RESUMO

Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles are important mediators of cell-to-cell communication during tumorigenesis. Here, we demonstrated that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-derived ectosomes remodel the tumor microenvironment to facilitate HCC progression in an ectosomal PKM2-dependent manner. HCC-derived ectosomal PKM2 induced not only metabolic reprogramming in monocytes but also STAT3 phosphorylation in the nucleus to upregulate differentiation-associated transcription factors, leading to monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation and tumor microenvironment remodeling. In HCC cells, sumoylation of PKM2 induced its plasma membrane targeting and subsequent ectosomal excretion via interactions with ARRDC1. The PKM2-ARRDC1 association in HCC was reinforced by macrophage-secreted cytokines/chemokines in a CCL1-CCR8 axis-dependent manner, further facilitating PKM2 excretion from HCC cells to form a feedforward regulatory loop for tumorigenesis. In the clinic, ectosomal PKM2 was clearly detected in the plasma of HCC patients. This study highlights a mechanism by which ectosomal PKM2 remodels the tumor microenvironment and reveals ectosomal PKM2 as a potential diagnostic marker for HCC.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of fever of unknown origin remains challenge for pediatricians. Lymphadenopathy is a separate entity that mainly originates from infection or malignancy. METHODS: 168 patients with FUO accompanied by lymphadenectasis were reviewed. 33 lymph node tissue samples were examined by mNGS. Differences in clinical characteristics were compared among different disease groups. The value of mNGS in diagnosing and improving the clinical situation was assessed. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis revealed that hepatosplenomegaly and LDH levels were associated with infectious diseases. Arthralgia was correlated with non-infectious inflammatory diseases. Weight loss and a node located in supraclavicular region may indicate neoplastic diseases. mNGS-positive rate was 60.60%, higher than that obtained with traditional methods. Treatment for 3/4 patients was adjusted according to the pathogen detected by mNGS, and antibiotics uses was discontinued or degraded in over 1/2 of the patients according to mNGS results. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical characteristics of children with lymphadenopathy related to FUO have limited diagnostic value for distinguishing different kinds of diseases, while mNGS of lymph node tissue serves as a useful tool for identifying infectious diseases, especially those caused by rare pathogens. mNGS results can lead to not only adjustments in targeted treatment but also further confirmation of underlying diseases. IMPACT STATEMENT: 1. The clinical features of children with FUO and lymphadenopathy differ according to disease group,although multivariate analysis indicated little diagnostic value for these features. 2. mNGS on lymph node tissue from children with FUO may serve as a efficient tool for distinguishing infectious diseases from other diseases. This is especially useful when a diagnosis cannot be determined with traditional methods. 3. mNGS targeted treatment can be administered in a timely manner and some underlying diseases can be indicated.

