OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR) and its risk factors in very preterm infants (VPIs) during hospitalization in China. METHODS: A prospective multicenter study was performed on the medical data of 2 514 VPIs who were hospitalized in the department of neonatology in 28 hospitals from 7 areas of China between September 2019 and December 2020. According to the presence or absence of EUGR based on the evaluation of body weight at the corrected gestational age of 36 weeks or at discharge, the VPIs were classified to two groups: EUGR group (n=1 189) and non-EUGR (n=1 325). The clinical features were compared between the two groups, and the incidence of EUGR and risk factors for EUGR were examined. RESULTS: The incidence of EUGR was 47.30% (1 189/2 514) evaluated by weight. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher weight growth velocity after regaining birth weight and higher cumulative calorie intake during the first week of hospitalization were protective factors against EUGR (P<0.05), while small-for-gestational-age birth, prolonged time to the initiation of total enteral feeding, prolonged cumulative fasting time, lower breast milk intake before starting human milk fortifiers, prolonged time to the initiation of full fortified feeding, and moderate-to-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia were risk factors for EUGR (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is crucial to reduce the incidence of EUGR by achieving total enteral feeding as early as possible, strengthening breastfeeding, increasing calorie intake in the first week after birth, improving the velocity of weight gain, and preventing moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia in VPIs.

BACKGROUND: The R1441G mutation in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene results in late-onset Parkinson's disease (PD). Peripheral inflammation and gut microbiota are closely associated with the pathogenesis of PD. Chronic periodontitis is a common type of peripheral inflammation, which is associated with PD. Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), the most common bacterium causing chronic periodontitis, can cause alteration of gut microbiota. It is not known whether Pg-induced dysbiosis plays a role in the pathophysiology of PD. METHODS: In this study, live Pg were orally administrated to animals, three times a week for 1 month. Pg-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to stimulate mononuclear cells in vitro. The effects of oral Pg administration on the gut and brain were evaluated through behaviors, morphology, and cytokine expression. RESULTS: Dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra were reduced, and activated microglial cells were increased in R1441G mice given oral Pg. In addition, an increase in mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) as well as protein level of α-synuclein together with a decrease in zonula occludens-1 (Zo-1) was detected in the colon in Pg-treated R1441G mice. Furthermore, serum interleukin-17A (IL-17A) and brain IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) were increased in Pg-treated R1441G mice. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that oral Pg-induced inflammation may play an important role in the pathophysiology of LRRK2-associated PD.

For the nuclear industry, uranium is not only an important strategic resource but also a serious global contaminant with radiotoxicity and high chemotoxicity. It is very important to efficiently capture uranium from complex aqueous solutions for further treatment and disposal of nuclear wastes. Herein, we first demonstrate the suitability of a three-dimensional (3D) water-stable K+-exchanged zeolitic sulfide, namely K@GaSnS-1, for the remediation of radioactive and toxic uranium by ion exchange. In comparison to the pristine compound GaSnS-1, the K+-activated porous sulfide K@GaSnS-1 exhibits faster [UO2]2+ ion uptake kinetics, following the pseudo-second-order adsorption model. Further studies indicate that K@GaSnS-1 shows high exchange capacity (qmU = 147.6 mg/g) and wide pH resistance (pH 2.75-10.87). In particular, it can efficiently capture [UO2]2+ ion even when excessive amounts of Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ ions are present. The highest distribution coefficient value Kd, signifying the affinity and selectivity for [UO2]2+ ion, reaches as high as 1.24 × 104 mL/g. More importantly, the uranium in corresponding exchanged samples can be facilely and effectively eluted by a low-cost and eco-friendly method. These merits of K@GaSnS-1 make it promising for the effective and selective removal of uranium from complex contaminated water.

Atmosphere pressure uniform plasma has the broad application prospect in the industrial field. Using hollow needle cathode-plate anode device excited by direct-current voltage, a uniform and stable glow discharge is generated at atmospheric pressure in ambient air with argon used as working gas. The influence of the experimental parameters (including gas flow rate and the gas gap width) on discharge has been investigated by optical method. It can be found that a glow-discharge plasma column can bridge the two electrodes. The plasma column is uniform, and no filaments can be discerned. Near the plate electrode, the diameter of the plasma column is largest of all positions. The maximal diameter of the plasma column increases with increasing the discharge current or the gas flow rate. Through electrical method, the voltage-current characteristic has been investigated. It has been found that the discharge voltage decreases with increasing the current which is similar with the characteristic of glow discharge in low pressure. It increases with increasing the gas gap width or the gas flow rate. By analyzing the optical emission spectrum scanning from 330 to 450 nm emitted from the direct-current glow discharge, the molecular vibrational temperature and the intensity ratio of spectral lines I391.4/I337.1 have been investigated as functions of the gas flow rate and gas gap width. Results indicate that both the vibrational temperature and the intensity ratio of spectral lines I391.4/I337.1 decrease with increasing the gas flow rate or the gas gap width. In addition, the molecular vibrational temperature and the intensity ratio of spectral lines I391.4/I337.1 have been investigated in spatial resolution along the direction of gas flow (plasma column axial), and give a qualitative analysis as well. It is found that the vibrational temperature and the average electron energy increase with increasing the distance from the hollow needle cathode. These results are important to the industrial applications of glow discharge.

