RESUMO

Ferroptosis, a mode of cell death that was recently identified in 2012, is driven by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and distinct from other mechanisms of cell death such as autophagy and apoptosis. Ferroptosis has the unique features of disruptions in iron equilibrium, iron-induced lipid peroxidation, and the accumulation of glutamate-induced cellular toxicity. The regulation of ferroptosis mainly involves the iron, lipid, and amino acid metabolic pathways, which are controlled by system Xc-, voltage-dependent anion channels, p53 and other pathways. Neurodegenerative diseases involve gradual neuronal loss predominantly within the central nervous system and are categorized into both sporadic and rare hereditary disorders. These diseases result in the progressive decline of specific neuron populations and their interconnections. Recent investigations have revealed a strong correlation between the manifestation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases and ferroptosis. The pharmacological modulation of ferroptosis, whether by induction or inhibition, exhibits promising prospects for therapeutic interventions for these diseases. This review aims to examine the literature on ferroptosis and its implications in various neurodegenerative diseases. We hope to offer novel insights into the potential therapies targeting ferroptosis in central nervous system neurodegenerative diseases. However, there are still limitations of this review. First, despite our efforts to maintain objectivity during our analysis, this review does not cover all the studies on ferroptosis and neurodegenerative diseases. Second, cell death in neurodegenerative diseases is not solely caused by ferroptosis. Future research should focus on the interplay of different cell death mechanisms to better elucidate the specific disease pathogenesis.

RESUMO

Bosonic loss estimation has an important role in quantum metrology. It was once believed that the ultimate precision of this task is restricted to the standard quantum limit if no quantum probe is involved. Nevertheless, a recent proposal showed that this limit can be surpassed by utilizing ring resonators with coherent state probe. Here, we experimentally realize the resonator-based bosonic loss estimation and verify the resonant enhancement effect. This Letter explores the advantages of resonator-based metrology and sheds light on the development of high-precision miniature sensors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Qingyang is located in the northwest of China. By analyzing the current situation and risk factors of bullying in junior high schools in Qingyang City, and identify relevant data for formulating prevention and control measures of bullying in western backward areas. METHODS: Qingyang City is divided into four regions based on economic level and population quality. One junior high school is randomly selected from each region, a total of 1200 students from 4 junior high schools of different levels in Qingyang City were randomly selected, and the "Questionnaire on Middle School Students' School bullying" was administered between December 2021 and February 2022. RESULTS: The reporting rate of bullying in junior high schools in Qingyang was 47.35%. The incidence of campus bullying among urban-rural integration junior high schools, senior students, and male students is higher than that of municipal -level junior high schools, junior students, and female students (P< 0.05). The results of binary logistic regression showed that the second grade of junior high school (OR = 1.39,95% CI: 1.022-1.894), poor student performance (OR = 1.744,95% CI: 1.09-2.743), external dissatisfaction (OR = 2.09,95% CI: 1.177-3.427), mother working in an enterprise (OR = 1.623,95% CI: 1.074-2.453), and urban-rural integration middle school (OR = 3.631,95% CI: 2.547-5.177) were factors affecting bullying in junior high school campus. CONCLUSION: The reporting rate of bullying in junior high schools in Qingyang City was relatively high, mostly occurring in places lacking supervision and after-school hours. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

RESUMO

The non-reciprocity of a Sagnac interferometer provides ultra-high sensitivity for parameter estimation and offers a wide range of applications, especially for optical fiber sensing. In this work, we study a new type of non-reciprocity existing in an optical fiber Sagnac interferometer where the polarization dependent loss is taken into consideration. In particular, this non-reciprocity is irrelevant to the physical effects that have been considered in previous studies, which originates from the geometric phases induced by a continuous-weak-measurement. Thus, it has a unique phenomenon of sudden phase transition, which may open a new way for the future design of high precision optical fiber sensors.

