RESUMO

Inter/intramolecular hydrogen bonding of a series of hydroxystearic acids (HSAs) are investigated. Self-assembly of molecular gels obtained from these fatty acids with isomeric hydroxyl groups is influenced by the position of the secondary hydroxyl group. 2-Hydroxystearic acid (2HSA) does not form a molecular dimer, as indicated by FT-IR, and growth along the secondary axis is inhibited because the secondary hydroxyl group is unable to form intermolecular H-bonds. As well, the XRD long spacing is shorter than the dimer length of hydroxystearic acid. 3-Hydroxystearic acid (3HSA) forms an acyclic dimer, and the hydroxyl groups are unable to hydrogen bond, preventing the crystal structure from growing along the secondary axis. Finally, isomers 6HSA, 8HSA, 10HSA, 12HSA, and 14HSA have similar XRD and FT-IR patterns, suggesting that these molecules all self-assemble in a similar fashion. The monomers form a carboxylic cyclic dimer, and the secondary hydroxyl group promotes growth along the secondary axis.

RESUMO

The reflective component of e-Portfolios is said to help students improve second or foreign language writing in terms of motivation and academic results. Despite this positive advocacy, scholars remain unclear about how e-Portfolios can develop students' self-regulatory abilities in writing classrooms, especially when students engage in complex e-Portfolio construction processes with peers, parents, teachers, their community, digital tools, and online resources. Recently, researchers have argued that not only do e-Portfolios promote self-regulated learning, but they also support co-regulation of learning wherein the latter is socially mediated by curriculum design, instructional materials, and in-class interaction patterns. Indeed, students' inner development of self-regulatory capacity is closely influenced by external forces, which deserve more scholarly investigation. The review fills this gap by emphasizing that besides self-regulated learning, e-Portfolios can support students' co-regulation of learning by way of their connectivity, visibility, and circulation. This review has four sections. The first section defines key concepts, namely e-Portfolios, self-regulated, co-regulated, and socially shared-regulated learning, and introduces how e-Portfolios foster self-regulation of learning in second language writing. The second section unpacks two conceptual models that underpin self-regulated and co-regulated learning relating to e-Portfolios. The third section presents a brief review, showcasing how e-Portfolios featuring self-regulation of learning can also support co-regulation of learning. The final section recommends strategies that facilitate self-regulation and co-regulation of learning in e-Portfolios reciprocally, and discusses implications for pedagogy and research.

The formation kinetics of self-assembling tubules composed of phytosterol:gamma-oryzanol mixtures were investigated at the Canadian Light Source on the mid-IR beamline using synchrotron radiation and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The Avrami model was fitted to the changing hydrogen bonding density occurring at 3450 cm(-1). The nucleation process was found to be highly dependent on the molecular structure of the phytosterol. The nucleation event for cholesterol:gamma-oryzanol was determined to be sporadic whereas 5alpha-cholestan-3beta-ol:gamma-oryzanol and beta-sitosterol:gamma-oryzanol underwent instantaneous nucleation. One-dimensional growth occurred for each phytosterol:gamma-oryzanol mixture and involved the evolution of highly specific intermolecular hydrogen bonds. More detailed studies on the cholesterol:gamma-oryzanol system indicated that the nucleation activation energy, determined from multiple rate constants, obtained using the Avrami model, was at a minimum when the two compounds were at a 1:1 weight ratio. This resulted in drastic differences to the microscopic structures and affected the macroscopic properties such as turbidity. The formation of the phytosterol:gamma-oryzanol complex was due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which was in agreement with the infrared spectroscopic evidence.

Objective: This study evaluated the capability of a MALDI Biotyper system equipped with the newly introduced MBT STAR-BL module to simultaneously perform species identification and ß-lactamase-mediated resistance detection in bacteremia -causing bacteria isolated from cultured isolates and patient-derived blood cultures (BCs). Methods: Two hundred retrospective cultured isolates and 153 prospective BCs containing Gram-negative rods (GNR) were collected and subjected to direct bacterial identification, followed by the measurement of ß-lactamase activities against ampicillin, piperacillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and meropenem using the MBT STAR-BL module. The results and turnaround times were compared with those of routine microbiological processing. All strains were also characterized by beta-lactamase PCR and sequencing. Results: Using the saponin-based extraction method, MALDI-TOF MS correctly identified bacteria in 116/134 (86.6%) monomicrobial BCs. The detection sensitivities for ß-lactamase activities against ampicillin, piperacillin, third-generation cephalosporin and meropenem were 91.3, 100, 97.9, and 100% for cultured isolates, and 80.4, 100, 68.8, and 40% for monomicrobial BCs (n = 134) respectively. The overall specificities ranged from 91.5 to 100%. Furthermore, the MBT STAR-BL and conventional drug susceptibility test results were concordant in 14/19 (73.7%) polymicrobial cultures. Reducing the logRQ cut-off value from 0.4 to 0.2 increased the direct detection sensitivities for ß-lactamase activities against ampicillin, cefotaxime and meropenem in BCs to 85.7, 87.5, and 100% respectively. The MBT STAR-BL test enabled the reporting of ß-lactamase-producing GNR at 14.16 and 47.64 h before the interim and final reports of routine BCs processing, respectively, were available. Conclusion: The MALDI Biotyper system equipped with the MBT STAR-BL module enables the simultaneous rapid identification of bacterial species and ß-lactamase-mediated resistance from BCs and cultured isolates. Adjustment of the logRQ cut-off value to 0.2 significantly increased the detection sensitivities for clinically important drug-resistant pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Intimal hyperplasia and resulting restenosis limit the efficacy of coronary stenting. We studied a coronary stent coated with the antiproliferative agent paclitaxel as a means of preventing restenosis. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, controlled, triple-blind study to evaluate the ability of a paclitaxel-eluting stent to inhibit restenosis. At three centers, 177 patients with discrete coronary lesions (<15 mm in length, 2.25 to 3.5 mm in diameter) underwent implantation of paclitaxel-eluting stents (low dose, 1.3 microg per square millimeter, or high dose, 3.1 microg per square millimeter) or control stents. Antiplatelet therapies included aspirin with ticlopidine (120 patients), clopidogrel (18 patients), or cilostazol (37 patients). Clinical follow-up was performed at one month and four to six months, and angiographic follow-up at four to six months. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in 99 percent of the patients (176 of 177). At follow-up, the high-dose group, as compared with the control group, had significantly better results for the degree of stenosis (mean [+/-SD], 14+/-21 percent vs. 39+/-27 percent; P<0.001), late loss of luminal diameter (0.29+/-0.72 mm vs. 1.04+/-0.83 mm, P<0.001), and restenosis of more than 50 percent (4 percent vs. 27 percent, P<0.001). Intravascular ultrasound analysis demonstrated a dose-dependent reduction in the volume of intimal hyperplasia (31, 18, and 13 mm3, in the high-dose, low-dose, and control groups, respectively). There was a higher rate of major cardiac events in patients receiving cilostazol than in those receiving ticlopidine or clopidogrel. Among patients receiving ticlopidine or clopidogrel, event-free survival was 98 percent and 100 percent in the high-dose and control groups, respectively, at one month, and 96 percent in both at four to six months. CONCLUSIONS: Paclitaxel-eluting stents used with conventional antiplatelet therapy effectively inhibit restenosis and neointimal hyperplasia, with a safety profile similar to that of standard stents.

