RESUMO

Networks of nanoscale objects are the subject of increasing interest as resistive switching systems for the fabrication of neuromorphic computing architectures. Nanostructured films of bare gold clusters produced in gas phase with thickness well beyond the electrical percolation threshold, show a non-ohmic electrical behavior and resistive switching, resulting in groups of current spikes with irregular temporal organization. Here we report the systematic characterization of the temporal correlations between single spikes and spiking rate power spectrum of nanostructured Au two-terminal devices consisting of a cluster-assembled film deposited between two planar electrodes. By varying the nanostructured film thickness we fabricated two different classes of devices with high and low initial resistance respectively. We show that the switching dynamics can be described by a power law distribution in low resistance devices whereas a bi-exponential behavior is observed in the high resistance ones. The measured resistance of cluster-assembled films shows a [Formula: see text] scaling behavior in the range of analyzed frequencies. Our results suggest the possibility of using cluster-assembled Au films as components for neuromorphic systems where a certain degree of stochasticity is required.

We report and solidly interpret the infrared spectrum of both pristine and oxidized carbynes embedded in a pure-carbon matrix. The spectra probe separately the effects of oxidation on sp- and on sp(2)-hybridized carbon, and provide information on the stability of the different structures in an oxidizing atmosphere. The final products are mostly short end-oxidized carbynes anchored with a double bond to sp(2) fragments, plus an oxidized sp(2) amorphous matrix. Our results have important implications for the realization of carbyne-based nano-electronics devices and highlight the active participation of carbynes in astrochemical reactions where they act as carbon source for the promotion of more complex organic species.

The dynamics of excited states in α,ω-dinaphthylpolyyne, a class of linear sp-carbon chains, has been investigated by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and DFT//TDDFT calculations. We show that the role of molecular conformers, in which end-capped naphthalene rings are planar or perpendicular to the polyyne plane, is fundamental for understanding both the steady state properties, such as UV-Vis absorption spectra and vibronic transitions, and the ultrafast transient absorption features. In particular, we observed in one of the conformers the ultrafast formation of a narrow photo-induced absorption band rising within 30 ps. This band can be assigned to an inter-system crossing event leading to the formation of triplet excited states.

Among several approaches to tackle the problem of energy consumption in modern computing systems, two solutions are currently investigated: one consists of artificial neural networks (ANNs) based on photonic technologies, the other is a different paradigm compared to ANNs and it is based on random networks of non-linear nanoscale junctions resulting from the assembling of nanoparticles or nanowires as substrates for neuromorphic computing. These networks show the presence of emergent complexity and collective phenomena in analogy with biological neural networks characterized by self-organization, redundancy, and non-linearity. Starting from this background, we propose and formalize a generalization of the perceptron model to describe a classification device based on a network of interacting units where the input weights are non-linearly dependent. We show that this model, called "receptron", provides substantial advantages compared to the perceptron as, for example, the solution of non-linearly separable Boolean functions with a single device. The receptron model is used as a starting point for the implementation of an all-optical device that exploits the non-linearity of optical speckle fields produced by a solid scatterer. By encoding these speckle fields we generated a large variety of target Boolean functions. We demonstrate that by properly setting the model parameters, different classes of functions with different multiplicity can be solved efficiently. The optical implementation of the receptron scheme opens the way for the fabrication of a completely new class of optical devices for neuromorphic data processing based on a very simple hardware.

