RESUMO

Chinese Shang Ring adult male circumcision (SC) is a safe and effective procedure which is easy to learn and to perform. By a specially designed small device, male circumcision (MC) can be performed in 5 min. Compared with conventional adult MC (CC), SC has shorter operation time, less blood loss, less pain score, higher appearance satisfaction rate, and lower complication rate. SC was first developed in China. As recent studies have demonstrated that MC reduced the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection via vaginal intercourse in African countries, SC was introduced into Africa to fight HIV. Other sexually transmitted diseases such as human papillomavirus infection may also be prevented by SC. In conclusion, Chinese Shang Ring, a small device, provides an easy, quick, safe, and effective method to perform adult MC.

Vegetation canopy water content (VCWC) has widespread utility in agriculture, ecology and hydrology. Based on the PROSAIL model, a novel model for quantitative inversion of vegetation canopy water content using Hyperion hyperspectral data was explored. Firstly, characteristics of vegetation canopy reflection were investigated with the PROSAIL radiative transfer model, and it was showed that the first derivative at the right slope (980 - 1 070 nm) of the 970 nm water absorption feature (D98-1 070) was closely related to VCWC, and determination coefficient reached to 0.96. Then, bands 983, 993, 1 003, 1 013, 1 023, 1 033, 1 043, 1 053 and 1 063 nm of Hyperion data were selected to calculate D980-1 070, and VCWC was estimated using the proposed method. Finally, the retrieval result was verified using field measured data in Yingke oasis of the Heihe basin. It indicated that the mean relative error was 12.5%, RMSE was within 0.1 kg x m(-2) and the proposed model was practical and reliable. This study provides a more efficient way for obtaining VCWC of large area.

PURPOSE: We investigated the safety and efficacy of Shang Ring™ male circumcision and conventional sleeve resection circumcision in a randomized study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the same period, 479 cases of Shang Ring circumcision and 354 of sleeve resection circumcision were performed. Complete followup data were evaluated on the 2 groups. Operative time, pain score, blood loss, postoperative complications, wound healing time and treatment costs were compared. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in average age and foreskin status between the 2 groups preoperatively (p >0.05). Compared to the conventional group, there were shorter operative time, less blood loss and a lower intraoperative pain score in the ring group (p <0.05). In addition, ring male circumcision showed a lower complication rate than conventional circumcision (6.89% vs 13.28%, p = 0.002). However, wound healing time in the ring group was longer than in the conventional group (mean ± SD 19.86 ± 5.24 vs 13.42 ± 2.35 days, p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Shang Ring male circumcision is a safe, efficient procedure with a relatively low complication rate and high patient satisfaction. It may be worthwhile to popularize this method, especially in countries where the general population has low to limited resources.