Chlorinated anthracenes (Cl-Ants), persistent organic pollutants, are widely detected in the environment, posing potential lung toxicity risks due to frequent respiratory exposure. However, direct evidence and a comprehensive understanding of their toxicity mechanisms are lacking. Building on our prior findings of Cl-Ants' immunotoxic risks, this study developed a three-dimensional coculture spheroid model mimicking the lung's immune microenvironment. The objective is to explore the pulmonary immunotoxicity and comprehend its mechanisms, taking into account the heightened immune reactivity and frequent lung exposure of Cl-Ants. The results demonstrated that Cl-Ants exposure led to reduced spheroid size, increased macrophage migration outward, lowered cell viability, elevated 8-OHdG levels, disturbed anti-infection balance, and altered cytokine production. Specifically, the chlorine substituent number correlates with the extent of disruption of spheroid indicators caused by Cl-Ants, with stronger immunotoxic effects observed in dichlorinated Ant compared to those in monochlorinated Ant. Furthermore, we identified critical regulatory genes associated with cell viability (ALDOC and ALDOA), bacterial response (TLR5 and MAP2K6), and GM-CSF production (CEBPB). Overall, this study offers initial in vitro evidence of low-dose Cl-PAHs' pulmonary immunotoxicity, advancing the understanding of Cl-Ants' structure-related toxicity and improving external toxicity assessment methods for environmental pollutants, which holds significance for future monitoring and evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of the present study was to assess the beneficial effect of Lactobacillus plantarum GM11 (LacP GM11), screened from Sichuan traditional fermented food, in depressive rats induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). METHODS: Male SPF SD rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups: the control group, CUMS group and CUMS + LacP GM11 group (n = 10). The rats in the CUMS and LacP GM11 groups received CUMS stimulation for 42 d. The behavioral tests and levels of monoamine neurotransmitter, glucocorticoid hormone and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the serum and hippocampus were measured. The effects of LacP GM11 on the mRNA and protein expression of BDNF and cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) in the hippocampus were also investigated. RESULTS: After supplementation for 21 d, LacP GM11 was associated with alleviation of depressive-like behavior, not anxiety-like behavior, in depressive rats. LacP GM11 increased the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and BDNF and decreased the level of cortisol (CORT) in the serum and hippocampus in depressed rats. In addition, treatment with LacP GM11 also increased the mRNA and protein expression of BDNF and CREB in the hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS: This work has revealed that LacP GM11 has potential beneficial effects on depression. This effect might be related to alleviating monoamine neurotransmitter deficiency, HPA axis hyperfunction and CREB-BDNF signaling pathway downregulation. This study demonstrates that LacP GM11 could be a potential therapeutic approach to treat depression and other mental health problems.

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a destructive disease of Stylosanthes (stylo). Combination treatment of phloretin and pterostilbene (PP) has been previously shown to effectively inhibit the conidial germination and mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides in vitro. In this study, the effects of PP treatment on the growth of C. gloeosporioides in vivo and the biocontrol mechanisms were investigated. We found that exogenous PP treatment could limit the growth of C. gloeosporioides and alleviate the damage of anthracnose in stylo. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that 565 genes were up-regulated and 239 genes were down-regulated upon PP treatment during the infection by C. gloeosporioides. The differentially expressed genes were mainly related to oxidative stress and chloroplast organization. Further physiological analysis revealed that application of PP after C. gloeosporioides inoculation significantly reduced the accumulation of O2•- level and increased the accumulation of antioxidants (glutathione, ascorbic acid and flavonoids) as well as the enzyme activity of total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase. PP also reduced the decline of chlorophyll a + b and increased the content of carotenoid in response to C. gloeosporioides infection. These results suggest that PP treatment alleviates anthracnose by improving antioxidant capacity and reducing the damage of chloroplasts, providing insights into the biocontrol mechanisms of PP on the stylo against anthracnose.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated derivatives are a series of environmental pollutants with potential toxicity and health risks on biosystems and the ecosystem. Rapid and sensitive analysis of trace PAHs and halogenated PAHs in complex environmental samples is a challenging topic for analytical science. Here we report the development of a nanospray laser-induced plasma ionization MS method for rapid and sensitive analysis of trace PAHs and halogenated PAHs under ambient and open-air conditions. A nanospray tip was applied for loading samples and placed pointing to the MS inlet, being a nanospray emitter with the application of a high voltage. A beam of laser was focused to induce energetic plasma between the nanospray emitter and the MS inlet for ionization of PAHs and halogenated PAHs for mass spectrometric analysis. Meanwhile, an inner-wall naphthyl-coated nanospray emitter was developed and applied as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) probe for highly selective enrichment of trace PAHs and halogenated PAHs in complex environmental samples, and some organic solvent was applied to desorb the analytes for nanospray laser-induced plasma ionization MS analysis. Satisfactory linearity for each target PAH and halogenated PAH was obtained, with correlation coefficient values (r) no less than 0.9917. The method showed extremely high sensitivity for analysis of trace PAHs and halogenated PAHs in water, with limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) of 0.0001-0.02 and 0.0003-0.08 µg/L, respectively. By using the inner-wall naphthyl-coated nanospray laser-induced plasma ionization MS method, sensitive detection of trace PAHs and halogenated PAHs in real sewage and wastewater samples was successfully achieved.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a highly aggressive malignant bone tumor that mainly occurs in adolescents. At present, chemotherapy is the most commonly used method in clinical practice to treat OS. However, due to drug resistance, toxicity and long-term side effects, chemotherapy can't always provide sufficient benefits for OS patients, especially those with metastasis and recurrence. Natural products have long been an excellent source of anti-tumor drug development. In the current study, we evaluated the anti-OS activity of Echinatin (Ecn), a natural active component from the roots and rhizomes of licorice, and explored the possible mechanism. We found that Ecn inhibited the proliferation of human OS cells and blocked cell cycle at S phase. In addition, Ecn suppressed the migration and invasion, while induced the apoptosis of human OS cells. However, Ecn had less cytotoxicity against normal cells. Moreover, Ecn inhibited the xenograft tumor growth of OS cells in vivo. Mechanistically, Ecn inactivated Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway while activated p38 signaling pathway. ß-catenin over-expression and the p38 inhibitor SB203580 both attenuated the inhibitory effect of Ecn on OS cells. Notably, we demonstrated that Ecn exhibited synergistic inhibitory effect with cisplatin (DDP) on OS cells in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, our results suggest that Ecn may exert anti-OS effects at least partly through regulating Wnt/ß-catenin and p38 signaling pathways. Most meaningfully, the results obtained suggest a potential strategy to improve the DDP-induced tumor-killing effect on OS cells by combining with Ecn.

