Pedigree records of 6821 Jamunapari goats of India were collected from 1980 to 2011 and used to evaluate the population structure and genetic diversity in this flock. Animals born between 2009 and 2011 represented the current reference population. The average pedigree completeness index (PCI) and numbers of equivalent complete generations (EqG) were estimated for the entire (PCI = 0.18, EqG = 2.24) and reference (PCI = 0.31, EqG = 3.45) populations. The average generation interval was 3.33 years. The average inbreeding coefficient and the average relatedness were 0.46 and 1.06%, respectively, for the entire population and 0.77 and 3.87% for the reference population. The rate of inbreeding was 0.06% per generation. The effective population size (Ne), estimated from increases in inbreeding coefficients between the first and third equivalent complete generations, was 52.65, but periodic introductions of unrelated breeding males resulted in average inbreeding levels in the reference population that were lower than those predicted from the estimate of Ne. Effective numbers of founders (fe), ancestors (fa), founder genomes equivalents (fg), and non-founder genomes (fng) were 51, 39, 25.8, and 48.2, respectively. The fe/fa ratio in the reference population was 1.31 and indicated that occasional bottlenecks had occurred in the population. The 14 most influential ancestors contributed 50% of the genetic variability in the reference population, with a maximum individual contribution of 9.25%. Approximately 1.9% of the initial heterozygosity had been lost from the population, indicating that substantial genetic diversity still exists in this flock.

Resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes has previously been shown to be a moderately heritable trait in some breeds of sheep, but the mechanisms of resistance are not well understood. Selection for resistance currently relies upon faecal egg counts (FEC), blood packed cell volumes and FAMACHA visual indicator scores of anaemia. Identifying genomic markers associated with disease resistance would potentially improve the selection process and provide a more reliable means of classifying and understanding the biology behind resistant and susceptible sheep. A GWAS was conducted to identify possible genetic loci associated with resistance to Haemonchus contortus in Katahdin sheep. Forty animals were selected from the top and bottom 10% of estimated breeding values for FEC from a total pool of 641 sires and ram lambs. Samples were genotyped using Applied Biosystems™ Axiom™ Ovine Genotyping Array (50K) consisting of 51 572 SNPs. Following quality control, 46 268 SNPs were included in subsequent analyses. Analyses were conducted using a linear regression model in plink v1.90 and a single-locus mixed model in snp and variation suite. Genome-wide significance was determined by a Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Using linear regression, loci on chromosomes 2, 3, 16, 23 and 24 were significantly associated at the genome level with FEC estimated breeding values, and we identified a region on chromosome 2 that was significant using both statistical analyses. We suggest a potential role for the gene DIS3L2 for gastrointestinal nematode resistance in Katahdin sheep, although further research is needed to validate these findings.

Two studies at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Zaria, Nigeria, compared Red Sokoto (RS), Sahelian (SG), and West African Dwarf (WAD) goats after experimental or natural infection with Haemonchus contortus. In the first study, 20 RS, 17 SG, and 14 WAD kids were challenged at 6 months of age with 5000 L3 larvae of H. contortus. Fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volumes (PCV), and body weights (BW) were recorded 0, 28, 35, and 42 days after infection. The FEC and PCV were affected only by time of measurement. In the second study, 322 RS and 97 SG kids were produced at NAPRI over 3 years, weaned at 4 to 6 months of age, dewormed, returned to contaminated pastures, and evaluated 28 and 35 days later. Effects of breed, year, breed × time interaction, and breed × year interaction were observed for PCV and BW; FEC was only affected by time of measurement, year and breed × year interaction. The FEC were larger and PCV were smaller on day 35 compared to day 28 and in year 2 compared to years 1 and 3. The SG kids were notably smaller than RS kids in year 2, with higher FEC and lower PCV, but FEC were larger for RS kids in years 1 and 3. Differences in parasite resistance among these Nigerian goat breeds were therefore small and likely reflected underlying differences in growth, development, and disease history.

