RESUMO
Phototoxicity of pazufloxacin mesilate (PZFX mesilate), a novel parenteral quinolone antimicrobial agent, were evaluated in vitro and in vivo studies. In vitro, phototoxicity for cultured cells of PZFX, which is active principle of PZFX mesilate, was studied, and stability for long-wavelength ultraviolet (UVA) was examined. In vivo, phototoxicity tests in guinea pigs and rats, and photoallergenicity tests in guinea pigs were conducted. In the phototoxicity test on cultured cells, CHL/IU cells were irradiated UVA of 300-3000 mJ/cm2 in the presence of PZFX, ofloxacin (OFLX), lomefloxacin (LFLX) or sparfloxacin (SPFX) at 10 micrograms/mL. Phototoxic potencies for cultured cells of the quinolones tested were SPFX > LFLX > OFLX > PZFX. In addition, changes in ultraviolet absorption spectrum and residual rate of PZFX, OFLX, LFLX and SPFX were examined after UVA irradiation of 300-3000 mJ/cm2 to each solution. PZFX was stable for UVA compared with OFLX and LFLX. In the phototoxicity test of guinea pigs, each quinolone was administered intraperitoneally daily for 7 days, and UVA of about 11 J/cm2 was irradiated at 30 minutes after the last administration. Dose levels of each quinolone were 65 and 130 mg/kg of PZFX mesilate (dose levels converted to PZFX: 50 and 100 mg/kg), 50 and 100 mg/kg of nalidixic acid (NA), 100 mg/kg of OFLX, enoxacin (ENX), ciprofloxacin (CPFX), LFLX and SPFX. Grade of skin reaction (erythema) at 24 hours after UVA irradiation decreased in the order: SPFX > CPFX > NA > ENX = OFLX > LFLX > PZFX mesilate. Thus, PZFX mesilate was found to have the weakest phototoxicity. In the maximum plasma concentration of quinolones from 0.5 to 2.5 hours after administration, corresponding to the time of UVA irradiation, the concentration of the group administered PZFX mesilate was about 4.1 times higher than that of CPFX group, and about 1.3 times higher than that of SPFX group. The area under the blood concentration-time curve (AUC0.5-2.5) of the group administered PZFX mesilate was the same as that of SPFX group, and about 3.2 times larger than that of CPFX group. These data showed that phototoxicity of PZFX mesilate was also weaker than that of CPFX or SPFX in consideration of AUC0.5-2.5. In the phototoxicity test of rats injected intravenously, no phototoxicity was observed at 130 mg/kg of PZFX mesilate. In the photoallergenicity test of guinea pigs, no photoallergenicity was observed by PZFX mesilate. As mentioned above, from in vitro studies PZFX was found to be stable for UVA irradiation compared with OFLX and LFLX, and phototoxicity for cultured cells of PZFX was weaker than that of SPFX, LFLX or OFLX. In addition, from in vivo studies phototoxicity of PZFX mesilate was found to be weaker than that of NA, OFLX, ENX, CPFX, LFLX or SPFX, and no photoallergenicity was observed. Therefore, photosensitive potency of PZFX mesilate might be less than that of other quinolones.

Using in situ hybridization with35S-labeled prepro-VIP cDNA probes, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) mRNA was detected in tumor tissues from two cases of ganglioneuroblastoma associated with watery diarrhea syndrome. The distribution of VIP mRNA was confined to the cytoplasm of the cells showing ganglionic differentiation, whereas the undifferentiated neuroblastic cells failed to be labeled by the probe. These findings were consistent with the localization of VIP-like immunoreactivity in the same tumor tissues. Direct evidence is presented at the single cell level for the production of VIP by ganglionic cells in ganglioneuroblastoma.
RESUMO
This study dealt with the analysis of individual growth pattern for about 300 trees distributed over two transects (East-West and North-South) measuring 20 by 2500 m, which were stratified by plateau, slope and "baixio", and three diameter at breast height (dbh) classes (10dbh 30 cm; 30dbh 50 cm e dbh50 cm). In each tree a metal "dendrometer" band was fixed to the trunk and growth in circumference was measured with a digital caliper. Measurements were carried out for 19 months, from June/1999 to December/2000; for this study only 12 months of year 2000 were considered. Individual growth pattern varied significantly over time (p = 0,00), and slightly (p = 0,08) when the interaction months and dbh classes was included; on the other hand, the signal is very weak (p = 0,25) when topographical classes were added to the later interaction, and no signal at all (p = 0,89) when the interaction between months and topographical classes were analyzed. Mean annual increment in diameter considering all 272 monitored trees was 1,64 ± 0,21 mm yr-1 (p = 0,05), falling within the interval estimated for BIONTE and Tapajós National Forest which are 1,5 and 2 mm per year, respectively.
The objective of experiment was study the growth of pioneer forest species pau-de-balsa (Ochroma lagopus) and caroba (Jacaranda copaia) to rehabilitate degraded areas from agriculture. The experiment carried out at Br-174, km 120. After the use for cassava and banana plantations the area was abandoned for 8 years. The secondary forest that took place was of low height and sparse trees. The experiment was installed at may/98 and composed by harrowed and no harrowed areas. The seedlings were planted in 3 x 3 m spacing, in 20 cm diameter by 30 cm deep holes, with 150g of fertilizer NPK (4-16-8) and dolomite limestone in the proportion 3:1. To evaluation the growth were measured the height and diameter in july/98 and each year, approximately (June/99, September/00 and May/01). The data were obtained from planted species comparing harrowed and no harrowed areas in a full random design. The survival of pau-de-balsa, was greater in harrowed area (97,1 percent) in relation to no harrowed area (92,5 percent) after one year of planting; and the survival of caroba, was 90 percent after one year of planting and showed no difference when compared the harrowed and no harrowed areas. The height and diameter of pau-de-balsa were greater in harrowed area after one year of planting, reaching 11.85 m and 11.42 cm, respectively. The differences occurred in caroba trees after the second year of planting, and reached, in the third year, 8.37 m of high and 11,18 cm in diameter. Besides other factors inherent to the species, the more friable soil of the harrowed area, facilitated higher growth to two studied species.
