cations in the place of the 2+ metal cations. Herein we report for the first time on the fabrication of solar cells exploiting methylammonium antimony sulfur diiodide (MASbSI2) perovskite structures, as light harvesters. The MASbSI2 was prepared by annealing under mild temperature conditions, via a sequential reaction between antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3), which is deposited by the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method, antimony triiodide (SbI3), and methylammonium iodide (MAI) onto a mesoporous TiO2 electrode, and then annealed at 150 °C in an argon atmosphere. The solar cells fabricated using MASbSI2 exhibited power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 3.08%, under the standard illumination conditions of 100 mW/cm2.

RESUMO

Although squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common nonmelanoma skin cancer, clinicians have difficulty diagnosing SCC of the toe because its clinical features can mimic other less serious diseases. Clinicians are especially prone to misdiagnose SCC of the toe as diabetic foot ulcer in patients with diabetes mellitus because of the clinical similarity of the 2 ailments. SCC of the toe is generally considered to have a low risk of metastasis. Locoregional or distant metastases without bone or tendon involvement are particularly rare. The authors report here an interesting case of rapidly spreading SCC of the toe with metastasis to multiple lymph nodes and cancer-related lymphedema. Physicians should be aware of the possibility of malignancy when they encounter chronic and recalcitrant ulcerative lesions of the digits.

RESUMO

As demand for a youthful appearance has increased, various techniques for face lifting and contouring have been used to reduce excess fat deposition and improve skin laxity. Recently, radiofrequency (RF)-assisted lipolysis and liposuction (RFAL) has been introduced for body and face contouring. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical improvement and safety of a new RFAL device for face lifting and contouring. A prospective study was conducted in 20 Korean patients who underwent an internal real-time thermosensing monopolar RFAL procedure. Prior to treatment and 12 and 24 weeks after treatment, digital photographs were taken, and the degree of improvement as measured by investigators and patients was recorded. Skin elasticity was measured using a Cutometer (CT575, Courage and Khazaka®, Cologne, Germany). Safety profiles were also evaluated at each visit. Results showed favorable improvement in skin laxity and fat deposition. Both investigators' evaluations and patients' evaluation showed significant improvement between 12 and 24 weeks. Although the changes in skin elasticity measured by the Cutometer were not statistically significant, all three treated regions showed a trend toward improvement. No major side effects such as infection or burn were observed. The internal, real-time thermosensing monopolar RFAL device showed clinical efficacy and safety. After further studies with more patients and longer follow-up periods, internal real-time thermosensing monopolar RF devices might become one of the popular treatment options for face lifting and contouring.

RESUMO

To evaluate the prevalence and genetic diversity of porcine sapeloviruses (PSVs) in Korea, a total of 100 diarrhea fecal samples from pigs were analyzed by RT-PCR and nested PCR assays with primer pairs specific for the VP1 gene. Overall, 34 % of the diarrhea samples tested positive for PSV, and a high proportion of infections occurred along with a variety of other enteric viruses and bacteria. Genomic and phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 genes revealed pronounced genetic diversities between PSVs from Korean and elsewhere. Our results indicate that PSV infections are very common in Korean pigs with diarrhea. The infecting strains are genetically diverse.

RESUMO

Direct interspecies transmissions of group A rotaviruses (RVA) have been reported under natural conditions. However, the pathogenicity of RVA has never been directly compared in homologous and heterologous hosts. The bovine RVA/Cow-tc/KOR/K5/2004/G5P[7] strain, which was shown to possess a typical porcine-like genotype constellation similar to that of the G5P[7] prototype RVA/Pig-tc/USA/OSU/1977/G5P9[7] strain, was examined for its pathogenicity and compared with the porcine G5P[7] RVA/Pig-tc/KOR/K71/2006/G5P[7] strain possessing the same genotype constellation. The bovine K5 strain induced diarrhea and histopathological changes in the small intestine of piglets and calves, whereas the porcine K71 strain caused diarrhea and histopathological changes in the small intestine of piglets, but not in calves. Furthermore, the bovine K5 strain showed extra-intestinal tropisms in both piglets and calves, whereas the porcine K71 strain had extra-intestinal tropisms in piglets, but not in calves. Therefore, we performed comparative genomic analysis of the K71 and K5 RVA strains to determine whether specific mutations could be associated with these distinct clinical and pathological phenotypes. Full-length sequencing analyses for the 11 genomic segments for K71 and K5 revealed that these strains were genetically nearly identical to each other. Two nucleotide mutations were found in the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of NSP5 and the 3' UTR of NSP3, and eight amino acid mutations in VP1-VP4 and NSP2. Some of these mutations may be critical molecular determinants for RVA virulence and/or pathogenicity.