PURPOSE: A key determinant of long jump performance is the ability to increase the vertical velocity of the center of mass (COM) while minimizing the loss in forward velocity (running speed) during the take-off phase, but exactly how this occurs is not fully understood. We combined a three-dimensional musculoskeletal model of the body with dynamic optimization theory to simulate the biomechanics of the long jump take-off and determine the contributions of the individual leg muscles to jump performance. METHODS: The body was modeled as a 29-degree-of-freedom skeleton actuated by a combination of muscles and net joint torques. A dynamic optimization problem was solved to reproduce full-body motion and ground-force data recorded from experienced subelite jumpers. The optimization solution then was analyzed to determine each muscle's contribution to the ground-force impulse and hence the change in velocity of the COM during the take-off phase. RESULTS: The hip, knee, and ankle extensors dominated the change in velocity of the COM during take-off. Vasti (VAS) generated the highest support impulse and contributed one-third (33%) of the increase in vertical COM velocity generated by all the muscles. Soleus (SOL) and gluteus maximus (GMAX) also developed substantial support impulses and contributed 24% and 16% of the increase in vertical COM velocity, respectively. VAS also generated the highest braking impulse and contributed approximately one-half (55%) of the loss in forward COM velocity generated by all the muscles, whereas SOL and GMAX made much smaller contributions (12% and 7%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: VAS, SOL, and GMAX contributed nearly three-quarters (73%) of the increase in vertical COM velocity at take-off, suggesting that these muscles ought to be prioritized in strength training programs aimed at improving long jump performance.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate protective effect of Cordyceps sinensis (CS) through autophagy-associated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway in acute kidney injury (AKI)-induced acute lung injury (ALI). METHODS: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups according to a random number table, including the normal saline (NS)-treated sham group (sham group), NS-treated ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) group (IRI group), and low- (5 g/kg·d) and high-dose (10 g/kg·d) CS-treated IRI groups (CS1 and CS2 groups), 12 rats in each group. Nephrectomy of the right kidney was performed on the IRI rat model that was subjected to 60 min of left renal pedicle occlusion followed by 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of reperfusion. The wet-to-dry (W/D) ratio of lung, levels of serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin- ß and tumor necrosis factor- α, and biomarkers of oxidative stress such as superoxide dismutase, malonaldehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), were assayed. Histological examinations were conducted to determine damage of tissues in the kidney and lung. The protein expressions of light chain 3 II/light chain 3 I (LC3-II/LC3-I), uncoordinated-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1), P62, AMPK and mTOR were measured by Western blot and immunohistochemistry, respectively. RESULTS: The renal IRI induced pulmonary injury following AKI, resulting in significant increases in W/D ratio of lung, and the levels of Scr, BUN, inflammatory cytokines, MDA and MPO (P<0.01); all of these were reduced in the CS groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the IRI groups, the expression levels of P62 and mTOR were significantly lower (P<0.05 or P<0.01), while those of LC3-II/LC3-I, ULK1, and AMPK were significantly higher in the CS2 group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION: CS had a potential in treating lung injury following renal IRI through activation of the autophagy-related AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway in AKI-induced ALI.

Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is an invasive plant with allergenic pollen. Due to environmental changes, ragweed pollen (RWP) airborne concentrations are predicted to quadruple in Europe by 2050 and more than double allergic sensitization of Europeans by 2060. We developed an experimental RWP model of allergy in BALB/c mice to evaluate how the number of RWP and how RWP collected from different geographical environments influence disease. We administered RWP six times over 3 weeks intranasally to the mice and then evaluated disease parameters 72 h later or allowed the mice to recover for at least 90 days before rechallenging them with RWP to elicit a disease relapse. Doses over 300 pollen grains induced lung eosinophilia. Higher doses of 3,000 and 30,000 pollen grains increased both eosinophils and neutrophils and induced disease relapses. RWP harvested from diverse geographical regions induced a spectrum of allergic lung disease from mild inflammation to moderate eosinophilic and severe mixed eosinophilic-neutrophilic lung infiltrates. After a recovery period, mice rechallenged with pollen developed a robust disease relapse. We found no correlation between Amb a 1 content, the major immunodominant allergen, endotoxin content, or RWP structure with disease severity. These results demonstrate that there is an environmental impact on RWP with clinical consequences that may underlie the increasing sensitization rates and the severity of pollen-induced disease exacerbation in patients. The multitude of diverse environmental factors governing distinctive patterns of disease induced by RWP remains unclear. Further studies are necessary to elucidate how the environment influences the complex interaction between RWP and human health.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are covalent changes occurring on amino acid side chains of proteins and yet are neglected structural and functional aspects of protein architecture. The objective was to detect differences in PTM profiles that take place after roasting using open PTM search. We conducted a bottom-up proteomic study to investigate the impact of peanut roasting on readily soluble allergens and their PTM profiles. Proteomic PTM profiling of certain modifications was confirmed by Western blotting with a series of PTM-specific antibodies. In addition to inducing protein aggregation and denaturation, roasting may facilitate change in their PTM pattern and relative profiling. We have shown that Ara h 1 is the most modified major allergen in both samples in terms of modification versatility and extent. The most frequent PTM was methionine oxidation, especially in roasted samples. PTMs uniquely found in roasted samples were hydroxylation (Trp), formylation (Arg/Lys), and oxidation or hydroxylation (Asn). Raw and roasted peanut extracts did not differ in the binding of IgE from the serum of peanut-sensitised individuals done by ELISA. This study provides a better understanding of how roasting impacts the PTM profile of major peanut allergens and provides a good foundation for further exploration of PTMs.

Solanum lyratum Thunb (Solanaceae) has been widely used for cancer as a folk remedy in Chinese traditional medicine. In this study, the main active fraction n-butanol extract from S. lyratum (BESL) was evaluated for the therapeutic efficacies on mice transplantable tumor and immunomodulatory potentials on the immune response in tumor-bearing mice. The effects of BESL on the growth of mouse transplantable S180 sarcoma, splenocyte proliferation, the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), production of cytokines from splenocytes, and serum antigen-specific antibody levels in S180-bearing mice were measured. BESL could not only significantly inhibit the growth of S180 sarcoma transplanted in mice, but also remarkably promote splenocytes proliferation, NK cell and CTL activity, interleukin-2 and interferon-γ production from splenocytes, and serum antigen-specific antibody levels in tumor-bearing mice (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, or P <0.001). The results suggested that BESL might exhibit antitumor activity by improving immune response, and it could act as antitumor agent with immunomodulatory activity. This study provided evidence to understand the therapeutic effects of S. lyratum for treatment of cancer and a natural product to further researches to be developed as a cancer chemopreventive agent.

Fabrication and surface plasmon properties of gold nanostructures consisting of periodic arrays of disk trimers are reported. Using electron beam lithography, disk diameters as small as 96 nm and gaps between disks as narrow as 10 nm have been achieved with an unprecedented degree of control and reproducibility. The disk trimers exhibit intense visible and infrared surface plasmon resonances which are studied as a function of the disk diameter and of the pitch between trimers. Based on simulations of the optical extinction spectra and of the electric near-field intensity maps, the resonances are assigned to a single trimer response and to collective surface plasmon excitations involving electromagnetic interaction between the trimers. The sensing properties of the disk trimers are investigated using various coating media. The reported results demonstrate the possible use of gold disk trimers for dual wavelength chemical sensing.

Ommochrome is the major source for eye coloration of all insect species so far examined. Phenoxazinone synthetase (PHS) has always been regarded as the terminal step enzyme for ommochrome formation, which is encoded by cardinal or karmoisin genes. Our previous study indicated that the karmoisin ortholog gene (Nl-karmoisin) product in the brown planthopper (BPH) was a monocarboxylate transporter, while not a PHS. Here, based on full-length complementary DNA, the cardinal ortholog gene in BPH (Nl-cardinal) product was predicted to be a haem peroxidase rather than a PHS. We suggest for the first time that neither karmoisin nor cardinal encodes the PHS, but whether PHS participates in BPH eye pigmentation needs further research. Nymphal RNA interference (RNAi) experiments showed that knockdown Nl-cardinal transcript led the BPH ocelli and compound eye to color change from brown to red, while knockdown Nl-karmoisin only made the ocelli present the red phenotype. Notably, not only the Nl-cardinal transcript, dscd injection (Nl-cardinal targeting double-stranded DNA (dsRNA)) also significantly reduced the Nl-karmoisin transcript by 33.7%, while dska (Nl-karmoisin targeting dsRNA) injection did not significantly change the Nl-cardinal transcript. Considering the above RNAi and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results, we propose that Nl-cardinal plays a more important role in ommochrome synthesis than Nl-karmoisin, and it may be an upstream gene of Nl-karmoisin. The present study suggested that both karmoisin and cardinal ortholog genes play a role in ommochrome synthesis in a hemimetabolous insect.