RESUMO

Experiments based on a free-space platform have demonstrated that the weak-value amplification (WVA) technique can provide high sensitivity and precision for optical sensing and metrology. To promote this technique for real-world applications, it is more suitable to implement WVA based on an optical-fiber platform due to the lower cost, smaller scale, and higher stability. In contrast to the free-space platform, the birefringence in optical fiber is strong enough to cause polarization cross talk, and the amplitude-type noise must be taken into account. By theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration, we show that the optic-fiber-based WVA is robust in the presence of amplitude-type noise. In our experiment, even the angular misalignment on optical axes at the interface reaches 0.08 rad, and the sensitivity loss can be maintained at less than 3 dB. Moreover, the main results are valid to a simplified detection scheme that was recently proposed that is more compatible with the future design of optical-fiber-based WVA. Our results indicate the feasibility of implementing WVA based on optical fiber, which provides a possible way for designing optical sensors with higher sensitivity and stability in the future.

RESUMO

An adaptive correction algorithm is demonstrated based on weak measurement, which introduces a feedback and an additional interaction to the system and can dynamically adjust the operating point in accordance with the condition of the estimated phase change. Two schemes, fast adaptive correction and slow adaptive correction, are proposed for different conditions of the modulation device. Fast adaptive correction scheme can realize a real-time correction and maintain the high sensitivity. Slow adaptive correction scheme, as a supplement, can correct the distortion of the measured parameter by changing the measuring period. These two schemes are useful for high precision phase estimation with time in modern physics and practical applications, including, but not limited to, timing synchronization, accurate distance measurement, and gravity wave detection. Moreover, we discuss the deviation of the adaptive correction for considering system noise in practical measurement.

RESUMO

A high-nucleus silver nanopolycluster as a new type of silver-based polymer supercapacitor (SSc) by a simple and single-step synthesis process was designed and synthesized. The structural, optical, and electrochemical properties of SSc-2 were determined. This highly stable conductive 3D nanopolycluster shows great cycling stability, large capacity, and high energy density without any modification or doping process and so acts as an excellent SSc (412 F g-1 at 1.5 A g-1). In addition, there was a stable cycling performance (94% capacitance) following 7000 cycles at 3 A g-1 current density. The presence of fluorinated groups, 3D expansion of high-nucleus metallic clusters, and porosity are the advantages of SSc-2 that lead to stability, conductivity, and high capacity, respectively. These results lead to the development of a novel kind of SSc by overcoming the low conductivity and limited capacity challenges without any modification.

RESUMO

The first silver nanocluster with an octahedral template of TeO66- was synthesized as a neutral 36-nucleus nanocluster, and its structure was demonstrated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The peripheral ligands of the cagelike skeleton of the nanocluster are CF3COO- and tBuC≡C-. During the synthesis, the TeO66- template arranged the nanocluster, and a 36-nucleus nanocluster was formed. The effect of the template nature was displayed on the structural features of the nanocluster in comparison with an 8-nucleus cluster, with the same synthesis conditions. The photoluminescence and UV-vis absorption analyses of the nanocluster were also investigated. The nanocluster displayed near-infrared luminescence emission at 690 nm.

RESUMO

Polyphyllin II, a major steroidal saponin isolated from Paris polyphylla, exhibits significant pharmacological activities. In this study, a rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was established and validated for the determination of polyphyllin II in plasma. Polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII (internal standard) were separated on a Waters Acquity™ HSS T3 column and the mass analysis was performed in a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization ion source. Results showed that the method was sensitive (lower limit of quantitation 0.5 ng/ml), precise (<15%) and linear in the range of 0.5-500 ng/ml (r > 0.99). Interestingly, the sensitivity in current study was ~10 times higher than that in the previous study. The results of the pharmacokinetic study of polyphyllin II in rats suggested that polyphyllin II was poorly absorbed into blood and reached its highest concentration at ~3.67-5.00 h with a slow elimination half-life of 8.34-13.37 h. The bioavailability was 6.1-8.2%. The results indicated that the absorption of polyphyllin II may primarily occur via passive diffusion in rats. This study provides valuable information that can be used as a reference for the pharmacokinetic investigation of other steroidal saponins.

