RESUMO

Mobile robot navigation has been studied for a long time, and it is nowadays widely used in multiple applications. However, it is traditionally focused on two-dimensional geometric characteristics of the environments. There are situations in which robots need to share space with people, so additional aspects, such as social distancing, need to be considered. In this work, an approach for social navigation is presented. A multi-layer model of the environment containing geometric and topological characteristics is built based on the fusion of multiple sensor information. This is later used for navigating the environment considering social distancing from individuals and groups of people. The main novelty is combining fast marching square for path planning and navigation with Gaussian models to represent people. This combination allows to create a continuous representation of the environment from which smooth paths can be extracted and modified according to dynamically captured data. Results prove the practical application of the method on an assistive robot for navigating indoor scenarios, including a behavior for crossing narrow passages. People are efficiently detected and modeled to assure their comfort when robots are around.

The COVID-19 outbreak magnified territorial inequalities and increased vulnerability among low-income groups. Inhabitants in informal settlements are structurally disadvantaged in coping with communicative diseases such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite that, the pandemic has been accompanied by the proliferation of informal settlements. This study explores how the pandemic caused the squatting on new land with the case of "Los Hornos" in suburban Buenos Aires. We used a random forest algorithm and Google Earth Engine to estimate the rapid growth of a new informal settlement from a series of satellite images from early 2020. We also conducted semi-structured interviews with inhabitants to investigate the link between squatting and COVID-19. The study revealed that squatting on new land during the pandemic was mainly due to economic difficulties, overcrowding in existing informal settlements in the metropolitan center, and speculation in the informal housing market. This case is an example of how the most vulnerable groups bore the brunt of the pandemic, how the households in the existing informal settlement were behaving similar to those in the formal housing market (i.e., away from the urban centers), and how the outbreak had also been an opportunity for collective action of squatting a new land to materialize.

BACKGROUND: Mesoamerica is a remarkable region with a high geological and ecological complexity. Within northern Mesoamerica, the biotic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur (SMS) in southwestern Mexico harbors exceptionally high avian endemism and diversity. Herein, we searched for spatially and temporally concordant phylogeographic patterns, in four bird genera from three distinct avian orders co-distributed across Mesoamerica and investigated their causes through hypothesis testing regarding historical processes. Selected species include endemic and differentiated populations across the montane forests of Mesoamerica, and particularly within the SMS. RESULTS: We gathered mitochondrial DNA sequences for at least one locus from 177 individuals across all species. We assessed genetic structure, demographic history, and defined a framework for the coalescent simulations used in biogeographic hypothesis testing temporal and spatial co-variance. Our analyses suggested shared phylogeographic breaks in areas corresponding to the SMS populations, and between the main montane systems in Mesoamerica, with the Central Valley of Oaxaca and the Nicaragua Depression being the most frequently shared breaks among analyzed taxa. Nevertheless, dating analyses and divergence patterns observed were consistent with the hypothesis of broad vicariance across Mesoamerica derived from mechanisms operating at distinct times across taxa in the SMS. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides a framework for understanding the evolutionary origins and historical factors enhancing speciation in well-defined regions within Mesoamerica, indicating that the evolutionary history of extant biota inhabiting montane forests is complex and often idiosyncratic.

Bis(imidazolylidene)palladium complexes 9-12 containing a sterically hindered aryl group (mesityl or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and a poly(benzyl ether) dendron as N-substituents of the NHC ligand are accessible up to the third generation by transmetalation of the corresponding silver complexes. Complexes 9-12 are soluble, active, and very stable catalysts under Heck reaction conditions. The NHC ligand appears to be stably coordinated to the Pd during catalysis. The catalytic activity increases with generation number, although irregularly. The palladium site is not significantly congested in the reaction solvent by the increasing size of the dendritic substituents, as corroborated by X-ray diffraction, fluorescence and DOSY-NMR spectroscopy, and MD simulation studies. This is a consequence of the conformational semiflexibility of the poly(benzyl ether) dendrons and the benzylic link between these dendrons and the N-heterocyclic ligands.

Postcombustion CO2 capture by calcium looping using circulating fluidized bed technology, CFB-CaL, is evolving to tackle industrial sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. In addition to the known advantages of CFB-CaL (i.e., retrofittability and competitive energy efficiencies and cost), the fuel flexibility by using renewable biomass in the oxy-fired CFB calciner and the possibility to reach extremely high CO2 capture efficiencies in the carbonator are demonstrated in this paper. Results from the latest experimental campaigns in the TRL7 CFB-CaL pilot of the La Pereda are reported, treating over 2000 N m3/h of flue gases in the carbonator with a firing capacity of biomass pellets up to 2 MWth in the oxy-fired calciner. A new strategy to reach high CO2 capture efficiencies (above 99% in some cases) in the carbonator has been tested. This involves decoupling the carbonator in two temperature zones by cooling the solids-lean top region to below 550 °C and ensuring that a sufficient flow of active CaO reaches such a region.