Nuclear receptor Nur77 participates in multiple metabolic regulations and plays paradoxical roles in tumorigeneses. Herein, we demonstrated that the knockout of Nur77 stimulated mammary tumor development in two mouse models, which would be reversed by a specific reexpression of Nur77 in mammary tissues. Mechanistically, Nur77 interacted and recruited corepressors, the SWI/SNF complex, to the promoters of CD36 and FABP4 to suppress their transcriptions, which hampered the fatty acid uptake, leading to the inhibition of cell proliferation. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) played an antagonistic role in this process through binding to Nur77 to facilitate ubiquitin ligase Trim13-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of Nur77. Cocrystallographic and functional analysis revealed that Csn-B, a Nur77-targeting compound, promoted the formation of Nur77 homodimer to prevent PPARγ binding by steric hindrance, thereby strengthening the Nur77's inhibitory role in breast cancer. Therefore, our study reveals a regulatory function of Nur77 in breast cancer via impeding fatty acid uptake.

Biotransformation and biodegradation of estrogenic compounds by bacteria and even fungi have been reported widely, but the role of microalgae in the elimination of estrogens from municipal wastewater treatment plants and their interaction with other microorganisms in wastewater are not clear. This study reported the feasibility of repeatedly removing a mixture of 17ß-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), each was 100 µg L-1, from primary settled municipal sewage by Selenastrum capricornutum (SC), a ubiquitous microalga, in four exposure cycles, each lasted 7 days, and how they interacted with the microbial consortium in sewage. Mixed estrogen in sewage stimulated the growth of SC, and the indigenous microorganisms in sewage also affected the microalgal growth. The indigenous microorganisms, particularly bacteria, could easily remove E2 (with 99.5% removal), so the role of SC was insignificant. On the contrary, EE2 was difficult to remove by indigenous microorganisms but the removal was significantly enhanced by SC, with almost all spiked EE2 being removed, even at the end of the fourth cycle (with 99.0% removal). These results indicated that SC, together with the indigenous microorganisms in wastewater, could be repeatedly used for simultaneous removal of E2 and EE2 from municipal sewage.