This study used pedigree information and data collected from 1979 to 2012 at the Raeini Cashmere goat breeding station, located in Baft City in Kerman Province in southeastern Iran. Genetic and phenotypic parameters for early reproductive traits of breeding does, including total numbers of kids born at first kidding (LSB1), total numbers of kids weaned at first kidding (LSW1), total birth weight of all kids born at first kidding (LWB1), total weaning weight of all kids weaned at first kidding (LWW1), and age at first kidding (AFK), were estimated using a Bayesian approach via Gibbs sampling. Posterior means for heritability estimates of LSB1, LSW1, LWB1, LWW1, and AFK were statistically significant, with values of 0.12, 0.23, 0.17, 0.15, and 0.46, respectively. Low-to-moderate additive genetic variation was present for the studied reproductive traits. Estimated genetic correlations among LSB1, LSW1, LWB1, and LWW1 were statistically significant and ranged from 0.12 between LWB1 and LWW1 to 0.72 between LSB1 and LSW1. Corresponding phenotypic correlation estimates were also statistically significant and ranged from 0.04 between LWB1 and LWW1 to 0.55 between LSB1 and LSW1. Posterior means of genetic and phenotypic correlations between AFK and other studied traits were statistically significant only for LSB1 and LWB1. For LSB1, LSW1, LWB1, and LWW1, we conclude that genetic and phenotypic improvement in any of these traits in Raeini Cashmere does would favorably influence all of the other traits. However, does that first kidded at younger ages have smaller litters at birth and lower litter birth weights at their first parity.

Early immune events associated with reduced larval burden remain unclear in parasite-resistant breeds of sheep. Therefore, our objective was to determine breed differences in immune-related gene expression following infection with H. contortus. Gene expression in abomasal tissue and mucosa and in abomasal lymph nodes (ALN) was measured in 24 St. Croix (hair) lambs and 24 Dorset x (Finn-Rambouillet) (wool) lambs at 0 (uninfected), 3, 5 and 7 days after infection with 10 000 L3 H. contortus larvae. Expression of IL-4 in abomasal mucosa was detected on day 3 and increased to day 7 in hair lambs, but was not detectable in wool lambs. Genes that recruit neutrophils (CXCL1) and macrophages (MCP1) were upregulated in abomasal mucosa of hair lambs. Genes associated with alternative macrophage activation (ARG-1) and eosinophil activation (Gal-14) were also upregulated in the abomasal mucosa of hair lambs. Tissue remodeling genes (MMP13, PDGF) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and MCP1 were upregulated in abomasal tissue of wool lambs; these lambs also had greater expression of forkhead box P3 in ALN. These data indicate a role for early IL-4 expression locally and demonstrate potential downregulation of immunity in wool sheep that could facilitate establishment of H. contortus.

Caribbean hair sheep are more resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes than conventional wool breeds, but mechanisms that confer resistance are not fully understood. This study compared immune effector cell populations and antibody concentrations in 12 hair and 12 wool lambs infected with the abomasal parasite Haemonchus contortus and sacrificed at 3 or 27 days post-infection (p.i.) and 14 uninfected animals of each breed. Faecal egg counts were over 2.5-fold higher (P = 0.12) and packed cell volumes approximately 8% lower (P < 0.10) in infected wool lambs. Abomasal lymph nodes were heavier in infected animals (P < 0.05) and infected hair sheep had larger lymph nodes than infected wool sheep (P < 0.05). Tissue eosinophil concentrations were likewise larger (P = 0.07) in hair compared with wool sheep at 3 days p.i. Circulating levels of IgE and IgA in uninfected lambs were higher in hair sheep (P < 0.05) and during infection, hair sheep had higher serum IgA than wool sheep at 3, 5, and 21 days p.i. (P < 0.05). Serum IgE in infected lambs did not differ between breeds, but concentrations of IgE in lymph nodes were higher (P < 0.01) at 27 days p.i. in infected hair sheep.