RESUMO

Pax5/B cell lineage specific activator protein (BSAP) is a B lineage-specific regulator that controls the B lineage-specific gene expression program and immunoglobulin gene V(H) to DJ(H) recombination. Despite extensive studies on its multiple functions, little is known about how the activity of Pax5 is regulated. Here, we show that co-expression of histone acetyltransferase E1A binding protein p300 dramatically enhances Pax5-mediated transcriptional activation. The p300-mediated enhancement is dependent on its intrinsic histone acetyltransferase activity. Moreover, p300 interacts with the C terminus of Pax5 and acetylates multiple lysine residues within the paired box DNA binding domain of Pax5. Mutations of lysine residues 67 and 87/89 to alanine within Pax5 abolish p300-mediated enhancement of Pax5-induced Luc-CD19 reporter expression in HEK293 cells and prevent Pax5 to activate endogenous Cd19 and Blnk expression in Pax5(-/-) murine pro B cells. These results uncover a novel level of regulation of Pax5 function by p300-mediated acetylation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cancer survivors are gradually increasing, however, they suffer from various difficulties. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of cancer survivors and the effects of the services of the Korean Cancer Survivorship Center Pilot Project launched by the South Korean government on distress. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study was performed on cancer survivors who completed primary treatment. Cancer survivors' distress and symptoms such as fatigue, pain, depressive mood, anxiety, and insomnia were evaluated by well-trained nurses. Regarding their needs, medical and psychosocial support services were provided. RESULTS: This study included 1,921 cancer survivors, with a mean age of 57.3 years (68.7% females). Breast cancer was most common, followed by stomach and colorectal cancer. Psychosocial and medical support decreased the percentage of the high-distress group from 50.9 to 30.5% and decreased the percentage of cancer survivors with high scores in fatigue, pain, anxiety, depressive mood, and insomnia. The independent predictors of a low distress level after the use of the services were older age, the relief of fatigue, pain, and insomnia. CONCLUSION: This study showed that psychosocial and medical support is associated with the lower distress and physical and mental symptoms of cancer survivors. Psychosocial and medical support could contribute to distress relief in cancer survivors. Further management strategies for fatigue, pain and insomnia are required.

RESUMO

We evaluated the novel gamma-lactam-based analogue, KBH-A145, for its anticancer activities. KBH-A145 markedly inhibited histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity in vitro and in vivo to an extent comparable to suberoyl-anilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA). The proliferation of various types of cancers was significantly suppressed by KBH-A145, among which MDA-MB-231 and MCF, human breast cancer cells and ACHN human renal cancer cells, were most sensitive. This was accompanied by induction of p21(WAF1/Cip1) through compromised recruitment of HDAC1, which leads to hyperacetylation of its promoter region and thus arrested both cells in the G(2)/M phase. Interestingly, this compound induced apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 cells, but not ACHN cells, through cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Taken together, these results show that this novel gamma-lactam-based HDAC inhibitor potently inhibits the growth of human breast and renal cancer cells. Thus KBH-A145 is a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of these types of cancer.

