RESUMO

PURPOSE: To (a) define multi-peak fat model-based effective in-phase echo times for quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in water-fat regions, (b) analyze the relationship between fat fraction, field map quantification bias and susceptibility bias, and (c) evaluate the susceptibility mapping performance of the proposed effective in-phase echoes in comparison to single-peak in-phase echoes and water-fat separation for regions where both water and fat are present. METHODS: Effective multipeak in-phase echo times for a bone marrow and a liver fat spectral model were derived from a single voxel simulation. A Monte Carlo simulation was performed to assess the field map estimation error as a function of fat fraction for the different in-phase echoes. Additionally, a phantom scan and in vivo scans in the liver, spine, and breast were performed and evaluated with respect to quantification accuracy. RESULTS: The use of single-peak in-phase echoes can introduce a worst-case susceptibility bias of 0.43 $$ 0.43 $$  ppm. The use of effective multipeak in-phase echoes shows a similar quantitative performance in the numerical simulation, the phantom and in all in vivo anatomies when compared to water-fat separation-based QSM. CONCLUSION: QSM based on the proposed effective multipeak in-phase echoes can alleviate the quantification bias present in QSM based on single-peak in-phase echoes. When compared to water-fat separation-based QSM the proposed effective in-phase echo times achieve a similar quantitative performance while drastically reducing the computational expense for field map estimation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To (a) develop a preconditioned water-fat-silicone total field inversion (wfsTFI) algorithm that directly estimates the susceptibility map from complex multi-echo data in the breast in the presence of silicone and to (b) evaluate the performance of wfsTFI for breast quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in silico and in vivo in comparison with formerly proposed methods. METHODS: Numerical simulations and in vivo multi-echo gradient echo breast measurements were performed to compare wfsTFI to a previously proposed field map-based linear total field inversion algorithm (lTFI) with and without the consideration of the chemical shift of silicone in the field map estimation step. Specifically, a simulation based on an in vivo scan and data from five patients were included in the analysis. RESULTS: In the simulation, wfsTFI is able to significantly decrease the normalized root mean square error from lTFI without (4.46) and with (1.77) the consideration of the chemical shift of silicone to 0.68. Both the in silico and in vivo wfsTFI susceptibility maps show reduced shadowing artifacts in local tissue adjacent to silicone, reduced streaking artifacts and no erroneous single voxels of diamagnetic susceptibility in proximity to silicone. CONCLUSION: The proposed wfsTFI method can automatically distinguish between subjects with and without silicone. Furthermore wfsTFI accounts for the presence of silicone in the QSM dipole inversion and allows for the robust estimation of susceptibility in proximity to silicone breast implants and hence allows the visualization of structures that would otherwise be dominated by artifacts on susceptibility maps.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This work was aimed at proposing a supervised learning-based method that directly synthesizes contrast-weighted images from the Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) data without performing quantitative mapping and spin-dynamics simulations. METHODS: To implement our direct contrast synthesis (DCS) method, we deploy a conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) framework with a multi-branch U-Net as the generator and a multilayer CNN (PatchGAN) as the discriminator. We refer to our proposed approach as N-DCSNet. The input MRF data are used to directly synthesize T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images through supervised training on paired MRF and target spin echo-based contrast-weighted scans. The performance of our proposed method is demonstrated on in vivo MRF scans from healthy volunteers. Quantitative metrics, including normalized root mean square error (nRMSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS), and Fréchet inception distance (FID), were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compare it with others. RESULTS: In-vivo experiments demonstrated excellent image quality with respect to that of simulation-based contrast synthesis and previous DCS methods, both visually and according to quantitative metrics. We also demonstrate cases in which our trained model is able to mitigate the in-flow and spiral off-resonance artifacts typically seen in MRF reconstructions, and thus more faithfully represent conventional spin echo-based contrast-weighted images. CONCLUSION: We present N-DCSNet to directly synthesize high-fidelity multicontrast MR images from a single MRF acquisition. This method can significantly decrease examination time. By directly training a network to generate contrast-weighted images, our method does not require any model-based simulation and therefore can avoid reconstruction errors due to dictionary matching and contrast simulation (code available at:https://github.com/mikgroup/DCSNet).