Estimates of (co)variance components were obtained for weights at birth, weaning and 6, 9 and 12 months of age in Chokla sheep maintained at the Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute, Avikanagar, Rajasthan, India, over a period of 21 years (1980-2000). Records of 2030 lambs descended from 150 rams and 616 ewes were used in the study. Analyses were carried out by restricted maximum likelihood (REML) fitting an animal model and ignoring or including maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects. Six different animal models were fitted for all traits. The best model was chosen after testing the improvement of the log-likelihood values. Direct heritability estimates were inflated substantially for all traits when maternal effects were ignored. Heritability estimates for weight at birth, weaning and 6, 9 and 12 months of age were 0.20, 0.18, 0.16, 0.22 and 0.23, respectively in the best models. Additive maternal and maternal permanent environmental effects were both significant at birth, accounting for 9% and 12% of phenotypic variance, respectively, but the source of maternal effects (additive versus permanent environmental) at later ages could not be clearly identified. The estimated repeatabilities across years of ewe effects on lamb body weights were 0.26, 0.14, 0.12, 0.13, and 0.15 at birth, weaning, 6, 9 and 12 months of age, respectively. These results indicate that modest rates of genetic progress are possible for all weights.

Maintenance of high levels of realized fertility (defined as the percentage of ewes that lamb) and appropriate levels of fecundity are critical for efficient sheep production. The optimal level of fecundity in most situations is well below the maximum attainable level and can be targeted by combining selection among and within breeds with use of an expanding array of single-gene mutations affecting ovulation rate and litter size. The heritability of litter size is approximately 0.10, allowing changes of up to 2%/year from simple mass selection. Mutations in several genes associated with the transforming growth factor beta superfamily (BMPRIB, GDF9 and sex-linked BMP15) can increase ovulation rates by 0.7-1.5 ova in heterozygous ewes. However, ewes that are homozygous for BMP15 or GDF9 mutations are sterile, so use of these mutations requires carefully structured breeding programmes. Improvements in fertility may be critical for autumn lambing or programmes that aspire to lamb throughout the year. Selection to improve fertility in spring matings has been successful; selected adult ewes have lambing rates of 80-85% in October and early November. The selected ewes have a dramatically reduced seasonal anestrus, and many ewes continue to cycle during spring and summer. Major genes affecting seasonal breeding have not been identified in sheep. Polymorphisms in the melatonin receptor 1a gene appear to be associated with seasonal breeding in some, but not all breeds. However, functional genomic studies of genes associated with circadian and circannual rhythms have potential to reveal additional candidate genes involved in seasonal breeding.

Reliance on anthelmintic drugs to control internal parasites in sheep is no longer sustainable because of the development of resistance to these drugs in parasite populations. Genetic selection may offer an alternative long-term solution, as differences in parasite resistance exist both within and among sheep breeds. However, selection for parasite resistance may have correlated effects on other production traits. The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for weaning (WFEC) and postweaning (PWFEC) fecal egg counts (FEC) and assess their relationship with birth (BWT), weaning (WWT), and postweaning (PWWT) BW in Katahdin lambs. The study used WFEC (n = 2,537), PWFEC (n = 3.421), BWT (n = 12,869), WWT (n = 10,961), and PWWT (n = 7,812) from 12,869 lambs measured between 2003 and 2015 in 13 flocks enrolled in the U.S. National Sheep Improvement Program. Animal and sire models were fitted to the data using the ASReml statistical package. Records were corrected for fixed effects of dam age, joint effect of type of birth and rearing, and management group (defined by joint effects of flock, sex, and birth year and season); lamb age in days at each measurement time was fitted as a covariate. Maternal additive and maternal permanent environmental effects were not significant (P > 0.05), but litter effects influenced (P < 0.01) both WFEC and PWFEC. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.18 to 0.26 for WFEC and 0.23 to 0.46 for PWFEC, depending on the model used. Heritability estimates from sire models were higher than estimates from animal models. Direct additive, litter, residual, and phenotypic correlations between WFEC and PWFEC were 0.82, 0.25, 0.15, and 0.29, respectively. Bivariate analyses revealed low to moderate correlations between BW and FEC. Moderate heritabilities for FEC in this study indicated that genetic progress for this trait can be achieved in Katahdin lambs and that selection for low FEC should have little or no effect on BW.

