RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Positive, negative and disorganised psychotic symptom dimensions are associated with clinical and developmental variables, but differing definitions complicate interpretation. Additionally, some variables have had little investigation. AIMS: To investigate associations of psychotic symptom dimensions with clinical and developmental variables, and familial aggregation of symptom dimensions, in multiple samples employing the same definitions. METHOD: We investigated associations between lifetime symptom dimensions and clinical and developmental variables in two twin and two general psychosis samples. Dimension symptom scores and most other variables were from the Operational Criteria Checklist. We used logistic regression in generalised linear mixed models for combined sample analysis (n = 875 probands). We also investigated correlations of dimensions within monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs concordant for psychosis (n = 96 pairs). RESULTS: Higher symptom scores on all three dimensions were associated with poor premorbid social adjustment, never marrying/cohabiting and earlier age at onset, and with a chronic course, most strongly for the negative dimension. The positive dimension was also associated with Black and minority ethnicity and lifetime cannabis use; the negative dimension with male gender; and the disorganised dimension with gradual onset, lower premorbid IQ and substantial within twin-pair correlation. In secondary analysis, disorganised symptoms in MZ twin probands were associated with lower premorbid IQ in their co-twins. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm associations that dimensions share in common and strengthen the evidence for distinct associations of co-occurring positive symptoms with ethnic minority status, negative symptoms with male gender and disorganised symptoms with substantial familial influences, which may overlap with influences on premorbid IQ.

