RESUMO

Nitrogen (N) is an essential factor for limiting crop yields, and cultivation of crops with low nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) exhibits increasing environmental and ecological risks. Hence, it is crucial to mine valuable NUE improvement genes, which is very important to develop and breed new crop varieties with high NUE in sustainable agriculture system. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) and genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis are the most common methods for dissecting genetic variations underlying complex traits. In addition, with the advancement of biotechnology, multi-omics technologies can be used to accelerate the process of exploring genetic variations. In this study, we integrate the substantial data of QTLs, quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) from GWAS, and multi-omics data including transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome and further analyze their interactions to predict some NUE-related candidate genes. We also provide the genic resources for NUE improvement among maize, rice, wheat, and sorghum by homologous alignment and collinearity analysis. Furthermore, we propose to utilize the knowledge gained from classical cases to provide the frameworks for improving NUE and breeding N-efficient varieties through integrated genomics, systems biology, and modern breeding technologies.

Paraspeckles (PS) are nuclear structures scaffolded by the long noncoding RNA NEAT1 and protein components such as NONO and SFPQ. We previously found that the upregulation of RNA N6-methyl-adenosine (m6A) demethylase ALKBH5 facilitates hypoxia-induced paraspeckle assembly through erasing m6A marks on NEAT1, thus stabilizing it. However, it remains unclear how these processes are spatiotemporally coordinated. Here we discover that ALKBH5 specifically binds to proteins in PS and forms phase-separated droplets that are incorporated into PS through its C-terminal intrinsically disordered region (cIDR). Upon exposure to hypoxia, rapid ALKBH5 condensation in PS induces m6A demethylation of NEAT1, which further facilitates PS formation before the upregulation of ALKBH5 expression. In cells expressing ALKBH5 lacking cIDR, PS fail to be formed in response to hypoxia, accompanied with insufficient m6A demethylation of NEAT1 and its destabilization. We also demonstrate that ALKBH5-cIDR is indispensable for hypoxia-induced effects such as cancer cell invasion. Therefore, our study has identified the role of ALKBH5 in phase separation as the molecular basis of the positive feedback loop for PS formation between ALKBH5 incorporation into PS and NEAT1 stabilization.

Natural killer (NK) cells were reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary antiphospholipid syndrome (pAPS). Immunosuppressive receptor T-cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT) and activating receptor cluster of differentiation 226 (CD226) are specifically expressed on NK cells with competitive functions. This study aims to investigate the expression diversities of CD226/TIGIT on NK subsets and their associations with NK subsets activation phenotypes and potential clinical significance, furthermore, to explore potential cause for CD226/TIGIT expression diversities in pAPS. We comparatively assessed the changes of CD56brightNK, CD56dimNK, and NK-like cells in 70 pAPS patients compared with control groups, including systemic lupus erythematosus, asymptomatic antiphospholipid antibodies carriers (asymp-aPLs carriers), and healthy controls and their expression diversities of CD226/TIGIT by flow cytometry. CD25, CD69, CD107α expression, and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) secretion levels of NK subsets were detected to determine the potential association of CD226/TIGIT expression with NK subsets phenotypes. CD226/TIGIT expression levels were compared among different subgroups divided by aPLs status. Moreover, in vitro cultures were conducted to explore the potential mechanisms of CD226/TIGIT expression imbalance. CD56brightNK and CD3+CD56+NK-like cells were significantly increased while CD56dimNK cells were obviously decreased in pAPS, and CD56brightNK and NK-like cells exhibited significantly higher CD226 but lower TIGIT expressions. CD226+CD56brightNK and TIGIT-CD56brightNK cells show higher CD69 expression and IFN-γ secretion capacity, and CD226+NK-like and TIGIT-NK-like cells showed higher expressions of CD25 and CD69 but lower apoptosis rate than CD226- and TIGIT+CD56brightNK/NK-like cells, respectively. The imbalanced CD226/TIGIT expressions were most significant in aPLs triple-positive group. Imbalanced expressions of CD226/TIGIT on CD56brightNK and NK-like cells were aggravated after interleukin-4 (IL-4) stimulation and recovered after tofacitinib blocking. Our data revealed significant imbalanced CD226/TIGIT expressions on NK subsets in pAPS, which closely associated with NK subsets phenotypes and more complicated autoantibody status. CD226/TIGIT imbalanced may be affected by IL-4/Janus Kinase (JAK) pathway activation.

Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are evolved for plant cell-cell communications. The typical RLK protein contains an extracellular and hypervariable N-terminus to perceive various signals, a transmembrane domain to anchor into plasma membrane, and a cytoplasmic, highly conserved kinase domain to phosphorylate target proteins. To date, RLKs have manifested their significance in a myriad of biological processes during plant reproductive growth, especially in male fertility. This review first summarizes a recent update on RLKs and their interacting protein partners controlling anther and pollen development, pollen release from dehisced anther, and pollen function during pollination and fertilization. Then, regulatory networks of RLK signaling pathways are proposed. In addition, we predict RLKs in maize and rice genome, obtain homologs of well-studied RLKs from phylogeny of three subfamilies and then analyze their expression patterns in developing anthers of maize and rice to excavate potential RLKs regulating male fertility in crops. Finally, current challenges and future prospects regarding RLKs are discussed. This review will contribute to a better understanding of plant male fertility control by RLKs, creating potential male sterile lines, and inspiring innovative crop breeding methods.

BACKGROUND AIMS: As a global health threat, NASH has been confirmed to be a chronic progressive liver disease that is strongly associated with obesity. However, no approved drugs or efficient therapeutic strategies are valid, mainly because its complicated pathological processes is underestimated. APPROACH RESULTS: We identified the RING-type E3 ubiquitin transferase-tripartite motif-containing protein 31 (TRIM31), a member of the E3 ubiquitin ligases family, as an efficient endogenous inhibitor of transforming growth factor-beta-activated kinase 1 (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 7; MAP3K7), and we further confirmed that TRIM31 is an MAP3K7-interacting protein and promotes MAP3K7 degradation by enhancing ubiquitination of K48 linkage in hepatocytes. Hepatocyte-specific Trim31 deletion blocks hepatic metabolism homeostasis, concomitant with glucose metabolic syndrome, lipid accumulation, up-regulated inflammation, and dramatically facilitates NASH progression. Inversely, transgenic overexpression, lentivirus, or adeno-associated virus-mediated Trim31 gene therapy restrain NASH in three dietary mice models. Mechanistically, in response to metabolic insults, TRIM31 interacts with MAP3K7 and conjugates K48-linked ubiquitination chains to promote MAP3K7 degradation, thus blocking MAP3K7 abundance and its downstream signaling cascade activation in hepatocytes. CONCLUSIONS: TRIM31 may serve as a promising therapeutic target for NASH treatment and associated metabolic disorders.

Polarization modulation of electromagnetic waves plays an important role in the field of optics and optoelectronics. Current polarization optics are typically limited to the modulation in a single transverse plane. However, manipulating polarization along the longitudinal direction is also important for full-space polarization modulation. Here, we propose two kinds of all-dielectric terahertz metasurfaces for longitudinally spatial polarization manipulation. The metasurfaces are capable of controlling polarization along the propagation path, namely: i) a longitudinal bifocal metalens with different polarization states at each focal point, and ii) a versatile metalens can simultaneously generate a uniformly polarized focused beam and a vector beam with varying polarization along the propagation path. Furthermore, the measurement of the dielectric thickness is demonstrated based on the polarization modulation feature of the metalens. The proposed metasurfaces allow for effective polarization state alteration along the propagation path, exhibiting significant potential for applications in versatile light-matter interactions, optical communications, and quantum optics.