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To (a) develop a preconditioned water-fat total field inversion (wfTFI) algorithm that directly estimates the susceptibility map from complex multi-echo gradient echo data for water-fat regions and to (b) evaluate the performance of the proposed wfTFI quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) method in comparison with a local field inversion (LFI) method and a linear total field inversion (TFI) method in the spine. METHODS: Numerical simulations and in vivo spine multi-echo gradient echo measurements were performed to compare wfTFI to an algorithm based on disjoint background field removal (BFR) and LFI and to a formerly proposed TFI algorithm. The data from 1 healthy volunteer and 10 patients with metastatic bone disease were included in the analysis. Clinical routine computed tomography (CT) images were used as a reference standard to distinguish osteoblastic from osteolytic changes. The ability of the QSM methods to distinguish osteoblastic from osteolytic changes was evaluated. RESULTS: The proposed wfTFI method was able to decrease the normalized root mean square error compared to the LFI and TFI methods in the simulation. The in vivo wfTFI susceptibility maps showed reduced BFR artifacts, noise amplification, and streaking artifacts compared to the LFI and TFI maps. wfTFI provided a significantly higher diagnostic confidence in differentiating osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions in the spine compared to the LFI method (p = .012). CONCLUSION: The proposed wfTFI method can minimize BFR artifacts, noise amplification, and streaking artifacts in water-fat regions and can thus better differentiate between osteoblastic and osteolytic changes in patients with metastatic disease compared to LFI and the original TFI method.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the second quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) reconstruction challenge (Oct 2019, Seoul, Korea) was to test the accuracy of QSM dipole inversion algorithms in simulated brain data. METHODS: A two-stage design was chosen for this challenge. The participants were provided with datasets of multi-echo gradient echo images synthesized from two realistic in silico head phantoms using an MR simulator. At the first stage, participants optimized QSM reconstructions without ground truth data available to mimic the clinical setting. At the second stage, ground truth data were provided for parameter optimization. Submissions were evaluated using eight numerical metrics and visual ratings. RESULTS: A total of 98 reconstructions were submitted for stage 1 and 47 submissions for stage 2. Iterative methods had the best quantitative metric scores, followed by deep learning and direct inversion methods. Priors derived from magnitude data improved the metric scores. Algorithms based on iterative approaches and total variation (and its derivatives) produced the best overall results. The reported results and analysis pipelines have been made public to allow researchers to compare new methods to the current state of the art. CONCLUSION: The synthetic data provide a consistent framework to test the accuracy and robustness of QSM algorithms in the presence of noise, calcifications and minor voxel dephasing effects. Total Variation-based algorithms produced the best results among all metrics. Future QSM challenges should assess whether this good performance with synthetic datasets translates to more realistic scenarios, where background fields and dipole-incompatible phase contributions are included.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To create a realistic in silico head phantom for the second QSM reconstruction challenge and for future evaluations of processing algorithms for QSM. METHODS: We created a digital whole-head tissue property phantom by segmenting and postprocessing high-resolution (0.64 mm isotropic), multiparametric MRI data acquired at 7 T from a healthy volunteer. We simulated the steady-state magnetization at 7 T using a Bloch simulator and mimicked a Cartesian sampling scheme through Fourier-based processing. Computer code for generating the phantom and performing the MR simulation was designed to facilitate flexible modifications of the phantom in the future, such as the inclusion of pathologies as well as the simulation of a wide range of acquisition protocols. Specifically, the following parameters and effects were implemented: TR and TE, voxel size, background fields, and RF phase biases. Diffusion-weighted imaging phantom data are provided, allowing future investigations of tissue-microstructure effects in phase and QSM algorithms. RESULTS: The brain part of the phantom featured realistic morphology with spatial variations in relaxation and susceptibility values similar to the in vivo setting. We demonstrated some of the phantom's properties, including the possibility of generating phase data with nonlinear evolution over TE due to partial-volume effects or complex distributions of frequency shifts within the voxel. CONCLUSION: The presented phantom and computer programs are publicly available and may serve as a ground truth in future assessments of the faithfulness of quantitative susceptibility reconstruction algorithms.