RESUMO

While modern family-related ideas and behaviors have become more widely accepted in contemporary China, Chinese Muslim minorities continue to hold on to traditional religious practices. Surprisingly, data from our survey conducted in Gansu province in China's northwestern borderlands reveal that Muslims of the Hui and Dongxiang ethnicities reported much higher rates of cohabitation experience than the secular majority Han. Based on follow-up qualitative interviews, we found the answer to lie in the interplay between the highly interventionist Chinese state and the robust cultural resilience of local Islamic communities. While the state maintains a high minimum legal age of marriage, the early marriage norm remains strong in Chinese Muslim communities, where religion constitutes an alternative and often more powerful source of legitimacy-at least in the private sphere of life. Using the 2000 census data, we further show that women in almost all 10 Muslim ethnic groups have higher percentages of underage births and premarital births than Han women, both nationally and in the northwest where most Chinese Muslims live. As the once-outlawed behavior of cohabitation became more socially acceptable during the reform and opening-up era, young Muslim Chinese often found themselves in "arranged cohabitations" as de facto marriages formed at younger-than-legal ages. In doing so, Chinese Muslim communities have reinvented the meaning of cohabitation. Rather than liberal intimate relationship based on individual autonomy, cohabitation has served as a coping strategy by which Islamic patriarchs circumvent the Chinese state's aggressive regulations aimed at "modernizing" the Muslim family.

RESUMO

The decline in fertility is a pressing issue for most advanced economies. Previous studies on fertility have not paid enough attention to politics. This study investigates the role of political efficacy on people's fertility intentions in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore - three advanced economies with different political regimes. We also uncover how such a relationship varies depending on people's political attitudes. This study gathered data from three online surveys with a factorial experiment design in Hong Kong (N = 1895), Taiwan (N = 1971), and Singapore (N = 1985). The results of random-intercept regression analyses show that the impact of political efficacy varies depending on the context. The results indicate that political efficacy positively impacts fertility intentions in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where there are active political movements, especially among those who support democratic values. In Singapore, where there is a lack of active political movements, political efficacy has a lesser impact on fertility intentions. In modern societies with advanced economies and influential political voices from civil society, promoting citizens' involvement in policymaking may be a beneficial strategy to increase fertility rates.

RESUMO

Drawing on Lareau's binary conceptualization of parenting as concerted cultivation and accomplishment of natural growth, we examine how parental background determines the degree to which the two parenting practices are realized in China. To do so, we examine how parental education shapes children's weekly time use patterns on planned activities (academic and nonacademic) and unplanned activities. Using multi-level mixed-effects linear models based on the 2014 China Education Panel Survey, we find that parental education is positively associated with concerted cultivation, with children spending more hours on both planned academic and nonacademic activities, and negatively associated with accomplishment of natural growth, with children spending more hours on unplanned activities. The link between parental education and children's time use patterns is partly explained by parents' educational expectations for their children, parental supervision, parental support, and economic investments on education.

RESUMO

Ethnic identity is a highly contested issue in China. Yet, the literature on the social construction of ethnoracial identity is dominated by research on the Americas. In this study, we investigate patterns of ethnic identification among children of interethnic parents in China using census data from 2000 and survey data from 2010-2018. We focus on children who are aged 20 or younger and have one parent identified as an ethnic minority and one parent identified as an ethnic Han. We find that the strongest predictor of a child's minority identification is the father's ethnicity. Minority identification is also associated with gender, birth year, mother's education, household income, migration status, parent's perception of the child's diligence, the geographic concentration of minorities, and eligibility for ethnicity-based bonus points on the college entrance examination. Taken together, the results suggest that children's ethnoracial identity is shaped by family demographic characteristics as well as by education policy.

