BACKGROUND: Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) such as spirometry and blood gas analysis have been claimed to improve preoperative pulmonary risk assessment, but the scientific literature is conflicting. The Preoperative Diagnostic Tests for Pulmonary Risk Assessment in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (PREDICT) study aimed to determine whether preoperative PFTs improve the prediction of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients with known or suspected chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) undergoing major surgery. A secondary aim was to determine whether the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases (GOLD) classification of airflow limitation severity (grades I-IV) is associated with PPC. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center study, patients with GOLD key indicators for COPD scheduled for major surgery received PFTs. Patients with confirmed COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]/forced vital capacity [FVC] ≤0.7) were included in the COPD cohort and compared with a reference cohort without COPD. We developed 3 multivariable risk prediction models and compared their ability to predict PPC: the "standard model" (medical preconditions, and sociodemographic and surgical data), the "COPD assessment model" (additional GOLD key indicators, pack-years, and poor exercise capacity), and the "PFT model" (additional PFT parameters selected by adaptive least absolute shrinkage and selection operator [LASSO] regression). Multiple LASSO regressions were used for cross-validation. RESULTS: A total of 31,714 patients were assessed for eligibility; 1271 individuals received PFTs. Three hundred twenty patients (240 with confirmed COPD: 78 GOLD I, 125 GOLD II, 28 GOLD III, 9 GOLD IV, and 80 without COPD) completed follow-up. The diagnostic performance was similar among the standard model (cross-validated area under the curve [cvAUC], 0.723; bias-corrected bootstrapped [bc-b] 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.663-0.775), COPD assessment model (cvAUC, 0.724; bc-b 95% CI, 0.662-0.777), and PFT model (cvAUC, 0.729; bc-b 95% CI, 0.668-0.782). Previously known COPD was an independent predictor in the standard and COPD assessment model. %FEV1 PRED was the only PFT parameter selected by LASSO regression and was an independent predictor in the PFT model (adjusted odds ratios [OR], 0.98; 95% CI, 0.967-.0.998; P = .030). The risk for PPC significantly increased with GOLD grades ( P < .001). COPD was newly diagnosed in 53.8% of the patients with confirmed COPD; however, these individuals were not at increased risk for PPC ( P = .338). CONCLUSIONS: COPD is underdiagnosed in surgical patients. Patients with newly diagnosed COPD commonly presented with low GOLD severity grades and were not at higher risk for PPC. Neither a structured COPD-specific assessment nor preoperative PFTs added incremental diagnostic value to the standard clinical preassessment in patients with known or suspected COPD. Unnecessary postponement of surgery and undue health care costs can be avoided.

BACKGROUND: Gravity-dependent positioning therapy is an established concept in the treatment of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and improves oxygenation in spontaneously breathing patients with hypoxemic acute respiratory failure. In patients with coronavirus disease 2019, this therapy seems to be less effective. Electrical impedance tomography as a point-of-care functional imaging modality for visualizing regional ventilation can possibly help identify patients who might benefit from positioning therapy and guide those maneuvers in real-time. Therefore, in this prospective observational study, we aimed to discover typical patterns in response to positioning maneuvers. METHODS: Distribution of ventilation in 10 healthy volunteers and in 12 patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure due to coronavirus disease 2019 was measured in supine, left, and right lateral positions using electrical impedance tomography. RESULTS: In this study, patients with coronavirus disease 2019 showed a variety of ventilation patterns, which were not predictable, whereas all but one healthy volunteer showed a typical and expected gravity-dependent distribution of ventilation with the body positions. CONCLUSION: Distribution of ventilation and response to lateral positioning is variable and thus unpredictable in spontaneously breathing patients with coronavirus disease 2019. Electrical impedance tomography might add useful information on the immediate reaction to postural maneuvers and should be elucidated further in clinical studies. Therefore, we suggest a customized individualized positioning therapy guided by electrical impedance tomography.

Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery to treat esophageal achalasia. During POEM, cardiovascular dynamics can be impaired by capnoperitoneum, capnomediastinum, and systemic carbon dioxide accumulation. We systematically investigated changes in cardiovascular dynamics during POEM. We included 31 patients having POEM in this single-center prospective observational study. Before and every 5 min during POEM we measured mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), cardiac index (CI), stroke volume index (SVI), and systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) using non-invasive finger cuff-derived pulse wave analysis. During POEM, the median MAP was higher than the median baseline MAP of 77 (67;86) mmHg. HR (median at baseline: 67 (60;72) bpm), CI (2.8 (2.5;3.2) L/min/m2), SVI (42 (34;51) mL/m2), and SVRI (1994 (1652; 2559) dyn × s × cm-5 × m-2) remained stable during POEM. Mixed model-derived 95% confidence limits of hemodynamic variables during POEM were 72 to 106 mmHg for MAP, 65 to 79 bpm for HR, 2.7 to 3.3 L/min/m2 for CI, 37 and 46 mL/m2 for SVI, and 1856 and 2954 dyn × s × cm-5 × m-2 for SVRI. POEM is a safe procedure with regard to cardiovascular dynamics as it does not markedly impair MAP, HR, CI, SVI, or SVRI.

Idiopathic achalasia is a motility disorder of the esophagus with important implications on anesthesia and periprocedural management. As new and more complex treatment options develop, anesthesiologists are increasingly involved with these patients. The cardinal symptoms of achalasia are as follows: dysphagia, regurgitation, chest pain, and weight loss. Achalasia is also associated with an increased risk of aspiration. Patients are frequently treated by endoscopic botulinum toxin injections, pneumatic dilation of the lower esophageal sphincter, laparoscopic Heller myotomy, or peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). The POEM procedure is based on the concept of "natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery." Because the integrity of the esophageal wall is deliberately interrupted during POEM, the mediastinum and the peritoneal cavity may be exposed. Thus, the insufflated carbon dioxide frequently causes hypercapnia, tension capnoperitoneum, capnomediastinum, or pneumothoraces. An interdisciplinary team, skilled in diagnostics and emergency measures such as therapeutic hyperventilation, percutaneous abdominal needle decompression, or pleural drainage, is essential for the successful periprocedural management of POEM. POEM is one endoscopic procedure that requires general anesthesia. But neither anesthesia-specific care algorithms nor evidence-based recommendations are currently available for these patients. Because institutional experience varies broadly across the globe, this review examines anesthesia recommendations and perioperative management of POEM procedures based on 7 retrospective case series, 1 prospective study, and our personal experience.

PURPOSE: Combined high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is a favorable treatment option in non-metastatic prostate cancer. However, reports on toxicity and outcome have mainly focused on younger patients. We aimed to determine toxicity and biochemical control rates after combined HDR-BT and EBRT in men ≥75 years. METHODS: From 1999 to 2015, 134 patients aged ≥75 years (median 76 years; 75-82 years) were identified. Patients received 18 Gy of HDR-BT (9 Gy/fraction on days 1 and 8) with an iridium-192 source. After 1 week, supplemental EBRT with a target dose of 50.4 Gy was started (delivered in 1.8 Gy fractions). RESULTS: Median follow-up time was 25 months (0-127 months). No severe (grade 4) gastrointestinal (GIT) or genitourinary (GUT) toxicities were observed. In 76 patients (56.7%), 3D conformal radiation therapy (CRT) and in 34.3% intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) was applied. CRT-treated patients were at a 2.17-times higher risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.31-3.57, p = 0.002) of experiencing GUT. GIT risks could be reduced by 78% using IMRT (HR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.07-0.75, p = 0.015). Patients with a higher T stage (T2c-3a/b) were less likely to experience GIT or GUT (HR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.29-0.85, p = 0.011 and HR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.81, p = 0.005, respectively). CONCLUSION: HDR-BT/EBRT is a well-tolerated treatment option for elderly men ≥75 years with a limited number of comorbidities and localized intermediate- or high-risk prostate cancer. IMRT should be favored since side effects were significantly reduced in IMRT-treated patients.

