RESUMO

This work aims to study the effect of radiolytic species induced by water radiolysis on the passive behavior of 316L stainless steel. For this purpose, the stainless steel/neutral and aerated 0.02 M Na2SO4, electrolyte solution interface was irradiated with proton beams. A wide range of energies between 2 and 16 MeV was selected, varying the maximum of the energy deposition between 0.5 and 122 µm in water from the interface. The irradiation experiments were performed at the CEMHTI cyclotron in Orléans and the 4 MV Van de Graaff accelerator at IP2I in Lyon (France). A dedicated irradiation device implemented with a 3-electrode cell dedicated to perform electrochemical measurements allows to measure the surface reactivity of the stainless steel as a function of the irradiation conditions. Results show that whatever the beam energy, the corrosion potential remains unchanged. It indicates that the very short-lived, highly reactive radiolytic species drive the corrosion potential and not only the recombination products such H2O2 or H2. The stainless steel remains in the passive state whatever the irradiation conditions. However, it is shown that, during irradiation, the passive film is less protective. This evolution is attributed to radiolysis of bound water molecules in the passive film.

RESUMO

Graphene has been widely used as a nanofiller in advanced electronic devices and nanocomposite materials to achieve enhanced electronic, mechanical, and barrier properties. Adequate polymers play the role of the composite matrix and can assist in the liquid-phase exfoliation of pristine graphene without any heavy chemical modification and the detriment of the properties of graphene. This stabilization mechanism is generally attributed to the steric forces formed between the polymer-adsorbed adsorbent. However, the key influence of the polymer concentration on the maximum graphene content in the colloidal solutions is still unclear. In this study, three different molar weights of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used for graphene dispersion. The influence of the PVA concentration on the graphene dispersion was systematically studied. Based on Flory's theory, we first proposed a model to describe the polymer adsorption process in the graphene/PVA/water ternary system in the "dilute" regime and simulated the adsorption-free energy changes during this transformation. This model is in good agreement with the experimental results and explains the critical polymer concentration, Cc, allowing the optimization of the graphene/polymer ratio. This fundamental understanding of polymer physisorption on 2D materials provides a simple method for producing nanocomposites with controlled nanosheet/polymer ratios and structures, which are of great interest for energy devices and biomaterials.

RESUMO

Titanium alloys are crucial lightweight materials; however, they are susceptible to spontaneous combustion under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, limiting their widespread use in aerospace engines. Improving the burn resistance of Ti alloys is essential for the structural safety and lightweight of aerospace equipment. Burn-resistant Ti alloys, such as Ti-V-Cr and Ti-Cu, however, face limitations such as high cost and low specific strength. Surface coatings provide a cost-effective solution while maintaining the high specific strength and good processability of the base material. Conventional surface treatments, such as laser cladding, result in defects and deformation of thin-walled parts. Cold spray technology offers a promising solution, as it uses kinetic energy to deposit coatings at low temperatures, avoiding defects and deformation. In this paper, we review the current research on burn-resistant surface technologies of Ti alloys and propose a new method of bimetallic coating by cold spraying and low-temperature heat treatment, which has the potential to solve the problem of spontaneous combustion of aerospace engine parts. The strategy presented can also guide the development of high-performance intermetallic compound-strengthened metal matrix composite coatings.

RESUMO

The aluminum-basalt fiber composite coating was prepared for the first time with basalt fiber as the spraying material by cold-spraying technology. Hybrid deposition behavior was studied by numerical simulation based on Fluent and ABAQUS. The microstructure of the composite coating was observed on the as-sprayed, cross-sectional, and fracture surfaces by SEM, focusing on the deposited morphology of the reinforcing phase basalt fibers in the coating, the distribution of basalt fibers, and the interaction between basalt fibers and metallic aluminum. The results show that there are four main morphologies of the basalt fiber-reinforced phase, i.e., transverse cracking, brittle fracture, deformation, and bending in the coating. At the same time, there are two modes of contact between aluminum and basalt fibers. Firstly, the thermally softened aluminum envelops the basalt fibers, forming a seamless connection. Secondly, the aluminum that has not undergone the softening effect creates a closed space, with the basalt fibers securely trapped within it. Moreover, the Rockwell hardness test and the friction-wear test were conducted on Al-basalt fiber composite coating, and the results showed that the composite coating has high wear resistance and high hardness.