Objective: To investigate the nutritional risk, malnutrition, severe malnutrition, and malnutrition prevalence of different stages in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with and without diabetes mellitus using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), and to analyze the causes of malnutrition and to improve the clinical outcomes of patients for early intervention. Methods: A total of 683 patients with CKD who were hospitalized in our hospital from January 2020 to January 2021 were enrolled and divided into subgroups 1 to 5 according to whether they were complicated with diabetes and glomerular filtration rate. Using the second step of the malnutrition (GLIM) diagnostic tool and 2 previously commonly used malnutrition assessment methods (body mass index <18.5 kg/m2 with poor general condition, 3 points for nutritional deficiency in nutritional risk screening), combined with clinical research on the main causes of malnutrition, the intervention measures were discussed. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was 16.7% (114/683) in the patients included in the survey using the diagnostic criteria of malnutrition (GLIM) (excluding whole body muscle mass index). The prevalence of malnutrition in CKD patients with and without diabetes was 23.7% and 12.6%, respectively. The overall prevalence rate of severe malnutrition was 14.2%, and the prevalence rates of those with and without diabetes were 19.0% and 11.4%, respectively; the results of the two methods of malnutrition assessment showed that the prevalence of malnutrition in CKD patients with diabetes was higher than that in the uncombined group. There was no severe malnutrition in patients with CKD stages 1 and 2. From CKD stage 3 onwards, the severe malnutrition in the diabetic group was significantly higher than that in the uncombined group. Conclusion: With the progression of CKD, the incidence of malnutrition also gradually increased, indicating that malnutrition is related to primary diseases and concomitant diseases. Attention should be paid to the malnutrition of CKD patients with diabetes, and clinical medical staff need to pay early attention to various diseases that lead to the progression of CKD, such as diabetes, primary nephropathy, and other factors, to prevent complications and delay the progression of CKD.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the peptidylarginine deiminase IV (PADI4) and HLA-DRB1 shared epitope (SE) alleles with rheumatoid arthritis(RA) in a Chinese population. METHODS: Four exonic SNPs of the PADI4 gene (PADI 4_89*A/G, PADI 4_90*C/T, PADI 4_92*C/G and PADI 4_104*C/T) were genotyped in 67 unrelated patients with RA and 81 healthy controls, using cDNA sequencing and T vector cloning. HLA-DRB 1*01, *04 and *10 subtypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction with sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP). RESULTS: The distributions of the 4 SNPs were different in the two groups, and increased RA susceptibility was significantly associated with the minor alleles of PADI 4_89*G (P was 0.023), PADI 4_90*T (P was 0.004), PADI 4_104*T (P was 0.003), and the haplotypes carrying the 4 minor alleles (P was 0.008). HLA-DRB1 SE alleles are composed of HLA-DRB 1*0101, *0102, *0401, *0404, *0405, *0408, *0409, *0410 and *1001. Individuals carrying the SE alleles were associated with increased RA susceptibility (P was 0.002). Individuals carrying both the SE alleles and minor alleles of the 4 SNPs were more susceptible to RA than individuals carrying neither the minor SNP alleles nor the SE alleles. CONCLUSION: The PADI4 SNPs and haplotypes are associated with RA susceptibility in Chinese. HLA-DRB1 shared epitope is also an important risky factor for RA. There may exist certain synergistic effect between the PADI4 minor alleles and the HLA-DRB1 shared epitope.

BACKGROUND: The distal radius fracture is one of the common clinical fractures. At present, there are no reports regarding application of the finite element method in studying the mechanism of Colles fracture and the biomechanical behavior when using splint fixation. OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of Colles fracture and the biomechanical behavior when using different fixed splints. METHODS: Based on the CT scanning images of forearm for a young female volunteer, by using model construction technology combined with RPOE and ANSYS software, a 3-D distal radius fracture forearm finite element model with a real shape and bioactive materials is built. The material tests are performed to obtain the mechanical properties of the paper-based splint, the willow splint and the anatomical splint. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results to verify the correctness of the presented model. Based on the verified model, the stress distribution of different tissues are analyzed. Finally, the clinical tests are performed to observe and verify that the anatomical splint is the best fit for human body. RESULTS: Using the three kinds of splints, the transferred bone stress focus on the distal radius and ulna, which is helpful to maintain the stability of fracture. Also the stress is accumulated in the distal radius which may be attributed to flexion position. Such stress distribution may be helpful to maintain the ulnar declination. By comparing the simulation results with the experimental observations, the anatomical splint has the best fitting to the limb, which can effectively avoid the local compression. CONCLUSION: The anatomical splint is the most effective for fixing and curing the fracture. The presented model can provide theoretical basis and technical guide for further investigating mechanism of distal radius fracture and clinical application of anatomical splint.

Alginate nanofibers assembled with silver nanoparticles throughout the whole nanofiber were fabricated by three steps including electrospinning of Na-alginate nanofibers, ion exchange between the sodium and silver ions, and in situ reduction of silver nanoparticles. The content, distribution, and size of the nanoparticles are controllable by tuning reaction conditions. Ag/alginate nanofibers exhibit good humidity sensitivity in a wide humidity range from 20% ambient relative humidity (RH) to 85% RH. Interestingly, these humidity sensors can be attached to a 3M-9001V mask for monitoring human breath during exercise and emotion changes, and this smart mask exhibits accurate and continuous human breath tracking, no matter how fast or slow as well as how deep or shallow is the human breathing. The obtained frequencies of respiration during normal, running, delight, and sadness conditions were 16, 13, 14, and 8 times per minute, respectively. Moreover, the signal waveform obtained under emotion changes is distinguishable, implying its potential applications in lie detection and interrogation. Thanks to this smart mask, it could accurately capture the rate and depth of respiration, providing an effective, low-cost, and convenient approach for tracking respiration, and it was utilized as smart fabrics in avoiding sleep apnea.