Goat farming plays an important role in the Sri Lankan rural economy. Sri Lankan indigenous (SLI) goats and their crossbreds are reared mainly under extensive management and indiscriminately exposed to pathogens and parasites. This study was designed to evaluate resistance to haemonchosis in SLI goats and their Jamnapari crossbreds (JCB) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Twenty SLI and 20 JCB 4-month-old male goats were artificially challenged with 5000 H. contortus L3 larvae. Faecal egg counts (FEC), body weights, FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA®) scores, packed cell volumes (PCV), red blood cell counts, total and differential white blood cell counts, blood haemoglobin contents, serum total protein and albumin contents, and serum pepsinogen and antibody levels were determined at 0, 21, 28, 35 and 42days after challenge. Effects of measurement time were significant for all variables (P<0.05). Breed effects approached significance (P=0.06) and measurement time×breed interaction was significant (P<0.05) for FEC. Peak FEC occurred at day 35 in both goat types, and JCB goats had higher FEC than SLI goats at days 28 (P<0.001), 35 (P<0.10), and 42 (P<0.10). Means for FEC at day 35 were 1783±446 eggs per gram of feces (epg) for SLI kids and 3329±850 epg for JCB kids. Haematological parameters, serum chemistry, and FAMACHA scores suggested that SLI goats were recovering from parasitic infection by day 42, whereas JCB goats had increasing severity of anaemia. Means for PCV in SLI goats decreased from 26.8±0.7% at day 0 to 19.7±0.9% at day 35 and thereafter increased to 20.2±0.9% at day 42. Means for PCV in JCB goats declined from 25.9±0.6% at day 0 to 17.2±0.9% at day 42. Eosinophilia was observed in both genotypes. The JCB goats were heavier than SLI goats and had higher antibody titres, reflecting higher levels of parasitism. Both goat types significantly increased in body weight during the experiment and therefore tolerated parasite infection without severe production losses. We concluded that SLI goats were more resistant to haemonchosis than JCB goats, but that JCB goats were somewhat resilient to parasitic infection. Substantial variability in measurements associated with parasite infection in both breeds indicated potential to improve parasite resistance. Phenotypic information should be coupled with genomic information to identify appropriate breeding goals for future selection programs.

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for BW in Katahdin lambs. Six animal models were used to study direct and maternal effects on birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), and postweaning weight (PWWT) using 41,066 BWT, 33,980 WWT, and 22,793 PWWT records collected over 17 yr in 100 flocks. Models included fixed effects of management group, dam age, type of birth (for BWT) or birth and rearing (for WWT and PWWT), and lamb age at weighing (fitted as a covariate for WWT and PWWT; all < 0.05). Variance components for random effects were estimated in sequentially more complex models and tested for significance with likelihood-ratio tests. A model that fitted only an additive animal effect overestimated additive variance for all BW, resulting in larger estimates of direct heritability than models that included maternal effects. Maternal effects explained variation ( < 0.05) in all BW. Heritability estimates for optimal models were 0.15 ± 0.01 for BWT, 0.18 ± 0.02 for WWT, and 0.20 ± 0.02 for PWWT. Estimates of maternal heritabilities were 0.14 for BWT, 0.10 for WWT, and 0.06 for PWWT, with SE = 0.01. Permanent environmental maternal effects explained 4 to 6% (±1%) of total phenotypic variances for these BW. Litter effects included temporary environmental effects common to littermates and a proportion of the dominance genetic variance and accounted for 16 to 19% (±1%) of phenotypic variance. Correlations between additive direct and maternal genetic effects were -0.14 for BWT, -0.23 for WWT, and -0.04 for PWWT but differed from 0 ( < 0.05) only for WWT. The total heritability predicted the total response in direct and maternal genetic effects from mass selection and was 0.23 for BWT, 0.20 for WWT, and 0.23 for PWWT. Direct and maternal additive, maternal permanent environmental, residual, and phenotypic correlations between BWT and WWT were 0.53 ± 0.05, 0.58 ± 0.06, 0.51 ± 0.06, 0.39 ± 0.01, and 0.44 ± 0.01, respectively; those between BWT and PWWT were 0.45 ± 0.06, 0.58 ± 0.08, 0.36 ± 0.08, 0.33 ± 0.01, and 0.37 ± 0.01 respectively; and those between WWT and PWWT were 0.85, 0.99, 0.92, 0.77, and 0.81, respectively, with SE ≤ 0.02. Therefore, both direct and maternal effects had an important impact on BW in Katahdin lambs. Models that included both additive and permanent environmental maternal effects as well as a temporary environmental litter effect should result in more accurate estimates of breeding values and better selection decisions.