RESUMO

This study investigates the effect of coresidence with the husband's or the wife's parents on division of household labor between the couple in China. We further examine how life course, education, hukou, and the gender composition of coresiding parents moderate the relationship between intergenerational coresidence and division of household labor. Previous research on housework division has looked at nuclear families. Little is known about the effect of intergenerational coresidence on housework division. Despite rapid modernization, intergenerational coresidence remains prevalent in China as families try to adapt to the changing social and economic conditions. While patrilocal coresidence dominates in both rural and urban China, matrilocal coresidence is increasingly common in urban China. Based on panel data from the 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018 waves of the China Family Panel Studies, fixed effects models are used to account for both observed and unobserved individual-specific confounders. Both patrilocal and matrilocal coresidence seem to widen the within-couple gender gap in housework time among urban hukou holders. Among rural hukou holders, though patrilocal coresidence is associated with reduced housework time for the wife and the couple as a whole, neither patrilocal nor matrilocal coresidence significantly influences how much time the husband spent on housework. Coresidence with the husband's or the wife's parents may exacerbate gender inequality in housework division.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many previous empirical findings on 'motherhood penalty' and 'fatherhood premium' remain inconclusive due to potential selection biases. China's regional variation in exemptions to the one-child policy enables us to use the gender of the first child as a powerful instrumental variable (IV) in identifying the gendered fertility effects. OBJECTIVE: We aim to estimate the causal effects of fertility on fathers' and mothers' various outcomes in China. METHODS: Using the IV approach, this paper examines the gender-specific fertility effects on parents' time use, income, and subjective well-being, using data for 2010 from the China Family Panel Studies. RESULTS: Results show that while fathers spend more time at work and less time taking care of family members with more children, mothers report better subjective well-being. Moreover, fathers gain self-confidence in both their careers and the future, and mothers are happier, more satisfied with life and report better social ability. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not directly support the gendered fertility effects on parents. However, the differential fertility effects on specific domains for mothers versus fathers are consistent with household specialisation. By interpreting this conclusion within the context of China's one-child family planning policy, our research suggests that parents would do better if the one-child policy were abolished - i.e., if parents were allowed to have more children.

RESUMO

This paper reports on a study of trends in marital age homogamy in China from 1960 to 2005 that uses data from the China 2005 1% Population Inter-census Survey. Instead of a consistent increase in age homogamy, results show an inverted U-shaped trend. One plausible explanation is that intensified economic pressure, rising consumerism, and a shrinking gender gap in education during the post-1990s reform era have acted to increase women's desire to marry men who are more economically established, and thus usually older, than less financially secure men. We argue that age hypergamy maintains status hypergamy, a deeply rooted norm for couples in China. An auxiliary analysis based on the human capital model for earnings supports this interpretation. A continued trend in age hypergamy implies a future "marriage squeeze" for men of low socioeconomic status.