BACKGROUND: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has the potential to become a complementary, if not essential, test in some clinical settings. However, the clinical application of mNGS in a large population of children with various types of infectious diseases (IDs) has not been previously evaluated. METHODS: From April 2019 to April 2021, 640 samples were collected at a single pediatric hospital and classified as ID [479 (74.8%)], non-ID [NID; 156 (24.4%)], and unknown cases [5 (0.8%)], according to the final clinical diagnosis. We compared the diagnostic performance in pathogen detection between mNGS and standard reference tests. RESULTS: According to final clinical diagnosis, the sensitivity and specificity of mNGS were 75.0% (95% CI: 70.8%-79.2%) and 59.0% (95% CI: 51.3%-66.7%), respectively. For distinguishing ID from NID, the sensitivity of mNGS was approximately 45.0% higher than that of standard tests (75.0% vs 30.0%; P < 0.001). For fungal detection, mNGS showed positive results in 93.0% of cases, compared to 43.7% for standard tests (P < 0.001). Diagnostic information was increased in respiratory system samples through the addition of meta-transcriptomic sequencing. Further analysis also showed that the read counts in sequencing data were highly correlated with clinical diagnosis, regardless of whether infection was by single or multiple pathogens (Kendall's tau b = 0.484, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: For pediatric patients in critical condition with suspected infection, mNGS tests can provide valuable diagnostic information to resolve negative or inconclusive routine test results, differentiate ID from NID cases, and facilitate accurate and effective clinical therapeutic decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective analysis was to explore whether an elevated ALT level before pregnancy is associated with a reduction in live birth rate after IVF-FET. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. SETTING: Shiyan People's Hospital, China between January 2019 and December 2019. PATIENTS: Women aged ≤ 40 years. INTERVENTION(S): Freeze-thawed embryo transfer (FET). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): The live birth rate, which was defined as the delivery of a live baby after 24 weeks of gestation. RESULTS: The analysis included 365 FET cycles. There was a significant difference between groups in the live birth rate (p < .05), which was highest for the low ALT tertile and lowest for the high ALT tertile. Multiple regression analysis with adjustment for multiple potential confounders revealed that the odds of live birth were decreased for each one standard deviation increase in ALT (OR = 0.56, 95%CI = 0.42-0.75, p < .0001) and lower for the high ALT tertile than for the low ALT tertile (OR = 0.38, 95%CI = 0.19-0.75, p = .0055). Smooth curve fitting showed an inverse relationship between ALT and live birth rate. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that relatively small elevations in baseline serum ALT level can have a clinically relevant impact on the success of FET.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of serious gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases in newborn infants, with a high morbidity and mortality. Red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) plays a controversial and doubtful role in the treatment of NEC. In present study, we aim to analyze the association between RBCT and the deterioration of NEC. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of near-term and full-term infants with a confirmed diagnosis of Bell's stage II NEC between Jan 1, 2010 and Jan 31, 2020. The maternal and infant baseline characteristics, treatment information and laboratory test for each case were collected. The eligible subjects were divided into two groups based on receiving RBCT post NEC diagnosis or not. The propensity score was used to eliminate potential bias and baseline differences. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to adjust the propensity score and calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidential interval (CI) of RBCT for the deterioration of NEC. RESULTS: A total of 242 infants were included in this study, 60 infants had a history of RBCT post NEC diagnosis, and 40 infants deteriorated from Bell's stage II to stage III. By adjusting the propensity score, RBCT post NEC diagnosis was associated with an increased risk for NEC deteriorating from stage II to III (adjusted OR 6.06, 95%CI 2.94-12.50, P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: NEC infants who required RBCT post NEC diagnosis were more likely to deteriorate from stage II to III in full-term and near-term infants.

Pigeonpea is the main protein source for more than one billion people, and it shows a strong adaptation to biotic stress and abiotic stress. Gene duplication is a fundamental process in genome evolution. Although the draft sequence of the pigeonpea genome has been available since 2011, further analysis of tandem duplicated genes (TDGs) and their contribution to the evolution of pigeonpea has not been reported. In this study, we identify 3211 TDGs in the pigeonpea genome and KEGG enrichment analysis of these genes shows that the TDGs are significantly enriched in resistance-related pathways. In addition, we find that TDGs are more abundant in retrotransposon-related genes in pigeonpea than in the other species included in our study. These results indicate that stress resistance in pigeonpea may be ascribed to resistance-related pathways and retrotransposons originating from tandem duplications. Our study will provide an important basis for further research in pigeonpea breeding.