Calixarenes, as novel organic materials, can play a pivotal role in the development of high-performance nonlinear optical materials due to the ease of design and fabrication. In this study, DFT simulations were employed to investigate the geometric, electronic, and NLO responses of calix[4]arene doped with Li3O, Na3O, and K3O superalkalis. The computed values of the vertical ionization energies and interaction energies indicate the chemical and thermodynamic stabilities of the targeted M3O@calix[4]arene complexes. The corresponding energy gaps (2.01 to 3.49 eV) are notably reduced, indicating the semiconductor nature of the materials. Surprisingly, the M3O@calix[4]arene complexes exhibit transparency in the UV/visible range as the absorption peaks are shifted in the near infrared (NIR) region. The highest values of 5.9 × 105 a.u. and 2.3 × 108 a.u. for the respective first and second hyperpolarizabilities are observed for Na3O@calix[4]arene. Furthermore, the Na3O@calix[4]arene complex exhibits maximum values of 2.3 × 105 a.u. for second harmonic generation (SHG) and (K3O@calix[4]arene) 2.3 × 106 a.u. for the electro-optical Pockels effect (EOPE) at 1064 nm. Similarly, approximations are made for the dynamic second hyperpolarizability coefficients (EOKE and EFISHG) at different wavelengths. Notably, the Na3O@calix[4]arene complex demonstrates the highest quadratic nonlinear refractive index (n2) of 9.5 × 10-15 cm2 W-1 at 1064 nm. This research paves the way for the development of stable calix[4]arenes doped with superalkalis, leading to an improved nonlinear optical (NLO) response.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus and its mutations have affected human health globally and created significant danger for the health of people all around the world. To cure this virus, the human Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptor, the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), and spike proteins were found to be likely candidates for the synthesis of novel therapeutic drug. In the past, proteins were capable of engaging in interaction with a wide variety of ligands, including both manmade and plant-derived small molecules. Pyrus communis L., Ginko bibola, Carica papaya, Syrian rue, and Pimenta dioica were some of the plant species that were studied for their tendency to interact with SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) in this research project (6LU7). This scenario investigates the geometry, electronic, and thermodynamic properties computationally. Assessing the intermolecular forces of phytochemicals with the targets of the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro spike protein (SP) resulted in the recognition of a compound, kaempferol, as the most potent binding ligand, -7.7 kcal mol-1. Kaempferol interacted with ASP-187, CYS-145, SER-144, LEU 141, MET-165, and GLU-166 residues. Through additional molecular dynamic simulations, the stability of ligand-protein interactions was assessed for 100 ns. GLU-166 remained intact with 33% contact strength with phenolic OH group. We noted a change in torsional conformation, and the molecular dynamics simulation showed a potential variation in the range from 3.36 to 7.44 against a 45-50-degree angle rotation. SAR, pharmacokinetics, and drug-likeness characteristic investigations showed that kaempferol may be the suitable candidate to serve as a model for designing and developing new anti-COVID-19 medicines.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia endophenotypes may help elucidate functional effects of genetic risk variants in multiply affected consanguineous families that segregate recessive risk alleles of large effect size. We studied the association between a schizophrenia risk locus involving a 6.1Mb homozygous region on chromosome 13q22-31 in a consanguineous multiplex family and cognitive functioning, haemodynamic response and white matter integrity using neuroimaging. METHODS: We performed CANTAB neuropsychological testing on four affected family members (all homozygous for the risk locus), ten unaffected family members (seven homozygous and three heterozygous) and ten healthy volunteers, and tested neuronal responses on fMRI during an n-back working memory task, and white matter integrity on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) on four affected and six unaffected family members (four homozygous and two heterozygous) and three healthy volunteers. For cognitive comparisons we used a linear mixed model (Kruskal-Wallis) test, followed by posthoc Dunn's pairwise tests with a Bonferroni adjustment. For fMRI analysis, we counted voxels exceeding the p < 0.05 corrected threshold. DTI analysis was observational. RESULTS: Family members with schizophrenia and unaffected family members homozygous for the risk haplotype showed attention (p < 0.01) and working memory deficits (p < 0.01) compared with healthy controls; a neural activation laterality bias towards the right prefrontal cortex (voxels reaching p < 0.05, corrected) and observed lower fractional anisotropy in the anterior cingulate cortex and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. CONCLUSIONS: In this family, homozygosity at the 13q risk locus was associated with impaired cognition, white matter integrity, and altered laterality of neural activation.
RESUMO
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for a series of supramolecular assemblies containing azobenzene (Azo-X where X = I, Br and H) and alkoxystilbazole subunits to evaluate their electronic, linear and nonlinear optical properties. These assemblies are derivatives of azobenzene, obtained by the substitution of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups onto the molecular skeleton. The interaction energies (Eint) of all the designed supramolecular complexes (IA-IF, IIA-IIF and IIIA-IIIF) range from -1.0 kcal mol-1 to -7.7 kcal mol-1. The electronic properties of these hydrogen/halogen bond driven supramolecular assemblies such as vertical ionization energies (VIE), HOMO-LUMO energy gap (GH-L), excitation energies, density of states (DOS) and natural population (NPA) analyses were also computed. The non-covalent interaction index (NCI) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses were also performed to validate the nature of inter- and intra-molecular interactions in these complexes. A substantial enhancement in the first hyperpolarizability (ß0) values of the designed supramolecular complexes was observed, which is driven by the charge transfer from the pyridyl moiety of alkoxystilbazole to Azo-X. The highest ß0 value of 1.3 × 104 au was observed for the supramolecular complex of p-nitro substituted azobenzene with alkoxystilbazole (ID complex). Moreover, the results show that the substitution of electron-withdrawing groups on Azo-X can also bring larger ß0 values for such complexes. It was confirmed on a purely theoretical basis that both the types of noncovalent interactions present and the substituent group incorporated influence the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of the systems. Furthermore, the ß0 values of the E (trans) and Z (cis) forms were compared to demonstrate the two-way photoinduced switching mechanism.
RESUMO
Among the three main divergent lineages of gray wolf (Canis lupus), the Holarctic lineage is the most widespread and best-studied, particularly in North America and Europe. Less is known about Tibetan (also called Himalayan) and Indian wolf lineages in southern Asia, especially in areas surrounding Pakistan where all three lineages are thought to meet. Given the endangered status of the Indian wolf in neighboring India and unclear southwestern boundary of the Tibetan wolf range, we conducted mitochondrial and genome-wide sequencing of wolves from Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan. Sequences of the mitochondrial D-loop region of 81 wolves from Pakistan indicated contact zones between Holarctic and Indian lineages across the northern and western mountains of Pakistan. Reduced-representation genome sequencing of 8 wolves indicated an east-to-west cline of Indian to Holarctic ancestry, consistent with a contact zone between these two lineages in Pakistan. The western boundary of the Tibetan lineage corresponded to the Ladakh region of India's Himalayas with a narrow zone of admixture spanning this boundary from the Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan into Ladakh, India. Our results highlight the conservation significance of Pakistan's wolf populations, especially the remaining populations in Sindh and Southern Punjab that represent the highly endangered Indian lineage.
RESUMO
Weeds are one of the most harmful agricultural pests that have a significant impact on crops. Weeds are responsible for higher production costs due to crop waste and have a significant impact on the global agricultural economy. The importance of this problem has promoted the research community in exploring the use of technology to support farmers in the early detection of weeds. Artificial intelligence (AI) driven image analysis for weed detection and, in particular, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) using images from crop fields have been widely used in the literature for detecting various types of weeds that grow alongside crops. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review (SLR) on current state-of-the-art DL techniques for weed detection. Our SLR identified a rapid growth in research related to weed detection using DL since 2015 and filtered 52 application papers and 8 survey papers for further analysis. The pooled results from these papers yielded 34 unique weed types detection, 16 image processing techniques, and 11 DL algorithms with 19 different variants of CNNs. Moreover, we include a literature survey on popular vanilla ML techniques (e.g., SVM, random forest) that have been widely used prior to the dominance of DL. Our study presents a detailed thematic analysis of ML/DL algorithms used for detecting the weed/crop and provides a unique contribution to the analysis and assessment of the performance of these ML/DL techniques. Our study also details the use of crops associated with weeds, such as sugar beet, which was one of the most commonly used crops in most papers for detecting various types of weeds. It also discusses the modality where RGB was most frequently used. Crop images were frequently captured using robots, drones, and cell phones. It also discusses algorithm accuracy, such as how SVM outperformed all machine learning algorithms in many cases, with the highest accuracy of 99 percent, and how CNN with its variants also performed well with the highest accuracy of 99 percent, with only VGGNet providing the lowest accuracy of 84 percent. Finally, the study will serve as a starting point for researchers who wish to undertake further research in this area.