RESUMO

Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has revolutionized the proteomics analysis of complexes, cells, and tissues. In a typical proteomic analysis, the tandem mass spectra from a LC-MS/MS experiment are assigned to a peptide by a search engine that compares the experimental MS/MS peptide data to theoretical peptide sequences in a protein database. The peptide spectra matches are then used to infer a list of identified proteins in the original sample. However, the search engines often fail to distinguish between correct and incorrect peptides assignments. In this study, we designed and implemented a novel algorithm called De-Noise to reduce the number of incorrect peptide matches and maximize the number of correct peptides at a fixed false discovery rate using a minimal number of scoring outputs from the SEQUEST search engine. The novel algorithm uses a three-step process: data cleaning, data refining through a SVM-based decision function, and a final data refining step based on proteolytic peptide patterns. Using proteomics data generated on different types of mass spectrometers, we optimized the De-Noise algorithm on the basis of the resolution and mass accuracy of the mass spectrometer employed in the LC-MS/MS experiment. Our results demonstrate De-Noise improves peptide identification compared to other methods used to process the peptide sequence matches assigned by SEQUEST. Because De-Noise uses a limited number of scoring attributes, it can be easily implemented with other search engines.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the clinical and imaging characteristics of stage Ⅰ occupational cement pneumoconiosis patients. Methods: In October 2021, the data of patients with occupational cement pneumoconiosis diagnosed by the Third Hospital of Peking University from 2014 to 2020 were collected, and the data of the patients' initial exposure age, dust exposure duration, diagnosis age, incubation period, chest X-ray findings, lung function and other data were analyzed retrospectively. Spearman grade correlation was used for correlation analysis of grade count data. The influencing factors of lung function were analyzed by binary logistic regression. Results: A total of 107 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 80 male patients and 27 female patients. The inital exposure age was (26.2±7.7) years, the diagnosis age was (59.4±7.9) years, the dust exposure duration was (17.9±8.0) years, and the incubation period was (33.1±10.3) years. The initial dust exposure age and the dust exposure duration in female patients were less than those in men, and the incubation period was longer than that in men (P<0.05). The imaging analysis showed the small opacities as"pp"accounted for 54.2%. 82 patients (76.6%) had small opacities distributed in two lung areas. The lung areas distribution of small opacities in female patients was less than that in male patients (2.04±0.19 vs 2.41±0.69, P<0.001). There were 57 cases of normal pulmonary function, 41 cases of mild abnormality and 9 cases of moderate abnormality. The number of lung regions with small opacities on X-ray was the risk factor for abnormal lung function in cement pneumoconiosis patients (OR=2.491, 95%CI=1.197-5.183, P=0.015) . Conclusion: The patients with occupational cement pneumoconiosis had long dust exposure duration and incubation period, light imaging changes and pulmonary function damage. The abnormal lung function was related to the range of pulmonary involvement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES@#To investigate the current status of unplanned readmission of neonates within 31 days after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and risk factors for readmission.@*METHODS@#A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 1 561 infants discharged from the NICU, among whom 52 infants who were readmitted within 31 days were enrolled as the case group, and 104 infants who were not readmitted after discharge during the same period of time were enrolled as the control group. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the risk factors for readmission.@*RESULTS@#Among the 1 561 infants, a total of 63 readmissions occurred in 52 infants, with a readmission rate of 3.33%. hyperbilirubinemia and pneumonia were the main causes for readmission, accounting for 29% (18/63) and 24% (15/63) respectively. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that that gestational age <28 weeks, birth weight <1 500 g, multiple pregnancy, mechanical ventilation, and length of hospital stay <7 days were risk factors for readmission (OR=5.645, 5.750, 3.044, 3.331, and 1.718 respectively, P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Neonates have a relatively high risk of readmission after discharge from the NICU. The medical staff should pay attention to risk factors for readmission and formulate targeted intervention measures, so as to reduce readmission and improve the quality of medical service.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is pathologically characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the accumulation of aggregated α-synuclein in specific central nervous system (CNS) regions. Disease development is attributed to α-synuclein abnormalities, particularly aggregation and phosphorylation. The ginsenoside Rg1, an active component of ginseng, possesses neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate these activities of Rg1 in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)/probenecid (MPTP/p)-induced PD mouse model for the first time and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Oral treatment with Rg1 significantly attenuated the high MPTP-induced mortality, behavior defects, loss of dopamine neurons and abnormal ultrastructure changes in the SNpc. Other assays indicated that the protective effect of Rg1 may be mediated by its anti-neuroinflammatory properties. Rg1 regulated MPTP-induced reactive astrocytes and microglia and decreased the release of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in the SNpc. Rg1 also alleviated the unusual MPTP-induced increase in oligomeric, phosphorylated and disease-related α-synuclein in the SNpc. In conclusion, Rg1 protects dopaminergic neurons, most likely by reducing aberrant α-synuclein-mediated neuroinflammation, and holds promise for PD therapeutics.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the induction and activation of heparinase by extracellular histones in acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) induced by chlorine in mice.METHODS: The specific pathogen free adult male C57 BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control group, chlorine injured group, histone injured group, anti-histone antibody group and heparinase inhibitor group, with six mice in each group. The mice in the control group and histone injured group were exposed to clean air, and the mice in the other three groups were exposed to chlorine gas at a dose of 580.0 mg/m~3 for 30 minutes by systemic dynamic inhalation.Mice in the histone injured group were injected with 50 mg/kg body weight calf thymus histone by tail vein. One hour before exposure, mice in the anti-histone antibody group were pretreated with 20 mg/kg body weight anti-histone H4 antibody by tail vein injection, and mice in the heparinase inhibitor group were injected with 2 mg/kg body weight OGT2115(heparinase inhibitor). The other three groups were given equal volume of 0.9% sodium chloride solution by tail vein injection. After 24 hours of exposure, arterial blood was collected for blood gas analysis and the lung tissue was collected for histopathological examination. The protein level of heparinase in lung tissue were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the activity of heparinase were detected by measuring the product of heparan degradation. The protein expression of pro-heparinase and active heparinase were detected by Western blotting.RESULTS: The dyspnea developed of mice in the chlorine injured group and histone injured group, diffuse inflammation occurred in lung tissue, the oxygenation index in arterial blood decreased(all P<0.05), and the protein level and activity of heparinase in lung tissue, as well as the relative expression of pro-heparinase and active heparinase were increased compared with the control group(all P<0.05). The dyspnea, hypoxemia and acute lung injury of mice in the anti-histone antibody group were alleviated, and the protein level of heparinase in lung tissue, as well as the relative expression levels of pro-heparinase and active heparinase were decreased(all P<0.05), compared with chlorine injury group and histone injury group. The dyspnea, hypoxemia and acute lung injury were alleviated in the heparinase inhibitor group, and the activity of heparinase and the relative expression of pro-heparinase in the lung tissue were decreased compared with the chlorine injury group(all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: During the occurrence and development of chlorine-induced ARDS in mice, extracellular histones aggravate lung injury by inducing the expression and activation of heparinase. Acute lung injury can be alleviated by inhibiting the expression and activation of heparinase.