RATIONALE: Numerous studies have established a robust association between bone morrow microvascular diseases and osteoporosis. This study sought to investigate the relationship between alterations in trans-cortical vessel (TCVs) and the onset of osteoporosis in various mouse models. METHODS: Aged mice, ovariectomized mice, and db/db mice, were utilized as osteoporosis models. TCVs in the tibia were detected using tissue clearing and light sheet fluorescence microscopy imaging. Femurs bone mass were analyzed using micro-CT scanning. Correlations between the number of TCVs and bone mass were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS: All osteoporosis mouse models showed a significant reduction in the number of TCVs compared to the control group. Correlation analysis revealed a positive association between the number of TCVs and bone mass. TCVs were also expressed high levels of CD31 and EMCN proteins as type H vessels. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores a consistent correlation between the number of TCVs and bone mass. Moreover, TCVs may serve as a potential biomarker for bone mass evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD), affecting many elders worldwide, is characterized by A-beta and tau-related cognitive decline. Accumulating evidence suggests that brain iron accumulation is an important characteristic of AD. However, the function and mechanism of the iron-mediated gut-brain axis on AD is still unclear. METHODS: A Caenorhabditis elegans model with tau-overexpression and a high-Fe diet mouse model of cognitive impairment was used for probiotic function evaluation. With the use of qPCR, and immunoblotting, the probiotic regulated differential expression of AD markers and iron related transporting genes was determined. Colorimetric kits, IHC staining, and immunofluorescence have been performed to explore the probiotic mechanism on the development of gut-brain links and brain iron accumulation. RESULTS: In the present study, a high-Fe diet mouse model was used for evaluation in which cognitive impairment, higher A-beta, tau and phosphorylated (p)-tau expression, and dysfunctional phosphate distribution were observed. Considering the close crosstalk between intestine and brain, probiotics were then employed to delay the process of cognitive impairment in the HFe mouse model. Pediococcus acidilactici (PA), but not Bacillus subtilis (BN) administration in HFe-fed mice reduced brain iron accumulation, enhanced global alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, accelerated dephosphorylation, lowered phosphate levels and increased brain urate production. In addition, because PA regulated cognitive behavior in HFe fed mice, we used the transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans with over-expressed human p-tau for model, and then PA fed worms became more active and longer lived than E.coli fed worms, as well as p-tau was down-regulated. These results suggest that brain iron accumulation influences AD risk proteins and various metabolites. Furthermore, PA was shown to reverse tau-induced pathogenesis via iron transporters and AP-urate interaction. CONCLUSIONS: PA administration studies demonstrate that PA is an important mediator of tau protein reduction, p-tau expression and neurodegenerative behavior both in Caenorhabditis elegans and iron-overload mice. Finally, our results provide candidates for AP modulation strategies as preventive tools for promoting brain health. Video Abstract.

A Cu-Fe bimetallic hydrogel (2-QF-CuFe-G) was constructed through a simple method. The 2-QF-CuFe-G metallohydrogel possesses excellent peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2. The catalytic mechanism was confirmed by the addition of •OH radical scavenger isopropyl alcohol (IPA), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and ˙OH trapping agent terephthalic acid (TA). Remarkably, the resultant blue ox-TMB system can be used to selectively and sensitively detect ascorbic acid (AA) with an LOD of 0.93 µM in the range of 4-36 µM through the colorimetric method. Moreover, the assay based on the 2-QF-CuFe-G metallohydrogel can be successfully applied to detect AA in fresh fruits.