PURPOSE: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a novel technique for treating esophageal achalasia. During POEM, carbon dioxide (CO2) is insufflated to aid surgical dissection, but it may inadvertently track into surrounding tissues, causing systemic CO2 uptake and tension capnoperitoneum. This in turn may affect cardiorespiratory function. This study quantified these cardiorespiratory effects and treatment by hyperventilation and percutaneous abdominal needle decompression (PND). METHODS: One hundred and seventy-three consecutive patients who underwent POEM were included in this four-year retrospective study. Procedure-related changes in peak inspiratory pressure (pmax), end-tidal CO2 levels (etCO2), minute ventilation (MV), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR) were analyzed. We also quantified the impact of PND on these cardiorespiratory parameters. RESULTS: During the endoscopic procedure, cardiorespiratory parameters increased from baseline: pmax 15.1 (4.5) vs 19.8 (4.7) cm H2O; etCO2 4.5 (0.4) vs 5.5 (0.9) kPa [34.0 (2.9) vs 41.6 (6.9) mmHg]; MAP 73.9 (9.7) vs 99.3 (15.2) mmHg; HR 67.6 (12.4) vs 85.3 (16.4) min-1 (P < 0.001 for each). Hyperventilation [MV 5.9 (1.2) vs 9.0 (1.8) L·min-1, P < 0.001] was applied to counteract iatrogenic hypercapnia. Individuals with tension capnoperitoneum treated with PND (n = 55) had higher peak pmax values [22.8 (5.7) vs 18.4 (3.3) cm H2O, P < 0.001] than patients who did not require PND. After PND, pmax [22.8 (5.7) vs 19.9 (4.3) cm H2O, P = 0.045] and MAP [98.2 (16.3) vs 88.6 (11.8) mmHg, P = 0.013] decreased. Adverse events included pneumothorax (n = 1), transient myocardial ischemia (n = 1), and subcutaneous emphysema (n = 49). The latter precluded immediate extubation in eight cases. Postanesthesia care unit (PACU) stay was longer in individuals with subcutaneous emphysema than in those without [74.9 min (34.5) vs 61.5 (26.8 min), P = 0.007]. CONCLUSION: Carbon dioxide insufflation during POEM produces systemic CO2 uptake and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Changes in cardiorespiratory parameters include increased pmax, etCO2, MAP, and HR. Hyperventilation and PND help mitigate some of these changes. Subcutaneous emphysema is common and may delay extubation and prolong PACU stay.

Objectives: In this article, we present our initial clinical experience with staged minimally invasive direct coronary bypass (MIDCAB), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in high-risk octogenarians (Hybrid). Background: The use of percutaneous techniques for managing structural heart diseases, especially in elderly high-risk patients, has revolutionized the treatment of structural heart diseases. These procedures are present predominantly being offered as isolated interventions. The feasibility, clinical benefit, and outcomes of combining these techniques with MIDCAB have not been sufficiently explored and have subsequently been underreported in the contemporary literature. Methods: Four consecutive octogenarians with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and complex coronary artery disease (CAD) that were at high risk for conventional surgery with extracorporeal circulation (ECC) were discussed in our Multidisciplinary Heart Team (MDH). Our MDH consisted of an interventional cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, and cardiac anesthesiologist. A hybrid approach with the alternative strategy comprising of MIDCAB, PCI, and TAVI in a staged fashion was agreed on. All 4 patients had both PCI/stenting and MIDCAB prior to deployment of the TAVI-prosthesis. Results: From January 2019 to December 2020, 4 consecutive patients aged between 83 and 85 (3 male/1 female) years were scheduled for MIDCAB/PCI followed by percutaneous treatment of severe symptomatic AS. Intraoperatively, one patient was converted to full sternotomy, and surgery was performed by off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. The overall procedural success rate was 100% in all 4 patients with resolution of their initial presenting cardiopulmonary symptoms. There were no severe complications associated with all hybrid procedures. There was no 30-day mortality in all patients. All patients were discharged home with a median hospital stay ranging between 9 and 25 days. All patients have since then been followed-up regularly. There was one noncardiac-related mortality at 6-months postsurgery. All other patients were well at 1-year follow-up with improved New York Heart Association Class II. Conclusions: In a selected group of elderly, high prohibitive risk patients with CAD and severe symptomatic AS, a staged approach with MIDCAB and PCI followed by TAVI can be safely performed with excellent outcomes. We advocate a MDH-based preliminary evaluation of this patient cohort in selecting suitable patients and appropriate timing of each stage of the hybrid procedure.