RESUMO

Mutations, duplication and triplication of α-synuclein genes are linked to familial Parkinson's disease (PD), and aggregation of α-synuclein (α-syn) in Lewy bodies (LB) is involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. The targeted overexpression of α-syn in the substantia nigra (SN) mediated by viral vectors may provide a better alternative to recapitulate the neurodegenerative features of PD. Therefore, we overexpressed human wild-type α-syn using rAAV2/1 vectors in the bilateral SN of mouse and examined the effects for up to 12 weeks. Delivery of rAAV-2/1-α-syn caused significant nigrostriatal degeneration including appearance of dystrophic striatal neurites, loss of nigral dopaminergic (DA) neurons and dissolving nigral neuron bodies in a time-dependent manner. In addition, the α-syn overexpressed mice also developed significant deficits in motor function at 12 weeks when the loss of DA neurons exceeded a threshold of 50%. To investigate the sensitivity to neurotoxins in mice overexpressing α-syn, we performed an MPTP treatment with the subacute regimen 8 weeks after rAAV injection. The impact of the combined genetic and environmental insults on DA neuronal loss, striatal dopamine depletion, dopamine turnover and motor dysfunction was markedly greater than that of either alone. Moreover, we observed increased phosphorylation (S129), accumulation and nuclear distribution of α-syn after the combined insults. In summary, these results reveal that the overexpressed α-syn induces progressive nigrostriatal degeneration and increases the susceptibility of DA neurons to MPTP. Therefore, the targeted overexpression of α-syn and the combination with environmental toxins may provide valuable models for understanding PD pathogenesis and developing related therapies.