Tissue mechanics determines tissue homeostasis, disease development and progression. Bladder strongly relies on its mechanical properties to perform its physiological function, but these are poorly unveiled under normal and pathological conditions. Here we characterize the mechanical fingerprints at the micro-scale level of the three tissue layers which compose the healthy bladder wall, and identify modifications associated with the onset and progression of pathological conditions (i.e., actinic cystitis and bladder cancer). We use two indentation-based instruments (an Atomic Force Microscope and a nanoindenter) and compare the micromechanical maps with a comprehensive histological analysis. We find that the healthy bladder wall is a mechanically inhomogeneous tissue, with a gradient of increasing stiffness from the urothelium to the lamina propria, which gradually decreases when reaching the muscle outer layer. Stiffening in fibrotic tissues correlate with increased deposition of dense extracellular matrix in the lamina propria. An increase in tissue compliance is observed before the onset and invasion of the tumor. By providing high resolution micromechanical investigation of each tissue layer of the bladder, we depict the intrinsic mechanical heterogeneity of the layers of a healthy bladder as compared with the mechanical properties alterations associated with either actinic cystitis or bladder tumor.

The fabrication of functional thin films and devices by direct deposition of nanoparticles from the gas phase is a promising approach enabling, for instance, the integration of complex analytical and sensing capabilities on microfabricated platforms. Aerosol-based techniques ensure large-scale nanoparticle production and they are potentially suited for this goal. However, they are not adequate in terms of fine control over the lateral resolution of the coatings, mild processing conditions (avoiding high temperature and aggressive chemicals), low contamination and compatibility with microfabrication processes. Here we report the high-rate and efficient production of functional nanostructured films by nanoparticle assembling obtained by the combination of flame spray pyrolysis and supersonic expansion. Our approach merges the advantages of flame spray pyrolysis for bulk nanopowders such as process stability and wide material library availability with those of supersonic cluster beam deposition in terms of lateral resolution and of direct integration of nanomaterials on devices. We efficiently produced nanostructured films and devices (such as gas sensors) using metal oxide, pure noble metal and oxide-supported noble metal nanoparticles.

Nanostructured cubic zirconia is a strategic material for biomedical applications since it combines superior structural and optical properties with a nanoscale morphology able to control cell adhesion and proliferation. We produced nanostructured cubic zirconia thin films at room temperature by supersonic cluster beam deposition of nanoparticles produced in the gas phase. Precise control of film roughness at the nanoscale is obtained by operating in a ballistic deposition regime. This allows one to study the influence of nanoroughness on cell adhesion, while keeping the surface chemistry constant. We evaluated cell adhesion on nanostructured zirconia with an osteoblast-like cell line using confocal laser scanning microscopy for detailed morphological and cytoskeleton studies. We demonstrated that the organization of cytoskeleton and focal adhesion formation can be controlled by varying the evolution of surface nanoroughness.

We investigate the structure of the [bmim][Tf(2)N]/silica interface by simulating the indentation of a thin (4 nm) [bmim][Tf(2)N] film by a hard nanometric tip. The ionic liquid/silica interface is represented in atomistic detail, while the tip is modelled by a spherical mesoscopic particle interacting via an effective short-range potential. Plots of the normal force (F(z)) on the tip as a function of its distance from the silica surface highlight the effect of weak layering in the ionic liquid structure, as well as the progressive loss of fluidity in approaching the silica surface. The simulation results for F(z) are in near-quantitative agreement with new AFM data measured on the same [bmim][Tf(2)N]/silica interface under comparable thermodynamic conditions.

Novel drug delivery systems such as nanoparticles (NPs) have been proved to enhance the effectiveness of many drugs. Clarithromycin is a broad spectrum macrolide antibiotic, used in many infectious conditions like upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and skin and other soft tissue infections. This paper describes the preparation and enhanced in vitro antibacterial activities of clarithromycin loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles. A modified quasi-emulsion solvent diffusion (MQESD) method was used to prepare clarithromycin (CLR) NPs. The antibacterial activity of the NPs was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method against Escherichia coli (PTCC 1330), Haemophilus influenzae (PTCC 1623), Salmonella typhi (PTCC 1609), Staphylococcus aureus (PTCC 1112) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (PTCC 1240). The inhibition zone diameters related to each nano formulation were compared with those for untreated CLR at the same concentrations. The results indicated that the mean inhibition zone diameters of NPs against all the bacteria tested were significantly higher than those of untreated CLR, particularly in the case of S. aureus. The increased potency of CLR NPs may be related to some physicochemical properties of NPs like modified surface characteristics, lower drug degradation, and increased drug adsorption and uptake.