Ewe productivity (i.e., total number or weight of lambs weaned per breeding ewe) is a key indicator of lamb production efficiency. This study compared various measures of ewe productivity and ewe and lamb performance among ewes of 3 breed types mated to rams of 4 terminal-sire breed types in an extensive rangeland production system. Purebred Rambouillet ( = 212), purebred Polypay ( = 236), and crossbred Romanov-White Dorper × Rambouillet (RW-RA; = 231) ewes were produced from locally adapted Polypay and Rambouillet ewes and then annually mated to Columbia, Suffolk, Columbia × Suffolk, or Suffolk × Columbia sires for up to 4 yr, beginning at 1 yr of age. The cumulative number and weight of lambs weaned through 4 yr were greater for RW-RA (5.9 lambs and 153 kg, respectively) and Polypay ewes (4.9 lambs and 123 kg, respectively) than for Rambouillet ewes (2.9 lambs and 99 kg, respectively) and also were greater for RW-RA ewes than for Polypay ewes (all < 0.001). Greater productivity of RW-RA and Polypay ewes, compared with Rambouillet ewes, was driven by greater lambing rates (ewes lambing per ewe exposed) as ewe lambs (87 and 77 vs. 31%, respectively; < 0.001) and greater ( < 0.001) litter sizes as ewe lambs (1.3, 1.3, and 1.0, respectively) and adult ewes (2.1, 2.0, and 1.6, respectively). The RW-RA ewes also had greater longevity ( < 0.01) and cumulative lambing rates ( < 0.001) than Polypay and Rambouillet ewes. Lamb BW at birth and weaning in adult ewes favored less-prolific Rambouillet ewes ( < 0.001), but after adjustment for type of birth and rearing and weaning age, differences in weaning BW among ewe breed types were small and not significant ( = 0.08). Effects of sire breed type on measures of cumulative ewe productivity were not significant ( > 0.74), but Suffolk-sired lambs had the heaviest adjusted birth weights ( = 0.01) and Columbia-sired lambs tended to have the lightest adjusted weaning weights ( = 0.12). Combined effects of heterosis and additive breed effects were associated with greater lambing rates in ewe lambs, larger litters at all ages, and substantially greater number and weight of lambs weaned for Polypay and RW-RA ewes than for Rambouillet ewes.