RESUMO

One of the major problems of today's society is the rapid aging of its population. Life expectancy is increasing, but the quality of life is not. Faced with the growing number of people who require cognitive or physical assistance, new technological tools are emerging to help them. In this article, we present the ADAM robot, a new robot designed for domestic physical assistance. It mainly consists of a mobile base, two arms with grippers and vision systems. All this allows the performance of physical tasks that require navigation and manipulation of the environment. Among ADAM's features are its modularity, its adaptability to indoor environments and its versatility to function as an experimental platform and for service applications. In addition, it is designed to work respecting the user's personal space and is collaborative, so it can learn from experiences taught by them. We present the design of the robot as well as examples of use in domestic environments both alone and in collaboration with other domestic platforms, demonstrating its potential.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); its diagnosis and treatment are based on symptomatic improvement. However, as pharmacological therapy causes multiple adverse effects, the implementation of acupunctural techniques, such as electroacupuncture (EA) has been suggested as an alternative treatment. Nonetheless, there is a lack of scientific evidence, and its mechanisms are still unclear. We present the design and methodology of a new clinical randomized trial, that investigates the effectiveness of EA for the treatment of DPN. METHODS: This study is a four-armed, randomized, controlled, multicenter clinical trial (20-week intervention period, plus 12 weeks of follow-up after concluding intervention). A total of 48 T2DM patients with clinical signs and symptoms of DPN; and electrophysiological signs in the Nerve Conduction Study (NCS); will be treated by acupuncture specialists in outpatient units in Mexico City. Patients will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to one of the following four groups: (a) short fibre DPN with EA, (b) short fibre DPN with sham EA, (c) axonal DPN with EA and (d) axonal DPN with sham EA treatment. The intervention will consist of 32 sessions, 20 min each, per patient over two cycles of intervention of 8 weeks each and a mid-term rest period of 4 weeks. The primary outcome will be NCS parameters, and secondary outcomes will include DPN-related symptoms and pain by Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), Michigan Diabetic Neuropathy Score (MDNS), Dolour Neuropatique Score (DN-4), Semmes-Westein monofilament, Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain assessment, and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). To measure quality of life and improve oxidative stress, the inflammatory response; and genetic expression; will be analysed at the beginning and at the end of treatment. DISCUSSION: This study will be conducted to compare the efficacy of EA versus sham EA combined with conventional diabetic and neuropathic treatments if needed. EA may improve NCS, neuropathic pain and symptoms, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and genetic expression, and it could be considered a potential coadjutant treatment for the management of DPN with a possible remyelinating effect. RESUMO

We present a socio-legal analysis of the policy agenda known as genomic sovereignty in Mexico--in which the notion was first coined--and its translation into a national law of health aimed at regulating population genomics research in the country. Based in more than 2 years of participant observation we sustain that the notion of genomic sovereignty, aimed at protecting the "unique" genetic patterns of populations needs to be critically reassessed. The main problem with such notion is that there are no scientifically sound ways to delimit the genetic "uniqueness" of any population in the world. Arising from this dilemma it becomes increasingly clear that the patrimonial doctrines that have been used to regulate population genomics in Mexico are inoperative, and rather than creating a legal environment in which medical genomics can become a national public good, it has created a law that has been used to monopolise human genomic research in the country; making blood samples and data tool for dispute amongst scientific elites.

The production of eight phytohormones by Trichoderma species is described, as well as the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase (ACCD) activity, which diverts the ethylene biosynthetic pathway in plants. The use of the Trichoderma strains T. virens T49, T. longibrachiatum T68, T. spirale T75 and T. harzianum T115 served to demonstrate the diverse production of the phytohormones gibberellins (GA) GA1 and GA4, abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), auxin (indole-3-acetic acid: IAA) and the cytokinins (CK) dihydrozeatin (DHZ), isopenteniladenine (iP) and trans-zeatin (tZ) in this genus. Such production is dependent on strain and/or culture medium. These four strains showed different degrees of wheat root colonization. Fresh and dry weights, conductance, H2O2 content and antioxidant activities such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase were analyzed, under optimal irrigation and water stress conditions, on 30-days-old wheat plants treated with four-day-old Trichoderma cultures, obtained from potato dextrose broth (PDB) and PDB-tryptophan (Trp). The application of Trichoderma PDB cultures to wheat plants could be linked to the plants' ability to adapt the antioxidant machinery and to tolerate water stress. Plants treated with PDB cultures of T49 and T115 had the significantly highest weights under water stress. Compared to controls, treatments with strains T68 and T75, with constrained GA1 and GA4 production, resulted in smaller plants regardless of fungal growth medium and irrigation regime.

