In this study, we investigated the performance and reliability of commercial corrosion sensors for monitoring the integrity of piping systems in various fluid environments as an alternative to ultrasonic transducers. To this end, we investigated pipes' wall-thinning using commercial electrical resistance (ER), linear polarization resistance (LPR), and ultrasonic transducer (UT) sensors under various operating environments. A pilot-scale closed-loop test bed was built to simulate a real pipeline flow situation, from which the sensor data were collected and analyzed. Experimental results indicate that, in the case of the LPR sensor, it is challenging to accurately measure the corrosion rate when a specific measure exceeds the threshold in a severe corrosion environment. In contrast, the ER sensor could measure metal loss under all conditions and reflect the corresponding characteristics. The metal loss (about 0.25 mm) of the real pipe after the experiment was confirmed to be equal to the metal loss (0.254 mm) measured by the sensor. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed a high correlation between the results obtained from the ER and UT sensors. Thus, evaluating the remaining thickness of the piping system using the commercial ER sensor is deemed to be effective and reliable.

In this study, aluminum titanium nitride (AlTiN) coating was deposited by arc ion plating onto mirror finish STS 304 plate. The surface and cross-section of the coating was characterized by SEM and EDX analysis. Several electrochemical corrosion experiments were performed including rest potential measurement, potentiodynamic polarization experiment and Tafel analysis. The result of the experiments indicated that the AlTiN coating presented lower corrosion current density than the substrate material (STS 304) under uniform corrosion environment. It was also observed that AlTiN coating may have a risk of being attacked by localized corrosion attack such as pitting when pores or micro/nano particles in the coating are exposed to chloride ion containing corrosion environment, especially marine environment.

RESUMO

This study investigated the damage prevention potential range of anodized 5083-H321 aluminum alloy under a cavitation-erosion environment in seawater. Various applied potential conditions were determined through the cathodic polarization experiment. Then cavitation-erosion experiments were conducted with the applied potentials and the current density, weight loss, and surface damage depth were analyzed. The results presented excellent cavitation-erosion resistance in the concentration polarization section (-1.0~-0.8 V).

We employed human SK-MEL-28 cells as a model system to identify cellular proteins that accompany N-(4-methyl)phenyl-O-(4-methoxy)phenyl-thionocarbamate (MMTC)-induced apoptosis based on a proteomic approach. Cell viability tests revealed that SK-MEL-28 skin cancer cells underwent more cell death than normal HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with MMTC. Two-dimensional electrophoresis in conjunction with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis or computer matching with a protein database further revealed that the MMTC-induced apoptosis is accompanied by increased levels of caspase-1, checkpoint suppressor-1, caspase-4, NF-kappaB inhibitor, AP-2, c-Jun-N-terminal kinase, melanoma inhibitor, granzyme K, G1/S specific cyclin D3, cystein rich protein, Ras-related protein Rab-37 or Ras-related protein Rab-13, and reduced levels of EMS (oncogene), ATP synthase, tyrosine-phosphatase, Cdc25c, 14-3-3 protein or specific structure of nuclear receptor. The migration suppressing effect of MMTC on SK-MEL-28 cell was tested. MMTC suppressed the metastasis of SK-MEL-8 cells. It was also identified that MMTC had little angiogenic effect because it did not suppress the proliferation of HUVEC cell line. These results suggest that MMTC is a novel chemotherapeutic and metastatic agents against the SK-MEL-28 human melanoma cell line.

Aluminum alloy is a very strong reactivity material, but it has excellent corrosion resistance due to protective oxide film created in air. However, it is not practical because the film thickness is uneven and varies depending on the generation condition. Therefore, aluminum anodizing was performed to form film with commercially applicable hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. This offers such advantages as commercial applicability to large areas and low prices. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics with concentration of sulfuric acid electrolyte were compared with the two-step anodizing method which is widely used. A surface observation revealed regular structures and pores with the size of several tens of nm, and the anodized film presented excellent corrosion resistance with considerably low corrosion current density in sea water.