The objective of this study was to determine if the mean faecal egg count (FEC) from a first experimental Haemonchus contortus infection could be used to classify parasite-naïve Pelibuey hair sheep as parasite-resistant high responders and parasite-susceptible low responders. Twenty 6- to 7-month-old Pelibuey male sheep raised free of gastrointestinal nematodes were challenged with 7500±1412 H. contortus L3 larvae administrated orally on day 0 of the study. Faecal samples from each lamb were obtained daily from 21 to 41days post-infection (Stage I). Lambs received a second artificial infection of 8420±1545L3 larvae on day 42, with faecal samples collected from day 65 to day 78 (Stage III). The mean FEC for each lamb in Stage I was used to classify 8 lambs with means for FEC that were more than two standard errors (SE) below the overall mean (i.e., <4764 eggs per gram of feces; epg) as high responders. The remaining 12 lambs were classified as low responders. Means for FEC in Stage I were 2449±194 epg for high responders and 14,461±1044 epg for low responders (P<0.05). High responders also had lower FEC than low responders in Stage III (actual means of 650±220 vs. 5933±1990 epg; P<0.05 following log transformation to normalize the FEC distribution). Lambs were then reclassified as high and low responders based on their mean FEC in Stage III. Fourteen lambs with means for FEC that were more than one standard error (SE) below the overall mean (i.e., below 1537 epg) were classified as high responders. The remaining six lambs were classified as low responders. Use of the Stage I responder class to predict the Stage III responder class resulted in an 83.3% sensitivity but only a 50% specificity. The positive predictive value was 41.7% and the negative predictive value was 87.5%. The poor positive predictive value was caused by 5 animals with high FEC in Stage I, but low FEC in Stage III. The first infection thus identified most high-responder lambs, but a second infection may improve accuracy by separating lambs with an intermediate level of resistance from truly susceptible lambs. This protocol now requires additional validation under more practical conditions involving natural parasite infections and larger lamb numbers.

The FAMACHA system was introduced to the U.S. just over 10 yr ago to allow selective deworming of lambs with anemia associated with and retard the development of anthelmintic resistance. The FAMACHA system was initially developed as a predictor of packed cell volume (PCV), but correlations between FAMACHA and fecal egg counts (FEC) have also been reported. It is important to understand factors that influence FAMACHA scores among farms to improve management of gastrointestinal nematodes. The objectives of this study were therefore to quantify associations between FAMACHA scores, FEC, BW, and age in Katahdin lambs at 2 different measurement times in 8 flocks in the eastern U.S., and to assess consistency of relationships between FAMACHA and FEC among flocks. Data came from 1,644 Katahdin lambs from 7 flocks sampled at approximately 90 d of age, and 1,295 lambs from 6 flocks sampled at approximately 120 d of age over a 5 yr period. Residual correlations among log-transformed FEC (LFEC), FAMACHA scores, BW, and lamb ages at each measurement time were determined. Repeatability of each variable was also determined as residual correlations among repeated measures. At both 90 and 120 d of age, correlations of FAMACHA scores with LFEC and BW were significant ( < 0.001), but numerically modest (0.25 and -0.16, respectively at 90 d; 0.31 and -0.16, respectively at 120 d), demonstrating that higher FAMACHA scores were associated with higher FEC and more likely to be observed in lighter lambs. A small negative correlation was observed between FAMACHA score and lamb age ( = -0.05, = 0.05, 90 d; = -0.11, < 0.001, 120 d) indicating that younger lambs were more likely to have elevated FAMACHA scores. Thus, younger and lighter lambs will likely be more susceptible to parasitism and may need to be managed more diligently than older or heavier lambs. In addition, FAMACHA scores have potential to improve breeding value estimates in programs designed to genetically improve parasite resistance.