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Introduce a method to estimate B0 -fluctuations based on the analysis of raw k-space data, without sequence modifications or external hardware, and correct for their detrimental effects in gradient-echo MRI. THEORY: Inconsistencies in multi-channel raw k-space data can be used to estimate B0 -fluctuations by exploiting coil-sensitivity information. METHODS: The proposed method, dubbed consistency navigation, is used to extract B0 -fluctuations from T2* -weighted 3D gradient-echo data. These results are compared with the results from an MR phase navigator and respiratory bellows. The spatial variation of the B0 -fluctuation amplitude is derived using the sensitivity maps of the coil array and compared with direct measurements based on dynamic 2D gradient-echo data. RESULTS: B0 -fluctuations derived from the consistency navigator and MR phase navigator are highly correlated. Images corrected for these fluctuations show marked improvements in homogeneity and tissue delineation. The spatial variation of the B0 -fluctuation amplitude follows closely the variation directly measured from time-resolved 2D scans. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the consistency navigator, an accurate estimation of the spatiotemporal characteristics of B0 -fluctuations and correction of T2* -weighted images has been demonstrated.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To develop a methodological framework to simultaneously measure R2* and magnetic susceptibility in trabecularized yellow bone marrow and to investigate the sensitivity of Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) for measuring trabecular bone density using a non-UTE multi-gradient echo sequence. METHODS: The ankle of 16 healthy volunteers and two patients was scanned using a time-interleaved multi-gradient-echo (TIMGRE) sequence. After field mapping based on water-fat separation methods and background field removal based on the Laplacian boundary value method, three different QSM dipole inversion schemes were implemented. Mean susceptibility values in regions of different trabecular bone density in the calcaneus were compared to the corresponding values in the R2* maps, bone volume to total volume ratios (BV/TV) estimated from high resolution imaging (in 14 subjects), and CT attenuation (in two subjects). In addition, numerical simulations were performed in a simplified trabecular bone model of randomly positioned spherical bone inclusions to verify and compare the scaling of R2* and susceptibility with BV/TV. RESULTS: Differences in calcaneus trabecularization were well depicted in susceptibility maps, in good agreement with high-resolution MR and CT images. Simulations and in vivo scans showed a linear relationship of measured susceptibility with BV/TV and R2* . The ankle in vivo results showed a strong linear correlation between susceptibility and R2* (R2  = 0.88, p < 0.001) with a slope and intercept of -0.004 and 0.2 ppm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A method for multi-paramteric mapping, including R2* -mapping and QSM was developed for measuring trabecularized yellow bone marrow, showing good sensitivity of QSM for measuring trabecular bone density.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the 2016 quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) reconstruction challenge was to test the ability of various QSM algorithms to recover the underlying susceptibility from phase data faithfully. METHODS: Gradient-echo images of a healthy volunteer acquired at 3T in a single orientation with 1.06 mm isotropic resolution. A reference susceptibility map was provided, which was computed using the susceptibility tensor imaging algorithm on data acquired at 12 head orientations. Susceptibility maps calculated from the single orientation data were compared against the reference susceptibility map. Deviations were quantified using the following metrics: root mean squared error (RMSE), structure similarity index (SSIM), high-frequency error norm (HFEN), and the error in selected white and gray matter regions. RESULTS: Twenty-seven submissions were evaluated. Most of the best scoring approaches estimated the spatial frequency content in the ill-conditioned domain of the dipole kernel using compressed sensing strategies. The top 10 maps in each category had similar error metrics but substantially different visual appearance. CONCLUSION: Because QSM algorithms were optimized to minimize error metrics, the resulting susceptibility maps suffered from over-smoothing and conspicuity loss in fine features such as vessels. As such, the challenge highlighted the need for better numerical image quality criteria. Magn Reson Med 79:1661-1673, 2018. © 2017 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

