RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to study the primary risk factors for the long-term trends of mortality rates in ischemic stroke (IS) in China. METHODS: Using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) database, research was conducted on the 11 primary risk factors for the mortality rates of IS in China from 1990 to 2019. This study employed joinpoint regression software and the age-period-cohort method to evaluate the trends of mortality rates divided by age, period, and cohort over time. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) caused by a diet high in red meat and high body mass index in China showed an upward trend. ASMR increased first and then decreased due to smoking, diet high in sodium, particulate matter pollution, high fasting plasma glucose, and high systolic blood pressure. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), kidney dysfunction, low temperature, and lead exposure remained relatively stable during this period. In the 35-45 age group, the mortality rate of IS due to high LDL-C was up to about 60%, and smoking affected men more than women. Overall, high LDL-C, high systolic blood pressure, and particulate matter pollution were the most common risk factors in patients with IS. The risk of death rose with age. The period and cohort relative risks showed that metabolic risk factors had the greatest impact on the mortality of IS. CONCLUSION: Metabolic risk factors have become the primary risk factors for the ASMR of IS in China. Relevant authorities should pay attention to their long-term effects on IS. Effective public health policies and interventions should be implemented to reduce the burden of IS.

RESUMO

This study aimed to explore the regulatory effects and associated mechanisms of adiponectin on apoptosis and proliferation in the LN18 glioma cell line through the AMPK and Akt signaling pathways. Additionally, we sought to elucidate the impact of adiponectin on the chemosensitivity of the LN18 glioma cell line to temozolomide (TMZ). The proliferation rate of glioma cells treated with adiponectin was assessed using the cholecystokinin (CCK8) assay. The Western blot analysis was employed to assess the expression of p-Akt, p-AMPK, p-mTOR, cleaved caspase3, Bax, Cyclin D1, and Cyclin B1 following adiponectin treatment. Cell apoptosis was quantified using AnnexinV/PI flow cytometry, while changes in the cell cycle were detected using PI staining flow cytometry. The findings revealed that adiponectin upregulates p-AMPK expression and downregulates p-mTOR expression in the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, with no discernible effect on p-Akt expression. Moreover, adiponectin inhibits the proliferation rate of the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, enhances the expression of cleaved caspase3 and Bax, and significantly elevates the apoptosis rate, as evidenced by AnnexinV/PI flow cytometry. Adiponectin was observed to suppress the expression of Cyclin D1 and Cyclin B1, increase the number of cells in the G1 phase, and promote autophagy. Additionally, adiponectin augments the expression of Beclin1 and the ratio of LC3II/I in the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, while decreasing p62 expression. In conclusion, this study posits that adiponectin holds therapeutic promise for glioma treatment. Furthermore, adiponectin enhances the inhibitory effect of TMZ on the proliferation rate of LN18 cells when treated with 0.1 mM and 1 mM TMZ. These results collectively suggest that adiponectin impedes proliferation, encourages apoptosis and autophagy in the LN18 glioma cell line, and heightens its sensitivity to the chemotherapeutic drug TMZ.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The inflammatory nutritional status is widely associated with the long-term prognosis of non-fatal stroke. The objective of this study is to examine the correlation between the C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR), a new marker indicating both inflammatory and nutritional status, and the overall mortality rate among stroke patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database and corresponding public-use mortality data from the linked National Death Index (NDI). The study utilized maximally selected rank statistics to determine the optimal cutoff points for the CAR. Subsequently, participants were stratified into higher- and lower-CAR groups based on these cutoff points. The Kaplan-Meier survival method was used to study overall survival probability. Multivariable Cox proportional regression models were employed to calculate the Hazard Ratio (HR) and corresponding confidence interval (CI). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was applied to detect potential non-linear relationship between CAR and mortality risk. Furthermore, stratified and sensitive analyses were performed to examine the robustness and reliability of the results. The study, encompassing 1043 participants with an average age of 64.61 years, identified a cutoff value of 0.32 for CAR, with notable variances observed across gender and age cohorts. Over an average follow-up period of 116 months, 679 instances of all-cause mortality were documented. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis unveiled noteworthy disparities in survival probabilities between groups categorized by high and low CAR levels (p = 0.00081). Continuous CAR analysis consistently demonstrated a positive correlation between elevated CAR values and heightened risk (HR = 1.78 (1.36, 2.33)) of all-cause mortality among stroke patients. Similarly, individuals in the high CAR group exhibited adjusted HR of 1.34 (0.96, 1.89) for all-cause mortality compared to their low CAR counterparts. Subgroup and sensitive analysis consistently reinforced these findings. Smoothing curve fitting further validated CAR's significance as a prognostic indicator of all-cause mortality, indicating a linear relationship. CONCLUSION: Elevated CAR is associated with increased long-term risk of mortality for individuals who have experienced a stroke, suggesting that CAR could serve as a survival indicator.