Selection for low fecal egg counts (FEC) can be used to genetically enhance resistance to gastrointestinal nematode parasites in growing lambs, thereby reducing the frequency of use of anthelmintics, facilitating marketing of organic lamb, and reducing the risk of development of anthelmintic resistance by the parasite. Recording of FEC in lambs has, therefore, been incorporated into several national sheep genetic evaluation programs. Ewes in late gestation and early lactation are also vulnerable to parasite infection and commonly experience a periparturient rise in FEC. This study was designed to assess factors associated with the periparturient rise in FEC in Katahdin ewes and associated changes in FEC in their lambs. Data came from 1,487 lambings by 931 Katahdin ewes from 11 farms in the Eastern United States. Fecal egg counts were measured in ewes at approximately 0, 30, and 60 d postpartum and in their lambs at approximately 60, 90, and 120 d of age. Approximately 1,400 lambs were evaluated at each measurement age. Data were analyzed separately for ewes and lambs and also initially analyzed separately for each measurement time. Repeated-measures analyses were then used to evaluate responses across measurement times. In ewes, FEC peaked at approximately 28 d postpartum, and we concluded that informative periparturient FEC could be obtained from 1 wk before until approximately 5 wk after lambing. Yearling ewes had higher FEC than adult ewes ( < 0.01), and ewes that nursed twin or triplet lambs had higher FEC than ewes that nursed single lambs ( < 0.01). In lambs, FEC increased through approximately 120 d of age. Lambs from yearling ewes and lambs nursed in larger litters were, like their dams, at greater risk of parasitism ( < 0.05). Ewes and lambs in these groups would benefit from enhanced monitoring of parasite loads at lambing and in early lactation. Correlations () between FEC in lambs at 90 d of age and FEC in ewes at 0, 30, and 60 d postpartum of 0.05 to 0.09 ( ≤ 0.05) support the presence of a genetic relationship between these 2 indicators of parasite resistance.

Gastrointestinal parasitism places serious constraints on small ruminant production. The situation has been exacerbated by development of drug resistance in many parasite populations, leading to interest in identification of animals with genetically mediated resistance or tolerance to nematode infections. This study assessed the response to natural infection with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in Djallonké sheep during the rainy season in the Sudan-Guinea Savannah region of Burkina Faso. Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent GIN at this site and time. Djallonké lambs (n=434) were sampled from 40 households and evaluated at a common location in southern Burkina Faso. Lambs were dewormed with levamisole at 2 to 6 months of age and returned to infected pastures. Fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volumes (PCV), and FAffa Malan CHArt (FAMACHA©) scores were determined 28 and 35 days after deworming. Lamb mortality was monitored throughout the experiment. Least-squares means for BW increased from 13.8±0.2 kg at 28 days to 14.0±0.2 kg at 35 days (P<0.01). Simple means and medians for FEC were 615 and 100, respectively, at 28 days and 850 and 175, respectively, at 35 days. The FEC exhibited strong right skewness. Following logarithmic transformation and back-transformation of resulting least-squares means to the original scale, FEC were higher (P<0.01) for males (208±27) than females (122±10). Least-squares means for PCV decreased (P<0.001) from 28 (36.3±0.5%) to 35 days (33.7±0.5%), and were higher (P<0.01) for females (36.0±0.4%) than males (33.9±0.7%). Correlations (r) between repeated measurements of BW, FEC, PCV and FAMACHA scores at 28 and 35 days were all positive (P<0.001). The correlation between FAMACHA scores and PCV was negative at 28 (r=-0.14) and 35 days (r=-0.18) (P<0.001). This study revealed that BW was an easily measured predictor of the ability of the lamb to resist infection with GIN and maintain PCV, and confirmed that FAMACHA scores are useful indicators of differences in FEC. Approximately 40% of female and 30% of male lambs did not show detectable levels of infection (i.e. FEC=0) under field conditions. The great variability that was observed in FEC and PCV suggests potential to use Djallonké sheep in breeding programs to enhance resistance to GIN.

Twenty-one of the world's prolific sheep breeds and strains were tested for the presence of the FecB mutation of BMPR1B and the FecX(I) mutation of BMP15. The breeds studied were Romanov (2 strains), Finn (2 strains), East Friesian, Teeswater, Blueface Leicester, Hu, Han, D'Man, Chios, Mountain Sheep (three breeds), German Whiteheaded Mutton, Lleyn, Loa, Galician, Barbados Blackbelly (pure and crossbred) and St. Croix. The FecB mutation was found in two breeds, Hu and Han from China, but not in any of the other breeds. The 12 Hu sheep sampled were all homozygous carriers of FecB (FecB(B)/FecB(B)) whereas the sample of 12 Han sheep included all three genotypes (FecB(B)/FecB(B), FecB(B)/FecB+, FecB+/FecB+) at frequencies of 0.33, 0.58 and 0.08, respectively. There was no evidence of FecX(I) in any of the breeds sampled.