In this study, for the first time, boron oxide nanoflake is analyzed as drug carrier for favipiravir using computational studies. The thermodynamic stability of the boron oxide and favipiravir justifies the strong interaction between both species. Four orientations are investigated for the interaction between the favipiravir and the B3O3 nanoflake. The Eint of the most stable orientation is -26.98 kcal/mol, whereas the counterpoise-corrected energy is -22.59 kcal/mol. Noncovalent interaction index (NCI) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses are performed to obtain insights about the behavior and the types of interactions that occur between B3O3 nanoflake and favipiravir. The results indicate the presence of hydrogen bonding between the hydrogen in the favipiravir and the oxygen in the B3O3 nanoflake in the most stable complex (FAV@B3O3-C1). The electronic properties are investigated through frontier molecular orbital analysis, dipole moments and chemical reactivity descriptors. These parameters showed the significant activity of B3O3 for favipiravir. NBO charge analysis transfer illustrated the charge transfer between the two species, and UV-VIS analysis confirmed the electronic excitation. Our work suggested a suitable drug carrier system for the antiviral drug favipiravir, which can be considered by the experimentalist for better drug delivery systems.

The antioxidant activities of NiONPs were investigated using DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The NiONPs were demonstrated to have much better antioxidant potentials in terms of % DPPH scavenging (93.5%) and total antioxidant capacity (81%). Anticancer activity was also performed using HUH7 and HEP-G2 cancer cell lines and has shown significant potential with IC50 values of 18.45 µg/mL and 14.84 µg/mL, respectively. Further, the NiONPs were evaluated against Lesihmania tropica parasites and have shown strong antileishmanial potentials. The EA-NiONPs also showed excellent enzyme inhibition activities; protein kinase (19.4 mm) and alpha-amylase (51%). In conclusion, NiONPs have shown significant results against different biological assays. In the future, we suggest various in vivo activities for EA-NiONPs using different animal models to further unveil the biological and biomedical potentials.