RESUMO

Electrolyte modulation and electrode structure design are two common strategies to suppress dendrites growth on Li metal anode. In this work, a self-adaptive electrode construction method to suppress Li dendrites growth is reported, which merges the merits of electrolyte modulation and electrode structure design strategies. In detail, negatively charged titania nanosheets with densely packed nanopores on them are prepared. These holey nanosheets in the electrolyte move spontaneously onto the anode under electrical field, building a mesoporous structure on the electrode surface. The as-formed porous electrode has large surface area with good lithiophilicity, which can efficiently transfer lithium ion (Li+ ) inside the electrode, and induce the genuine lithium plating/stripping. Moreover, the negative charges and nanopores on the sheets can also regulate the lithium-ion flux to promote uniform deposition of Li metal. As a result, the symmetric and full cells using the holey titania nanosheets containing electrolyte, show much better performance than the ones using electrolyte without holey nanosheets inside. This work points out a new route for the practical applications of Li-metal batteries.

RESUMO

Using three-dimensional current collectors (3DCC) as frameworks for lithium metal anodes (LMAs) is a promising approach to inhibit dendrite growth. However, the intrinsically accumulated current density on the top surface and limited Li-ion transfer in the interior of 3DCC still lead to the formation of lithium dendrites, which can pose safety risks. In this study, it reports that gradient lithiophilic structures can induce uniform lithium deposition within the interior of the 3DCC, greatly suppressing dendrite formation, as confirmed by COMSOL simulations and experimental results. With this concept, a gradient-structured zinc oxide-loaded copper foam (GSZO-CF) is synthesized via an easy solution-combustion method at low cost. The resulting Li@GSZO-CF symmetric cells demonstrate stable cycling performance for over 800 cycles, with an ultra-deep capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 even under an ultra-high current density of 50 mA cm-2 , the top results reported in the literature. Moreover, when combined with a LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode under a low negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio of 2.9, the Li@GSZO-CF||LFP full cells exhibit stable performance for 200 cycles, with a discharge capacity of 130 mAh g-1 and retention of 85.5% at a charging/discharging rate of 1C. These findings suggest a promising strategy for the development of new-generation LMAs.

RESUMO

The fabrication of low-cost, effective, and highly integrated nanostructured materials through simple and reproducible methods for high-energy-density supercapacitors is highly desirable. Herein, an activated carbon cloth (ACC) is designed as the functional scaffold for supercapacitors and treated hydrothermally to deposit NiCo nanoneedles working as internal core, followed by a dip-dry coating of NiOOH nanoflakes core-shell and uniform hydrothermal deposition of CoMoO4 nanosheets serving as an external shell. The structured core-shell heterostructure ACC@NiCo@NiOOH@CoMoO4 electrode resulted in exceptional specific areal capacitance of 2920 mF cm-2 and exceptional cycling stability for 10 000 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated electrode is developed into an asymmetric supercapacitor which demonstrates excellent areal capacitance, energy density, and power density within the broad potential window of 1.7 V with a cycling life of 92.4% after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles, which reflects excellent cycle life. The distinctive core-shell structure, highly conductive substrate, and synergetic effect of coated material results in more electrochemical active sites and flanges for effective electrons and ion transportation. This unique technique provides a new perspective for cost-efficient supercapacitor applications.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between obesity and cognitive impairment (CI) is highly heterogeneous in previous studies, which may be due to insufficient consideration of anthropometric indicators and sex. This study compared the cross-sectional relationships among body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and CI among people aged ≥40 years, and sex-specific relationships were also considered. METHODS: This was a population-based cross-sectional study with a cluster sampling design. CI was defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination score lower than the cutoff value. Multivariate logistic regression was used. BMI and WHR were fitted as both restricted cubic splines and categorical data. Stratified analysis and interaction analysis were performed to explore the sex-specific relationship. RESULTS: A total of 1,792 subjects (40.5% male) were analyzed, and 230 were confirmed to have CI. The relationships among BMI, WHR, and CI were significant (poverall = 0.023, pnonlinear = 0.097; poverall = 0.017, pnonlinear = 0.078, respectively) but exhibited an opposite trend in the total population in the analyses with BMI and WHR as restricted cubic splines. Further categorical analyses showed that subjects with a BMI <23 kg/m2 tended to have a higher risk of CI than those with BMI ≥23 kg/m2 (16.2% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.017; OR = 1.366 [0.969-1.926], p = 0.075), and subjects with a WHR >0.92 had a significantly higher risk of CI than those with a WHR ≤0.92 (11.7% vs. 16.2%, p = 0.011; OR = 1.619 [1.161-2.258], p = 0.005). In addition, the relationship between a low BMI and CI was more significant in males (p = 0.034), while the relationship between a high WHR and CI was more significant in females (p = 0.002). Further studies are needed to confirm the sex differences because of the marginal significance result in the interaction analysis (p = 0.051 for interaction term BMI × sex; p = 0.056 for interaction term WHR × sex). CONCLUSION: The relationships among BMI, WHR, and CI exhibit an opposite trend. A low BMI or high WHR was positively associated with CI, which was more prominent in males for a low BMI and females for a high WHR.