OBJECTIVES: Frailty is a risk factor for faster cognitive decline, while plant-based dietary patterns are associated with decreased risk of cognitive decline. We aimed to explore their interaction with cognitive function among older adults. METHODS: We used data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey between 2008 and 2018. Frailty was evaluated based on the frailty index (FI), and the plant-based diet index (PDI) was calculated using food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Repeated measures of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were utilised to assess cognitive function. We used linear mixed models to estimate regression coefficients (ß) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: We included 7,166 participants with a median follow-up of 5.8 years. Participants in pre-frail (ß = -0.18, 95% CI: -0.24, -0.13) and frail (ß = -0.39, 95% CI: -0.48, -0.30) groups experienced an accelerated decline in MMSE score compared with the robust group. The PDI modified the above association, with corresponding associations with frailty being much more pronounced among participants with a lower PDI (frail vs. robust ß = -0.44, 95% CI: -0.56, -0.32), compared with those with a higher PDI (frail vs. robust ß = -0.27, 95% CI: -0.40, -0.13). In addition, A combination of frailty and a low PDI was strongly associated with a faster decline in MMSE score (ß = -0.52, 95% CI: -0.63, -0.41). CONCLUSION: Adherence to plant-based dietary patterns attenuates the association between frailty and cognitive decline. If the observed association is causal, promoting plant-based dietary patterns may be a strategy to reduce the effects of frailty on neurological health.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become an increasingly important public health disease with a high incidence rate and mortality. Although several studies have explored the effectiveness of resistance exercise in improving the prognosis of CKD patients, the number of studies is still limited and the results are still controversial. OBJECTIVES: We conducted this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) studies to evaluate the effectiveness of resistance exercise on CKD patients. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from the inception date to October 2023. The meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate 12 main indicators, including glomerular filtration rate (GFR)(ml/(min•1.73m2)), C-reactive protein (CRP) (mg/L), serum creatinine (mg/dL), hemoglobin (g/dL), Glycosylated Hemoglobin, Type A1C (HBA1c) (%), high Density Lipoprotein (HDL) (mg/dL), low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) (mg/dL), 6-min walk(m), body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), fat-free mass (kg), fat mass (kg), grip strength (kgf). RESULTS: Sixteen RCT studies were included in this meta-analysis from 875 records. GFR exhibited no significant change in CKD patients treated with resistance exercise (WMD 1.82; 95%CI -0.59 to 4.23; P = 0.139). However, 6-min walk (WMD 89.93; 95%CI 50.12 to 129.74; P = 0.000), fat-free mass (WMD 6.53; 95%CI 1.14 to 11.93; P = 0.018) and grip strength (WMD 3.97; 95%CI 1.89 to 6.05; P = 0.000) were significantly improved with resistance exercise. The level of CRP (WMD - 2.46; 95%CI -4.21 to -0.72; P = 0.006) and HBA1c (WMD - 0.46; 95%CI -0.63 to -0.29; P = 0.000) dropped significantly after resistance exercise treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Resistance exercise can improve physical function, metabolic condition, inflammatory response and cardiopulmonary function in CKD patients, specifically reflected in the increase of indicators fat-free mass, grip strength, 6-min walk, as well as the decrease of indicators HBA1c and CRP.

BACKGROUND: Extensive metastatic and refractory cancer pain is common, and exhibits a dissatisfactory response to the conventional intrathecal infusion of opioid analgesics. CASE PRESENTATION: The present study reports a case of an extensive metastatic esophageal cancer patient with severe intractable pain, who underwent translumbar subarachnoid puncture with intrathecal catheterization to the prepontine cistern. After continuous infusion of low-dose morphine, the pain was well-controlled with a decrease in the numeric rating scale (NRS) of pain score from 9 to 0, and the few adverse reactions to the treatment disappeared at a low dose of morphine. CONCLUSIONS: The patient achieved a good quality of life during the one-month follow-up period.

OBJECTIVE: Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) signaling play an important role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, the link between TLR2 and ERS in IBD is unclear. This study investigated whether Thapsigargin (TG) -induced ER protein expression levels contributed to TLR2-mediated inflammatory response. METHODS: The THP-1 cells were treated with TLR2 agonist (Pam3CSK4), ERS inducer Thapsigargin (TG) or inhibitor (TUDCA). The mRNA expressions of TLR1-TLR10 were detected by qPCR. The production and secretion of inflammatory factors were detected by PCR and ELISA. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expressions of GRP78 and TLR2 in the intestinal mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). The IBD mouse model was established by TNBS in the modeling group. ERS inhibitor (TUDCA) was used in the treatment group. RESULTS: The expression of TLRs was detected via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in THP-1 cells treated by ERS agonist Thapsigargin (TG). According to the findings, TG could promote TLR2 and TLR5 expression. Subsequently, in TLR2 agonist Pam3CSK4 induced THP-1 cells, TG could lead to increased expression of the inflammatory factors such as TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-8, and ERS inhibitor (TUDCA) could block this effect. However, Pam3CSK4 did not significantly impact the GRP78 and CHOP expression. Based upon the immunohistochemical results, TLR2 and GRP78 expression were significantly increased in the intestinal mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). For in vivo experiments, TUDCA displayed the ability to inhibit intestinal mucosal inflammation and reduce GRP78 and TLR2 proteins. CONCLUSIONS: ERS and TLR2 is upregulated in inflammatory bowel disease, ERS may promote TLR2 pathway-mediated inflammatory response. Moreover, ERS and TLR2 signaling could be novel therapeutic targets for IBD.