Full-sib family selection for rate (WP) or efficiency (WP/F) of protein gain in rats from 3 to 9 weeks of age was applied for five generations. Three rats per litter were killed to estimate carcass protein. Standardized response/cumulative selection for WP was .19+/-.10 for WP, .28+/-.10 for 3- to 9-week gain .28+/-.08 for 9-week weight, .16+/-.08 for litter size, .22+/-.12 for skinning loss and -.07+/-.09 for fraction of protein in the live weight. Response from selection for WP/F was .18+/-.16 for WP/F, .20+/-.11 for WP, .21+/-.11 for weight gain, .16+/-.11 for 3-week weight, .21+/-.10 for 9-week weight, but negligible for skinning loss or body protein. Response to WP/F selection was extremely variable among generations, associated with generation differences in weight and composition at 9 weeks. Estimates of heritability from offspring-midparent regression were .20+/-.12 for WP and .24+/-.08 for WP/F. Estimates of genotype-generation environment interaction were large for growth, feed intake and skinning loss. Maternal effects were large for weaning weight, fraction of body protein and WP. Sire component genetic correlations were 1.08+/-.13 for WP with total gain, .92+/-.08 for WP/F with gross efficiency and .29+/-.25 for WP with WP/F. A partitional calorimeter was used to evaluate heat production of rats. Lines differed in average heat loss but not in heat loss per unit actual or metabolic weight. Response to selection has been steady for WP but probably could be improved by selecting for WP/F at a constant weight rather than a constant age.

Management of gastrointestinal parasites is a critical issue for sheep producers worldwide. Increases in the prevalence of drug-resistant worms have complicated parasite control and increased economic losses. Therefore, other methods of parasite control need to be assessed, including the use of genetically resistant animals in breeding programs. Hair sheep breeds such as the St. Croix have greater parasite resistance than conventional wool breeds. However, the immune mechanisms that control parasite resistance in hair or wool breeds have not yet been fully determined, and information on cytokine expression profiles for both wool sheep selected for increased resistance and hair sheep is limited. Our objective was to investigate gene expression differences in 24 parasite-resistant hair and 24 susceptible wool sheep to identify immune effectors associated with resistance to . One-half of the lambs were infected and sacrificed at 3 or 27 d after infection. Remaining lambs were not infected. Breed differences in expression of genes associated with Th1 and Th2 immune responses in lymph nodes and abomasal tissue were determined. Th2-associated genes included IL-4, IL-13, IL-5, IgE, the α chain of the IL-4 receptor, and the α chain of the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI). Th1-associated genes included interferon gamma (IFN-γ), the p35 subunit of IL-12 (IL-12 p35), and the ß1 and ß2 chains of the IL-12 receptor (IL-12 Rß1 and IL-12 Rß2, respectively). In both hair and wool sheep, infection with resulted in greater expression of IgE, IL-13, IL-5, and IL-12 p35 and somewhat reduced expression of IFNγ in lymph nodes. In abomasal tissue, parasite infection resulted in greater IgE, IL-13, FcεRI, and IL-12 p35 expression in infected lambs compared with control lambs. Between breeds, hair sheep had a stronger Th2 response after infection than wool sheep, with increased expression of IgE and IL-13 and decreased expression of IFNγ in lymph nodes and increased expression of IL-13 and decreased expression of IL-12 p35 in abomasal tissue. Expression of IL-4 in lymph nodes did not differ between hair and wool lambs, and IL-4, IL-5, IL-12 Rß1, and IL-12 Rß2 expression was too low to measure at the times sampled in abomasal tissue.