Electrospinning provides an effective method for generating nanofibers from solution of carboxymethyl chitosan/polyoxyethylene oxide (CMCS/PEO). The goal of this work is to explore the potential application of electrospun CMCS/PEO nanofiber membrane in fruit fresh-keeping. The microstructure, antibacterial activity, hydrophilia, and air permeability of the nanofiber membrane have been tested. For comparison, the fresh-keeping effects of commercial cling wrap and CMCS/PEO nanofiber membranes on strawberries' rotting rate and weight loss rate have been studied. The results indicate that the electrospun CMCS/PEO membrane could effectively avoid water loss in strawberries and has a remarkable effect to prolong strawberries' shelf life due to its breathability and antibacterial activity. In addition, the composite CMCS/PEO, nanofiber membrane is non-poisonous and edible, which can be used in food industry.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relation between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression and biologic behavior of ovarian carcinoma. METHODS: The level of COX-2 protein expression was detected by Western Blot assay in 54 biopsy specimens from ovarian serous tumor patients and 10 normal ovarian samples. RESULTS: The level of COX-2 protein expression and relative quantity in ovarian serous carcinoma (81.8%, 20.08 +/- 3.53) were statistically higher than those in the benign ovarian serous tumor (0, 15.04 +/- 0.12) and in the normal ovary (0, 15.33 +/- 0.60) (P < 0.05). The level of COX-2 protein expression and relative quantity in borderline ovarian serous tumor (90.0%, 20.61 +/- 3.03) were statistically higher than those in benign ovarian serous tumor and the normal ovary (P < 0.05). The level of COX-2 protein expression and relative quantity were not significantly different from ovarian serous carcinoma and borderline ovarian serous tumor (P > 0.05); as they were between the benign ovarian serous tumor and the normal ovary (P > 0.05). The level of COX-2 protein expression and relative quantity were not significantly different among different clinical stages (I + II and III + IV), different histological grades, with or without ascites or lymphatic metastasis either. CONCLUSION: COX-2 overexpression may be significantly related to the oncogenesis and development of ovarian serous carcinoma, which may be an early diagnostic parameter and, hence, an attractive target for chemopreventive strategy in the treatment of ovarian serous carcinoma.

The serum levels of Zn, Cu, cholesterol (Ch) and triglyceride (TG) were determined in 44 patients with hypertension complicated with hyperlipemia, 42 patients with hypertension (HP) and 30 healthy controls by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and automatic biochemical analytical instrument of reagent kit. It was found that the contents of Zn, Ch, TG and Zn/Cu ratio in hypertension complicated with hyperlipemia were significantly higher than in HP and control, while Cu in hypertension complicated with hyperlipemia was significantly lower than in HP and control. The contents of Zn, Ch, TG and Zn/Cu ratio in hypertension were significantly increased. It is suggested that hypertension complicated with hyperlipemia is closely related with Zn and Cu.

Batch adsorption experiments were conducted for the adsorption of Cd (II) ions from aqueous solution by bamboo charcoal. The results showed that the adsorption of Cd (II) ions was very fast initially and the equilibrium time was 6h. High pH (>or=8.0) was favorable for the adsorption and removal of Cd (II) ions. Higher initial Cd concentrations led to lower removal percentages but higher adsorption capacity. As the adsorbent dose increased, the removal of Cd increased, while the adsorption capacity decreased. Adsorption kinetics of Cd (II) ions onto bamboo charcoal could be best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption behavior of Cd (II) ions fitted Langmuir, Temkin and Freundlich isotherms well, but followed Langmuir isotherm most precisely, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 12.08 mg/g. EDS analysis confirmed that Cd (II) was adsorbed onto bamboo charcoal. This study demonstrated that bamboo charcoal could be used for the removal of Cd (II) ions in water treatment.

An in situ electrokinetic remediation technique was designed by combining the uniform electrokinetic technology with a new-type of bamboo charcoal as adsorbent. A bench-scale experiment was conducted to investigate the application of this technique for simultaneous removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and Cd from a sandy loam at different periodic polarity-reversals. The contaminated soil was artificially spiked with 100 mg/kg 2,4-DCP and 500 mg/kg Cd. Two modes of polarity-reversal intervals of 12 and 24 h were included. After 10.5 d of operation, about 75.97% of Cd and 54.92% of 2,4-DCP were removed from soil at intervals of 24 h, whilst only 40.13% of Cd and 24.98% of 2,4-DCP were removed at intervals of 12 h. Soil water contents under two operation modes both significantly decreased, but evenly distributed spatially. Soil pH values under two operation modes were all maintained in the range from 7.2 to 7.4, close to the initial value. The electricity consumption per day was 12.24 and 11.61 kWh/m(3)/d, respectively at polarity-reversal intervals of 12 and 24 h. In conclusion, at polarity-reversal interval of 24 h, electroremediation combined with activated bamboo charcoal was effective in simultaneous removal of 2,4-DCP and Cd from soil. Our results indicate a promising potential in in situ electroremediation of soils co-contaminated with organics and heavy metals.