Lignin is a crucial substance in the formation of the secondary cell wall in plants. It is widely distributed in various plant tissues and plays a significant role in various biological processes. However, the number of copies, characteristics, and expression patterns of genes involved in lignin biosynthesis in maize are not fully understood. In this study, bioinformatic analysis and gene expression analysis were used to discover the lignin synthetic genes, and two representative maize inbred lines were used for stem strength phenotypic analysis and gene identification. Finally, 10 gene families harboring 117 related genes involved in the lignin synthesis pathway were retrieved in the maize genome. These genes have a high number of copies and are typically clustered on chromosomes. By examining the lignin content of stems and the expression patterns of stem-specific genes in two representative maize inbred lines, we identified three potential stem lodging resistance genes and their interactions with transcription factors. This study provides a foundation for further research on the regulation of lignin biosynthesis and maize lodging resistance genes.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal hypoglycemia (NH) is the most frequent complication in neonates born to pregnant people with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and an important cause of brain damage and death of neonates. We explored the risk factors for NH in neonates of pregnant people with GDM. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted involving 322 pregnant people with GDM at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Centre. Maternal sociodemographic, clinical, and biochemical data, as well as general characteristics of neonates, were collected to analyze their associations with NH in neonates of pregnant people with GDM. RESULTS: The incidence of NH among neonates of pregnant people with GDM was 19.57% (63/322). After adjustment for confounders, the factors significantly associated with an increased risk of NH were cesarean delivery (relative risk [RR] = 3.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.83-6.45), red blood cell (RBC) count (RR = 2.19; 95% CI, 1.22-3.96), and 1-hour postprandial glucose (RR = 2.35; 95% CI, 1.23-4.46) during pregnancy, whereas later gestational age (RR = 0.58; 95% CI, 0.42-0.80) and multiparity (RR = 0.32; 95% CI, 0.16-0.66) were associated with a reduced risk of NH. CONCLUSION: Cesarean delivery, maternal 1-hour glucose of the oral glucose tolerance test, and increased RBC count of pregnant people with GDM are independent risk factors for NH, while later gestational age and multiparity are protective factors.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the primary exogenous inducer of skin pigmentation, although the mechanism has not been fully elucidated. N6-methyladenosine (m6 A) modification is one of the key epigenetic form of gene regulation that affects multiple biological processes. The aim of this study was to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of m6 A modification in UVB-induced melanogenesis. Low-dose UVB increased global m6 A modification in melanocytes (MCs) and MNT1 melanoma cell line. The GEPIA database predicted that methyltransferase METTL3 is positively correlated with the melanogenic transcription factor MITF in the sun-exposed skin tissues. After METTL3 respectively overexpressed and knocked down in the MNT1, the melanin content and melanogenesis-related genes were significantly upregulated after overexpression of METTL3, especially with UVB irradiation, and downregulated after METTL3 knockdown. METTL3 levels were also higher in melanocytic nevi with high melanin content. METTL3 overexpression and knockdown also altered the protein level of YAP1. SRAMP analysis predicted four high-potential m6 A modification sites on YAP1 mRNA, of which three were confirmed by methylated RNA immunoprecipitation. Inhibition of YAP1 expression can partially reverse melanogenesis induced by overexpression of METTL3. In conclusion, UVB irradiation promotes global m6 A modification in MCs and upregulates METTL3, which increases the expression level of YAP1 through m6 A modification, thereby activating the co-transcription factor TEAD1 and promoting melanogenesis.

Bone marrow endothelial cells (BMECs) play a crucial role in the maintenance of bone homeostasis. The decline in BMECs is associated with abnormal bone development and loss. At present, the mechanism of age-related oxidative stress enhancement in BMEC dysfunction remains unclear. Our experiment explored injury caused by oxidative stress enhancement in BMECs both in vivo and in vitro. The BMECs, indicators of oxidative stress, bone mass, and apoptosis-related proteins were analyzed in different age groups. We also evaluated the ability of N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) attenuate oxidative stress injury in BMECs. NAC treatment attenuated reactive oxygen species (ROS) overgeneration and apoptosis in BMECs in vitro and alleviated the loss of BMECs and bone mass in vivo. In conclusion, this study could improve our understanding of the mechanism of oxidative stress-induced BMECs injury and whether NAC has therapeutic potential in senile osteoporosis.