RESUMO

Significant research efforts are currently being devoted to improving both the crystalline quality and stability of lead halide perovskite absorbers to advance the commercial prospects of perovskite-based solar cells. Herein, we report a simple one-step dibutylhydroxytoluene (BHT) additive-based approach for simultaneously improving the crystallinity and resistance of perovskite films under adverse degradation conditions. We found that BHT, commonly known for its antioxidant properties, can considerably improve the performance of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells by modulating the chemical environment within the precursor medium to form intermediate complexes, and it can also suppress photooxidation, which results in perovskite degradation under environmental operating conditions. Consequently, a device exhibited a significant power conversion efficiency improvement to 18.1% with the BHT-additive-based perovskite absorber, exceeding the 17.1% efficiency achieved for the control device. The BHT additive also improved the perovskite stability by quenching intermediate reactions resulting in perovskite degradation to an undesirable lead iodide phase, as evidenced by detailed analysis of absorption spectra, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and photoluminescence measurements.

RESUMO

The aim of the study is to investigate how the participation of vigorous physical activities in the health examination contributes to blood lipid and blood glucose. A total of 56,810 workers from the Ulsan University Hospital in Ulsan, Subjects were tested for health checkups from February to November in 2016. The subject is those who does not have medical history, current ailments, and medication histories, and selected those who conducted the study of subjects tested to research. And this study did not consider their drinking and smoking. The final selected population was 11,557 and categorized as a vigorous physical activity of the health survey items. In this study, the group participated by the vigorous physical activity activities, group 1 (n= 70) had more than 6 days of vigorous physical activity, group 2 (n= 2,960) is 3 to 5 days of vigorous physical activity, the group 3 (n= 7,389) is 1 to 2 days of vigorous physical activity. The group 4 (n= 1,138) were classified as those who did not perform vigorous physical activity. To achieve the purpose of the study, the questionnaire examined blood lipid and blood glucose, using questions related to physical activity related to health examination in the Ulsan University Hospital. We obtained the mean and standard deviation for each group and conducted the one-way analysis of variance as an independent variable. Post hoc is least significant difference test and significant level is 0.05. Vigorous physical activity more than 3 days of participation had a positive affect high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride. But participation in vigorous physical activity did not affect blood glucose.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The criteria for defining sarcopenia vary among studies and confusion has arisen when defining the cutoff value. As a result, the prevalence of sarcopenia differs markedly depending on the definition. This study used the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) definition to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia among Korean women. METHODS: This study was based on data obtained from the 2008 to 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys IV and V. We used the AWGS recommended cutoff value of 5.4 kg/m(2) to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in Korean women. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of sarcopenia using a cutoff value of 5.4 kg/m(2) were 385 (19.5%) in women in their 50s, 286 (16.6%) in women in their 60s, 293 (23.7%) in women in their 70s, and 91 (30.8%) in women ≥80 years. The prevalence rates of sarcopenia were 307 (19.0%) in women 65 to 74 years, 194 (27.4%) in women 75 to 84 years, and 32 (40.5%) in women ≥85 years. The overall prevalence among women >50 years was 20.2%. The prevalence of sarcopenia in women >65 years was 22.1%. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of sarcopenia among Korean women was within the range of values of previous research about sarcopenia. Furthermore, using 5.4 kg/m(2) as the cutoff value was useful to compare various studies about sarcopenia in Koreans.