Colletotrichum, a hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen with a broad host range, causes a yield-limiting disease called anthracnose. Stylo (Stylosanthes) is a dominant pasture legume in tropics and subtropics, and anthracnose is one of its most destructive disease. Resistance mechanisms against anthracnose in stylo are poorly understood, thus hindering the development of resistant varieties. We performed time-resolved leaf transcriptomics, metabolomics and in vitro inhibition assay to investigate the defense responses against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in stylo. Transcriptomics demonstrated that flavonoid biosynthetic genes were significantly induced during the infection. Consistently, metabolomics also showed the increased accumulation of flavonoid compounds. In vitro assays showed that phloretin and naringenin inhibited the mycelial growth, and apigenin, daidzein, quercetin and kaempferol suppressed conidial germination of Colletotrichum strains. Together, our results suggest that stylo plants cope with C. gloeosporioides by up-regulation of genes and compounds in flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, providing potential targets for resistance breeding.

BACKGROUND: Soil quality assessment is a critical strategy for determining optimum fertilization in intensive pomelo production. In this study, we evaluated the soil quality status and mapped the spatial distribution of 347 soil samples collected from pomelo orchards in Pinghe County, southern China. We analyzed nine chemical parameters and an altitude indicator. RESULTS: The mean soil quality index (SQI) was 0.355 in the total data set (TDS) and 0.292 in the minimum data set (MDS). Available Ca (Avail-Ca), pH value, organic matter and altitude were selected as indicators of soil quality in the MDS. The SQI in mature orchards (>10 years) was higher than that in young orchards (<10 years), while no differences between soil types and altitude gradients were identified. We detected a significant positive correlation between the SQI based on TDS (SQITDS ) and the SQI based on MDS (SQIMDS ), and the spatial distribution of soil properties and SQITDS showed a uniform pattern, except for Avail-N, Avail-B and SQIMDS . Overall, unfavorable soil quality indicators, including rich in Avail-P, deficient in Avail-Ca, -Mg and -B, soil acidification and high altitude, were considered to be limiting factors for pomelo production. CONCLUSION: The soil chemical quality in pomelo orchards is generally low, indicating that integrated management by controlling acidification, reducing planting altitude, regulating fertilization and monitoring soil properties is required for sustainable pomelo production. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: As a heavy metal, manganese (Mn) can be toxic to plants. Stylo (Stylosanthes) is an important tropical legume that exhibits tolerance to high levels of Mn. However, little is known about the adaptive responses of stylo to Mn toxicity. Thus, this study integrated both physiological and transcriptomic analyses of stylo subjected to Mn toxicity. RESULTS: Results showed that excess Mn treatments increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in leaves of stylo, resulting in the reduction of leaf chlorophyll concentrations and plant dry weight. In contrast, the activities of enzymes, such as peroxidase (POD), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), were significantly increased in stylo leaves upon treatment with increasing Mn levels, particularly Mn levels greater than 400 µM. Transcriptome analysis revealed 2471 up-regulated and 1623 down-regulated genes in stylo leaves subjected to Mn toxicity. Among them, a set of excess Mn up-regulated genes, such as genes encoding PAL, cinnamyl-alcohol dehydrogenases (CADs), chalcone isomerase (CHI), chalcone synthase (CHS) and flavonol synthase (FLS), were enriched in secondary metabolic processes based on gene ontology (GO) analysis. Numerous genes associated with transcription factors (TFs), such as genes belonging to the C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor, WRKY and MYB families, were also regulated by Mn in stylo leaves. Furthermore, the C2H2 and MYB transcription factors were predicted to be involved in the transcriptional regulation of genes that participate in secondary metabolism in stylo during Mn exposure. Interestingly, the activation of secondary metabolism-related genes probably resulted in increased levels of secondary metabolites, including total phenols, flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanidins. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, this study reveals the roles of secondary metabolism in the adaptive responses of stylo to Mn toxicity, which is probably regulated by specific transcription factors.

