RESUMO
We report high-magnetic-field (up to 45 T) c-axis thermal-expansion and magnetostriction experiments on URu(2)Si(2) single crystals. The sample length change ΔL(c)(T(HO))/L(c) associated with the transition to the "hidden order" phase becomes increasingly discontinuous as the magnetic field is raised above 25 T. The reentrant ordered phase III is clearly observed in both the thermal expansion ΔL(c)(T)/L(c) and magnetostriction ΔL(c)(B)/L(c) above 36 T, in good agreement with previous results. The sample length is also discontinuous at the boundaries of this phase, mainly at the upper boundary. A change in the sign of the coefficient of thermal expansion α(c)=1/L(c)(∂ΔL(c)/∂T) is observed at the metamagnetic transition (B(M) ~ 38 T), which is likely related to the existence of a quantum critical end point.
RESUMO
We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CeIn(3) in magnetic fields extending to approximately 90 T, well above the Néel critical field of mu(0)H(c) approximately 61 T. The unreconstructed Fermi surface a sheet is observed in the high magnetic field polarized paramagnetic limit, but with its effective mass and Fermi surface volume strongly reduced in size compared to that observed in the low magnetic field paramagnetic regime under pressure. The spheroidal topology of this sheet provides an ideal realization of the transformation from a "large Fermi surface" accommodating f electrons to a "small Fermi surface" when the f-electron moments become polarized.
RESUMO
The heavy fermion system exhibits properties that range from an incommensurate antiferromagnet for small to an exotic superconductor on the Ir-rich end of the phase diagram. At intermediate where antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity, two types of magnetic order are observed: the incommensurate one of and a new, commensurate antiferromagnetism that orders separately. The coexistence of -electron superconductivity with two distinct -electron magnetic orders is unique among unconventional superconductors, adding a new variety to the usual coexistence found in magnetic superconductors.
RESUMO
Experimental results for the susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, 4f occupation number, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance for single crystals of the intermediate valence (IV) compound YbAl3 show that, in addition to the Kondo temperature scale T(K) approximately 670 K, there is a low temperature scale T(coh) approximately 30-40 K for the onset of Fermi liquid coherence. Furthermore, the crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid regime to the high temperature local moment regime is slower than predicted by the Anderson impurity model. We suggest that these effects are generic for IV compounds and we discuss them in terms of the theory of the Anderson lattice.