Stalk rot caused by Fusarium verticillioides (Fv) is one of the most destructive diseases in maize production. The defence response of root system to Fv invasion is important for plant growth and development. Dissection of root cell type-specific response to Fv infection and its underlying transcription regulatory networks will aid in understanding the defence mechanism of maize roots to Fv invasion. Here, we reported the transcriptomes of 29 217 single cells derived from root tips of two maize inbred lines inoculated with Fv and mock condition, and identified seven major cell types with 21 transcriptionally distinct cell clusters. Through the weighted gene co-expression network analysis, we identified 12 Fv-responsive regulatory modules from 4049 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that were activated or repressed by Fv infection in these seven cell types. Using a machining-learning approach, we constructed six cell type-specific immune regulatory networks by integrating Fv-induced DEGs from the cell type-specific transcriptomes, 16 known maize disease-resistant genes, five experimentally validated genes (ZmWOX5b, ZmPIN1a, ZmPAL6, ZmCCoAOMT2, and ZmCOMT), and 42 QTL or QTN predicted genes that are associated with Fv resistance. Taken together, this study provides not only a global view of maize cell fate determination during root development but also insights into the immune regulatory networks in major cell types of maize root tips at single-cell resolution, thus laying the foundation for dissecting molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistance in maize.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus, one of the most prevalent opportunistic pathogens, mainly colonizes the nasal cavity and is a risk factor for severe infections. Virulence factors and accessory gene regulator (agr) are key to the severity and diversity of staphylococcal infection. In this study, we aimed to characterise S. aureus agr-types and virulence genes and correlated them with genetic background and antibiotic-resistant phenotypes. RESULTS: Agr types were identified in 704 isolates (98.5%), with only 11 isolates were negative for agr type. Most of our isolates were classified as agr type I, followed by types III, II and IV. The enterotoxin c gene (sec) was detected in 48.6% of isolates, showing the highest prevalence among the five enterotoxin genes detected. The positivity rates for the lukS/F-PV and tsst genes were 4% and 2.2%, respectively, while neither sed nor SasX were detected. ST45, ST59, ST338, ST188, ST6, ST7, ST22, ST25, ST398, and ST944 belonged to agr I group, while ST5 and ST15 belonged to agr II group. ST30 and ST1 were classified into agr III group, and ST121 was assigned into agr IV group. The tsst gene was found exclusively within agr I and III types belonging to ST7 and ST30 isolates, while the lukS/F-PV was predominantly carried by agr I type isolates primarily within CC59 and CC22 clones. Among the methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates, 89.7% belonged to agr I group, and 97.8% of rifampicin-resistant or intermediate isolates were assigned to agr I group. MRSA isolates harboured more tested virulence genes compared to methicillin-susceptible S. aureus isolates. CONCLUSIONS: We characterized the distributions of agr types and eight major virulence genes of 715 S. aureus isolates, and our findings revealed clear associations between agr types and STs, as well as virulence genes, and drug resistant phenotypes.

The selective synthesis of monomethylated amines with CO2 is particularly challenging because the formation of tertiary amines is thermodynamically more favorable. Herein, a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of N-monomethylated amines from primary amines and CO2 /H2 is explored. First-principle calculations reveal that the dissociation of H2 via an heterolytic route reduces the reactivity of methylated amines and thus inhibit successive methylation. In situ DRIFTS proves the process of formation and decomposition of ammonium salt by secondary amine reversible binding with H+ on the Ag/Al2 O3 catalyst, thereby reducing its reactivity. Meanwhile, the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of monomethylation was much lower than that of overmethylation (0.34 eV vs. 0.58 eV) means amines monomethylation in preference to successive methylation. Under optimal reaction conditions, a variety of amines were converted to the corresponding monomethylated amines in good to excellent yields, and more than 90 % yield of product was obtained.