BACKGROUND: Although glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (G6PI), anti-G6PI antibodies and G6PI-containing immune complexes (G6PI-CIC) have proved high expression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), comprehensive evaluation of the G6PI-derived markers, G6PI antigen, anti-G6PI Abs, G6PI-CIC and G6PI mRNA, in the diagnosis of RA remains necessary. METHODS: We measured G6PI antigen, anti-G6PI Abs, C1q/G6PI-CIC as well as anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP Abs) in serum and concomitantly synovial fluid (SF) by ELISA in RA, other rheumatic diseases and healthy controls. The G6PI mRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was assessed with real-time PCR. RESULTS: As compared with non-RA patients, RA patients had increased levels of G6PI antigen, anti-G6PI Abs, C1q/G6PI-CIC and G6PI mRNA expression in sera or PBMCs, and increased levels of G6PI and C1q/G6PI-CIC in SF. The serum G6PI levels in RA patients positively correlated with anti-G6PI Abs, C1q/G6PI-CIC, G6PI mRNA, anti-CCP Abs, RF, CRP and ESR, respectively. The area under curve analyses demonstrated that serum G6PI had the best discriminating power for RA and active RA followed by C1q/G6PI-CIC, anti-G6PI Abs and G6PI mRNA. The simultaneous use of serum G6PI and anti-CCP Abs assays in the form of either of them tested positive gave improved sensitivities of 88.1% for RA and 95.8% for active RA. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the elevated expression of all G6PI-derived markers in RA, the serum G6PI has the best discriminating power among the four G6PI-derived markers. The serum G6PI determination either alone or in combination with anti-CCP Abs improves the diagnosis of RA.

By the methods of field survey and soaking extraction, the storage, water-holding capacity, water-holding rate, and water-absorption rate of the litters in Larix principis-ruprechtii, Larix kaempferi, Picea asperate, and Picea abies plantations in west Qinling Mountains were studied. The results showed that the litter storage in the four similar aged coniferous forests decreased in the order of P. asperate (29.81 t x hm(-2)) > P. abies (26.17 t x hm(-2)) > L. kaempferi (13.30 t x hm(-2)) > L. ruprechtii (8.46 t x hm(-2)). The water-holding capacity and water-holding rate of the litters at different decomposition degree changed logarithmically with soaking time while the water-absorption rate assumed a power function, but all the test water-holding characteristics had less correlation with forest type and litter decomposition degree. Under the four coniferous forests, the litters in semi-decomposed layer had a stronger water-holding capability than those in decomposed layer, and the water-holding capability of the litters under larch forest was stronger than that under spruce forest.

The characteristics of migration and its influencing factor of cadmium in sandy loam soil by uniform electrokinetics as well as the adsorption property by a new material-bamboo charcoal were investigated through bench-scale experiments, and the feasibility of using electrokinetic technique combined with the newly developed bamboo charcoal for remediation of cadmium contaminated soils was analyzed as well. The results show that the bamboo charcoal is good adsorption material which has comparably strong adsorption effect on Cd, bearing potential in future use, which could be simulated by both Freundlich and Langmuir models (R2 > 0.96). The migration rates of cadmium in sandy loam were high up to 0. 6786 - 0.6875cm/h under an electric gradient of 1.0V/cm, depending upon the concentration of cadmium and the distribution of electric field density. Electrokinetics effectively transported the heavy metal in the soil. In the new electrokinetic tech combining the bamboo charcoal with the same electric gradient above under the polarity reversal period of 48 hours, the cadmium in the soil could be wiped off with high efficiency (removal efficiency 79.6% in 12 days) and the pH together with water content could be well retained. The electric current in the process changed periodically according to the reversal. As a new technique, the electrokinetic movement-bamboo charcoal adsorption holds high potential in future use.