Introduction: The rapid-deployment valve system (RDVS) was introduced to facility minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. In this study we evaluate the potential benefits of RDVS in elderly high-risk patients with endocarditis of the aortic valve. Materials and Methods: Since the introduction of RDVS in our institution in December 2017 through October 2021, EDWARDS INTUITY rapid-deployment prosthesis (Model 8300A, Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA, USA) has been implanted in a total of 115 patients for different indications by a single surgeon. Out of one-hundred and fifteen cases of RDVS implantation, seven patients with a median age of 77 yrs. (range 62-84yrs.), suffered from active infective endocarditis of the aortic valve. The median EuroSCORE II of these highly selected patient cohort was 77% (range 19-80%). Patient data were evaluated perioperatively including intra-operative data as well as in-hospital morbidity/mortality and follow-up after discharge from hospital. Results: Three patients underwent previous cardiac surgery. Concomitant procedures were performed in six patients including, ascending aorta replacement (n = 3), mitral valve repair (n = 1), pulmonary valve replacement (n = 1), bypass surgery (n = 1), left atrial appendix resection (n = 1) and anterior mitral valve repair (n = 1). Median aortic cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass time was 56 min (range 29-122 min) and 81 min (range 45-162 min.), respectively. Post-operative complications in these elderly high-risk patients were atrial fibrillation (n = 3) and re-exploration for pericardial effusion (n = 1). One pacemaker implantation was required on postoperative day 6 due to sick sinus syndrome. There was one in-hospital death (14%) and one during follow-up (14%). Conclusion: Rapid-deployment aortic valve system seems to be a viable option with acceptable morbidity and mortality in elderly high-risk patients with active infective endocarditis of the aortic valve.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) such as spirometry and blood gas analysis have been claimed to improve preoperative risk assessment. This systematic review summarizes the available scientific literature regarding the ability of PFTs to predict postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) in non-thoracic surgery. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library for pertinent original research articles (PROSPERO CRD42020215502), framed by the PIT-criteria (PIT, participants, index test, target conditions), respecting the PRISMA-DTA recommendations (DTA, diagnostic test accuracy). RESULTS: 46 original research studies were identified that used PFT-findings as index tests and PPC as target condition. QUADAS-2 quality assessment revealed a high risk of bias regarding patient selection, blinding, and outcome definitions. Qualitative synthesis of prospective studies revealed inconclusive study findings: 65% argue for and 35% against preoperative spirometry, and 43% argue for blood gas analysis. A (post-hoc) subgroup analysis in prospective studies with low-risk of selection bias identified a possible benefit in upper abdominal surgery (three studies with 959 participants argued for and one study with 60 participants against spirometry). CONCLUSION: As the existing literature is inconclusive it is currently unknown if PFTs improve risk assessment before non-thoracic surgery. Spirometry should be considered in individuals with key indicators for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) scheduling for upper abdominal surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TF-TAVI) is an established therapy for patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis, which requires periprocedural anaesthesia care. In 2015, the German Federal Joint Committee released a directive on minimally invasive heart valve interventions which defines institutional infrastructural requirements in German heart centres. But still generally accepted expert consensus recommendations or national or international guidelines regarding periprocedural anaesthesia management for TF-TAVI are lacking. This nationwide cross-sectional study had two major objectives: first to assess the concordance with existing national regulations regarding infrastructural requirements and second to evaluate the status quo of periprocedural anaesthesia management for patients undergoing TF-TAVI in German heart centres. DESIGN: Multicentre cross-sectional online study to evaluate the periprocedural anaesthesia management. SETTING: In this nationwide cross-sectional study, electronic questionnaires were sent out to anaesthesia departments at TF-TAVI-performing centres in Germany in March 2019. PARTICIPANTS: 78 anaesthesia departments of German heart centres. RESULTS: 54 (69.2%) centres returned the questionnaire of which 94.4% stated to hold regular Heart Team meetings, 75.9% to have ready-to-use heart-lung machines available on-site, 77.8% to have cardiac surgeons and 66.7% to have perfusionists routinely attending throughout TF-TAVI procedures. Regarding periprocedural anaesthesia management, 41 (75.9%) of the participating centres reported to predominantly use 'monitored anaesthesia care' and 13 (24.1%) to favour general anaesthesia. 49 (90.7%) centres stated to use institutional standard operating procedures for anaesthesia. Five-lead ECG, central venous lines, capnometry and intraprocedural echocardiography were reported to be routine measures in 85.2%, 83.3%, 77.8% and 51.9% of the surveyed heart centres. CONCLUSIONS: The concordance with national regulations, anaesthesia management and in-house standards for TF-TAVI vary broadly among German heart centres. According to the opinion of the authors, international expert consensus recommendations and/or guidelines would be helpful to standardise peri interventional anaesthesia care.