RESUMO

High-precision temperature sensor is demonstrated based on weak measurement using spectrum domain analysis. By introducing an extra phase to the postselection, the operating temperature range and temperature precision can be conveniently modulated. Spectral shifts resulted from temperature variation are robust to practical imperfections. The precision of 2.4 × 10-6°C can be achieved by a currently available spectrometer. The maximum operating range is associated with the nematic temperature range of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) sample. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of 16.16 nm/°C is obtained experimentally in different linear operating intervals.

RESUMO

The nanoscale measurement of temperature in the bulk of dielectrics initiated by a single ultrashort laser pulse was first investigated by black-body radiation. A structureless broad continuum emission has been recorded at an interval delay of 2 ns with a temporal gate of 2 ns and spectral resolution of about 0.137 nm, which provides the highest temporal and spectral precision ever. The temporally resolved emission spectrum was proved to be black-body radiation in nature, and temperature was obtained by fitting the radiation with the Planckian formula. Pulse energy was varied from 110 to 270 µJ at 600 fs and a pulse duration of 0.83 ns was also used. The temperature exhibited a small variation with an increasing pulse energy at 600 fs. However, due to the energy transfer from heated electrons to lattice, the temperature was sharply increased at pulse duration of 0.83 ns. It was estimated that heat accumulation started at 0.42-0.47 MHz for a laser pulse at 600 fs, while it was 0.25 MHz for a laser pulse at 0.83 ns.

RESUMO

Diffraction properties of photoinduced gratings recorded by overlapping two coherent beams at 532 nm in nematic liquid crystals doped with Disperse Red 1 were investigated with a probe beam at 632.8 nm. The grating was formed due to the alignment of dye molecules that leaded to the reorientation of the liquid crystal phase. The diffraction efficiency of the photoinduced grating was found to increase rapidly when the sample temperature was close to the clearing point in the nematic phase and a nearly 30-fold enhancement of the first-order diffraction efficiency was obtained. The pretransitional enhancement of the diffraction efficiency was discussed in terms of the reorientation of liquid crystals, optical nonlinearity effects and the onset of critical opalescence near the nematic-isotropic phase transition. Moreover, a peak shift of diffraction efficiency towards the lower temperature was observed with the increase of recording light intensity, which was attributed to laser induced photochemical disordering.

RESUMO

Polarization modulation of two-photon excited fluorescence in a V-shaped dipicolinate-triphenylamine compound was investigated with 100 fs 800 nm laser pulses. The peak fluorescence intensity versus the input irradiance was measured to meet a square dependence, which offered evidence for two-photon excited fluorescence. The variations of the two-photon excited fluorescence intensity showed strong response to the different polarized incident lights and were tightly dependent on the linearly polarized component of the incident light. Furthermore, the polarization modulation efficiency of the two-photon excited fluorescence had an obvious concentration dependence when the concentration of solution was under 2.5×10(-4) mol/L. The enhancement of modulation efficiency was attributed to the concentration dependence of the two-photon absorption cross section.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical and pathological features of ovarian transitional cell tumors. METHODS: Fourteen cases of ovarian transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) were selected and investigated for their clinical and pathological features. Their immunohistochemical profiles were compared with 12 cases of serous adenocarcinoma (SC) admixed with TCC and 4 cases of EC admixed with TCC 20 cases of pure high-grade serous adenocarcinoma (HG-SC), 15 cases of endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EC), 6 cases of Brenner tumor (BT, 2 cases of malignant BT and 4 cases of benign BT). RESULTS: The patients' age ranged from 36-63 years (mean, 56 years). All cases underwent surgery and postoperative chemotherapy with TP or CAP program. Clinical follow-up was available in 9 cases, of which 2 patients died. Histologically, all cases showed features of transitional cell carcinoma without BT component. Immunohistochemically, 13 of 14 TCCs were positive for WT-1 and all were positive for CK7, ER, PR and CA125, but negative for Uroplakin III and CK20.Similar immunohistochemical staining patterns were seen in SC admixed with TCC and pure HG-SC. Percentage of the 14 TCC cases were also diffusely positive for BRCA1. All SCs admixed with TCC and pure HG-SCs were diffusely or heterogeneously positive for WT-1, with a sharp contrast and mottled distribution pattern in the heterogeneous cases. All TCCs were diffusely and strongly positive for p53, while 16 of 20 cases of pure HG-SC were positive. The positive ratio of p53 in SCs admixed with TCC cases was 11/12.WT-1 expression in TCCs was significantly higher than BTs, ECs and ECs admixed with TCC (P < 0.01), while no obvious difference was seen when compared with SCs admixed with TCC and pure HG-SCs.SCs admixed with TCC, TCCs and EC were positive for BRCA1 except pure ECs and BTs. The positive rate of Ki-67 of BTs was low, while it was higher in TCCs, SCs admixed with TCC and pure HG-SCs. Only BTs expressed Uroplakin III. CONCLUSIONS: Ovarian TCC has characteristic morphological and immunohistochemical features, similar to SC but different from BT. Therefore, TCC should be considered as a morphological variant of HG-SC.