The toxicity of transition metals, including copper(II), manganese(II), iron(II), zinc(II), hexavalent chromium, and cobalt(II), at elevated concentrations presents a significant threat to living organisms. Thus, the development of efficient sensors capable of detecting these metals is of utmost importance. This study explores the utilization of two-dimensional nitrogenated holey graphene (C2N) nanosheet as a sensor for toxic transition metals. The C2N nanosheet's periodic shape and standard pore size render it well suited for adsorbing transition metals. The interaction energies between transition metals and C2N nanosheets were calculated in both gas and solvent phases and were found to primarily result from physisorption, except for manganese and iron which exhibited chemisorption. To assess the interactions, we employed NCI, SAPT0, and QTAIM analyses, as well as FMO and NBO analysis, to examine the electronic properties of the TM@C2N system. Our results indicated that the adsorption of copper and chromium significantly reduced the HOMO-LUMO energy gap of C2N and significantly increased its electrical conductivity, confirming the high sensitivity of C2N towards copper and chromium. The sensitivity test further confirmed the superior sensitivity and selectivity of C2N towards copper. These findings offer valuable insight into the design and development of sensors for the detection of toxic transition metals.
RESUMO
Switchable nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have widespread applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Thermo-switches generate many times higher NLO responses as compared to photo-switches. Herein, we have investigated the geometric, electronic, and nonlinear optical properties of spiropyranes thermochromes via DFT methods. The stabilities of close and open isomers of selected spiropyranes are investigated through relative energies. Electronic properties are studied through frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) analysis. The lower HOMO-LUMO energy gap and lower excitation energy are observed for open isomers of spiropyranes, which imparts the large first hyperpolarizability value. The delocalization of π-electrons, asymmetric distribution and elongated conjugation system are dominant factors for high hyperpolarizability values of open isomers. For deep understanding, we also analyzed the frequency-dependent hyperpolarizability and refractive index of considered thermochromes. The NLO response increased significantly with increasing frequency. Among all those compounds, the highest refractive index value is observed for the open isomer of the spiropyran 1 (1.99 × 10-17 cm2/W). Molecular absorption analysis confirmed the electronic excitation in the open isomers compared to closed isomers. The results show that reversible thermochromic compounds act as excellent NLO molecular switches and can be used to design advanced electronics.
RESUMO
Apart from environmental implications, the extreme toxicity of cyanide can lead to sudden human death upon prolonged exposure to it. Hence, rapid and low-level on-site detection of cyanide has earned paramount significance in the present era. Therefore, an AIEE active and piezofluorochromic Schiff base (probe 2) was synthesized which exhibited highly selective fluorescence enhancement based nanoscale (LOD; 6.17 nM) detection of CN-. The interaction mode was attributed to the deprotonation of the probe by the cyanide that was confirmed through 1H NMR titration, pH, theoretical studies, and switchable fluorescence response upon the addition of HCl. Advantageously, probe 2 displayed solid and vapor phase recognition of cyanide which is the first of its kind as far as we know. The excellent sensing potential of the probe was satisfactorily applied for the detection of cyanide in food, natural soil, and industrial wastewater. Additionally, probe 2 showed an immediate colorimetric response towards cyanide which was favorably integrated through a smartphone. Finally, the switchable fluorescence response of the probe was used to design an INHIBIT logic gate. Therefore, the multifunctional probe 2 displayed excellent practical potential for cyanide detection which was the ultimate goal of our work.

An increase in ambient temperature throughout the twenty-first century has been described as a "worldwide threat" for crop production. Due to their sessile lifestyles, plants have evolved highly sophisticated and complex heat stress response (HSR) mechanisms to respond to higher temperatures. The HSR allows plants to minimize the damages caused by heat stress (HS), thus enabling cellular protection. HSR is crucial for their lifecycle and yield, particularly for plants grown in the field. At the cellular level, HSR involves the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and other stress-responsive proteins to counter the negative effects of HS. The expression of most HSPs is transcriptionally regulated by heat shock transcription factors (HSFs). HSFs are a group of evolutionary conserved regulatory proteins present in all eukaryotes and regulate various stress responses and biological processes in plants. In recent years, significant progress has been made in deciphering the complex regulatory network of HSFs, and several HSFs not only from model plants but also from major crops have been functionally characterized. Therefore, this review explores the progress made in this fascinating research area and debates the further potential to breed thermotolerant crop cultivars through the modulation of HSF networks. Furthermore, we discussed the role of HSFs in plant HS tolerance in a class-specific manner and shed light on their functional diversity, which is evident from their mode of action. Additionally, some research gaps have been highlighted concerning class-specific manners.

KEY MESSAGE: Plant heat stress response is a multi-factorial trait that is precisely regulated by the complex web of transcription factors from various families that modulate heat stress responsive gene expression. Global warming due to climate change affects plant growth and development throughout its life cycle. Adds to this, the frequent occurrence of heat waves is drastically reducing the global crop yield. Molecular plant scientists can help crop breeders by providing genetic markers associated with stress resistance. Plant heat stress response (HSR), however, is a multi-factorial trait and using a single stress resistance trait might not be ideal to develop thermotolerant crops. Transcription factors participate in regulation of plant biological processes and environmental stress responses. Recent studies have revealed that plant HSR is precisely regulated by the complex web of transcription factors from various families. These transcription factors enhance plant heat stress tolerance by regulating the expression level of several stress-responsive genes independently or in cross talk with different other transcription factors. This review explores how signaling pathways triggered by heat stress are regulated by multiple transcription factor families. To our knowledge, we for the first time analyze the role of major transcription factor families in plant HSR along with their regulatory mechanisms. In the end, we will also discuss the potential of emerging technologies to improve thermotolerance in plants.