Assessment and treatment of postoperative pain can be challenging as objective examination techniques to detect and quantify pain are lacking. We aimed to investigate changes of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in patients with postoperative pain before and after treatment with opioid analgesics. In an observational study in 20 postoperative patients, we monitored for postoperative pain, hemodynamic parameters, and catecholamines before and during treatment. VOCs in the patients were determined by direct real-time proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry prior (0 min) and after piritramide application (15 min as well as 30 min). Cardiovascular variables changed and norepinephrine levels decreased during treatment. The VOCs acetonitrile (<0.001), acetaldehyde (p = 0.002), benzopyran (p = 0.004), benzene (p < 0.001), hexenal (p = < 0.001), 1-butanethiol (p = 0.004), methanethiol (p < 0.001), ethanol (p = 0.003), and propanol (p = < 0.001) changed significantly over time. Patients with Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) < 4 showed a significantly lower concentration of hexenal compared to patients with NRS > 4 at the time points 15 min (45.0 vs. 385.3 ncps, p = 0.047) and 30 min (38.3 vs. 334.6 ncps, p = 0.039). Breath analysis can provide additional information for noninvasive monitoring for analgesic treatment in postoperative patients.

Intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA) is an established, safe and simple technique, being applicable for various surgeries on the upper and lower limbs. In 1908, IVRA was first described by the Berlin surgeon August Bier, hence the name "Bier's Block". Although his technique was effective, it was cumbersome and fell into disuse when neuroaxial and percutaneous plexus blockades gained widespread popularity in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, it became widespread, when the New Zealand anesthesiologist Charles McKinnon Holmes praised its use by means of new available local anesthetics. Today, IVRA is still popular in many countries being used in the emergency room, for outpatients and for high-risk patients with contraindications for general anesthesia. IVRA offers a favorable risk-benefit ratio, cost-effectiveness, sufficient muscle relaxation and a fast on- and offset. New upcoming methods for monitoring, specialized personnel and improved emergency equipment made IVRA even safer. Moreover, IVRA may be applied to treat complex regional pain syndromes. Prilocaine and lidocaine are considered as first-choice local anesthetics for IVRA. Also, various adjuvant drugs have been tested to augment the effect of IVRA, and to reduce post-deflation tourniquet pain. Since major adverse events are rare in IVRA, it is regarded as a very safe technique. Nevertheless, systemic neuro- and cardiotoxic side effects may be linked to an uncontrolled systemic flush-in of local anesthetics and must be avoided. This review gives a historical overview of more than 100 years of experience with IVRA and provides a current view of IVRA with relevant key facts for the daily clinical routine.