The effect of pH (5.0 or 7.0) and temperature (25.0, 65.0 and 95.0 °C) on the physicochemical and emulsifying properties of type-1 (with calcium, ALA-1) and type-3 (without calcium, ALA-3) alpha-lactalbumin (ALA) were examined. By increasing the temperature of pre-treatment, changes in ALA conformation allowed for greater surface hydrophobicity and caused changes in its surface charge. pH also influenced surface charge for ALA where enhanced repulsion at pH 7.00 was observed resulting in reduced aggregation despite having greater hydrophobicity. Findings indicate that changes to protein conformation using various pH and temperature pre-treatments influenced their surface chemistry, aggregation and ability to align at the oil-water interface. Overall, emulsions were found to be more stable at pH 7.0 than 5.0 due to the greater amount of electrostatic repulsive forces between droplets present at pH 7.0. Under the conditions examined in this study, ALA-3 pre-treated at 65 °C and at pH 7.00 resulted in the best emulsifying properties.

The rheological properties of 1.0% (w/w) whey protein isolate (WPI)-κ-/ι-carrageenan (CG) mixtures were investigated during a slow acidification process by glucono-δ-lactone from pH 7.00 to ∼4.20 as a function of biopolymer mixing ratio and in the presence and absence of oil droplets. In all cases, electrostatic coupled biopolymer and emulsion gel networks were formed at pH values corresponding to where attractive interactions between WPI and CG began. Formed WPI-CG complexes were found to be surface active, capable of lowering interfacial tension and forming viscoelastic interfacial films within emulsion-based systems. Both biopolymer and emulsion-based gels increased in strength and elasticity as the CG content increased, regardless of the type of CG present. However, WPI-ι-CG coupled networks were stronger than WPI-κ-CG networks, presumably due to the higher number of sulfate groups attracting the WPI molecules.

RESUMO

Proteins are of great interest due to their amphiphilic nature, which allows them to reduce the interfacial tension at the oil-water interface. The incorporation of proteins at the oil-water interface has allowed scientists to utilise them to form emulsions (O/W or W/O), which may be used in food formulations, drug and nutrient delivery. The systematic study of the proteins at the interface and the factors that affect their stability (i.e., conformation, pH, solvent conditions, and thermal treatment) has allowed for a broader use of these emulsions tailored for various applications. In this review, the factors affecting the stability of emulsions using food proteins will be discussed. The use of polysaccharides to complex with proteins will also be explored in relation to enhancing emulsion stability.

BACKGROUND: To diagnose influenza A(H1N1)v virus infection, accurate and rapid detection are important. However, there is scanty data on the performance of various laboratory diagnostics. OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of rapid antigen test (RAT), viral culture and RT-PCR for the detection of influenza A(H1N1)v virus and to correlate their performance with the time after symptom onset and viral load. STUDY DESIGN: From May 1, 2009 to June 25, 2009, respiratory samples were collected from 5740 individuals suspected of having influenza A(H1N1)v infection. The performance of viral culture and RT-PCR were investigated and correlated with the time after symptom onset. The sensitivity of RAT ESPLINE influenza A & B-N (Fujirebio Inc, Tokyo) was evaluated using a subset of 60 samples from patients diagnosed as having influenza A(H1N1)v infection. RESULTS: Using respiratory samples from 587 patients diagnosed with influenza A(H1N1)v infection, comparison of laboratory diagnostics showed viral culture and RT-PCR gave comparable results with overall sensitivity of 93.9% and 98.1%, respectively. For RAT, when testing a subset of 60 samples collected < or =3 days following symptom onset, the sensitivity was 62%. CONCLUSIONS: Although viral shedding is prolonged and of higher titre in influenza A(H1N1)v infection, RAT showed a low sensitivity of 62% among patients presenting < or =3 days after symptom onset. Viral culture showed comparable performance with RT-PCR and with sensitivity better than that documented for seasonal influenza.