RESUMO

Ischemic stroke is featured with high incidence, mortality, and disability. The aim of this study is to use Global Burden of Disease database to describe and compare the burden of ischemic stroke in mainland China and Taiwan province and to further predict the expected changes in the next 11 years using statistical modeling methods. Information on ischemic stroke incidence and mortality in China (mainland and Taiwan province) during 1990-2019 was obtained from the Global Burden of Disease database to analyze the effects of region, gender, and age on the incidence and mortality of ischemic stroke in China. The autoregressive integrated moving average model was used to predict the age-standardized incidence rate and age-standardized mortality rate of ischemic stroke in males and females in mainland China and Taiwan province in the next 11 years. The period from 1990 to 2019 witnessed an overall upward trend in the number of incidence and deaths in mainland China and Taiwan province. In 2019, there were nearly 2.87 million ischemic incidence cases with stroke in mainland China, with more female patients than male in the age group of over 60 years. Among the nearly 1.03 million deaths, the death toll of men under the age of 85 years was higher than that of women, while in Taiwan province, the number of incidence was 28 771, with more female patients of all ages than male. Among the 6788 deaths, the death toll of men under the age of 80 years was higher than that of women. In 2019, the age group with the highest number of patients in the two regions was 65-69 years, while the highest number of deaths was found in people aged 85 years and above. As our autoregressive integrated moving average model predicted, the age-standardized incidence rate value of ischemic stroke is expected to be 163.23/100 000 persons in mainland China by 2030, which would continue to increase, while the age-standardized mortality rate value of ischemic stroke is expected to be 16.41/100 000 persons in Taiwan province by 2030, which showed a decreasing trend. Disease burden of ischemic stroke is still increasing in mainland China and Taiwan province, and health resources should be deployed to implement effective prevention and control strategies, taking into account region, gender, and age.