The search for endophytic fungi in the roots of healthy wheat plants from a non-irrigation field trial allowed us to select 4 out of a total of 54 cultivable isolates belonging to the genus Trichoderma, identified as T. harzianum T136 and T139, T. simmonsii T137, and T. afroharzianum T138. In vitro assays against the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum showed that the T. harzianum strains had the highest biocontrol potential and that T136 exhibited the highest cellulase and chitinase activities. Production patterns of eight phytohormones varied among the Trichoderma strains. All four, when applied alone or in combination, colonized roots of other wheat cultivars and promoted seed germination, tillering, and plant growth under optimal irrigation conditions in the greenhouse. Apart from T136, the endophytic Trichoderma strains showed plant protection capacity against drought as they activated the antioxidant enzyme machinery of the wheat plants. However, T. simmonsii T137 gave the best plant size and spike weight performance in water-stressed plants at the end of the crop. This trait correlated with significantly increased production of indole acetic acid and abscisic acid and increased 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase activity by T137. This study shows the potential of Trichoderma endophytes and that their success in agricultural systems requires careful selection of suitable strains.

The White-naped Brushfinch (Atlapetesalbinucha) comprises up to eight allopatric subspecies mainly identified by the color of the underparts (gray vs. yellow belly). Yellow and gray bellied forms were long considered two different species (A.albinucha and A.gutturalis), but they are presently considered as one polytypic species. Previous studies in the genus Atlapetes have shown that the phylogeny, based on molecular data, is not congruent with characters such as coloration, ecology, or distributional patterns. The phylogeography of A.albinucha was analyzed using two mitochondrial DNA regions from samples including 24 different localities throughout montane areas from eastern Mexico to Colombia. Phylogeographic analyses using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and haplotype network revealed incomplete geographic structure. The genetic diversity pattern is congruent with a recent process of expansion, which is also supported by Ecological Niche Models (ENM) constructed for the species and projected into three past scenarios. Overall, the results revealed an incomplete genetic divergence among populations of A.albinucha in spite of the species' ample range, which contrasts with previous results of phylogeographic patterns in other Neotropical montane forest bird species, suggesting idiosyncratic evolutionary histories for different taxa throughout the region.

The selectivity difference between 15 different stationary phases was measured using a large number of analytes at 2 or 3 different pH values (3, 7 and 10) with acetonitrile and methanol as the mobile phase modifiers. The packings discussed include standard C(8) and C(18) packings, packings with embedded polar groups, a phenyl packing, a pentafluoro-phenyl packing, an adamantylethyl packing and others. The major selectivity differences observed are discussed in detail. Specific effects such as pi-pi interactions on phenyl packings or hydrogen-bond interactions on phases with embedded polar groups are confirmed.

The nature of the interaction of positively charged analytes with the surface of reversed-phase bonded phases has been investigated as a function of both pH and volume fraction of organic modifier. Studies of the combined effect of both the parameters have been previously reported by us, and the data presented here further demonstrate a multiplicative interaction between pH and the concentration of organic modifier in the mobile phase. Fitting of the data as functions of pH and eluent composition clearly shows that the hydrophobically assisted ion-exchange process dominates over a purely reversed-phase or a pure ion-exchange retention mechanism. The underlying theory is developed in detail, and the mechanism is elucidated using several reversed-phase packings of substantially different character.

The chromatographic behaviour and performance of four polyproline-derived chiral stationary phases (CSPs) were tested using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). A series of structurally related racemic compounds, whose enantioseparation was proved to be sensitive to the type of mobile phase used in NP-HPLC, were chosen to be tested in the SFC conditions. Good enantioselection ability was shown by the CSPs for the analytes tested in the new conditions. Resolution, efficiency and analysis time, were considerably improved with respect to NP-HPLC when CO2/alcohol mobile phases were used. Monolithic columns clearly show enhanced chromatographic parameters and improved performance respect to their bead-based counterparts.

The residual silanol acidity and activity of several microparticulate and monolithic C18 columns has been measured from the retention of LiNO3 in the columns with a methanol/buffer (1 mM in Na+) (60:40 v/v) mobile phase buffered to different pH values. For Luna C18 (2) and LiChrospher RP-18 columns, at least two different types of silanols with different acidity for each packing, were observed. Purospher RP-18e and Chromolith RP-18e packings present evidence of some active silanols only at pH values close to their basic pH stability limit or higher. The results obtained have been compared with those obtained previously for Resolve C18, Resolve Silica, Symmetry C18, Symmetry Silica, XTerra MSC18 and Underivatized XTerra. A modification of an equation previously proposed has been applied to all columns studied and the results obtained have been used to classify the columns according to their silanol acidity and activity. The method allows the prediction of the extent of the silanol activity of the columns studied at a particular mobile phase pH.