Nanostructured Au films fabricated by the assembling of nanoparticles produced in the gas phase have shown properties suitable for neuromorphic computing applications: they are characterized by a non-linear and non-local electrical behavior, featuring switches of the electric resistance whose activation is typically triggered by an applied voltage over a certain threshold. These systems can be considered as complex networks of metallic nanojunctions where thermal effects at the nanoscale cause the continuous rearrangement of regions with low and high electrical resistance. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the electrical properties of this nano granular system, we developed a model based on a large three dimensional regular resistor network with non-linear conduction mechanisms and stochastic updates of conductances. Remarkably, by increasing enough the number of nodes in the network, the features experimentally observed in the electrical conduction properties of nanostructured gold films are qualitatively reproduced in the dynamical behavior of the system. In the activated non-linear conduction regime, our model reproduces also the growing trend, as a function of the subsystem size, of quantities like Mutual and Integrated Information, which have been extracted from the experimental resistance series data via an information theoretic analysis. This indicates that nanostructured Au films (and our model) possess a certain degree of activated interconnection among different areas which, in principle, could be exploited for neuromorphic computing applications.

Low-grade gliomas are slow-growing tumors invading eloquent areas and white matter pathways. For many decades these tumors were considered inoperable because of their high tropism for eloquent areas. However, the young age of the patients and the inescapable anaplastic transformation have recently suggested more aggressive treatments. We analyzed the neurological and neuro-oncological outcome of 12 patients who underwent surgery fully awake for the resection of LGG, harboring eloquent areas. 10 right- and 2 left-handed patients underwent pre-operative assessment: Karnofsky Performance Status, Edinburgh Handedness Inventory Score; neuropsychological and neurophysiological evaluations, according to the tumor location. During surgery we performed: sensory-motor-evoked potentials, continuous electro-corticography and bipolar/monopolar cortico-subcortical mapping during neuropsychological tests. The resection rate was calculated with neuro-imaging elaboration software. No permanent post-operative deficits were reported; 2 patients improved after surgery. No impairment of cognitive functions was reported. The KPS improved in 8 patients and was steady in the others. The mean resection rate was 78.3%. The resection allowed the control of pre-operative seizures without increasing the drug intake. Awake surgery allowed a good resection rate despite the eloquent location of the tumors, without post-operative deficit. The neuropsychological outcome was unchanged after surgery. The resection seems to improve seizure control. All the patients came back to normal life and work. In conclusion, awake surgery is reliable and feasible in removal of LGG, even if invading the main eloquent areas and networks. All the patients experienced a normal life after surgery, without permanent deficits.

We report the observation of non-metallic electrical conduction, resistive switching, and a negative temperature coefficient of resistance in nanostructured gold films above the electrical percolation and in strong-coupling regime, from room down to cryogenic temperatures (24 K). Nanostructured continuous gold films are assembled by supersonic cluster beam deposition of Au aggregates formed in the gas phase. The structure of the cluster-assembled films is characterized by an extremely high density of randomly oriented crystalline nanodomains, separated by grain boundaries and with a large number of lattice defects. Our data indicates that space charge limited conduction and Coulomb blockade are at the origin of the anomalous electrical behavior. The high density of extended defects and grain boundaries causes the localization of conduction electrons over the entire investigated temperature range.