RESUMO

The ability of particles to flow with very low resistance is characteristic of superfluid and superconducting states, leading to their discovery in the past century. Although measuring the particle flow in liquid helium or superconducting materials is essential to identify superfluidity or superconductivity, no analogous measurement has been performed for superfluids based on ultracold Fermi gases. Here we report direct measurements of the conduction properties of strongly interacting fermions, observing the well-known drop in resistance that is associated with the onset of superfluidity. By varying the depth of the trapping potential in a narrow channel connecting two atomic reservoirs, we observed variations of the atomic current over several orders of magnitude. We related the intrinsic conduction properties to the thermodynamic functions in a model-independent way, by making use of high-resolution in situ imaging in combination with current measurements. Our results show that, as in solid-state systems, current and resistance measurements in quantum gases provide a sensitive probe with which to explore many-body physics. Our method is closely analogous to the operation of a solid-state field-effect transistor and could be applied as a probe for optical lattices and disordered systems, paving the way for modelling complex superconducting devices.

RESUMO

We study the emergence of a fragmented state in a strongly interacting Fermi gas subject to a tunable disorder. We investigate its properties using a combination of high-resolution in situ imaging and conductance measurements. The fragmented state exhibits saturated density modulations, a strongly reduced density percolation threshold, lower than the average density, and a resistance equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the same potential landscape. The transport measurements further indicate that this state is connected to the superfluid state as disorder is reduced. We propose that the fragmented state consists of unpercolated islands of bound pairs, whose binding energy is enhanced by the disorder.

RESUMO

Diffusion-weighted double-echo steady-state (dwDESS) MRI with bipolar diffusion gradients is a promising candidate to obtain diffusion weighted images (DWI) free of geometric distortions and with low motion sensitivity. However, a wider clinical application of dwDESS is currently hindered as no method is reported to explicitly calculate the effective b-value of the obtained DWI from the diffusion-gradients applied in the sequence. To this end, a previously described signal model was adapted for dwDESS with bipolar diffusion gradients, which allows to estimate an effective b-value, dubbed b'. Evaluation in phantom examinations was performed on a clinical 1.5 T MR system. Experimental results were compared with theoretical predictions, including the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) based on b-values from a standard EPI-DWI sequence and ADC' based on the effective b' from the dwDESS sequence. The adapted signal model was able to describe the experimental results, and the obtained values of ADC' were in line with conventional ADC measurements.

RESUMO

We investigate the properties of a strongly interacting superfluid gas of (6)Li(2) Feshbach molecules forming a thin film confined in a quasi-two-dimensional channel with a tunable random potential, creating a microscopic disorder. We measure the atomic current, extract the resistance of the film in a two-terminal configuration, and identify a superfluid state at low disorder strength, which evolves into a normal poorly conducting state for strong disorder. The transition takes place when the chemical potential reaches the percolation threshold of the disorder. The evolution of the conduction properties contrasts with the smooth behavior of the density and compressibility across the transition, measured in situ at equilibrium. These features suggest the emergence of a glasslike phase at strong disorder.

RESUMO

Introduction: To develop and test the feasibility of free-breathing (FB), high-resolution quantitative first-pass perfusion cardiac MR (FPP-CMR) using dual-echo Dixon (FOSTERS; Fat-water separation for mOtion-corrected Spatio-TEmporally accelerated myocardial peRfuSion). Materials and Methods: FOSTERS was performed in FB using a dual-saturation single-bolus acquisition with dual-echo Dixon and a dynamically variable Cartesian k-t undersampling (8-fold) approach, with low-rank and sparsity constrained reconstruction, to achieve high-resolution FPP-CMR images. FOSTERS also included automatic in-plane motion estimation and T 2 * correction to obtain quantitative myocardial blood flow (MBF) maps. High-resolution (1.6 x 1.6 mm2) FB FOSTERS was evaluated in eleven patients, during rest, against standard-resolution (2.6 x 2.6 mm2) 2-fold SENSE-accelerated breath-hold (BH) FPP-CMR. In addition, MBF was computed for FOSTERS and spatial wavelet-based compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction. Two cardiologists scored the image quality (IQ) of FOSTERS, CS, and standard BH FPP-CMR images using a 4-point scale (1-4, non-diagnostic - fully diagnostic). Results: FOSTERS produced high-quality images without dark-rim and with reduced motion-related artifacts, using an 8x accelerated FB acquisition. FOSTERS and standard BH FPP-CMR exhibited excellent IQ with an average score of 3.5 ± 0.6 and 3.4 ± 0.6 (no statistical difference, p > 0.05), respectively. CS images exhibited severe artifacts and high levels of noise, resulting in an average IQ score of 2.9 ± 0.5. MBF values obtained with FOSTERS presented a lower variance than those obtained with CS. Discussion: FOSTERS enabled high-resolution FB FPP-CMR with MBF quantification. Combining motion correction with a low-rank and sparsity-constrained reconstruction results in excellent image quality.