The parasitic protozoon Trichomonas vaginalis is the pathogen of trichomoniasis, the most common non-viral, sexually transmitted disease in humans. Inositol phosphates function in the pathomechanisms of a number of human pathogenic protozoa. Recent findings point to a role of inositol phosphates in T. vaginalis' adaption to oxygen exposure during change of host. Six inositol phosphate kinase genes (tvip6k1-4, tvipk1-2) were identified in the T. vaginalis genome by us all coding for proteins containing canonical sequence motifs of the major group of animal inositol phosphate kinases (PDKG, SSLL, DFG/A). When characterizing the purified protein product of tvip6k1, we discovered that the major activity of the highly active enzyme (˜2 µmol/min/mg) is a conversion of InsP6 to 6PP-InsP5 and not 5PP-InsP5 as by animal isoforms. Thus TvIP6K1 is a novel IP6-6K. The enzyme also converts Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 to products pyrophosphorylated both at 6- and 4-phosphate still having a free 5-hydroxyl. In addition, the enzyme has a minor selectivity to phosphorylate the 3-OH in Ins(1,2,4,5)P4 and Ins(1,2,4,5,6)P5. To present knowledge this novel enzyme is restricted to protozoa. Since its structure is predicted to be distinctly different from animal IP6K (IP6-5K) forms, TvIP6-6K may become a promising target to search for novel trichomoniasis specific drugs.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether the use of central venous catheters (CVC) improves a patient's clinical outcome after elective intracranial supratentorial procedures. METHODS: This two-armed, single-center retrospective study sought to compare patients undergoing elective intracranial surgery with and without CVCs. Standard anaesthesia procedures were modified during the study period resulting in the termination of obligatory CVC instrumentation for supratentorial procedures. Peri-operative adverse events (AEs) were evaluated as primary endpoint. RESULTS: The data of 621 patients in total was analysed in this study (301 with and 320 without CVC). Patient characteristics and surgical procedures were comparable between both study groups. A total of 132 peri-operative AEs (81 in the group with CVC vs. 51 in the group without CVC) regarding neurological, neurosurgical, cardiovascular events and death were observed. CVC patients suffer from AEs almost twice as often as non CVC patients (ORadjusted = 1.98; 95%CI[1.28-3.06]; p = 0.002). Complications related to catheter placement (pneumothorax and arterial malpuncture) were observed in 1.0% of the cases. The ICU treatment period in patients with CVC was 22 (19;24) vs. 21 (19;24) hours (p = 0.413). The duration of hospital stay was also similar between groups (9 (7;13) vs. 8 (7;11) days, p = 0.210). The total time of ventilation (350 (300;440) vs. 335 (281;405) min, p = 0.003) and induction time (40 (35;50) vs. 30 (25;35) min, p<0.001) was found to be prolonged significantly in the group with CVCs. There were no differences found in post-operative inflammatory markers as well as antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSION: The data of our retrospective study suggests that patients undergoing elective neurosurgical procedures with CVCs do not demonstrate any additional benefits in comparison to patients without a CVC.

The parasitic protozoan Entamoeba histolytica is able to invade human tissues by secreting proteolytic enzymes. This secretion is regulated by inositol phosphate-mediated Ca(2+) release from internal stores. To further investigate the inositol phosphate metabolism of Entamoeba histolytica four putative inositol phosphate kinase genes (ehipk1-4) were identified and their expression analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR using RNA of trophozoites. Furthermore inositol phosphate kinase EhIPK1 was recombinantly expressed, purified and enzymatically characterized. Its main activity is the conversion of InsP(6) to 5PP-Ins(1,2,3,4,6)P(5), one of the main inositol phosphates found in Entamoeba histolytica. Remarkably, EhIPK1 possesses several additional enzymatic activities, e.g. the phosphorylation of the Ca(2+)-releasing second messenger Ins(1,4,5)P(3).We were able to identify several compounds with inhibitory potential against EhIPK1. Because of the important role of inositol phosphates in the invasion of human tissues by Entamoeba histolytica, inositol phosphate metabolizing enzymes are interesting targets for novel therapeutic approaches.