Mechanosensing, the ability of cells to perceive and interpret the microenvironmental biophysical cues (such as the nanotopography), impacts strongly cellular behaviour through mechanotransductive processes and signalling. These events are predominantly mediated by integrins, the principal cellular adhesion receptors located at the cell/extracellular matrix (ECM) interface. Because of the typical piconewton force range and nanometre length scale of mechanotransductive interactions, achieving a detailed understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics occurring at the cell/microenvironment interface is challenging; sophisticated interdisciplinary methodologies are required. Moreover, an accurate control over the nanotopographical features of the microenvironment is essential, in order to systematically investigate and precisely assess the influence of the different nanotopographical motifs on the mechanotransductive process. In this framework, we were able to study and quantify the impact of microenvironmental nanotopography on early cellular adhesion events by means of adhesion force spectroscopy based on innovative colloidal probes mimicking the nanotopography of natural ECMs. These probes provided the opportunity to detect nanotopography-specific modulations of the molecular clutch force loading dynamics and integrin clustering at the level of single binding events, in the critical time window of nascent adhesion formation. Following this approach, we found that the nanotopographical features are responsible for an excessive force loading in single adhesion sites after 20-60 s of interaction, causing a drop in the number of adhesion sites. However, by manganese treatment we demonstrated that the availability of activated integrins is a critical regulatory factor for these nanotopography-dependent dynamics.

Networks based on nanoscale resistive switching junctions are considered promising for the fabrication of neuromorphic computing architectures. To date random networks of nanowires, nanoparticles, and metal clusters embedded in a polymeric matrix or passivated by shell of ligands or oxide layers have been used to produce resistive switching systems. The strategies applied to tailor resistive switching behavior are currently based on the careful control of the volume fraction of the nanoscale conducting phase that must be fixed close to the electrical percolation threshold. Here, by blending laboratory and computer experiments, we demonstrate that metallic nanostructured Au films fabricated by bare gold nanoparticles produced in the gas phase and with thickness well beyond the electrical percolation threshold, show a non-ohmic electrical behavior and complex and reproducible resistive switching. We observe that the nanogranular structure of the Au films does not evolve with thickness: this introduces a huge number of defects and junctions affecting the electrical transport and causing a dynamic evolution of the nanoscale electrical contacts under the current flow. To uncover the origin of the resistive switching behavior in Au cluster-assembled films, we developed a simple computational model for determining the evolution of a model granular film under bias conditions. The model exploits the information provided by experimental investigation about the nanoscale granular morphology of real films. Our results show that metallic nanogranular materials have functional properties radically different from their bulk counterparts, in particular nanostructured Au films can be fabricated by assembling bare gold clusters which retain their individuality to produce an all-metal resistive switching system.