RESUMO

Although the Chinese government has conducted much work in recent years to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication continues to occur frequently in many rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This may indicate that sediment is a major source rather than a sink for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). To clarify the endogenous mechanisms of eutrophication in coastal river basins, the eutrophication status, physicochemical properties, and bacterial parameters of overlying waters and sediments in the catchment (CA), estuarine (EA), and offshore (OA) areas in the Duliujian River Basin of Bohai Bay were investigated. The results showed that the eutrophication index (EI) of CA, EA, and OA were 62.71, 57.86, and 36.51, respectively. The EI was more sensitive to increases in P (slope = 3.887) than to increases in N (slope = 0.734) of the overlying water, indicating that P is the main factor driving eutrophication in the coastal river basin. However, a nonlinear relationship was found between P in sediments and overlying waters, suggesting that bacterial mediation may occur during P release. As speculated in this study, P in the overlying water increased more quickly than N with increasing bacterial diversity and metabolic abundance, indicating that the allometric release of N and P mediated by bacteria increases the risk of eutrophication. Redundancy analysis showed that organic matter and total N in sediment have positive effects on bacterial communities, which explains 21.8% and 23.7% variation in bacterial diversity, and explains 31.3% and 7.1% variation in bacterial metabolism. This also suggests that the accumulation of N in the sediment promotes the release of P and further aggravates the eutrophication of water. Therefore, simultaneous control of N and P is necessary to control water eutrophication in coastal river basins.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate chest computed tomography (CT) compared to intracavitary electrocardiogram (ECG) in predicting the length of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement and analyzing the accuracy of the positioning methods. METHODS: This study included a total number of 436 patients who underwent PICC placement. The patients enrolled were randomly divided into two groups: ECG group (n = 218, received IC-ECG) and chest CT group (n = 218, received chest CT). The tip length of the catheter in the superior vena cava, the measured length of the catheter and the actual insertion length of the catheter were observed and recorded in the two groups. RESULTS: The best catheterization rate of tip positioning and the one-time placement rate of tip positioning in ECG group were significantly higher than that in the chest CT group (all P < 0.05). The comfort level and satisfaction rate in ECG group was significantly higher than that of chest CT group (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Accurate catheterization length could be achieved by both chest CT and intracavitary electrocardiogram guidance in the process of predicting PICC placement length. However, IC-ECG guided procedure was more worthy of promotion in clinic.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of cranial-cervical aneurysms with stent-graft. METHODS: Clinical data of 20 patients with cranial-cervical aneurysm treated with stent-graft in Department of Neurosurgery, Tangdu Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University from November 2006 to November 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 15 male and 5 female patients with a mean age of 40 years (ranging from 22 to 67 years). There were 10 spontaneous cases, 5 trauma history cases and 5 surgery history cases. Postoperative follow-up were made by telephone, CT angiography or digital subtraction angiography, evaluating therapeutic effect. RESULTS: Twenty-four stent-grafts placement were carried out in 20 patients and all of them were successfully deployed in the parent artery. Intraoperative stent malapposition induced endoleak occurred in 3 cases, incomplete coverage of distal stent segment in 2 cases, acute thrombosis in 1 case and vessel lesion in 1 case. Eighteen cases were radiographically cured while the other 2 cases improved through additional stent placement, coil embolization or artery thrombolysis. Clinical symptoms of post-operative patients were improved to varying degrees. Follow-up of 1 to 96 months (average of 19 months) were accomplished. Delayed parent artery occlusion were encountered in 2 cases while endoleak still existed in 1 case. CONCLUSION: Application of stent-graft for cranial-cervical aneurysms is safe and effective and the short-term follow-up results are satisfied.

RESUMO

SiO4 tetrahedra in certain sodium silicophosphate glasses can be transformed into SiO6 octahedra that determine the macroscopic properties of silicophosphate glasses to a large extent. In this study, we develop the quantitative evolution rule of each network former. In addition, based on the underlying structure and topology, temperature-dependent topological constrain theory is used to elucidate the composition dependence of glass transition temperature and hardness. The properties of sodium silicophosphate glasses have been accurately predicted. These understandings will help us design new type of silicophosphate glasses containing unique SiO6 octahedra.

RESUMO

Epiphylls widely colonize vascular leaves in moist tropical forests. Understanding the effects of epiphylls on leaf traits of host plants is critical for understanding ecological function of epiphylls. A study was conducted in a rain forest to investigate leaf traits of the host plants Photinia prunifolia colonized with epiphyllous liverworts and foliicolous lichens as well as those of uncolonized leaves. Our results found that the colonization of lichens significantly decreased leaf water content (LWC), chlorophyll (Chl) a and a + b content, and Chl a/b of P. prunifolia but increased Chl b content, while that of liverworts did not affect them as a whole. The variations of net photosynthetic rates (P n ) among host leaves colonized with different coverage of lichens before or after removal treatment (a treatment to remove epiphylls from leaf surface) were greater than that colonized with liverworts. The full cover of lichens induced an increase of light compensation point (LCP) by 21% and a decrease of light saturation point (LSP) by 54% for their host leaves, whereas that of liverworts displayed contrary effects. Compared with the colonization of liverworts, lichens exhibited more negative effects on the leaf traits of P. prunifolia in different stages of colonization. The results suggest that the responses of host leaf traits to epiphylls are affected by the epiphyllous groups and coverage, which are also crucial factors in assessing ecofunctions of epiphylls in tropical forests.

