RESUMO

PIP: Over the period of 1969-1971, the maternity ward of Aziza Othmana Hospital (Tunisia) and its family planning unit have used several different techniques for therapeutic abortion. There were 2338 abortions by curettage; of these cases, the complications were: 15 perforations, 12 postabortion infections, 8 hemorrhages, 5 cases of synechiae, and 5 cases of placental retention. Aspiration was substituted for curettage, and in the case of advanced pregnancy, a hypertonic saline serum was injected transamniotically. The number of perforations due to inexperienced physicians was significantly decreased, and infections were less frequent. Placental retention by this technique was almost zero if the pregnancy was in the 4th to 10th weeks. The results have been satisfactory, but the number of cases so treated has been low. The aspiration technique used since October 1969 is simple and causes a minimum of trauma; curettage takes 2 minutes, and the hospitalization time is a maximum of 10 hours. 1 case of fibrinolysis was seen, and there is some risk of amniotic embolism which can be avoided by Ravina's technique of amniocentesis.^ieng