Optical polarimetry have been extensively used for the non-invasive assessment of biological tissues. However, the knowledge regarding differences in polarimetric signatures of different tissue pathologies is very scattered, confounding the deduction of a global trend of the polarimetric variables for healthy and pathological tissues. The purpose of this study was to bridge this gap. We conducted a rigorous online survey to collect all published studies that report the two most common polarimetric variables (i.e., depolarization and retardance) for any type of tissue pathology. A total of 101 studies describing the polarimetric assessment of tissues were collected, wherein 253 (i.e., nhuman = 149, nanimal = 104) different type of tissues were optically characterized. Most tissue samples (172/253) were investigated in ex vivo settings. The data showed 32 different types of tissues pathologies, where the most common pathology was cancer and its subtypes. The skin tissues were the most frequently explored tissues, followed by tissue samples from breast, colon, liver, and cervix. Although differences in polarimetric signatures of different tissue pathologies were summarized from the included studies, generalization of the results was hindered by the presentation of polarimetric data in a non-uniform format. The analyses presented in this study may provide an important reference for future polarimetric studies that conduct optical assessment of tissues at greater depth, particularly in the context of optical biopsy/digital staining.

Rapid increase in population and development in industry causes many problems such as microbial contaminations and chronic diseases such as diabetes. Materials synthesized at nanoscale are novel antidiabetic and antimicrobial agents. ZnO nanoparticles with macropores characteristics are synthesized by green methods. Turmeric, clove buds and green tea extracts are used as additives. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO nanoparticles and crystallinity was quit high in case of green tea extract. Sample synthesized with clove shows relatively higher crystallite size (10.64) which is pertaining to variation in Zn2+ and OH- ions. The nanoparticles are more or less spherical in nature, macropores and clustered together revealed by SEM images. Macroporosity of the sample was further confirmed by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The deep absorption band at 605 cm-1 in FTIR spectra attributed the wurtzite-type ZnO. The major dominating sharp peak was detected at 437 cm-1 in Raman spectra which is a feature of the wurtzite hexagonal phase ZnO. UV-Vis spectra showed red shift from wavelength 362 to 375 nm with different plant extracts. Impedance analysis showed a high dielectric constant and low tangent loss in case of green tea extract. ZnO synthesized using green tea exhibited ~ 95% α-glucosidase inhibition activity and 91% α-amylase inhibition activity. Antibacterial results revealed that synthesized ZnO nanoparticles showed activity against Bacillus subtilis and E. coli with inhibition zone 35 mm and 29 mm, respectively.

Orange (OR) is a DnaJ-like zinc finger protein with both nuclear and plastidial localizations. OR, and its orthologs, are highly conserved in flowering plants, sharing a characteristic C-terminal tandem 4× repeats of the CxxCxxxG signature. It was reported to trigger chromoplast biogenesis, promote carotenoid accumulation in plastids of non-pigmented tissues, and repress chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast biogenesis in the nucleus of de-etiolating cotyledons cells. Its ectopic overexpression was found to enhance plant resistance to abiotic stresses. Here, we report that the expression of OR in Arabidopsis thaliana was upregulated by drought treatment, and seedlings of the OR-overexpressing (OE) lines showed improved growth performance and survival rate under drought stress. Compared with the wild-type (WT) and OR-silencing (or) lines, drought-stressed OE seedlings possessed lower contents of reactive oxygen species (such as H2O2 and O2-), higher activities of both superoxide dismutase and catalase, and a higher level of proline content. Our enzymatic assay revealed a relatively higher activity of Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS), a rate-limiting enzyme for proline biosynthesis, in drought-stressed OE seedlings, compared with the WT and or lines. We further demonstrated that the P5CS activity could be enhanced by supplementing exogenous OR in our in vitro assays. Taken together, our results indicated a novel contribution of OR to drought tolerance, through its impact on proline biosynthesis.

Since 2012, the Middle East has seen a steady rise in the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). A fractional derivative of the non-singular Mittag-Leffler type is used in this research to conduct a mathematical analysis of the dynamics of MERS-CoV infection transmission. The dynamics of such a disease with an additional degree of freedom and non-singular behavior are discovered through the use of the aforementioned fractional operator, and this is one of the important components of our prepared paper. Using the concept of fixed point theory, the existence and uniqueness of solutions are demonstrated. The stability analysis is also tested with the help of the Ulam-Hyers approach, respectively. The numerical solution has been conducted by using the fractional Adams-Bashforth scheme. In the numerical simulation, all classes are demonstrated through the graphical presentation regarding the changing values of fractional-order at time t. The results at various fractional-order laying between (0,1] are drawn with the help of Matlab. We also provide a comparison of the proposed approach with that of the Caputo operator. The outcomes that were achieved illustrate that the considered scheme is highly methodical and very efficient compared to the Caputo fractional operator.