BACKGROUND: Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major constraints limiting plant growth, especially in acid soils. Stylosanthes (stylo) is a pioneer tropical legume with excellent adaptability to low P stress, but its underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. RESULTS: In this study, the physiological, molecular and metabolic changes in stylo responding to phosphate (Pi) starvation were investigated. Under low P condition, the growth of stylo root was enhanced, which was attributed to the up-regulation of expansin genes participating in root growth. Metabolic profiling analysis showed that a total of 256 metabolites with differential accumulations were identified in stylo roots response to P deficiency, which mainly included flavonoids, sugars, nucleotides, amino acids, phenylpropanoids and phenylamides. P deficiency led to significant reduction in the accumulation of phosphorylated metabolites (e.g., P-containing sugars, nucleotides and cholines), suggesting that internal P utilization was enhanced in stylo roots subjected to low P stress. However, flavonoid metabolites, such as kaempferol, daidzein and their glycoside derivatives, were increased in P-deficient stylo roots. Furthermore, the qRT-PCR analysis showed that a set of genes involved in flavonoids synthesis were found to be up-regulated by Pi starvation in stylo roots. In addition, the abundances of phenolic acids and phenylamides were significantly increased in stylo roots during P deficiency. The increased accumulation of the metabolites in stylo roots, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids and phenylamides, might facilitate P solubilization and cooperate with beneficial microorganisms in rhizosphere, and thus contributing to P acquisition and utilization in stylo. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that stylo plants cope with P deficiency by modulating root morphology, scavenging internal Pi from phosphorylated metabolites and increasing accumulation of flavonoids, phenolic acids and phenylamides. This study provides valuable insights into the complex responses and adaptive mechanisms of stylo roots to P deficiency.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), a state of sleep disorder, is characterized by repetitive apnea, chronic hypoxia, oxygen desaturation, and hypercapnia. Previous studies have revealed that intermittent hypoxia (IH) conditions in OSAS patients elicited neuron injury (especially in the hippocampus and cortex), leading to cognitive dysfunction, a significant and extraordinary complication of OSAS patients. The repeated courses of airway collapse and obstruction in OSAS patients resulted in apnea and arousal during sleep, leading to IH and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and subsequently contributing to the development of inflammation. IH-mediated inflammation could further trigger various types of cognitive dysfunction. Many researchers have found that, besides continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment and surgery, anti-inflammatory substances might alleviate IH-induced neurocognitive dysfunction. Clarifying the role of inflammation in IH-mediated cognitive impairment is crucial for potentially valuable therapies and future research in the related domain. The objective of this article was to critically review the relationship between inflammation and cognitive deficits in OSAS.

We have recently reported a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complex [OsVI(N)(NO2-L)(CN)3]- [HNO2-L = 2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)benzoxazole]. The excited state of this complex readily activates the strong C-H bonds of alkanes and arenes (Commun. Chem. 2019, 2, 40). In this work, we attempted to tune the excited-state properties of this complex by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand. The series of nitrido complexes were characterized by IR, UV/vis, 1H NMR, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of five of the nitrido compounds have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes have been investigated. The luminescence of these nitrido complexes in the solid state, in a CH2Cl2 solution, and in a CH2Cl2 solid matrix at 77 K glassy medium clearly shows that these emissions are due to 3LML'CT [L ligand to Os≡N] phosphorescence. The presence of strongly electron-withdrawing substituents in these complexes enhances the LML'CT emission. Our result demonstrates that the excited-state properties of this novel class of luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complexes can be fine-tuned by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand.