RESUMO

Saline-alkali land, as one of the farmland problems that seriously threatens grain yield in the 21st century, is widely distributed and has great potential for development. Biochar is a relatively efficient novel soil amendment, which can play an important role in alleviating the soil acid-base barrier, soil pollution control, carbon sequestration, and fertilizer slow release and has a great prospect in promoting sustainable agricultural development. In recent years, the research and application of biochar to improve saline-alkali soil have attracted much attention. However, due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the structural components of biochar, the improvement effect of biochar on saline-alkali soil is highly uncertain, and there is also a lack of systematic summary and in-depth discussion of the key mechanisms, which limits the further popularization and application of biochar technology in the improvement of saline-alkali soil. This study comprehensively analyzed the effects of biochar on physicochemical properties, nutrient availability, and biological characteristics of saline-alkali soil; summarized the improvement effects of biochar and modified biochar on saline-alkali soil and their effects on quality and efficiency; and elucidated the possible mechanism of biochar in the improvement of saline-alkali soil. The future research prospect of biochar was discussed in order to provide reference for further research and development of green, efficient, and accurate improvement technology of biochar in saline-alkali soil and its popularization and application.

RESUMO

Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) are of great importance to the evolution of soil quality. The distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon (SOC), easily oxidizable organic carbon (EOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC) were investigated in the 0-50 cm soil layer of the Phragmites australis, Suaeda salsa, and Tamarix chinensis communities of the supratidal zone in the Yellow River Delta as the research subjects. Then, the composition and sources of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) were analyzed based on the UV-vis spectroscopy, three-dimensional excitation emission matrix spectroscopy, and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Finally, the key factors affecting the characteristics of soil organic carbon and DOM fractions of different plant communities were finally revealed in combination with the physicochemical properties of the soil. The results showed that: ① Comparing different communities, the S. salsa community had the highest ω(SOC) at 7.53 g·kg-1, the T. chinensis community had the highest ω(DOC) at 0.98 g·kg-1, and the P. australis community had significantly higher ω(EOC) and ω(POC) than those of the S. salsa and T. chinensis communities at 1.47 g·kg-1 and 0.65 g·kg-1, respectively. The vertical distribution showed a tendency to decrease with deeper soil layers, except for POC concentration. ② The main components of soil DOM of the P. australis, S. salsa, and T. chinensis communities were humus, protein-like substances, and fulvic acid-like substances, of which exogenous components accounted for 55.80%, 56.41%, and 52.81% in the above communities, respectively. ③ Comparing different communities, the humification degree of the P. australis community was significantly higher than that of the S. salsa and T. chinensi communities, but its aromaticity and proportion of biological sources were significantly lower than those of the T. chinensi community. On the vertical profile of the soil, DOM aromaticity and humification degree gradually increased with the deepening of the soil layer, and the deeper soils were mainly dominated by small molecular weight DOM with a lower proportion of hydrophobic fraction. ④ Redundant analysis showed that N (P<0.01), NO2--N (P<0.01), and NH4+-N (P<0.05) were the key factors affecting the changes in soil organic carbon and DOM fractions.

RESUMO

Objectives: We explored the relationship between blood pressure variability (BPV) during craniotomy aneurysm clipping and short-term prognosis in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage to provide a new method to improve prognosis of these patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the differences between patient groups with favorable modified Rankin Scale (mRS ≤ 2) and unfavorable (mRS > 2) prognosis, and examined the association between intraoperative BPV and short-term prognosis. Results: The intraoperative maximum systolic blood pressure (SBPmax, p = 0.005) and the coefficient of variation of diastolic blood pressure (DBPCV, p = 0.029) were significantly higher in the favorable prognosis group. SBPmax (OR 0.88, 95%CI 0.80-0.98) and Neu% (OR 1.22, 95%CI 1.03-1.46) were independent influence factors on prognosis. Patients with higher standard deviations of SBP (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030), DBP (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030), and DBPCV (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030) had more favorable prognosis. Conclusion: Higher SBPmax (≤180 mmHg) during the clipping is an independent protective factor for a 90-day prognosis. These results highlight the importance of blood pressure (BP) control for improved prognosis; higher short-term BPV during clipping may be a precondition for a favorable prognosis.