RESUMO

Environmental toxin exposure is associated with the development of Parkinson's disease (PD), and environmental factors can influence the onset of the majority of sporadic PD cases via genetically mediated pathways. Rotenone, a widespread pesticide, induces Parkinsonism and the formation of Lewy bodies in animals; however, the molecular mechanism that underlies α-synuclein aggregation remains unclear. Here, we assessed the aggregation of α-synuclein in PC12 cells with or without cross-linking following rotenone exposure via a variety of methods, including western blotting, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. We demonstrated that rotenone increased the intracellular calcium levels and induced the aggregation and phosphorylation of α-synuclein in a calcium-dependent manner. Aggregated α-synuclein is typically degraded by autophagy, and rotenone impaired this process. The attenuation of autophagy and α-synuclein alterations were reversed by scavenging calcium. Calcium regulates the activity of AKT-glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3)ß. We demonstrated that rotenone attenuated the phosphorylation of AKT and GSK3ß, and the elimination of calcium reversed these phenomena. As a GSK3ß inhibitor, lithium promoted autophagy and decreased the aggregation and phosphorylation of α-synuclein. GSK3ß activation through overexpression depressed autophagy and increased the total protein level and phosphorylation of α-synuclein. These results suggest that rotenone-induced α-synuclein aggregation is mediated by the calcium/GSK3ß signaling pathway.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of close reduction combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis for distal fracture of tibial shaft. METHODS: From March 2009 to May 2013, there were 124 patients (89 males and 35 females, 30 of them were injured in a traffic accident and 94 were falling down in daily life, the ages ranging from 21 to 81 years old) who suffered from distal fracture of tibial shaft. Sixty-six patients (48 males and 18 females, 45 cases of type A, 12 cases of type B and 9 cases of type C) were treated with close manipulative reduction combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate fixation. After close reduction, a minimal incision was made and a anatomic plate was inserted just along the medial tibia periostea, and then the fracture was fixed without fracture exposure. The other 58 patients (41 males and 17 females, 41 cases of type A, 10 cases of type B and 7 cases of type C) were treated with conventional open reduction and internal fixation. Length of the incision, operating time, early postoperative pain (recorded using the Visual Analog Scale score) and the outcome results (recorded using the evaluation standard of Johner-Wruhs) were compared. RESULTS: The length of incision was meanly (7.34 ± 1.42) cm in MIPPO group and (21.82 ± 2.35) cm in ORIF group; operation time was (44.48 ± 10.00) min in MIPPO group and (59.42 ± 11.84) min in ORIF group. The postoperative radiographs verified good position of all screws and satisfactory bone fracture reduction in both groups. All the patients were followed up, and the duration ranged from 10 to 24 months (mean 15.2 months) in both groups. In MIPPO group, only one patient had delayed union and got union after Chinese herb therapy. The other 65 patients got bony union during 15 to 20 weeks. While in ORIF group, 3 patients suffered from nonunion and received reoperation with bone grafting, and 4 patients got bone infection. CONCLUSION: Treatment of distal fracture of tibial shaft, combined with close reduction and MIPPO technique, has the advantages such as less invasion, less damage of blood supply, simplified procedure of operation and higher union rate, which is an ideal methods and is accordant to the biological demand.

RESUMO

Objective To determine the effect of local mild hypothermia on patients with acute cerebral infarction and ascertain its optimal therapeutic window. Methods According to the time receiving treatment, 114 patients with acute cerebral infarction were divided into group A (≤6 h), group B (6-24 h) and group C (≥ 24 h). Then, each group was subdivided into 2 groups at random: treatment group (A1, B1, C1) and control group (A2, B2, C2). Patients in the control group were subjected to such conventional therapy as anti-platelet aggregation. Patients in the treatment group were treated with local mild hypothermia (33-35 ℃ body-core temperature) for 48 h besides conventional therapy. Clinical outcomes were assessed by the National institutes of health stroke scale (NIHSS) on admission and 7, 14,30 d after treatment. Furthermore, we detected the serum level of nitrogen monoxidum (NO) and superoxide dismutasc (SOD) on admission, and 7 and 14 d after treatment. Results Compared with the control group, treatment group enjoyed significantly decreased scores of NIHSS 7, 14 and 30 d after treatment and significantly decreased level of NO 7 and 14 d after treatment (P<0.05), but obviously increased SOD vitality 7 and 14 d after treatment (P<0.05). No significant differences in terms of NIHSS scores, level of NO and SOD vitality were noted between group C1 and group C2 at each time point (P>0.05). Group Al and group B1 had obviously lower scores of NIHSS than group C1 on the 7th, 14th and 30th d of treatment, and had significantly lower level of NO and obviously increased SOD vitality as compared with group C1 on the 7th and 14th d of treatment (P< 0.05), and group A1 enjoyed its advantage. Conclusion Early local mild hypothermia therapy can improve neurological function in patients with acute cerebral infarction. The mild hypothermia induced within 6 h may be optimal therapeutic window;mild hypothermia induced at 6-24 h is less effective and that above 24 h is non-effective.