RESUMO

Local density fluctuations and density profiles of a Fermi gas are measured in situ and analyzed. In the quantum degenerate regime, the weakly interacting 6Li gas shows a suppression of the density fluctuations compared to the nondegenerate case, where atomic shot noise is observed. This manifestation of antibunching is a direct result of the Pauli principle and constitutes a local probe of quantum degeneracy. We analyze our data using the predictions of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and the local density approximation, demonstrating a fluctuation-based temperature measurement.

RESUMO

Neutron diffraction was used to study the behavior of water present in phospholipid multilamellar stacks from 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) at cryogenic temperatures. Evidence was found for the existence of a highly viscous phase of water that exists between 180 and 220 K based on the observation that water can leave the intermembrane space at these low temperatures. Similar measurements are described in the literature for purple membrane (PM) samples. From a comparison with results from this natural membrane by using the same flash-cooling protocol, it is found that in the case of pure lipid samples, less water is trapped and the water flows out at lower temperatures. This suggests that the water is less hindered in its movements than in the PM case. It is shown that at least the Lß'-phase of DMPC can be trapped likely by flash cooling; upon heating to about 260 K, it transforms to another phase that was not fully characterized.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate a technique for improving the performance of Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) in repetitive sampling schemes, in particular for 3D MRF acquisition, by shortening relaxation intervals between MRF pulse train repetitions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A calculation method for MRF dictionaries adapted to short relaxation intervals and non-relaxed initial spin states is presented, based on the concept of stationary fingerprints. The method is applicable to many different k-space sampling schemes in 2D and 3D. For accuracy analysis, T1 and T2 values of a phantom are determined by single-slice Cartesian MRF for different relaxation intervals and are compared with quantitative reference measurements. The relevance of slice profile effects is also investigated in this case. To further illustrate the capabilities of the method, an application to in-vivo spiral 3D MRF measurements is demonstrated. RESULTS: The proposed computation method enables accurate parameter estimation even for the shortest relaxation intervals, as investigated for different sampling patterns in 2D and 3D. In 2D Cartesian measurements, we achieved a scan acceleration of more than a factor of two, while maintaining acceptable accuracy: The largest T1 values of a sample set deviated from their reference values by 0.3% (longest relaxation interval) and 2.4% (shortest relaxation interval). The largest T2 values showed systematic deviations of up to 10% for all relaxation intervals, which is discussed. The influence of slice profile effects for multislice acquisition is shown to become increasingly relevant for short relaxation intervals. In 3D spiral measurements, a scan time reduction of 36% was achieved, maintaining the quality of in-vivo T1 and T2 maps. CONCLUSIONS: Reducing the relaxation interval between MRF sequence repetitions using stationary fingerprint dictionaries is a feasible method to improve the scan efficiency of MRF sequences. The method enables fast implementations of 3D spatially resolved MRF.

RESUMO

Thermoelectric effects, such as the generation of a particle current by a temperature gradient, have their origin in a reversible coupling between heat and particle flows. These effects are fundamental probes for materials and have applications to cooling and power generation. Here, we demonstrate thermoelectricity in a fermionic cold atoms channel in the ballistic and diffusive regimes, connected to two reservoirs. We show that the magnitude of the effect and the efficiency of energy conversion can be optimized by controlling the geometry or disorder strength. Our observations are in quantitative agreement with a theoretical model based on the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. Our device provides a controllable model system to explore mechanisms of energy conversion and realizes a cold atom-based heat engine.

RESUMO

In a mesoscopic conductor, electric resistance is detected even if the device is defect-free. We engineered and studied a cold-atom analog of a mesoscopic conductor. It consists of a narrow channel connecting two macroscopic reservoirs of fermions that can be switched from ballistic to diffusive. We induced a current through the channel and found ohmic conduction, even when the channel is ballistic. We measured in situ the density variations resulting from the presence of a current and observed that density remains uniform and constant inside the ballistic channel. In contrast, for the diffusive case with disorder, we observed a density gradient extending through the channel. Our approach opens the way toward quantum simulation of mesoscopic devices with quantum gases.