PURPOSE: Pathologic myopia (PM) is frequently complicated by choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Diagnosis is mainly clinical and angiographic but in recent years optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been noted to add important information. The authors report on the successfully OCT-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT) of an angiographic occult CNV complicating PM. METHODS: Observational case report. Fluorescein angiography with a confocal SLO (HRA, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) and OCT Stratus (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.) imaging were used for diagnosis and monitoring of the CNV. Standard PDT was performed. RESULTS: A highly myopic 17-year-old girl complained of a drop in visual acuity (VA) in left eye (LE), dating back a few weeks. Her best-corrected (BC) VA was 20/40 in the LE, with some metamorphopsia. No hemorrhage or evident signs of CNV were visible either at fundus or at dynamic fluorescein angiography. OCT scans indicated a slight elevation of the RPE-choriocapillary complex with rarefaction of neuroretinal tissue that has been interpreted as CNV. PDT was then performed. LE BCVA had improved to 20/25, metamorphopsias disappeared, and at OCT examination no retinal morphologic modification was evident. Nine months later, BCVA and ophthalmoscopy are still stable. CONCLUSIONS: In this case, OCT was the fundamental tool for the correct diagnosis and posttherapymonitoring of CNV-complicated PM. The CNV, not clearly detectable using angiographic imaging, was treated with PDT, and results in terms of VA and anatomic resolution were good.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) manifest changes in the excitability of the soleus H-reflex. METHODS: H-reflex stimulus-response curve was studied in 14 CLBP patients and 14 age-matched healthy subjects. H-threshold, H-maximum size, H-steepness and H-latency were determined for both legs. Homosynaptic depression (HD), following a train of H-reflexes, and presynaptic inhibition (PI) from flexor afferents onto soleus Ia afferents were also evaluated. RESULTS: H-threshold was significantly increased, H-size as a function of stimulus intensity was significantly different, and H-recruitment curve steepness was significantly lower in CLBP patients compared to healthy subjects. No significant difference in the amount of HD and PI of the H-reflex was found between the two groups. H-latency and Hmax/Mmax ratio was comparable between the subjects groups. CONCLUSIONS: In CLBP there is a reduced excitability of group Ia afferent fibres from the soleus muscle to which presynaptic factors do not seem to contribute and that presumably depend on changes in the peripheral sensory input. SIGNIFICANCE: Changes in H-reflex excitability may underlie a decrease in the gain of a peripheral sensor in CLBP. Estimation of soleus H-threshold and H-recruitment curve may contribute to the diagnostic evaluation of CLBP and may be used to monitor the efficacy of treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse recruitment properties of ulnar nerve motor axons in 60 CTS patients with negative ulnar nerve electrodiagnostic tests. METHODS: Recruitment properties of the ulnar nerve were studied by analysing the relationship between the intensity of electrical stimulation and the size of motor response, i.e. the stimulus-response curve. Parameters of the curve (threshold, slope and plateau) were compared with those of the corresponding curve of the median nerve and both with parameters of 30 control curves. RESULTS: The ulnar nerve stimulus-response curve was strikingly abnormal and, except for severity, closely resembled that of the median nerve. The slope of the curve was significantly less than that of controls and decreased with increasing abnormalities of the median nerve. This suggested that the pathological process involving the ulnar nerve was contingent with the severity of median nerve involvement. CONCLUSIONS: We propose that the ulnar nerve may be subject to compression in Guyon's canal as a consequence of high pressure in the carpal tunnel of CTS patients. SIGNIFICANCE: Ectopic activity from ulnar axons may contribute to clinical spread of symptoms outside the median nerve territory in CTS. This does not exclude possible involvement of central plasticity mechanisms in producing extra-median symptoms in CTS patients.

The purpose of this article is to describe a case of bilateral neovascularization complicating Best Disease. A 12-year-old patient with bilateral neovascularization was managed with observation in the right eye and surgical removal in the other eye. Visual acuity, biomicroscopy and fluorangiography were carried out from 1997 to 2005. The right eye did not experience any change in visual acuity from baseline (20/50) while left eye varied from 20/200 to 20/32. Macular exudative-hemorrhagic manifestations resolved bilaterally. Eight years later, VA and retinal findings were unchanged. In this case, although VA was reasonably good in both eyes, it is difficult to assess the prognosis of surgically excised neovascularization vs natural history, also considering that nowadays photodynamic therapy and antiangiogenetic drugs are considered the therapy of choice in subfoveal neovascularization.

RESUMO

Supersonic cluster beam deposition is a powerful technique for the production of nanostructured thin films and the microfabrication with stencil masks of patterns with very good lateral resolution. The high focusing of cluster beam typical of supersonic expansions causes the deposition of films with strong thickness variation over a small area. To overcome this problem we have designed and tested a rotating screen allowing a continuously graded exposure of the substrate during cluster beam deposition. This allows the production of nanostructured films with uniform thickness over a large area while keeping all the features typical of supersonic beams.

The shape and size of nanoparticles are important parameters affecting their biodistribution, bioactivity, and toxicity. The high-throughput characterisation of the nanoparticle shape in dispersion is a fundamental prerequisite for realistic in vitro and in vivo evaluation, however, with routinely available bench-top optical characterisation techniques, it remains a challenging task. Herein, we demonstrate the efficacy of a single particle extinction and scattering (SPES) technique for the in situ detection of the shape of nanoparticles in dispersion, applied to a small library of anisotropic gold particles, with a potential development for in-line detection. The use of SPES paves the way to the routine quantitative analysis of nanoparticles dispersed in biologically relevant fluids, which is of importance for the nanosafety assessment and any in vitro and in vivo administration of nanomaterials.
