OBJECTIVE: Pneumoconiosis, encompassing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis and asbestosis, is one of the most common occupational diseases in China. Previous studies revealed significant associations between genetic variations and pneumoconiosis risk among individuals in different countries. With the known variability of genetic makeup between ethnicities, susceptibility to pneumoconiosis due to genetic differences is likely to be ethnicity-specific. The present review aimed at providing a comprehensive overview on the association between genetic polymorphisms and susceptibility of pneumoconiosis, specifically among people in China. METHODS: The literature search was performed in seven English and Chinese databases using keywords related to the review aim. An appraisal of the methodological quality of the included studies was conducted using the assessment tool derived from the Strengthening the Reporting of Genetic Association Studies (STREGA) statement. RESULTS: Forty-five studies were included in this review. Genotypes of specific genes which are associated with the risk of CWP, silicosis and asbestosis were reported. Our findings showed that genes encoding inflammatory cytokines have been examined extensively, and they demonstrated an association between these genes and pneumoconiosis risk. Gene-environment interactions in pneumoconiosis susceptibility were also reported by a number of studies. CONCLUSIONS: This review summarised the evidence demonstrating the association between genetic polymorphisms and pneumoconiosis susceptibility among people in China, and that various genotypes could modify their risk to develop pneumoconiosis. The findings prompt that identification of individuals at high pneumoconiosis risk through genetic screening and strategies limiting their exposure to dust could be a potential strategy for the control of this occupational disease in China.

Pneumoconiosis is a common occupational lung disease among construction workers. Educational interventions targeting specific ethnic groups of construction workers are of benefit for pneumoconiosis prevention. The aim of this study was to develop a multimedia educational intervention for pneumoconiosis prevention for South Asian construction workers, and to evaluate its feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness in increasing knowledge of pneumoconiosis, modifying beliefs about pneumoconiosis, and enhancing intention to implement measures for its prevention among the workers. This evaluation was performed using the Reach-Effectiveness-Adoption-Implementation-Maintenance framework. A one-group design was adopted and intervention mapping was used to guide the process of intervention development, while the Health Belief Model guided the development of intervention content. The intervention was delivered at construction sites, ethnic minority associations and South Asian community centres. Data were collected via surveys completed at pre-intervention, post-intervention and 3 months after the intervention. A total of 1002 South Asian construction workers participated in the intervention. The participants reported a moderate-to-large increase in knowledge, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, cues to action and self-efficacy (Cohen's d: 0.37-0.89), a small reduction in perceived barriers (Cohen's d = 0.12) and a moderate improvement in attitudes and intention to practice (Cohen's d: 0.45, 0.51) at post-intervention. A follow-up survey of 121 participants found that the implementation of preventive measures appeared to increase. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the implementation of a culturally adapted multimedia educational intervention could be an effective approach to improving knowledge, self-efficacy and intention regarding pneumoconiosis prevention among South Asian construction workers.

Objective: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally-adapted Women's Wellness After Cancer Programme (WWACPHK) for improving health-related quality of life, anxiety and depressive symptoms and enhancing self-efficacy in engaging in healthy lifestyles among Chinese women treated for gynaecological cancer. Methods: This pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted from May to December 2018. Twenty-six women aged 18 or above who had completed treatment for gynaecological cancer were recruited from a gynaecology outpatient clinic of a public hospital in Hong Kong. They were randomised into intervention (n = 15) or control (n = 11) groups. All data collectors were blinded to the group allocation. Intervention participants were given access to the WWACPHK website and an online discussion forum facilitated by a trained research nurse for 12 weeks, while control participants received standard care. Trial feasibility was assessed by recruitment, consent, and retention rates and website use. Acceptability was explored through semi-structured interviews. Additionally, we trialed the data collection procedure and collected preliminary data on health-related quality of life, anxiety and depressive symptoms, dietary and exercise self-efficacy. Results: Of the 26 participants (Median age = 53.5 years) randomised, three participants dropped out of the study. Recruitment, consent and retention of participants and website use were satisfactory. No posting was made on the discussion forum. The intervention participants (n = 13) exhibited significantly greater improvement than the controls (n = 10) in perceived self-efficacy in adhering to an exercise routine at post-intervention (Cohen's d effect size(d) = 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18, 1.92) and 12-weeks after completion (d = 1.24, 95% CI: 0.32, 2.13). All participants were satisfied with the intervention. Conclusions: The WWACPHK is feasible and acceptable to Chinese women treated for gynaecological cancer and may improve their exercise self-efficacy. Patients with heart failure (HF) often present with signs and symptoms that are often nonspecific and with a wide differential diagnosis, making diagnosis and prognosis of HF by clinical presentation alone challenging. Our knowledge on genetic diversity is rapidly evolving with high-throughput DNA sequencing technology, which makes a great potential for genetic biomarker development. The present review attempts to provide a comprehensive review on the modification of major genetic components in HF patients and to explore the potential application of these components as clinical biomarkers in the diagnosis and in monitoring the progress of HF. The literature search was conducted using six databases, resulting in the inclusion of eighteen studies in the review. The findings of these studies were summarized narratively. An appraisal of the reporting quality of the included studies was conducted using a twelve-item checklist adapted from the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist. The findings showed that changes in genetic components in patients with HF compared to healthy controls could be noninvasive diagnostic or prognostic tools for HF with higher specificity and sensitivity in comparison with the traditional biomarkers. This review provided evidence for the potential of developing genetic biomarkers of HF.

Previous epidemiological studies had provided evidence for a link between the microbial dysbiosis and cancer, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC), yet the molecular basis of this link remains elusive. Recently, the association between plasma levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), an oxidised form of trimethylamine (TMA), and risks of various cancers was demonstrated. The discovery could potentially provide an alternative explanation for the aforementioned link, as TMA production is attributed to intestinal bacteria. Current evidence suggests that inflammation could be a potential molecular mechanism to explain the link between TMAO and cancer, although other mechanisms such as oxidative stress, DNA damage and disruption in protein folding might also play a role. This mini-review article first provides an overview of the current evidence for the association between TMAO and certain cancer types, and the potential mechanisms that could explain their association. Thereafter, the direction of further research on the connection between the intestinal microbiota, TMAO and cancer is suggested.