RESUMO

Inland waters (IW), estuarine areas (EA), and offshore areas (OA) function as aquatic systems in which the transport of carbon components results in the release of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Interconnected subsystems exhibit a greater greenhouse effect than individual systems. Despite this, there is a lack of research on how carbon loading and its components impact GHG emissions in various aquatic systems. In this study, we analyzed 430 aquatic sites to explore trade-off mechanisms among dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and GHGs. The results revealed that IW emerged as the most significant GHG source, possessing a comprehensive global warming potential (GWP) of 0.78 ± 0.08 (10-2 Pg CO2-ep ha-1 year-1) for combined carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. This surpassed the cumulative potentials of EA and OA (0.35 ± 0.05 (10-2 Pg CO2-ep ha-1 year-1)). Additionally, structural equation modeling indicated that GHG emissions resulted from a combination of carbon component loading and environmental factors. DOC exhibited a positive correlation with GWPs when influenced by biodegradable DOC. Total alkalinity and pH influenced DIC, leading to elevated pCO2 in aquatic systems, thereby enhancing GWPs. Predictive modeling using backpropagation artificial neural networks (BP-ANN) for GWPs, incorporating carbon components and environmental factors, demonstrated a good fit (R2 = 0.6078, RMSEaverage = 0.069, p > 0.05) between observed and predicted values. Enhancing the estimation of aquatic region feedback to GHG changes was achieved by incorporating corresponding water quality parameters. In summary, this study underscores the pivotal role of carbon components and environmental factors in aquatic regions for GHG emissions. The application of BP-ANN to estimate greenhouse effects from aquatic regions is highlighted, providing theoretical and experimental support for future advancements in monitoring and developing policies concerning the influence of water quality on GHG emissions.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of using a newly formulated magnesium-rich artificial cerebrospinal fluid (MACSF) as an alternative to normal saline (NS) for intraoperative irrigation during aneurysm clipping in improving the prognosis of patients with Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods: Patients with aSAH who underwent intraoperative irrigation with MACSF or NS during the clipping in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University from March 2019 to March 2022 were selected as MACSF group and NS group, respectively. The primary prognostic indicators were the incidence of favorable outcomes (mRS 0-2). The secondary outcome measures included cerebral vasospasm (CVS), mortality, total hospital stay, and intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Safety was evaluated based on the occurrence rates of hypermagnesemia, meningitis, and hydrocephalus. Results: Overall, 34 and 37 patients were enrolled in the MACSF and NS groups, respectively. At 90 days after aSAH onset, the proportion of favorable prognosis in the MACSF group was significantly higher than that in the NS group (p = 0.035). The incidence of CVS within 14 days after surgery was significantly lower in the MACSF group than that in the NS group (p = 0.026). The mortality rate in the MACSF group was significantly lower than in the NS group (p = 0.048). The median lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.008) and ICU stay (p = 0.018) were significantly shorter in the MACSF group than in the NS group. No significant differences were observed in safety measures. Conclusion: Using MACSF as an irrigation fluid for aneurysm clipping can significantly improve the 90-day prognosis of patients with aSAH, which may be related to the reduced incidence of CVS. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities and silent vascular brain injury as defined by cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a stroke-free community-based population. METHODS: A total of 5888 participants were studied from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a prospective cohort of community-living older adults. Standard 12-lead ECGs measured prior to MRI scan were used. MRI scans were conducted at years 4-6 and 10-11. The primary outcome was presence of incident covert brain infarcts (CBIs) on the 2nd MRI examination, excluding previous CBIs and stroke occurrence. Secondary outcomes included white matter, ventricular, and sulcal atrophy on the 1st MRI. Logistic and multiple linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between ECG findings and silent vascular brain injury. RESULTS: Left axis deviation before MRI scan was related to presence of incident CBIs (odds ratio [OR]: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.01-2.08, p = .047). A long QT interval was associated with severe white matter hyperintensity (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.04-1.77, p = .024). Minor Q and QS waves with ST-T abnormalities were positively related to sulcal atrophy (ß: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.06-0.81, p = .023). CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that ECG abnormalities were related to presence of CBIs, white matter hyperintensity, and sulcal atrophy on MRI in a stroke-free relderly population. Specifically, those with left axis deviation had an increased risk of presence of CBIs.