RESUMO

A novel near-zero-discharge recirculating aquaculture system was successfully set up and ran for six months or above. A uniquely designed and 3D printed poly (lactic acid) (PLA) structure was applied as carbon source. The system achieved over 50 % daily nitrogen removal capability and maintained a low NO3-N level of <0.5 mg/L. Steady water quality was observed throughout the experiment period. Microbial distribution was studied and top abundant microorganisms and their general functions in carbon and nitrogen utilization were discussed. Denitrification and L-glutamate formation were identified as two main nitrogen pathways. The cooccurrence network connecting various genera and multiple functions was revealed. Subtilisin was one important PLA degrading enzymes in the system.

RESUMO

The manipulation and metrology of light beams are pivotal for optical science and applications. In particular, achieving ultrahigh precision in the measurement of light beam rotations has been a long-standing challenge. Instead of using quantum probes like entangled photons, we address this challenge by incorporating a quantum strategy called "indefinite time direction" into the parameterizing process of quantum parameter estimation. Leveraging this quantum property of the parameterizing dynamics allows us to maximize the utilization of orbital angular momentum resources for measuring ultrasmall angular rotations of beam profile. Notably, a nanoradian-scale precision of light rotation measurement is lastly achieved in the experiment, which is the highest precision by far to our best knowledge. Furthermore, this scheme holds promise in various optical applications due to the diverse range of manipulable resources offered by photons.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) quantitative analysis parameters combined with shear wave elastography (SWE) quantitative parameters in the differentiation of benign and malignant ACR TI-RADS category 4 thyroid nodules and to provide a more effective reference for clinical work. METHODS: We analyzed 187 category 4 nodules, including 132 nodules in the development cohort and 55 nodules in the validation cohort, divided the development cohort into benign and malignant groups, and analyzed the differences in all CEUS and SWE quantitative parameters between the two groups. We selected the highest AUC of the two parameters, performed binary logistic regression analysis with the ACR TI-RADS score and constructed a diagnostic model. ROC curves were applied to evaluate their diagnostic efficacy. RESULTS: 1) The diagnostic model had an AUC of 0.926, sensitivity of 87.5%, specificity of 86.8%, diagnostic threshold of 3, accuracy of 87.12%, positive predictive value of 86.15%, and negative predictive value of 88.06%. 2) The diagnostic model had an AUC of 0.890 in the validation cohort, sensitivity of 81.5%, specificity of 79.6%, and accuracy of 80.00%. CONCLUSION: The combined multiparameter construction of the nodule diagnostic model can effectively improve the diagnostic efficacy of 4 types of thyroid nodules and provide a new reference index for clinical diagnostic work.