RESUMO

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm commonly originating from the minor salivary glands. The clinical findings typical of this tumor include slow growth, perineural invasion and high frequency of local recurrence. In this study, a patient presented with a tongue base lesion that was treated with surgical excision and additional postoperative external beam radiotherapy. However, local recurrence occurred 8 months after radiotherapy. If recurrence occurs after radiation therapy, total glossectomy should be considered. However, the patient refused re-operation and, considering the patient's age, brachytherapy was used to ensure organ preservation. Complete remission was achieved following brachytherapy, without serious side effects. There has been no progression of the lesion during a follow-up period of 2 years.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) tends to be refractory to conventional therapy. Previous clinical trials have found that a 24-week treatment course of oral alitretinoin is effective and well tolerated for CHE treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of oral alitretinoin in Korean CHE patients. METHODS: A total of 27 patients with moderate to severe CHE took 30 mg of alitretinoin daily for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy parameter was the physician's global assessment (PGA). The response was defined as a patient being "clear" or "almost clear" of disease. The secondary efficacy parameters were the modified total lesion symptom score (mTLSS) and the patients' global assessment (PaGA). All adverse events and laboratory abnormalities were recorded during the treatment period. RESULTS: Alitretinoin led to CHE symptom improvement in 44.4% of patients. The PGA, mTLSS, and PaGA scores correlated well with each other. Reported adverse events were typical retinoid class effects and headache was the most common. CONCLUSION: Taking 30 mg of oral alitretinoin daily for 12 weeks was found to be effective in treating Korean patients with CHE, compared with the 24 week-treatment shown in previous studies.

RESUMO

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, relapsing cutaneous disease with 4 distinctive clinical manifestations: ulcerative, bullous, pustular, and vegetative lesions. It mainly occurs in adults and is frequently associated with systemic diseases, most commonly inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatologic disease, or hematological dyscrasias. However, there have been no previous reports of PG in a patient with hereditary spherocytosis, a common inherited hemolytic anemia. We report here a unique case of PG in a 15-year-old boy with underlying hereditary spherocytosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is considering important disease entity in elderly. Several study groups define the sum of the muscle masses of the four limbs as appendicular skeletal mass (ASM) to calculate skeletal muscle index (SMI). The purpose of this study was to determine cut point of SMI for sarcopenia in Korean women. METHODS: This study was based on data obtained from the 2008 to 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV and V. A whole body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scan were performed on individuals of ≥10 years old from July 2008 to May 2011. In the analysis, 11,633 women were included. ASM was calculated and SMI was obtained as ASM/height(2). Cutoff value was defined two standard deviations below mean values for young reference group. RESULTS: Of 11,633 women aged 10 to 97 years, mean and standard deviation of year was 46.73±18.54 years. The highest level of height was noted in 20's and the highest total sum of skeletal mass was seen 14.87 kg in 40's. The highest value of SMI was noted in 60's in Korean women. Cutoff value as mean value of young women was decided with SMI of 30's and 40's that have peak ASM. Mean and standard deviation of SMI in those ages was 5.9±0.7 kg/m(2). A SMI of two standard deviations below the mean SMI of reference groups was 4.4 kg/m(2) as cutoff value. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that 4.4 kg/m(2) of SMI in Korean women was cutoff value of sarcopenia. Further study is clearly required to decide cutoff value of SMI for sarcopenia, especially for Korean women.

RESUMO

The mitogen-stimulated serine/threonine kinase p70S6k plays an important role in the progression of cells from G0/G1 to S phase of the cell cycle by translational up-regulation of a family of mRNA transcripts family of mRNA transcripts which contain polypyrimidine tract at their 5 transcriptional start site. Here, we report that p70S6k was constitutively phosphorylated and activated to various degrees in serum-deprived AGS, A2058, HT-1376, MG63, MCF7, MDA-MB-435S, MDA-MB-231 and MB-157. Rapamycin treatment induced a significant dephosphorylation and inactivation of p70S6k in all cancer cell lines, while wortmannin, a specific inhibitor of PI3-K, caused a mild dephosphorylation of p70S6k in AGS, MDA-MB-435S and MB-157. In addition, SQ20006, methylxanthine phosphodiesterase inhibitor, reduced the phosphorylation of p70S6k in all cancer cells tested. Consistent with inhibitory effect of rapamycin on p70S6k activity, rapamycin inhibited [3H]-thymidine incorporation and increased the number of cells at G0/G1 phase. Furthermore, these inhibitory effects were accompanied by the decrease in growth of cancer cells. Taken together, the results indicate that the antiproliferative activity of rapamycin might be attributed to cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase in human cancer cells through the inhibition of constitutively activated p70S6k of cancer cells and suggest p70S6k as a potential target for therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing or inhibiting tumor growth.