The silanol acidity of Waters Resolve C18, Waters Resolve silica, Waters Symmetry C18, Waters Symmetry silica, Waters XTerra MS C18 and underivatized XTerra columns has been measured from the retention of LiNO3 with a methanol/water (60:40) mobile phase buffered to different pH values. The Li+ cation is retained by cationic exchange with the background cation of the mobile phase (Na+) through the ionized silanols. The number of active silanols increases in the order: XTerra MS C18 << Symmetry C18 < underivatized XTerra << Resolve C18 < Resolve silica approximately equal to Symmetry silica. XTerra MS C18 does not present any residual silanol acidity up to s(s)pH 10.0 (pH in 60% methanol) as measured by LiNO3. The underivatized XTerra packing and Symmetry C18 present active silanols only at s(s)pH values higher than 7.0. For the other three columns, two different types of silanols with different acidity (s(s)pKa values about 3.5-4.6 and 6.2-6.8, respectively) have been observed. Symmetry C18 shows evidence of the presence of active basic sites that retain NO3- by anionic exchange.

A usual method for the determination of aldehydes and ketones in different matrices consists of a derivatization with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) followed by HPLC-UV analysis. In the present work, a HPLC-UV gradient elution method has been applied to the analysis of 13 aldehydes and ketones-DNPH in automotive emission samples. In addition to these 13 compounds-DNPH, several carbonyl-DNPH compounds (linear, ramified and cyclic, saturated and unsaturated compounds) have been analyzed by HPLC-UV. Quantitative structure-retention relationships (QSRR) methods have been applied to predict the logarithm of capacity factor (logk') of carbonyl-DNPH compounds. According to its physicochemical meaning, combinations of 2 and 3 molecular descriptors have been proposed in order to achieve higher correlation with logk'. Using linear and non-linear QSRR methodologies, the resulting prediction models allowed the screening of the most probable carbonyl-DNPH derivative candidates that correspond to unknown compounds detected in automotive emission samples. This information has been useful for their identification by UPLC(®)-MS/MS. In addition, the chromatographic retention of different carbonyl-DNPH compound families was studied using two HPLC isocratic methods working with two orthogonal stationary phases (octadecylpolyethoxysilane and cyanopropyl). Differences between the retention indexes obtained for each column were used for classifying carbonyl-DNPH into compounds families.

Over the past years, LC-MS-based approaches have gained a growing interest in food analysis by using different platforms and methodologies. In particular, enhanced selectivity and sensitivity of multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scan function offer powerful capabilities in detecting and quantifying specific analytes within complex mixtures such as food matrices. The MRM approach, traditionally applied in biomedical research, is particularly suitable for the detection of food adulteration and for the verification of authenticity to assure food safety and quality, both recognized as top priorities by the European Union Commission. Increasingly stringent legislation ensure products safety along every step 'from farm to fork', especially for traditional foods designed with the Protected Designation of Origin certification. Therefore, there is a growing demand of new methodologies for defining food authenticity in order to preserve their unique traits against frauds. In this work, an ultra performance liquid chromatopgraphy-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) methodology based on MRM has been developed for the sensitive and selective detection of buffalo mozzarella adulteration. The targeted quantitative analysis was performed by monitoring specific transitions of the phosphorylated ß-casein f33-48 peptide, identified as a novel species-specific proteotypic marker. The high sensitivity of MRM-based MS and the wide dynamic range of triple quadrupole spectrometers have proved to be a valuable tool for the analysis of food matrices such as dairy products, thus offering new opportunities for monitoring food quality and adulterations.

A method for the determination of sterols in vegetable oils by ultraperformance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry detection has been developed. The separation of sterols was optimized in terms of mobile phase composition, column temperature and flow rate. The optimal conditions were achieved using an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column (50 x 2.1 mm, 1.7 microm) with a mobile phase consistent of acetonitrile/water (0.01% acetic acid) using a linear gradient, at a flow rate of 0.8 mL min(-1) and column temperature of 10 degrees C, giving a total analysis time below 5 min. The determination was performed in selective ion recording mode. The limits of detection were in all cases below 0.07 microg mL(-1), with relative standard deviation values of retention times and peak areas below 0.4 and 5%, respectively. The content of main sterols present in several vegetable oils with different botanical origins was also established.