Objective Clinical sepsis-associated biomarkers were utilized in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) septic mouse model to provide a reference for investigating pathophysiological mechanisms and evaluating novel therapeutic interventions for sepsis. Methods Sepsis in mice was induced by CLP, and clinical biomarkers were evaluated (survival rate, blood physiological and biochemical indices, cytokines, hepatorenal function parameters, and blood coagulation). Results The mortality rate was >70%. The body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate decreased within 48 h. Low lactic acid was found at 8 h. The CLP mice showed typical inflammatory symptoms with decreased white blood cells and procalcitonin and increased levels of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1ß, and MIP-2. The platelet count and activated partial thromboplastin time significantly decreased, and the prothrombin time and prothrombin time-international normalized ratio markedly increased. Phenotypes of multiple organ dysfunction were found in the CLP model, including increased liver alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase; significantly reduced total protein, globulin, and serum albumin; increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine; and decreased blood glucose. Conclusion The clinical features of the CLP mouse model were similar to those of human patients with sepsis.

Geographical origin of medical herbs is an important factor of the quality of many traditional Chinese herbal medicines. The objective of the present study is to investigate whether NIR spectroscopy coupled with pattern recognition techniques could effectively discriminate geographical origins of medical herbs. Nearest neighbor method (NNM) and a SVM-based multiclass classifier were employed to discriminate 269 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (ADR) samples from 4 provinces and 380 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (SMR) samples from 6 provinces in China. The multiclass classifier achieves leave-one-out cross-validation accuracy of 99% for (ADR) and 95% (SMR). This classification scheme can be a highly accurate approach to the rapid and nondestructive discrimination of medical herbs of different origins.

The emission spectrum and the discharge current waveform of argon dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure were measured when the filaments self-organized in hexagon pattern by using a specially designed experimental setup. Electron excitation temperature of hexagon pattern was calculated using intensity ratio method. It was found that the electron excitation temperature is higher as the frequency of feeding voltage increases. And the temporal correlation among all micro-discharge channels also becomes higher as the frequency of feeding voltage increases. This work gives useful reference for studying pattern formation dynamics.

Geochemical dynamics of cave water were monitored to unveil its seasonal variation and controlling factors from December 2011 to May 2013 in Baojinggong cave, north of Guangdong Province. Concentrations of elements such as Ba, Sr, Ca and Mg of three drips in the cave were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) All these elements of three drips displayed significant seasonal variations, but the trends of seasonal variation of different elements or different drips were not the same, which reflected that each element in different drips might be controlled by different effects; (2) The low element contents of Drip1 and Drip2 during the heavy rainfall month showed that heavy rainfall could dilute the concentrations of elements; (3) Mg/Ca had a positive relationship with Sr/Ca ratio in three drips, and was higher in dry season and lower in rainy season. It implied that the two proxies might be mainly controlled by precipitation, karst water source, leaching effect and prior calcite precipitation (PCP), and reflected the climate change.

This article conceptualized a therapeutic game theory to discuss the pickings process of a preschool sexually violated victim with respect to nursing care delivery in our department of emergency medicine. In cooperation with the victim, we offered support to prevent her from fearing loss of her capacity for self-defense when facing a similar scenario. The overall exercise included observation time, a return outpatient visit and a follow-up phone interview. By using observation, role-play, leading drawing and interviews, we used Piaget's Cognitive Child Development model and game therapy theory to reduce the victim's sense of fear and shame, inducing the victim to eliminate her confusion by talking and to complete the whole pickings process.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical curative effects between 89Sr and its combination with the Guliu recipe (GLR, a Chinese herbal medicine) in treating multiple bone metastatic tumor of mammary cancer (MBM-MC). METHODS: By adopting the random sampling and grouping method, 89Sr alone (Sr) and 89Sr combined with CHM (Sr-GLR) were used in treating 86 and 40 patients with MBM-MC respectively. The efficacy of therapy were appraised according to the degree of ostalgia relieving and quality of life (QOF) in patients, and the effect of treatment on focal bone metabolism and bone marrow hematopoietic function were compared. RESULTS: The effective rate of Sr and Sr-GLR in relieving ostalgia was 83.72% and 95.00%, respectively (P > 0.05), the QOF improving and stabilizing rate of them 80.23% and 95.00% (P < 0.05), the effective rate on focal bone metabolism 59.30% and 52.50% (P > 0.05) and their hemo-toxicity 28.00% and 30.00% (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Sr-GLR is a combination therapy in treating MBM-MC with good effect, it could raise the patient's QOF, enhance the ostalgia relieving effect without increasing the hemo-toxicity of treatment.
